Abzug's introduction offers background on James and situates his work within the context of late nineteenth and early twentieth century intellectual currents, including psychology and philosophy. In addition, it shows how James sought to reconcile religion and science by psychologically interpreting the experience of religious states of mind while validating what he called "the reality of the unseen." Cross: A Novel (Jack Taylor Series), by Ken Bruen

Jack Taylor brings death and pain to everyone he loves. His only hope of redemption - his surrogate son, Cody - is lying in a hospital in a coma. At least he still has Ridge, his old friend from the Guards, though theirs is an unorthodox relationship. When she tells him that a boy has been crucified in Galway city, he agrees to help her search for the killer. Jack's investigations take him to many of his old haunts where he encounters ghosts, dead and living. Everyone wants something from him, but Jack is not sure he has anything left to give. Maybe he should sell up, pocket his Euros and get the hell out of Galway like everyone else seems to be doing. Then the sister of the murdered boy is burned to death, and Jack decides he must hunt down the killer, if only to administer his own brand of rough justice.

Ken Bruen's Cross is a suspenseful and deeply moving mystery.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best of the Month, March 2008: In Cross, the sixth book in Ken Bruen's brutal and brilliant Jack Taylor series, the Galway private investigator (think a more tortured and tragic--and Irish--Jack Reacher) is on the hunt for a psychopath, while his surrogate son/mentee, victim of a shooting meant to kill Jack, lies near death in a hospital. Fair warning: even for Bruen fans, this is seriously dark stuff (the killer crucifies one victim and burns another alive), brimming with violence, guilt, and a brooding morality akin to the best of Dennis Lehane. We have been in love with Bruen's sharp, spare prose since first stumbling across The Killing of the Tinkers, and we're certain that his dark, reluctant hero will draw many a hard-boiled fan from the likes of Jim Thompson and James Ellroy, as well new favorites Charlie Huston and Duane Swierczynski. --Daphne Durham

Questions for Ken Bruen

Amazon.com: Now that you’ve been writing about him for six books, how do you approach a new Jack Taylor novel. Do you think "I'm going to make this darker and grislier than the last?"

Bruen: I mostly think about how I'm going to keep him fresh and interesting and deepen his character, I don't deliberately try to be dark, it's the way he is.

Amazon.com: What is the best thing about writing about a character like Jack Taylor? Who would win in a fight, Brant or Taylor?

Bruen: He continually surprises me and I get to see how deep the abyss can be. Brant would easily win the fight: Jack would be getting ready and Brant would just instantly take him down.

Amazon.com: Clearly you are a big reader, you reference books so often in your novels. What books or authors do you find yourself recommending to readers again and again?

Bruen: C.J. Box, Jason Starr, Daniel Woodrell, Megan Abbot, and Vicki Hendricks are among my favorites.

Amazon.com: Is there an author or artist you've read or listened to lately whose work surprised or inspired you?

Bruen: Elizabeth Zelvin is the light to Jack's dark. Craig McDonald wrote a hell of a debut. Alex Sokoloff scares the living daylights out of me. Louise Ure...she is just poetry in motion. Tom Piccirilli--the man is noir personified. Alan Flynn is going to be huge and find lots of readers outside of Scotland.

Amazon.com: If you had to give up books or music for one year which would you give up?

Bruen: Music. I can live with silence but...no reading? Shoot me now.

Amazon.com: How would you describe your work to someone who has no idea what you do?

Bruen: Imagine terrible circumstances that will make you laugh out loud and then want to hang yourself. Best of all, when you're a writer, you can read the work with little effort; it comes over like a chat in your favorite pub. It's like a kick in the head and a blast of Jameson, no ice, with a group of friends who are going to keep you right on the edge.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. In Shamus-winner Bruen's brilliant sixth Jack Taylor novel (after 2007's Priest), the tormented Galway detective feels like a ghost in a newly prosperous city that little resembles his birthplace. Years of alcoholic dissipation have taken their toll. Jack's apprentice and surrogate son, Cody, lies in hospital, the victim of bullets meant for Jack. His only real friend is Ridge, a lesbian Ban Gardai (female cop), and their relationship is a complicated mixture of affection and hostility. Jack decides to cut his losses and move to America, but first he agrees to help Ridge solve a series of heinous murders. A young man's crucifixion is followed by his sister being burned to death. As Jack investigates, he squares off against a 20-year-old girl whose grief over her religious fanatic mother's death in a hit-and-run accident has become a black insanity that demands biblical vengeance. Bruen riffs on different meanings and implications of the word cross throughout, and his insights into pain, loss and Irishness are unforgettable. (Mar.)

