The Liberals and Ireland: The Ulster Question in British Politics to 1914, by Patricia Jalland

"The Liberals and Ireland" analyzes the Liberal Government's failure to resolve the Ulster problem, and argues for the vital role of the Irish question in the Liberal Party's decline. Drawing on more than 50 collections of private papers, Dr Jalland traces the Liberal Party's commitment to Home Rule, and the nature and significance of the Ulster Question from 1885. The changing roles of Asquith, Birell, Churchill and Lloyd George are analyzed in the context of the parliamentary debates and the secret negotiations of the party leaders. The mounting pressure from the Ulster campaign and the Government's miscalculation culminated in the fatal Carragh crisis of March 1914, which finally wrecked the Liberal Irish policy.

Awesome Paranormal-Historical Romance
By Rachel Flesher
Donna's best work yet!

Galen's character is not new to us. We met him in the previous books, laughed at the antics of his fellow warriors and druids teasing him about his "endless" stomach. However, there is more than meets the eye with him, ones we never understood until his book. Though his past is harsh yet differs from the others.

Reaghan is the perfect "fit" for him. She may not be a warrior like Larena from Dangerous Highlander but nor is she the whimpy, whiny heroine (which I can not stand such heroines.) She is a good mixture and knows when to fight for what she wants, not easily swayed or misdirected as she proves in the book.

New players are introduced that makes your mouth water and get ancy to learn what happens next in the story line.

Simply can not gush enough about this book or stop behaving like a total fangirl. Those who have a druid fetish or simply love druids and Highlanders would love this book. Also, this is for those who like the beautiful, harmonic blending of paranormal with historical, melding the two genres until you simply thought they always went hand to hand.

terrific historical romantic fantasy
By A Customer
In 1603 Galen, the Druid-created Highlander warrior is sent to an isolated Scottish loch to find a key powerful artifact that should enable the Castle McLeod forces to defeat their enemy Deirdre, the evil Druid. There instead of the arcane relic he came to retrieve, Galen meets Reaghan the Druid without any magical power.

Both are stunned by their immediate attraction to one another. She and her villagers join Galen as he returns to Castle MacLeod to help defend the Druids from Deidre's malevolent assaults. Her horde attacks the travelers severely injuring Reaghan, the focus of the assault. As Reaghan heals and she and Galen fall in love, they will learn the dark powerful reason Deirdre wants her captive.

The latest Dark Sword historical romantic fantasy (see Untamed Highlander, Dangerous Highlander and Wicked Highlander) is a terrific tale that deftly merges early seventeenth century Highlander tidbits inside of Donna Grant's Druid mythos. The story line is fast-paced but driven by the lead protagonists and their dangerous adversary. Readers will enjoy this strong thriller as Galen and fans wonder if love can overcome insidious evil.

They're Watching, by Gregg Hurwitz

“Riveting, emotionally rich, original, and beautifully written, this book kept me up too late reading, had me sneaking in pages the next day. They’re Watching reminded me what it’s like to be in the thrall of a great story: helpless until the end, loving every minute of it.”—Lisa Unger, New York Times bestselling author of Die for You

