Just O.K.

My first, and last, Rankin book. An O.K. plot but I can't get interested in a book where the Protagonist is neither interesting, personable, nor clever. Rebus is none of the above. It took work to stay with it. Just naming Edinburgh Streets that the characters drive or walk along doesn't add much. Could have been anywhere.

I certainly don't understand the glowing reviews here or on the book jacket. I guess it's part of the Publishing Game if you are a successful genre writer to give great reviews of fellow genre writers so that they will reciprocate.

Crime Suspense

Still coming to grips with Ian Rankin - this is only book 2 for me. Enjoy the plots, like the characters but not comfortable with them coming and going. Doesn't seem to provide a chance to develop and know them well. This will hopefully change as the same characters appear in books 3 and above. To me the enjoyment of a crime series is in following the characters developments & interactions with each other.
Now it is onto Book 3.

If you liked the first one you'll like this too as I did. Good writing good reading. Too bad I'm not allowed to just leave the 5 stars. It a pain in the neck to have to repeat myself with each review in the series.

About the Author

Roger Priddy left school at 16 with just one qualification―in art. He went to Berkshire College of Art and Design and trained as an illustrator. His first job in children's books was working with the publisher Peter Usborne, at Usborne Publishing, and then he worked with Peter Kindersley at Dorling Kindersley, where he spent 16 years. Priddy became Creative Director of DK's Children's Division and was Managing Director of the children's mass market publisher Funfax when it was acquired by DK.

In 2000, he created Priddy Books with John Sargent at St Martin's Press to create innovative and imaginative titles for children, from first books for babies through early reference titles for older children. Since then, over 30 million copies of Roger's 200 plus books have sold worldwide, with five of his books―My Big Animal, My Big Truck, Happy Baby Words, Happy Baby Colors and Puppy and Friends―each selling over one million copies. Great book -- but why can't girls read it?!

This is a very cute, engaging, visually appealing book that is wonderful for the pre-literate set. My nephew brings this with him everywhere and always wants to find the hidden items with me. This book encourages focus while fostering a general love of books.

My only complaint, and this is a big one: why is this book "for boys?" I would love to buy this for my own daughter, but I don't want to buy her something that says "for boys" in huge letters across the front. There is nothing intrinsically male about any of the scenes depicted here -- girls can be interested in pirates, dinosaurs, and jungle animals, too. The "for girls" version of this book has scenes of a pony show, fairies, the seashore, etc. -- also things that could interest boys. How much better this would have been if it were simply titled "Treasure Hunt," and parents and children could look through the books themselves and determine their interest.

Great fun, but same pages as "Treasure Hunt for Girls."

My students (3 to 5) love to find all the things in the pictures and count the items. Some things are easy to find, some a bit more challenging, but none so hard that the kids lose interest. The only thing that really upset me about this book was that three of the pages were identical to "Treasure Hunt for Girls," which I bought at the same time for my students. I felt like I didn't get the best value for my money since three of the seek and find pictures were the same. The kids, however, like to show me that they "found a match" when two children each have one book and turn to the same page.

About the Author
X. J. KENNEDY is an acclaimed poet, children's writer, college teacher, and textbook author. He has taught freshman composition at the University of Michigan, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and Tufts University. Since 1966, more than two million students have treasured his introductory literature texts; The Bedford Guide for College Writers, coauthored with Dorothy M. Kennedy, Marcia F. Muth, and Sylvia A. Holladay, now in its seventh edition (Bedford/St. Martin's, 2005); and The Bedford Reader, coedited with Dorothy M. Kennedy and Jane E. Aaron, now in its eighth edition (Bedford/St. Martin's, 2006).

DOROTHY M. KENNEDY is a writer and editor whose articles and reviews have appeared in both professional and academic journals. She has taught composition at the University of Michigan and Ohio University and, with X. J. Kennedy, is the recipient of the NCTE Teacher's Choice Award for Knock at a Star: A Child's Introduction to Poetry.

MARCIA F. MUTH teaches, writes, and edits. She has taught first-year composition at The Ohio State University and now offers writing workshops through the School of Education at the University of Colorado at Denver. She is the author or coauthor of several composition textbooks and ancillaries, including The Bedford Guide for College Writers, Seventh Edition (Bedford/St. Martin's, 2005), Researching and Writing: A Portable Guide (Bedford/St. Martin's, 2006), and Harold D. Lasswell: An Annotated Bibliography. Her various projects as a writer and editor have included many grant proposals, textbooks, reports, and other publications.