Review

“His insights into pain, loss and Irishness are unforgettable.” ―Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“An amazing portrait of a peculiarly Irish form of despair, and nary a page passes without a memorably mordant laugh, a wonderful turn of phrase, or an aphorism that any crime fan will want to share with another devotee.” ―Booklist (starred review)

“This is dark-side stuff from a master.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“We've been in love with Bruen's sharp, spare prose since first stumbling across The Killing of the Tinkers, and we're certain that his dark, reluctant hero will draw many a hard-boiled fan from the likes of Jim Thompson and James Ellroy as well as new favorites Charlie Huston and Duane Swierczynski. Significant 7" pick for the best books of March '08” ―Amazon.com

“Bruen's latest is classic Irish noir--bitter, dark and packing a kick, a literary pint of Guinness Extra Stout with a shot of Jameson on the side.” ―The Chicago Tribune

“CROSS sucks you into the dark, gritty streets of Galway.” ―Entertainment Weekly

“[A] bleak and brilliant series...Bruen's writing matches the plight of [Jack] Taylor and of his home, Galway---hard defensive, lyrical and heartbreaking. I've never been a fan of audiobooks, but I'd get one in a minute just to hear the caustic comedy of this Irish voice unfold.” ―The Plain Dealer (Cleveland)

“Bruen's previous novel, PRIEST, is a finalist for this year's Edgar Award, and it's a terrific story of vengeance. CROSS, however, may be even better, another dark journey into a tarnished Emeral Isle and a damaged soul on the verge of surrendering hope forever. 'If I continued as I was, Galway would kill me,' Jack thinks. Here's hoping Bruen gives him another shot at redemption.” ―The Miami Herald

Exceptional - it doesn't get better than Bruen
By L. J. Roberts
First Sentence: It took them a time to crucify the kid.

There is a lot going on in Jack Taylor's life. He is off the drink; thinking of selling his apartment and moving to the US.

The young man, who became his protégée, and who Jack came to love as a son, is in a coma having taken a gunshot meant for Jack. Now another ex-Guarda, fired for drunkenness, comes asking for work so Jack sets him off on a case of dog-napping. And current Guarda friend, Ridge, asks Jack's help on a case where a young man has been crucified.

Bruen's writing is incomparable. Jack reminds me of a car stuck on the rail tracks with the train coming; you don't want to watch but can't turn away in desperate hope he get off before the train hits. You feel his desperate attempts to improve his situation but life constantly challenges his resolve. No matter what, Jack is one of the most compelling characters I read. Bruen also gives the reader a real sense of being Irish, including the religious, cultural and historic influences on their lives. On the flyleaf of Cross it says "Do not expect to put it down unscathed." As opposed to be usual marketing hype, I'd say that's a true statement for reading any of the Jack Taylor books. They may not be for everyone because of the profanity and violence, but I find them exceptional.

Irish Coffee
By Ted Feit
Jack Taylor has gone through a lot in his native Galway, Ireland, causing distress to many as well as himself in the previous five books in the series. In the current novel, he continues to suffer, especially since he maintains his sobriety and contemplates leaving Ireland altogether for the United States.

But first he has to solve some killings and bring justice to the killers. While he wanders around seeking clues, we are treated to the dark corners of Galway and insight into the development of the city and its people. The author's ability to let us look into Taylor's psyche is unique, as is his writing and descriptions. The book is definitely different, but is highly recommended.

Excellent Irish thriller
By A Customer
In Galway detective Jack Taylor feels his past has caught up with him as the years of boozing has wracked his body. A loner due to his alcoholism, he is emotionally shattered when his apprentice Cody was shot when Jack was the intended victim. Jack decides it is time to cross the pond and start anew in America.

While Cody remains in the hospital, Jack's solo friend lesbian Gardai Ridge persuades him to help her on a monstrous series of murders. The first victim was crucified alive followed by the burning at the stake of his sister. Jack's investigation leads him to a grieving twenty year old woman screaming for fire and brimstone against those involved in a hit and run that killed her bible thumping mother.