Patrick Davis is a man with troubles. First his Hollywood dreams crumble and then his storybook marriage hits a snag. Now, DVDs start being delivered to his house—DVDs which show that someone is watching him and his wife, that the two of them are being stalked and recorded by cameras hidden in their house. Then the e-mails start, and someone offers to fix everything, to take the mess his life has become and make it all right. Patrick figures it’s the offer of a lifetime. But Patrick couldn’t be more wrong. With every step he falls deeper into a web of intrigue that threatens everything he values in this world. Before he knows it, he’s in and in deep—and his only escape is to outwit and outplay his unseen opponents at their own game.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Always a master of the gripping setup, Hurwitz (Trust No One) outdoes himself in this ultra-suspenseful thriller. One gray L.A. winter morning, disgraced screenwriter Patrick Davis steps out onto his porch in Bel Air, retrieves his newspaper, and finds a DVD tucked inside. The DVD opens with a static image of Patrick's downstairs bathroom, shot from outside the house, then shows him entering, using the toilet, and leaving. Other DVDs follow, each more disturbing than the last, until Patrick receives a phone call: "So… are you ready to get started?" Readers will be more than ready, as Hurwitz sure-handedly leads everyone, Patrick included, through this tale of mystery and murder, serving up one shocking surprise after another. Patrick eventually proves that, even though he's been outmaneuvered time after time, he's not entirely the pawn those manipulating him take him for. A rousing conclusion ties up all the intriguing threads.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Here’s the backstory to this labyrinthine thriller: Patrick Davis, a would-be screenwriter, has finally managed to sell a screenplay. The movie, They’re Watching, is in production, starring a hot young actor. In a skirmish, the actor managed to hurt himself and accused Patrick of assaulting him. Patrick was fired from the film, charged with assault, and sued by the actor and the production company. Oh, and his marriage is on the rocks. As the novel opens, Patrick begins receiving DVDs in the mail, revealing that someone is secretly filming Patrick and his wife in their home. Soon there are e-mails instructing Patrick to do certain things, and from there the story . . . well, let’s just say it never quite goes in the direction we expect it to go. This is a very well constructed thriller, full of twists and turns and unexpected revelations. Hurwitz frequently sets us up to expect one thing but delivers something entirely different. He keeps us constantly on our toes, and—this is especially good—he keeps us guessing right until the very last pages about exactly who has targeted Patrick and why. Highly recommended, especially for fans of Dean Koontz, Linwood Barclay, and Harlan Coben. --David Pitt

Excellent
By Tina
I have stopped reading thrillers, with a few exceptions and author Gregg Hurwitz falls squarely in those "exceptions".

It seems as though each and every novel he has ever written has been not only suspensful, but so engaging that I could never figure out the "ending" before he chose to tell it to me.

In They're Watching, we, once again, find Hurtwitz is supreme shape - although I have to admit that I had my doubts in the very first chapters as I thought they were, to be honest, boring and drawn out.

However, having said that, I am incredibly happy that I persisted because the rest of the book is an absolute powerhouse of twists and turns that had me baffled and more than a little curious.

Patrick Davis, the main character is actually an interesting "main" because he is not all that likeable, which is also something that I like about Hurwitz - he is not afraid to write characters with flaws. When we first meet Davis, it is obvious that he quite miserable and that his marriage is in deep trouble. However, he hasn't seen nothing yet!!!

Hurwitz truly delivers in this one - like I said, everytime I turned the page, I had no idea what to expect next - and, in the end, the author somehow managed to make me say "how did he do that?" once again.

Loved, loved this book.

Top-notch thriller from a fantastic author
By Amazon Customer
Patrick Davis had it all--a beautiful wife, a Hollywood home, and a screenplay that was picked up by a major studio and made into a movie with an up-and-coming star. But just when he's seemingly poised on the brink of serious success, he's suddenly on the verge of losing everything. With his marriage on the rocks, his career in jeopardy, and a six-figure lawsuit pending against him, his formerly storybook existence has turned into a horror movie. When he starts getting DVDs showing footage of him going about his daily life, he's at first confused, then alarmed, then angry. Patrick's entire life is being meticulously scrutinized. But why?

Then the phone calls begin. And the e-mails. And then the demands. Whoever is watching Patrick knows everything about him--what he does, where he goes, whom he talks to. He can't go to the police, and he has no choice but to do what is asked. But when the true intentions of his stalkers finally come to light, Patrick will have to decide whether to give up or fight back. In the process, he will learn what his true priorities are and how to value what really matters most.

They're Watching is a tightly constructed thriller. Author Gregg Hurwitz spins out the suspense in the first-person narrative little by little until the tension is so high there's nothing to be done but stay up all night and finish the book. The plot manages to avoid being formulaic while still giving readers the twists and turns they expect. The author is to be commended for telling a great story full of intrigue, betrayal, and high stakes without resorting to the graphic sensuality and violence adopted by many of his peers. Utterly entertaining, They're Watching is an ideal escape for mystery/thriller aficionados. With sympathetic characters, great pacing, and superb writing, this book should easily secure Hurwitz's place among today's premier writers in this genre.