About the Author
James L. Roark is the Samuel Candler Dobbs Professor of History at Emory University. In 1993, he received the Emory Williams Distinguished Teaching Award, and in 2001-2002 he was the Pitt Professor of American History and Institutions at Cambridge University. He has written Masters without Slaves: Southern Planters in the Civil War and Reconstruction. With Michael P. Johnson, he is author of Black Masters: A Free Family of Color in the Old South and editor of No Chariot Let Down: Charleston's Free People of Color on the Eve of the Civil War. He has received research assistance from the American Philosophical Society, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.

Michael P. Johnson is professor of history at the Johns Hopkins University. His publications include Toward a Patriarchal Republic: The Secession of Georgia; with James L. Roark, Black Masters: A Free Family of Color in the Old South and No Chariot Let Down: Charleston's Free People of Color on the Eve of the Civil War; Abraham Lincoln, Slavery and the Civil War: Selected Writings and Speeches; and Reading the American Past: Selected Historical Documents, the documents reader for The American Promise. Johnson has been awarded research fellowships by the American Council of Learned Societies; the National Endowment for the Humanities; the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University; and the Times Mirror Foundation Distinguished Research Fellowship at the Huntington Library. He has directed a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Seminar for College Teachers and has been honored with university awards for outstanding teaching. He won the William and Mary Quarterly award for best article in 2002 and the Organization of American Historians ABC-CLIO America: History and Life Award for best American history article in 2002.

Patricia Cline Cohen is professor of history at the University of California, Santa Barbara. She has written A Calculating People: The Spread of Numeracy in Early America and The Murder of Helen Jewett: The Life and Death of a Prostitute in Nineteenth-Century New York. She has published articles on quantitative literacy, mathematics education, prostitution, and murder. Her scholarly work has received assistance from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Humanities Center, the University of California President's Fellowship in the Humanities, the Schlesinger Library, and the Newberry Library. In 2001-2002 she was the Distinguished Senior Mellon Fellow at the American Antiquarian Society. She served as chair of the history department at Santa Barbara from 2002 to 2005. She is at work on a book about women's health advocate Mary Gove Nichols.

Sarah Stage is professor of women's studies at Arizona State University. Her books include Female Complaints: Lydia Pinkham and the Business of Women's Medicine and Rethinking Women and Home Economics in the Twentieth Century, which has been translated for a Japanese edition. She has received fellowships from the Rockefeller Foundation, the American Association of University Women, the Charles Warren Center for the Study of History at Harvard University, and the University of California President's Fellowship in the Humanities. She is at work on a book entitled Women and the Progressive Impulse in American Politics, 1890-1914.

Alan Lawson is professor of history at Boston College. He has written The Failure of Independent Liberalism and coedited From Revolution to Republic. While completing the forthcoming Ideas in Crisis: The New Deal and the Mobilization of Progressive Experience, he has published book chapters and essays on political economy, the cultural legacy of the New Deal, multiculturalism, and the arts in public life. He has served as editor of the Review of Education and the Intellectual History Newsletter. Under the auspices of the United States Information Agency, Lawson has served as coordinator and lecturer for programs to instruct faculty from foreign nations in the state of American historical scholarship and teaching.

Susan M. Hartmann is professor of history at Ohio State University. She has written Truman and the 80th Congress; The Home Front and Beyond: American Women in the 1940s; From Margin to Mainstream: Women and Politics since 1960; and The Other Feminists: Activists in the Liberal Establishment. Her work has been supported by the Truman Library Institute, the Rockefeller Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the American Council of Learned Societies. At Ohio State she has served as director of women's studies, and in 1995 she won the Exemplary Faculty Award in the College of Humanities. Her current research is on gender and the transformation of politics since 1945.

Great for Early Toddlers

For the price, these are great "basket stuffers" for Easter. Another review commented on the small size of these books. They are small, as expected. The picture of the product was not deceiving. It's a perfect size for little hands. It's great for pre-reading toddlers, who are just beginning to connect pictures with words.

Good for Easter Baskets

Looked super cute in my son's Easter basket! I would recommend them for that purpose.