The Jack Taylor Irish thrillers are some of the most exciting tales on the market, but CROSS may be the best yet as Ken Bruen plays brilliant word games with connotations, denotations, and implications of the title word. The story line is filled with action yet enables the reader to know Jack who personally understands crippling grief as he believes suffering is as Irish as stew.

Attila: The Barbarian King Who Challenged Rome, by John Man

A stunning biography of history's most infamous warlord, Attila the Hun

For a crucial twenty years in the early fifth century, Attila held the fate of the Roman Empire and the future of all Europe in his hands. He created the greatest of barbarian forces, and his empire briefly rivaled Rome's. In numerous raids and three major campaigns against the Roman Empire, he earned himself an instant and undying reputation for savagery. But there was more to him than mere barbarism. Attila was capricious, arrogant, brutal, and brilliant enough to win the loyalty of millions. In the end, his ambitions ran away with him. He did not live long enough to found a lasting empire―but long enough to jolt Rome toward its final fall.
In this riveting biography, masterful storyteller John Man draws on his extensive travels through Attila's heartland and his experience with the nomadic traditions of Central Asia to reveal the man behind the myth.

From Publishers Weekly
Attila the Hun was "the Genghis Khan of Europe," says British historian Man in this fast-paced though often prosaic account of the rise and fall of the Huns and their infamous leader. Man traces the origin of the Huns, following these restless nomads from the steppes of Mongolia to present-day Hungary. Attila led his people in terrifying raids into new lands in the fifth century. Relying on scant written sources, Man (Genghis Khan; Gobi: Tracking the Desert) portrays Attila as a man of "extreme contradictions" and moods, skillful at deceiving both his closest advisers and his greatest enemies. In his military campaigns, Attila moved quickly to loot as many villages as he could in order to satisfy his followers. His armies of mounted archers, a throng that could shoot up to 12,000 arrows a minute, wrought destruction and terror wherever they went. He terrified the Romans as he approached their city, but Man says Attila would never have been able to penetrate the fortresses of Rome or Constantinople, and he died of a burst varicose vein in his stomach before he could even try. Full of military adventures and political maneuverings, Man's lively narrative provides a glimpse of a leader whose name has become synonymous with ruthlessness. Illus., maps. (July 18)

No Great Revelations, Just Solid Biography
By Stratiotes Doxha Theon
In this biography of the infamous Hun leader, little time is given to conjecture or speculative history. Just a solid, simple, traditional, and well-written biogrpahy is here. The author is an experienced communicator making the flow very pleasant. The history student interested more in the military aspects such as battle descriptions will wish for more maps of the individual battles and perhaps more detailed descriptions. But, for general history coverage and an enjoyable biographical sketch of a rather inigmatic character, this one would be hard to beat. A solid biography and great addition to the ancient history libary.

Enjoyable read
By Peter Uys
Although it is highly informative and an enjoyable read, this work on Attila does not quite succeed in making history come alive. The author is obviously enthusiastic about his subject but the narrative is somewhat scattered, digressing into various detours and much intent on mythbusting.

Part One: The Menace, describes the world of that time, when Europe was in disarray with the various movements of tribes into and within the Roman Empire. It also explores the origins of the Huns. They were most likely descended from what the Chinese called the Xiongnu of Mongolia and it seems fairly certain that they were a Turkish tribe, judging by the linguistic evidence. Ptolemy called them the Khoinoi. Part of this section is devoted to mounted archery with reference to the Hungarian Lajos Kassai who has revived the art.

Part Two: Rivals, discusses their settlement on the Hungarian plain amidst the political and religious rivalry of the Western and Eastern Empires of which the northern borders were in constant upheaval. The author draws on the acount of St Jerome of a Hunnish incursion into Anatolia and on the Byzantine History of Priscus. The Hunnish hordes consisted of a great alliance of Huns, Ostrogoths and Alans and was thus a confederation of Turkic, Germanic and Iranian tribes.

Part Three: Death and Transfiguration examines the great battle on the Plain of Mery where the general Aetius and his Visigothic allies defeated the combined forces of Huns, Ostrogoths and Gepids. It also deals with the later Hunnish incusion into Italy, with reference to various legends and myths like the omen of the stork and Pope Leo's encounter with Attila. The case of Honoria and the rivalries within the Roman Empire are discussed as well.