The best page-turner I've read in a while...
By Karen
I'll leave it to others to discuss the plot. I just have to say that this book was riveting and very hard to put down. When I couldn't spend time reading it, I was thinking about the next time I could lose myself in it. This was my first Hurwitz book and immediately after finishing it, I logged onto Amazon to buy two more of his books. There are many unexpected twists and turns and when I thought it couldn't keep up this level of entertainment, it managed to keep me enthralled. I definitely recommend this book.

My husband enjoyed it!
By mdgrl79
My husband is currently in school and had to get this book for his writing class. He didn't have to read the entire thing, only a few essays to which he had to write essays in response. I was actually pretty jealous of him having to use this book! It sounded like the stories were interesting, and well, I happen to love pop culture! When I took my college writing class, I had the most boring book! I think it's great to have topics that people can relate to when trying to teach them. Pop culture is definitely one of those topics, in my opinion.

Mirror On America Book
By Adam
This book has very nice stories in it from a variety of sources. The text is a little dated in relation to modern references and events. It can be bought cheap if your professor recommends it, but make sure it is the correct edition because with this kind of book it has to be spot on or else the stories won't be on the right page or even worse, they won't be there at all. Overall this book is a good read with interesting stories as long as it is the right edition they are asking for.

The Forgotten Legion (The Forgotten Legion Chronicles), by Ben Kane

Set in the late Roman Republic, in the first century B.C.E., The Forgotten Legion is a tale of the greatest empire of the ancient world from the perspective of those on the lowest rungs of its society.  Romulus and Fabiola are twins, born into slavery to a enslaved mother who is much beloved by them, and much abused by their owner. At 13 years old, they and their mother are sold: Romulus to gladiator school, Fabiola into prostitution, where she will catch the eye of one of the most powerful men in Rome, and their mother into obscurity and death in the salt mines.

Tarquinius is an Etruscan, a warrior and soothsayer, born enemy of Rome and trained by the last haruspex in the forgotten arts of divination. A runaway slave, then an AWOL Legionaire, he has a long foretold destiny that will take him to the very ends of the known world.
Brennus is a Gaul from the Allobreges tribe. In the battle against the Roman army, his entire family, perhaps his entire tribe, is slaughtered, and only he survives to be sold as a slave to be trained as a gladiator. He rises to become one of the most famous and feared gladiators of his day - and mentor to the boy slave, Romulus, who dreams night and day of escape and of revenge.

The lives of these four characters are bound and interwoven in a marvellous story which begins in a Rome riven by corruption, violence and political enmities, but ends far away, where Romulus, Brennus and Tarquinius find themselves fighting against the Parthians and overwhelming odds - survivors of one of the most legendary battles in Roman military history and destined to become part of one of the most compelling, enduring legends:  The Forgotten Legion.

From Publishers Weekly
Two gladiators, a soothsayer and a prostitute seek freedom and revenge in Kane's sword and sandal epic that starts strong but runs adrift after too many bloody battles. While Julius Caesar, Pompey and Crassus struggle for control of Rome, Romulus and Fabiola, the illegitimate children of a slave raped by a nobleman, run afoul of their master and are sold off; Romulus to gladiator school and Fabiola to the citys fanciest brothel. Romulus is trained by Brennus, a fearsome gladiator whose family was slaughtered by the Roman army. Across the Forum, Fabiola, soon a favored courtesan of the social elite, vows to save her brother from certain death and to destroy the man who fathered her. After a fatal accident outside the brothel, Romulus and Brennus flee the city, joining up with Tarquinius, an Etruscan warrior who can glimpse the future. The trio enlists in Crassuss army as they prepare to invade the Parthian Empire, a military action that quickly turns disastrous. Though the cliffhanger ending is oddly underwhelming (a sequel is in the works), readers into Roman intrigue and epic violence will consider Kanes debut promising. (Mar.)

