My 6 month old book hound loves these
By Samanthac
My 6 month old son LOVES books. Board books, kids books, magazines, my novels, he even grabs for Christmas cards. So I knew these would be a hit and they don't dissapoint.

They come in a sturdy box that is color coordinated so the books can go in order if you like that sort of thing. They are very sturdy and I can see them surviving for quite a while. There is a lot of creativity in the textures, you can even feel a cat's tongue!

The only reason I'm giving this 4 stars is because there are several repeats in the books. Of course at this point my son doesn't notice, but it does get redundant to see the same animal in two different books.

Excellent set for young children
By RuthSophia
I love the simplicity of these books. A bold color provides the background for each set of pages with no more than two pictures between each page pair. The accompanying rhyme for each animal flows naturally & rhythmically - of the four books, only one rhyme in one book has an approximate rhyme! The rest are perfect.

Two points to quibble over: in the book "perfect pets" the first rhyme talks about a "naughty pup" - not what I would call a perfect pet! ;-)

The bigger issue is that, as others have mentioned, some animals are repeated from book to book. The pictures & rhymes are different from book to book, however, so this isn't a big deal for me.

Here is a list of the animals covered in each book in this set:

At the Zoo:
Lioness
Green lizard
Panda
Elephant
Zebra

Perfect Pets:
Dog
Goldfish
Rabbits
Parrot
Kittens

Baby Animals:
Bunny
Puppies
Goslings
Lambs
Tiger cub

On the Farm:
Ducklings
Sheep
Horse
Cow
Piglet

These are all books I'm asked to read over and over and over again. I love that pictures of actual animals are used & the tactile element of getting to "pet" each one. Of course the feel is not exact, but its often close. All of the animals have a cut out with the fur/scales/etc on the animals body - except for the panda. I was momentarily perplexed when on that page for the first time! The ears are the tactile element & its blends in quite well. I started my children on these books young enough I helped them "pet" the animals so I showed them where to go on that page. This may be confusing to some children, I'm not sure, it may take them a minute but I am sure they will figure out to touch the panda's ears!

If I could nit pick over the quibbles I mentioned, I'd drop the rating a half star to 4.5, but since the books are sturdy & those "issues" really aren't, it's certainly deserving of 5 stars.

Highly recommend.

Definitely the toughest of the tough
By Robert J. Newell
This book of 150 New York Times reprints seems like a selected group of the harder Friday and Saturday puzzles. My usual solving times are 20 minutes for Friday and 30 minutes for Saturday, but these are taking me longer, more like 45 minutes. (I'm no champion solver but I'm not bad either.) My only objection is that some of the puzzles use too many proper names and obscure trivia, at times grouped in a single area making success without reference books much harder (shades of Maleska, but these are all Shortz-era puzzles).

Definitely well worth buying if you haven't been solving the Times every day for the last five years. (If you have been a regular solver then these puzzles will not be new to you.)

Challenging
By Edward H. Garcia
These puzzles are very challenging but not (yet)impossible. Every one is a workout. They also seem to be fairly recent--not based on current events from the 40s and 50s. My only objection is to the binding. I would prefer a spiral that I could fold flat.

A good deal
By Christopher Grant
I've enjoyed crossword puzzles for years, but until I bought this book I hadn't done many New York Times crossword puzzles, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. Having now attempted about a third of the puzzles, my verdict is that these are very challenging and very fun. Especially at the discounted price that Amazon is currently offering, I think a fan of hard crosswords would be foolish not to buy this book.

The key thing to know is that these crossword puzzles aren't hard because they contain obscure jargon that even well-educated people are unlikely to know. They're hard because they have ambiguous clues that sometimes come close to being "daffynitions". They're hard because the answers tend to have lots of letters. They're hard because you're not told when the answer is a phrase instead of a single word. For these reasons, when I'm defeated by one of these puzzles, I feel like I've lost fair and square.

It's too bad that these puzzles are printed small, on somewhat porous paper, and with an inconvenient binding. I make up for the binding by ripping the pages out and working them on a clipboard. The paper isn't so bad that I can't use a good felt-tip pen like Staedtler triplus fineliners, but I have to be a little gentle. As for the print size, I'm tempted to scan them and work the enlargements, but so far that seems like it would be more trouble than it's worth. Even with these issues, there is no question that this is a 5-star item.