The following maps enhance the text: Distant Roots of the Huns, Coming Of The Huns, The Hun Heartland in the Balkans 435 - 451, The Huns Strike West and Attila's Empire 445 - 453. There are colour plates that include Hun artefacts, objects from Mongolia, a view of the Dnieper, a Hun cauldron, various imperial coins, a painting by Raphael and the aforementioned Lajos Kassai in action. The book concludes with a bibliography and index.

More about the Huns and their times than Attila
By Loves the View
With little information available, Man gives as informative a book as might be expected. Maybe 1/3 of it is about Attila, including what is known of his family, his headquarters, his entertainments and of course his battles.

While the history of Huns and the rise and fall of Attila are the themes of the book, the author presents this period of the Roman Empire in a very readable way. Last year I had read the Peter Heather book on Rome and the barbarians, and for description of Rome in this period, these two books complement each other nicely.

Rome, overly large and waning in ability to defend itself, hires Huns, pays ransom $ to Huns, bribes Huns and fights Huns. There are diplomats, an assassination attempt, competition and integration of other peoples and tribes and turning points. There are marriages, hostages and proposals. There scorched earth seizures and battles.

Man has interesting friends who share his passion for Hun history. The run museums from Mongolia to Hungary, dig up artifacts and study mounted bow hunting. He introduces us to them in diversionary parts of the narrative.

The best part for me, aside from the description of the Hun compound, was the summation at the end. Unlike Ghengis Khan, Attila had no long term vision and built no adminstrative structure. Nothing much really followed him. Man has some interesting phrases for experssing the ephemeral nature of it all. Attila created a bunch of "speed bumps" in the building of Europe and that his life was "a perfect balance of pluses and minuses, signifying nothing."

A chapter called "Aftermath" citing the numerous poems, paintings and songs that celebrate his image, however misinformed, has the best epiteph of all. Due to these cultural creations from the middle ages to Kipling and Wagner, his name resounds as an "archetype of a certain sort of power." Its really apt... "a certain sort of power."

Ways of Reading: An Anthology for Writers, by David Bartholomae, Anthony Petrosky

In the late 1970s, instructors at the University of Pittsburgh recognized that students were entering the school unprepared for the rigors of academic life. The university's response was to develop a course offering challenging material -- readings requiring serious attention -- along with a method of reading and rereading that helped students learn to read and think critically and respond in writing. That course proved enormously successful, and its materials and methods were published as Ways of Reading. Often imitated -- but never duplicated -- Ways of Reading has for over twenty years profoundly influenced the teaching of writing. It continues to offer students and instructors a uniquely exciting and challenging approach to first-year composition, integrating reading, writing, and critical thinking with an unparalleled selection of readings and editorial features. Ways of Reading helps students develop the necessary intellectual skills for college-level academic work while engaging them in conversations with key academic and cultural texts. It bridges the gap between contemporary critical theory and composition so that instructors can connect their own scholarly work with their teaching. Adopted and readopted from coast to coast in a wide variety of schools, hundreds of instructors and thousands of students confirm that it works.

Whoa to the naysayers
By Laine Lubar
I used this book in my Freshman comp. course with success. The essays are very difficult, so the pace of the course is very slow. We read sections of the works in class, did close reading as a class and had multiple levels of writing.
I won't lie - my workload doubled. I graded more, met with students more, revised the course as we moved through it more. This book is not for lazy professors. If you're a professor who wants to use this, then read the introduction first. Bartholomae is completely up front about how much time he spends on classwork.
The results were completely worth it and I firmly believe that the course, with all of its student moaning and groaning helped prepare my students for more rigorous work later. Read some of the senior students comments and stop treated freshmen like idiots. They will grow into this book if guided to.Ways of Reading: An Anthology for Writers

Excessive Wordiness
By amb8667
I was required to purchase this book for an English class. The "short" stories in the book are extremely lengthy and wordy. The authors take multiple pages to state what would have been sufficiently written in a short paragraph. This is not my preferred style of reading/writing, however the various authors are accredited. The passages require thought and reflection from the readers, which is good, but I do not find it helpful as a textbook for an English class. We are required to read texts that are wordy, yet expected to write with concise thoughts and statements. I think that a book that modeled the style of writing we as students are expected to utilize would be a better fit. I would not recommend this book to a teacher/professor in search of materials for students unless they wanted their students to write with superfluous and redundant language.