From Booklist
This may be the only historical novel in which a principal character is a proto-Etruscan nationalist. In this lively and often riveting first novel, Kane captures much of the chaos, brutality, and splendor of the late republic in the first century BCE, when Rome was ruled by the First Triumvirate of Julius Caesar, Pompey, and Marcus Licinius Crassus. Curiously, the four main characters are from the underside of society, and each has reason to despise the power of the emerging Roman superstate. Tarquinius labors on a latifundium and bemoans the loss of Etruscan greatness and subservience to Latin cultural and political domination. Brennus is a great gladiator whose family fell victim to imperial expansion. The twins, Romulus and Fabiola, suffer the degradation of slavery. Each of them is caught up in one of the seminal episodes of the century, as Crassus, seeking military glory, launched an expedition against Rome’s archenemy in the East, Parthia. Kane clearly knows the history of the period, and his story is rich in accurate historical detail. The characterizations are finely drawn and set against a dangerous, cruel, but often thrilling landscape. --Jay Freeman

Review
"I thoroughly enjoyed The Forgotten Legion - so much so that I stayed up until 2 A.M. to finish it. Where others play in the rarefied world of senators, legates, and upper class merchants, Kane delves into the grim underbelly of slavery, prostitution and gladitorial carnage...His weaving of the many character strands is deftly done. I was very impressed."--Manda Scott, author of The Crystal Skull and Boudica: Dreaming the Eagle

Because i enjoyed some of this author's other books
By Nancy Tan
Because i enjoyed some of this author's other books, I ordered this trilogy. That was a mistake. I should have noticed that these were his debut and not jump into it with both feet! I managed to finish the three books eventually, mainly by taking a dispassionate interest in what might have made the books better. First, they could be shorter, as mentioned in previous reviews. All the near misses and miraculous rescues became redundant. Also redundant were some of the battle scenes. Too many arrows and spears ended up in eyes and necks for it to be credible. Also detracting from credibility was an overuse of divination and omens. One of the main characters, the Etruscan, never came to life for me. It was hard to know what he was about. And some of the other characters simply fell apart by the second volume and totally disintegrated in the third. Most of all, I kept looking in the author's notes in all three volumes about the author's characterizing Cesar as a rapist. And Anthony being characterized as a nasty bully. No mention was made at all about whether there were historical facts on which to base such character assassinations or whether this was his own fantasy. This, most of all, I find amazing when the book is supposed to be a historical fiction!!

YOU WON'T FORGET THIS BOOK!
By G. OCHOA
I had been looking for a good book to read for quite some time. The last historical fiction book I read almost made me wish I was illiterate it was so poorly written (Give Me Back My Legions by Turtledove). The premise of "The Fogotten Legion" sounded interesting to me and Ben Kane truly delivers on his first attempt. You are swept into the book quickly. There is plenty of action and suspense. Well written dialogue in between and the characters are well developed and keep you interested. More importantly, they make you care about what is happening to them. I enjoyed this book immensely and wished it was a thousand pages not just five hundred. If you enjoyed any of Simom Scarrow's or Conn Iggulden's books on Roman historical fiction, then stop reading this and buy the book now. And be careful not to cut yourself on any errant jabs of the gladius while reading. Bravo Ben Kane. Bravo.

Interesting, anachronistic, obese
By Eric C. Brown
I found the opening of this book intriguing. It promised a quasi-historical jaunt into a speculative Roman-manned outpost in China of all places. And who wouldn't be enticed by a story line about the mysterious Etruscans? With 510 pages in print, I figured Mr. Kane would have no difficulty pulling that whole story together.

Unfortunately, with an investment in of about 320 pages, I realized that this was just another bloated series pilot. Other reviewers' comments express those problems in details that I find to be fair. What I don't understand is the business logic. If Mr. Kane wrote a trilogy of three books, each around 250 pages, he would make three sales to me. But I am not getting onboard to slog through two more (minimum?) 500 page tomes to see how this all turns out. Wouldn't it be easier to write a 300 page book anyway? With the excess time this would leave him, he could be more than halfway through book 2, and not have exhausted hopeful readers such as myself, either.

As far as anachronism, UNLIKE OTHER COMPLAINTS, I don't find this to be a modern left/right polemic. Instead, I think the characters all anachronistically demonstrate an enlightenment-era sense of individuality and world-view. I happen to share their world view, and I am anything but a leftist -- I am a traditionalist in the Western Civilization sense of John Locke, et al. I have no problem with themes of Freedom and Liberty.

However, for so many different characters to be be so often "enraged" to a debilitating degree by the institutions of war, plunder and slavery, Mr. Kane might have had more believable characters if he told us he had sent them back to Rome in a time machine. Characters can develop insights contrary to the norms around them -- fleeting glances of the ideas of later ages -- but the four protagonists here are all full-fledged individualists bewildered by the age in which they live.