Fun book; not entirely "educational"
By Allison K.
While I agree with a lot of what was already said, I am not nearly as angry about it. It's a toddler book- I think we can all stay calm.

First, this book is great for my one year old because it has a soft cover that withstands his teething, thick board pages that are easy for him to turn without tearing, and is extremely colorful and inviting for him to look at. With the large pictures, he points to those he's interested in and even recognizes the ones like DOG!! However, please keep in mind that it is a small board book (diaper bag small), and not huge like the 100 first words book by the same publisher.

But, like others have said, there are not 100 animals in this book. Many are repeated. Also, there are some very random and out there animals that most toddlers and children are not going to need to familiarize themselves with while learning the basics of speech.

But, if you're looking for a colorful, inviting book to keep your young toddler interested and learning new words, this book is great! Perfect price for a diaper bag book!

Babies like it and the price is right!
By chelle
My 3.5 month twins love these "first 100.." series books! Sure as other reviewers have mentioned they're not the absolute best books for learning, but my girls stay entertained and the book is not expensive at all!

Wonderful animal book
By Richa
This animal book would be great for babies, toddlers, and kids. A great purchase for my 18 month old. I was initially hesistant to get a book without words for my daughter becuase I like being able to read her a story. I'm glad I didn't listen to myself. Each page is a differnt theme (farm animals, rivers/lakes wildlife, animals of the forest/woods, jungle wildlife, african animals, polar animals, sea/ocean wildlife, australian animals, and little critters (insects)) with approx 6-10 pics per page. The pictures are clear with colorful backgrounds and are a wonderful jumping-off point to talk about the animals with young kids. My daughter now often asks for the "animal book" when just after waking up.Very educational and the pictures are great.

I agree there are not 100 animals and they might not need to learn every animal there, but you have at-least 60% of animals that a toddler should know, so I am glad with this purchase.

The American Promise is more teachable and memorable than any other U.S. survey text. The balanced narrative braids together political and social history so that students can discern overarching trends as well as individual stories. The voices of hundreds of Americans — from Presidents to pipefitters, and sharecroppers to suffragettes — animate the past and make concepts memorable.

The past comes alive for students through dynamic special features and a stunning and distinctive visual program. Over 775 contemporaneous illustrations — more than any competing text — draw students into the text, and more than 180 full-color maps increase students’ geographic literacy. A rich array of special features complements the narrative, offering more points of departure for assignments and discussion. Longstanding favorites include Documenting the American Promise, Historical Questions, The Promise of Technology, and Beyond America’s Borders, representing a key part of our effort to increase attention paid to the global context of American history.

Makes history interesting!
By Khat
I had to get this book for History 1301 @ college, and found it here on Amazon for half the price the local bookstores had it going for. The books touches on everything from cavemen up to the Civil War, with many details and extras thrown in there. US History is the most boring subject in the world to me, but this book helped me stay interested and I got an A!

It is the value edition and is different from original 4th edition that comes with a free reader. The real edition has the picture only on the whole cover and is no other color.Possibly I read it wrong when I ordered it but this is just a warning to make sure you get the correct book. Also when I received the book the packaging was VERY Beat up and worn.

Signs of Life in the USA: Readings on Popular Culture for Writers, by Sonia Maasik, Jack Solomon

Unlike other popular culture readers, Signs of Life presumes that this topic merits rigorous analysis and so provides a conceptual framework for understanding it: semiotics, a field of critical theory developed specifically for the interpretation of culture and its signs. The selections in Signs of Life are arranged in provocative chapters (on such themes as gender codes, television and music, film, and advertising) that tap into students’ own experiences with and interest in popular culture.

The uniquely qualified editorial team of a prominent semiotician and an experienced writing instructor have prepared extensive apparatus to prompt the rigorous analysis that helps students become better thinkers and writers. In this exciting edition, Signs of Life examines fresh topics with an emphasis on the emerging phenomenon of Web 2.0. Maasik and Solomon continue to stay on the leading edge of popular culture, examining the hottest trends that capture students’ attention.

"An unexamined life is not worth living."
By Martha Rapp Sayles
Socrates would be pleased with Signs of Life in the USA, as it questions the implications of the ideologies put forth by the hydra-headed media of the 21st century. Employing semiotic analysis by association and differentiation, the editors offer students an explicable means by which to begin critically examining the popular culture that comes at them from every conceivable direction.