Besides that they aren't the best quality ever. They are made of brown cardboard, not white cardboard, if that makes sense.

They come plastic wrapped in a set of 3 and you could separate them if needed. I left them wrapped to add height to the basket goodies.

Cute books, but you do get what you paid for. Not many words on each page, poorly made. The graphics are nice and my daughter enjoys them, that's all that matters.

About the Author

Colin McEvoy and Lynn Olanoff are reporters for The Express-Times, a daily newspaper based in Easton, Pennsylvania. They covered the Rhonda Smith murder case extensively and it was during a jailhouse interview with them that Mary Jane Fonder first acknowledged responsibility for her crime. Colin and Lynn have been married since 2008. Lynn is a graduate of Drew University in Madison, New Jersey, and Colin graduated from East Stroudsburg University in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. They currently reside in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

Great Little Read.

I became interested in this story after having watched the crime profiled on Dateline. Wanting to know more about it, I was excited to come across "Love Me or Else". The book doesn't disappoint. It's not too long, it gives a good history of the characters and crime, and best of all, the court trial is condensed very nicely. I tend to like true crime books that summerize the court proceedings, rather than just relying on filling the book with verbatim transcripts. I always keep a shelf of my favorite true crime books that I will read again someday, and this book definitely makes the shelf. It's a good, easy weekend read. I recommend it for true crime buffs like myself.

Better than average true crime

The writing team of McEvoy and Olanoff, a married couple who write for The Express-Times of Easton, PA, are a welcome addition to the true crime genre. No cliche-ridden, unedited passages and gratuitous descriptions of gore that frequently befall true crime books are to be found here. The authors set the murder of the unfortunate Rhonda Smith in an interesting context, and they know the local area well. It's only for the predictable nature of the crime and the trial that this book doesn't merit five stars.

Overall, highly recommended.

Well Written Account of a Fascinating Case

LOVE ME OR ELSE, written by newspaper reporters Colin McEvoy and Lynn Olanoff, chronicles the story of the sad case of Mary Jane Fonder, a less-than-well-preserved 60 year old woman and longtime faithful churchgoer who shot fellow parishioner, Rhonda Smith, to death as Rhonda worked in the church office. The incident took place in 2008 in Springfield Twp., PA, and was the result of a number of factors, the first being that Mary Jane was mentally ill, a condition which was at least partly responsible for the fact that she talked non-stop and in non-sequiturs which made her a chore - and often an irritation - to be around, though she certainly seemed benign and non-threatening.
Due to this facet of her personality she often felt excluded, not invited to "in crowd" gatherings, for example, and was subsequently hurt.
She also had an unrequited crush on her 20-years-younger pastor, Gregory Shreaves, and couldn't understand why he wouldn't admit to feeling the same. She hounded him by leaving many rambling messages on his machine and even breaking into his house and leaving food in case he needed it. Shreaves grew increasingly uncomfortable and eventually frightened of Mary Jane.
And finally she was jealous of Rhonda, a recent church member who was younger and prettier than herself. The church had helped Rhonda out in times of financial hardship, which not only had not been done for Mary Jane, but which she had been unaware, increasing her sense of isolation and exclusion. Finally, when the regular church secretary was out, Rhonda was chosen to fill in, and Mary Jane's unhappiness and jealousy boiled over resulting in Rhonda's death.

The book contains the standard elements of true crime including an interesting police investigation and a short trial. Where it really shines is in the in-depth research into the backgrounds and current life situations of both women as well as complete and fascinating transcriptions of lengthy police interviews with Mary Jane, some of the stranger ones you'll read.
LOVE ME OR DIE is very well written, the authors presenting their information reportorially with no phony drama, no "signposts" to indicate to the reader what he shold think, no asides calling attention to themselves. Just a workmanlike and professional account.
I found the book's title off-putting and frankly what I refer to as "true-crime-stupid" and almost didn't read it. If you're into true crime, don't let that dissuade you. This book is really well done, and I predict you'll like it.

These books are a boon as it saved me from wasting lots of paper.it also saved me lots of time as before buying them I would trace numbers by hand so my son could practice. The numbers are big enough for my 3yr old to write on. The pages wipe cleans easily with a damp tissue or cloth. It comes with black marker .