Interesting -- the Etruscans. Since Mr. Kane has researched and clearly mused a great deal on the Estruscans, I would encourage him to write speculative fiction about that society from its origins to its destruction. I would suggest he keep the books shorter, and have each be a stand alone, complete story, all at different places, times, and about different individuals, touching on the rise, migrations, mystery, and fall of a great civilization as he best imagines it.

I hope he gives that idea some thought.

Only Time Will Tell (The Clifton Chronicles), by Jeffrey Archer

From the internationally bestselling author of Kane and Abel and A Prisoner of Birth comes Only Time Will Tell, the first in an ambitious new series that tells the story of one family across generations, across oceans, from heartbreak to triumph.

The epic tale of Harry Clifton's life begins in 1920, with the words "I was told that my father was killed in the war." A dock worker in Bristol, Harry never knew his father, but he learns about life on the docks from his uncle, who expects Harry to join him at the shipyard once he's left school. But then an unexpected gift wins him a scholarship to an exclusive boys' school, and his life will never be the same again.

As he enters into adulthood, Harry finally learns how his father really died, but the awful truth only leads him to question, was he even his father? Is he the son of Arthur Clifton, a stevedore who spent his whole life on the docks, or the firstborn son of a scion of West Country society, whose family owns a shipping line?

This introductory novel in Archer's ambitious series The Clifton Chronicles includes a cast of colorful characters and takes us from the ravages of the Great War to the outbreak of the Second World War, when Harry must decide whether to take up a place at Oxford or join the navy and go to war with Hitler's Germany. From the docks of working-class England to the bustling streets of 1940 New York City, Only Time Will Tell takes readers on a journey through to future volumes, which will bring to life one hundred years of recent history to reveal a family story that neither the reader nor Harry Clifton himself could ever have imagined.

From the Back Cover

The first novel in the Clifton Chronicles, an ambitious new series that tells the story of a family across generations and oceans, from heartbreak to triumph, from #1 New York Times bestselling author Jeffrey Archer

The epic tale of Harry Clifton's life begins in 1920, with the words "I was told that my father was killed in the war." A dock worker in Bristol, Harry never knew his father and expects to continue on at the shipyard, until a remarkable gift wins him a scholarship to an exclusive boys' school, and his life will never be the same again...

"If there were a nobel prize for storytelling, Archer would win."―Daily Telegraph (London)

As Harry enters into adulthood, he finally learns how his father really died, but the awful truth only leads him to question: Was he even his father? Is he the son of Arthur Clifton, a stevedore, or the firstborn son of a scion of West Country society, whose family owns a shipping line? From the ravages of the Great War and the docks of working-class England to the streets of 1940 New York City and the outbreak of the Second World War, this is a powerful journey that will bring to life one hundred years of history to reveal a family story that neither the reader nor Harry Clifton himself could ever have imagined.

"Archer is a master entertainer."―Time

The title is apropos: this story is just getting started
By Billy Hollis
I picked this book up on a recent trip, during a connection through London, where it's already published. (I don't really have the Kindle edition, I have a softcover, but Amazon doesn't allow reviews for any edition except Kindle as I write this.)

I've read so much fiction in my life that only pretty good writing will hold my interest. This is high quality writing with quite good characterization.

The viewpoint of the story switches among the main characters. Each section for a character starts off with a first-person narrative, and then switches to a traditional third-person narrative for that character.

This results in overlap. It's common to see the same timeline covered from multiple viewpoints. That's tricky writing to pull off, but Archer is a pro, so he does it pretty well.

The era is early twentieth century, between the World Wars and leading up to World War II. It's clear that WWII will play a big part in the entire story, and in fact it begins just as this book ends.

The protagonist is from a lower class family, and the early part of the book covers his attempts to rise via his education.

The plot is fairly predictable. There are a few twists that I didn't see, but the broad outline became clear early on. I was still engaged enough with the characters to want to see the story through.

And that leads to the biggest criticism: as other reviewers have noted, this is just the beginning of a series. The end of the book leaves all of the major plot elements unresolved. So if you like your fiction to contain a story wrapped up neatly in a bow at the end, you probably ought to avoid this one until the story is all published. However, if you can let the unresolved elements sit for a while until the rest is published, then this would be a fine summer reading choice.