As a professor of writing and popular culture, I have used various editions of Signs of Life over the last ten years with students ranging from timid freshmen to cocky upper-classmen. The reason? I can get them to open the book.

Students love popular culture. They also like to show their friends how much they know about popular culture. Thus, if they are going to be forced to read something, they will more readily read an article that can give them insights on television, movies, music, and video games that they can use immediately in conversation (texted or otherwise). Secondly, the editors approach the students as knowledgeable insiders, validating their experience while teaching them new ways to think about it. The excellent introductions (for the book as a whole and for each chapter) present scholarly, and often historical, approaches to the subject in very clear and accessible prose, yet do so with a tone of mutual curiosity; there is a playfulness that coaxes students out of passivity. One of the greatest challenges in the classroom - particularly in a writing course - is to get students interested. Signs of Life makes this easy.

A most appreciated attribute of the book for me is its great flexibility. While the material is presented in such a logical sequence that one can work systematically through the textbook, there are also recurring themes that weave through the chapters, allowing instructors to carve out courses that meet their own interests and needs. One can emphasize the critical theory or simply focus on the topics. The articles are quite diverse in length, purpose, complexity, style, and viewpoint, providing material for numerous pedagogical goals. It is true that some are typical examples of the obfuscated, jargon-ridden gobblety-gook that so many academics have found de rigure; however, these are juxtaposed to numerous examples of clear, communicative prose. One hopes that students can recognize the difference, emulate the latter, and change the nature of academic writing.

Last semester I used Signs of Life in a freshman composition course; next semester I will use it in an upper division popular culture class. While some readings overlap, the book is rich and diverse enough for me to be able to satisfy two different purposes without having to change texts. One fewer book in the bag (and the mind) is always a help to an over-worked instructor.

I Like it
By Tom
As a person who could not give a damn about the United States, I was amazed and dis-satisfied at how much people were so vocal about such matters that I believe were to be trivial. It was obvious that I was so uninformed of the inter-workings of the United States and the media that results inside of it. I am glad my professor chose this book, for I have gain an insight into something I would not have found alone. I am sure that some young adults, like me, were overwhelmed by the content inside and highly discouraged. Just take a look at the table of contents and the amount of pages(on ).

The table of content, by chapters are the following:
Introduction - Popular Signs: Or, Everything you Always Knew about American Culture (but Nobody Asked)
Chapter I - Consuming Passions: The Culture of American Consumption
Chapter II - Brought to you B(u)y: The Signs of Advertising
Chapter III - Video Dreams: Television, Music, and Cultural Forms
Chapter IV - The Hollywood Sign: The Culture of American Film
Chapter V - You-Topian Dreams: MySpace, YourSpace, and the Semiotics of Web 2.0
Chapter VI - American Paradox: Culture and Contradiction in the U.S.A
Chapter VII - We've Come a Long Way, Maybe: Gender Codes in American Culture
Chapter VIII - Constructing Race: Readings in Multicultural Semiotics

An astonishing 752 pages and 8 chapters is no laughing matter, at least to those who are not well-acquainted with reading books, yet I found myself the ability to read most articles inside the book well enough to understand the key points as if I was reading one of my favorite novels. I believe this is a result of using articles on popular culture as basis for this book. I was extremely conflicted by this approach though, since I sheltered myself from popular culture for about 10 years, but I am sure that people who are in-touch with popular culture will be more motivated to read the articles. As for me, I was genuinely interested in the topics for a personal reason. Even though I was motivated to read, I would be lying if I said I could relate or fully recognize half of the media being analyzed in the articles.

These articles inform the reader of how things came to be or what some things represent in America, which is why semiotic analysis is heavily emphasized in this book. According to Oxford Dictionary, Semiotics is "the study of signs and symbols and their use or interpretation." It is then you analyze the semiotics of these signs or symbols, of course that is a very simplistic view, nonetheless, it is still a powerful tool at your disposal. By using semiotic analysis, you are able to see the possible hidden interior of an item or even an event. It truly is a useful tool that I have been using for many years, yet the term has never been in my vocabulary until I started reading this book. Semiotic analysis invokes a strong thinking process, especially in this case, since popular culture is something that the majority of people deal on a daily basis. I am sure that it has already been outlined in the Book Description on Amazon, but this book makes writing a much more easier task with the help of popular culture.

When you are finished with reading an article, you are given questions in the categories of "Reading the Text" and "Reading the Signs." Both being somewhat thought provoking and finely specified that you would have to read multiple times and annotate just to remember what was read. This is an excellent thing though, as you are told to write most of the time in the "Reading the Signs" category. One thing that may be a negative towards some consumers, is this book relies on a class or group environment on some questions. I understand that it can greatly enhance the reading experience and can create exposure to different perspectives but I myself am not a great socializing creature and was greatly discouraged into doing the verbal questions. Regardless of the questions themselves, I found doing essays on these articles an easy task when compared to doing essays on specific criteria by professors on literature that I am not well acquainted with. I can confidently say I can write and semiotic analyze more effectively now from these exercises. The "Reading the Text" are just your standard 'what happened in the text' questions, in which they have predefined answers most of the time.

As for the articles themselves, I was most pleased with them. Each article was capable of invoking semiotic analysis easy and was most of the time easy to nitpick with the abundance of slanting language and emotion present that outlined the authors point more effectively. I gotta hand it to the consumption of products(Chapter I) and advertising(Chapter II) portion of this anthology, for it was the most helpful in providing me knowledge that I had not known before. It was not very interesting, but it was damn useful in knowing. Wikipedia could have probably just been used instead though. As for the other topics, the one that I was most surprised about was the five video game articles included. I genuinely thought video games were still a niche entertainment where the popular idiom "children only play video games" was still in full effect. Regardless, an interesting development I suppose. Just unsure of if those articles should have been included, for finding somebody else to even discuss about those were difficult.

Despite having an enlarged vocabulary, I found reading these sourced articles annoying when the glossary does not include definitions on the terms in these sourced articles or even a little annotation for these terms. Maybe it is just because I hardly read and do not know how anthologies are written, but having to open up a second book(dictionary) or even an online dictionary just to understand a term is just beyond annoying for myself. I had to look up some difficult terms: Chauvinism, oppugned, libidinous, ineluctable, recapitulated, epigrammatic, ostensibly, efficacious, proselytizers, agora, empiricist. Regardless, I am not gonna take down a star just because the book ceases to be an all-in-one book. I am disappointed for the book not being in all-in-one though, since Amazon's(publishers?) official pricing is currently $52.65; for a price already past $50 I had higher hopes for this book to be more than just being an anthology.

If you enjoy pop culture and writing, then by all means take a look at this book, otherwise, pass it. I'd imagine you can't pass it anyways, since this book is clearly aimed at instructors with students and is probably mandatory for whatever English/writing class you are taking. I would also like to state that it would probably be a better idea to get the newer addition of the Signs of Life in the USA(for self personal uses); after all, the newer published text has more up to date content.

In conclusion, I hope you enjoyed reading this review.

Good Value
By GibsonJ45
Hunt's "The Making of the West" concise edition is a good value. Coming in at under $40 used, it is easily $20 cheaper than the competition... and it's worth the money.

The good: Like the price, this textbook has some things going for it. Unlike larger, wider and weightier "doorstop" textbooks, its "regular book size" and weight fit easily in a backpack, under your arm, or when reading in your easy chair. Color maps, pictures, good online resources, and its general survey of western history make this book a "four star" value.

The bad. This text is general and best suited for AP or college undergraduate survey classes, and not for advanced readers or upper level courses. The suggested readings section doesn't give a historiography of the books it recommends. And, what I find unforgivable is that it doesn't give an introductory essay defining what "the west" is. Also, the accompanying source reader is terrible--poor document selection and too few sources used. Avoid it.

The text is heavy on social and cultural history, and uses lots of art to teach it. It lacks a lot of the standard political/great man treatments of the west that young undergraduates might need. So, if you're looking for a more traditional political/military narrative, you're not going to like this book.

In the final analysis--an OK book for the money, (Lynn Hunt is an excellent scholar) but if you want more weighty, traditional material look elsewhere.