I love a good family saga
By Susan Johnson
I love to read a good family saga. I used to eagerly read Susan Howatch before moving on to Edward Rutherford and the "Forsyte Saga". I love watching a family evolve through the years. This book has the earmarks of a great series.
The story revolves around the Cliftons, a lower class family of dock workers who have a son of exceptional talents, and the Barringtons, a wealthy family whose children seem remarkably decent and grounded. Harry Clifton, the son, has an outstanding voice that offers him a way to better himself through a scholarship to a fine school. Even with his talent, it takes a village to give him the tools to win the scholarship. The book tells the story from various character viewpoints so you can see the help given to young Clifton.
I was so surprised to read the reviews talking about it being the first book in a series like it was a big deal. There are so many series out there that it shouldn't come as such a shock. Lee Child has his Reacher, Bernard Cornwell has his Uhtred and Diana Gabaldon has Jamie and Claire. If you don't like waiting for the next book then wait until the entire series is out. Otherwise just relax and enjoy yourself.
Jeffrey Archer is a skilled story teller. The story moves right along and it is hard to put down. He's like John Grisham- not the most skilled writer but a great story teller. I read this at a fast rate and enoyed every moment of it. I found it to be a fun read.

Only time will tell... how many years it will take to get the full story!
By Susan Tunis
Remember decades ago when Jeffrey Archer used to write those fantastic epics? Kane & Able, As the Crow Flies; that's what I'm talking about! Here's the good news: His latest novel, Only Time Will Tell harkens back to his glory days. It's the most entertaining thing he's written in years, in my humble opinion. Here's the bad news: What once would have been a juicy epic tale has fallen victim to the publishing industry's current trend of trilogizing. (New word. I coined it.)

Except, except, this is NOT a trilogy--this is, in fact, the first of the FIVE planned novels that will comprise The Clifton Chronicles. And as entertaining as the book is, and I'll get back to that in a moment, this is very annoying. Back in the day, you write an epic, it's 600 or 800 or even 1,000 pages. James Michener did it. James Clavell did it. And, yes, Jeffrey Archer did it. But in the very recent past, some marketing genius realized that you could get readers to pay a lot more for a long book by chopping it into pieces. Maybe pad the text a little, and leave some white space on the pages. What once might have been an 800-page novel is now three 300-page novels. It is the era of the trilogy. And writers don't even have to worry about writing in story arcs to end each segment. No, just end them wherever--or even better, end on cliff-hanger! And don't warn readers that they're only getting a very incomplete portion of the story they signed on to read! And make them wait years to get to the conclusion!

Sorry, was I ranting? It's true that Mr. Archer (Sir Jeffrey?) and his publishers are guilty of most of my complaints above. For instance, this novel ends very abruptly, with no sort of resolution at all, on a cliff-hanger. So, yes, this new trend is really bugging me. I'll move on now.

The series is named the Clifton Chronicles after the protagonist, Harry Clifton. This novel opens in 1919, when Harry is a mere gleam in his father's eye. What follows is roughly the first 20 years of that young man's life. Despite his very modest circumstances, Harry, it turns out, is a gifted fellow. In addition to being very bright, he's a truly exceptional singer. Harry's talents are recognized by several people in a position to nurture them, and so it comes to pass that this dock worker's son has an opportunity for an education and a future his family could not have imagined.

This first book covers Harry's school years--the friends and enemies he makes along the way, the triumphs and setbacks, the secrets and lies, and the many, many melodramas. Archer is at his soapy best, and Harry's story is engaging, eventful, and fast-paced. He's a likable protagonist, a veritable paragon of virtue, as are his mother, friends, educators, and so forth. You'll know the baddies when you see them. Archer's characters are not nuanced. What you see is what you get. But none of this takes away from the fun of the story being told. Only Time Will Tell is not challenging or literary; it's just good old-fashioned escapist fiction. I had a great time reading it. And as much as I grumble, I will be back for part two. Grrr.

A nice pocket-size how-to manual. Not necessary for everyone and may seem redundant for college-age people, but useful and concise for everyone.