Enjoying Textbooks After Graduation
By Meredith Folsom
I've been a graduate for some time now, but am still working on my master's degree. Since the core of my subject is American (and by extension, Western) history, I've come to be somewhat a connoisseur (or at least, an appreciator) of college textbooks on the subject. You can buy used, out of date, textbooks for pennies. That said, I'd like to correct some of the misplaced reviews given for this book. Apart from the service of various vendors, these reviews should be about the book itself. This one is very good. Funny, when I had to read them, they were just work, but now that I'm free, I love them. In particular I like to recommend Chapter 23, Industry, Empire, and Everyday Life. It ties several seemingly separate events together and makes them clear to me for the first time. Good job, author!

A fascinating and illuminating book
By Dr. Joe
This is a fascinating history of Western civilization that goes beyond the customary emphasis on kings and battles to looking also at changes in the culture and ideas of people over the centuries. It's so enjoyable that it is bedside reading for me, though still very authoritative. The many illustrations, often of period art, add to its appeal. It will tremendously broaden your understanding of how our society came to be what it is today.

Strip Jack (Inspector Rebus, No. 4) (Inspector Rebus Novels), by Ian Rankin

Gregor Jack has it all: young, wealthy, and charming, he's a highly respected member of Parliament, with a beautiful wife--and a closet bursting with skeletons. When he's caught in a police raid on an Edinburgh brothel, his house of cards begins to topple. Enter Detective John Rebus: he smells a set-up. When Jack's flamboyant wife Elizabeth disappears, Rebus uncovers a full-house of orgies, drunken parties, an incestuous "Pack" of deceitful chums...and ultimately Elizabeth's badly beaten body. Now Rebus is on a new quest--to find a killer who holds all the cards.

Strip Jack is a stellar entry in Ian Rankin's series, which The New York Times calls "A superior series."

From Publishers Weekly
For all the right reasons, Edinburgh Detective Inspector John Rebus calls for comparison with Colin Dexter's Oxford copper Inspector Morse. Both spend a lot of time in pubs and bemoan the onset of middle age; each is a shrewd detective with a literary bent who operates in an academic town where clashes of culture beget victims. When much-loved politician Gregor Jack is discovered in a midnight raid on a discreet brothel, a surprising number of journalists are on hand--a situation that endangers Jack's political future. Jack's wealthy wife Elizabeth, a noted partygoer whose friends are equally well-heeled and hedonistic, can't be found. Her body is soon pulled from a nearby river, a fatality mirroring the recent murder of another, unidentified, woman. A drunk who brags of the first killing gives a false address and vanishes north of the city. Meanwhile Rebus, trying to trace a cache of valuable stolen books, finds himself talking again to the late Elizabeth's coterie of party friends. Rankin creates a living, breathing world in which his weary protagonist tackles his cases while involved in the intricacies of the day-to-day: pints and hangovers, stumbling romance, wet weather, damp clothes, tricky superiors and wide-eyed subordinates. All are brought to bear, yet all are ultimately jettisoned as Rebus closes in on the satisfying solution.

From Kirkus Reviews
A return to Edinburgh and its sturdy police force, focusing again on Detective Inspector John Rebus (Knobs and Crosses, 1988; Watchman, 1991) as he now tries to solve the murder of Liz Jack- -only child of mogul Sir Hugh Ferrie; wife of respected Member of Parliament Gregor Jack; and, in her well-hidden private life, centerpiece of wild weekends at Deer Lodge, her isolated cottage. Jack himself seemed uninvolved in those activities but had recently been caught in a well-publicized raid on a brothel that--to Rebus, anyway--looked like a set-up. As his superiors try to make a case against a local drifter, Rebus struggles through red herrings, false alibis, secret liaisons, and his own arid emotions until, aided by sharp-eyed sidekick Brian Holmes, he nails his quarry. A solidly absorbing procedural--all enlivened by a succession of offbeat characters and by the author's eccentric but appealing narrative style. -- Copyright ©1994, Kirkus Associates, LP. Rankin is the Best
By A Customer
Ian Rankin once again proves that he is amongst the best, if not the best writer of Crime Fiction in the world. Strip Jack has all the twists and turns that make Ian Rankin's books unputdownable. The plot, MP wife's suspicious disappearance and subsequent murder, moves along really well. The numerous sub-plots, unlike in some stories, actually help the book to move along rather than detract from the main story. As usual all the plot lines are integral to the story. All in all an excellent addition to the Rebus series, if you like good British Detective fiction (and who doesn't, it is the best after all) this is a must for your library.

Better and Better
By Untouchable
As Ian Rankin's series progresses, Detective Inspector John Rebus is becoming more and more likable. This time he's trying to solve the murder of a local MP's wife. He comes up against the usual brick walls put up by superior officers on the way to solving the case, but in this book for the first time, he seems to have made a friend in the force in young DS Brian Holmes.
I'm finding the Insector John Rebus books even more enjoyable since the newer, mellow John Rebus has been developed.
A wonderful British police procedural full of wit and glint-in-the-eye humour.

A slight addition to an excellent series.
By J. Carroll
STRIP JACK is not one of the stronger books in the "Rebus" series. In this one, Rebus becomes interested in the trials and tribulations of an MP who is caught during a raid on a brothel. This leads to a couple of murders that may or may not be related and Rebus getting involved just out of curiosity. Rankin just seems to be going through the motions on this one, the mysteries are not very interesting and relatively straight forward, Rebus's usual emotional response seems distant and he seems to be in a state of befuddlement about life, career, and even the politics involved in the case. STRIP JACK lacks the laser-like focus of Rankin's other episodes and while I don't think Rankin has written a bad Rebus novel, this one is just a filler.

Skipjack: The Story of America's Last Sailing Oystermen, by Christopher White

In Skipjack, Christopher White spends a pivotal year with three memorable captains as they battle man and nature to control the fate of their island villages and oyster fleet. Through these lively characters, White paints a vivid picture of life on a skip - jack, a wooden oystering sailboat as they dredge for oysters--a favorite staple of iconic American seafood cuisine for over a hundred years. But this last vestige of American sailing culture is rapidly dying. State officials have mismanaged the waters, putting sport above business, and modernization above tradition. These captains must set aside their rivalry to fight for their very livelihood. With so many obstacles, it is not certain the fleet will survive the season. Hinging on its success, the viability of the nation's premiere estuary and the survival of a classic American town hang dangerously in the balance.

From Publishers Weekly
In late March 1978, biologist and science writer White (Chesapeake Bay) joined the crew of the sailing ship Rebecca T. Ruark, a "skipjack" that was "among the last sailboats still employed in commercial fishing in North America." Renting a cottage in Tilghman, a village then untouched by development and tourism, White spent the next year chronicling the lives and community of the oystermen. In order to preserve the oyster population, an 1865 Maryland law limited the dredging of oysters to sail-powered ships; for over 140 years, this "enforced obsolescence" approach worked; now, however, the oyster population of the Bay (once "king of the American oyster") is plummeting for reasons not entirely clear, though pollution, disease and more efficient fishing methods have all contributed. Naturally, what's at stake is not just an important sea creature but a way of human life; White mines information and testimony on every aspect of community life, from family recipes to skipjack races to oyster wars, in a moving account. Examining the circumstances and difficult decisions of men like the skipper of the Rebecca, a third-generation oysterman, White provides on-the-ground insight into the possibilities and problems of simultaneously sustaining a community and an ecosystem.

Review
[An] evocative portrait of the nation's most beautiful and poignant vocational anachronism. It's an action-packed tale, complete with waterborne grudge matches, on-deck shootouts, fierce winter storms and suspenseful escapes. To his great credit, White resists any temptation to romanticize his skipjackers as quaint rustics simply overtaken by a modern world. He knows better. He has lived with them, worked aboard with them and listened as they admitted that they were often their own worst enemies. But he's just as clear-eyed when observing their virtues: loyalty and love of family, a relentless work ethic, stubborn independence and a cultural taproot to traditions of surpassing humanity. And he serves them all up for us on the half-shell. (The Washington Post)

Christopher White's Skipjack is not only a powerful elegy for a great American fishery, it's an act of defiance against all that has conspired to empty the dredges of these beautiful boats. White's prose is like the oystermen he portrays: tough, lyrical, and soaked to the bone in the waters of Chesapeake Bay. I've still got a lump in my throat from its last page. (Richard Adams Carey, Against the Tide: The Fate of New England Fishermen and the Philosopher Fish)

Christopher White's Skipjack, which chronicles the Chesapeake life history and impending death of our nation's last fishery under sail, is a colorful, comprehensive, and valuable piece of Americana (Peter Matthiessen)

The world has almost run out of fish, as modern technology strips our oceans bare. Christopher White's Skipjack is a compelling story about how the wisdom of the past can help us protect the future of our fisheries. If you savor seafood, White's chronicle of the gritty life aboard America's last sailboat fishing fleet is a tale you need to hear. (Trevor Corson, The Secret Life of Lobsters and The Zen of Fish: The Story of Sushi)

Men who take their livings from the sea have their own language to reinforce kinship and keep strangers at bay. Only rarely is an outsider accepted into their inner circle, and then only when he knows how to listen and is willing to work. Even more rarely does such an adopted son capture the cadenced ebb and flow of watermen's speech. Herman Melville did it for New England whalers: Christopher White has now done it for the oystermen of Maryland's Eastern Shore. Just as Melville documented something greater than a whale hunt, White's account helps us understand how much all our lives will be diminished when the last oyster drudger sailed in from the Chesapeake… Skipjack is a masterpiece. (George Reiger, author of Wanderer on My Native Shore)

Well written, and carefully researched … . Chris White's brilliant use of the waterman's vernacular and his intimate knowledge of multiple generations of watermen combine to make this an excellent treatise on a culture that is clearly disappearing. (Gilbert M. Grosvenor, former editor and Chairman of National Geographic Society)

Finest Book on the Subject
By Gary D. Saluti
I am a transplanted resident of the Tilghman Island area and have long had an interest in the history of the "Eastern Shore". I have been fortunate enough to personally know several of the Skipjack Captains mentioned in this book.

Well, I thought I knew a fair amount about watermen and such before I picked up this book. Boy, was I wrong.

Skipjack is an excellent account of the lives of the Eastern Shore watermen. It is not only accurate but extremely entertaining. I expected a rather dry story line. On the contrary, the book reads like a novel. I particularly appreciated the details provided about the various families involved. White's evenhanded and comprehensive accounting of the reasons for the demise of the oyster population are to be commended.

The finest book on the subject I have ever read!

Down to the Bay in Skipjacks
By wogan
It is heartbreaking in many ways to read this book - if you love the water and nature, but especially the endangered treasure that is the Chesapeake Bay. Skipjacks are handsome working boats, but to work on them is to know bloody blistered hands and the dangers of running on a body of water than can be just as hazardous as the open ocean.
Christopher White writes of these boats and the last sailing oystermen. He lived in their communities and sailed on their boats. He is able to write as both an insider and someone who knows he has to explain to the rest of the world what watermen or chicken neckers are. The hard but proud life of these watermen and their dialect is well conveyed; also the tragedies that can happen to the boats and their crews. Detailed and well done explanations are given of dredging and the falling numbers of healthy oysters. Also covered are the struggles to save an industry and a natural treasure that to some is a special food, but to others; oysters can help the quality of the Bay- each oyster acts as a filter for a huge amount of water.
The book follows the waterman's year; but also gives the history of oyster harvesting, the Oyster Wars, the rivalry between the boats, the captains and their crews, the skipjack races and even some traditional recipes.
The waterman's year ends on a pessimistic note both for the Bay, the oysters and their industry; but more than that - if you read this book you will know and feel the love of sail, the labor of the watermen and their place in the world. This is a marvelous effort that captures a way of life and an appreciation for an amazing part of the world we live in.

Beautiful, funny, and moving - wonderfully written
By R. T. Potts
I bought this book during the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend and read it while a storm raged outside. The book was a very pleasant surprise! I had never heard of Christopher White, but he has written an exceptional book, one that I have placed on my bookshelf beside William W. Warner's Beautiful Swimmers and Varley Lang's Follow the Water; my favorite books about the Eastern Shore and the Chesapeake Bay. Christopher White's gift for capturing the dialog of the Watermen is exceptional, and he uses that gift to propel his captivating, funny, and finally, very moving story to its sad ending. I've seen many of the Skipjacks mentioned in his book, at dockside in Tilghman Island, Cambridge, and other ports, at the Skipjack races, and out on the bay. It breaks my heart to read of their abandonment and destruction, and the disappearance of the way of life that sustained them for over a century. I will remember this sad and beautiful book for a very long time. I recommend it to anyone with an interest in the Bay, its unique watercraft, and above all, the Watermen who sail on it.