Over Ambitious and Under-Appealing
By Anahita
This is the "default" textbook for the sophomore English Composition course I am currently teaching. If I had been given a choice of textbook, I would definitely not have chosen this one. When I teach freshman English Comp, Business Writing and Technical Writing courses, I inform my students that they should write clearly, eschew difficult vocabulary and context in an ill-advised effort to "sound" clever, and avoid using ten words when two or three will convey the intended meaning just as well (or better). I'm disappointed to find that all of these concepts are flouted by several of the authors and selections presented in this anthology.

Perhaps this is because I enjoy reading the works of Shaw more than Shakespeare, or because I grew up during the Punk/New Wave Era instead of the Baby Boomer formative years, but when I read the glowing reviews of this book, I think, to paraphrase Shaw, that educators give it good reviews not because they like it, but because they think they ought to like it. They praise lengthy sentences and unclear prose because they believe they owe it to their positions as academics and intellectuals.

This is not to say that there is no place for these works, or indeed that all of them are poorly written. I would certainly recommend some of the essays, and Eady's poems, as a springboard for discussing racism in American society. In addition, one could use Paulo Freire's thoughts on teaching, in conjunction with Richard Rodriguez's anecdotes on being a motivated student in an unmotivated school, to examine the problems of educating individuals in a group setting. Having stated this, such topics are not always appropriate for an English Composition course; for sociology and educational psychology, yes, but for teaching principles of good writing, no.

However, the works of Foucault, McKeon and Appiah are more confusing than enlightening for the average college sophomore, and I have found that, rather than encouraging discussion, a great deal of time is wasted on trying to work out what the point of the writing is. If we want to encourage our students to read closely and respond to texts, there are better choices out there.

Ultimately, the purpose of English Composition courses is to teach writing, not to tell students, as the editors of this anthology do, that the book's selections are difficult to understand but they are to make the best of it. This is condescending at best and utterly discouraging at worst. In either case, it is not the best way to bring out students' writing skills.

I was expecting to laugh
By Kindle Customer
"Don't Look Down" was a good read and funny and "Agnes and the Hitman" is one of my all time favorites as it had me laughing out loud, so I had high expectations for "Wild Ride". I was initially surprised to find it a paranormal but went with it anyway hoping for some really unique opportunities for humor. Although it was entertaining, it never really sucked me in (you know, where you are drawn back to real life but your mind is still in the story. . .) and while mildly humorous, it never forced a laugh out of me.

The action was less than I'd hoped for as well. Although it was promoted as being most exciting at the end (just like a roller coaster), the big "splash" just felt rushed and overly simplified. This book seemed to me to focus on just getting to the conclusion, and I found the 'joy in the journey' missing. In spite of this I'm still looking forward to their next collaboration.

Is Jennifer Crusie done?
By jhl
I have often noticed that authors don't - can't, I suppose - have an inexhaustible supply of fresh and engaging books in them. It seems as if every writer I've ever loved has run out of steam at some point - stopped writing or started recycling well-worn formulas. I don't even have one book in me, so I'm not, in a sense, in a position to carp, but it's hard to lose something you care about, and it looks to me as if we're losing Jennifer Crusie.

If you just picked Wild Ride off the shelf - a book by a new author, for whom you have no expectations - it wouldn't be a bad read, maybe 4 stars. It's an unusual plot (although I don't like woo-woo stuff), fast-paced, with a lot of oddball characters. If you paid $5 for it at an airport, you'd be entertained reading it on the plane and happy to toss it afterwards.

If, on the other hand, you were looking for Jennifer Crusie, who wrote character-driven books with funny and intelligent leads and interesting relationships that you cared about, then this book would be 2 stars at best. I don't think we can blame her collaborations any longer, because Wild Ride has a lot in common with The Unfortunate Miss Fortunes and Dogs and Goddesses, and Crusie's the common denominator here. This is a plot-driven, good-humans-with-super-powers-against-evil-supernatural-forces book; clearly this is what interests Crusie now. Most of the characters are paper-thin (except Ethan - liked him a lot, but he's not typical of Crusie; is he Mayer's character?), and their relationships with each other are largely irrelevant. While the book's light-hearted, I wouldn't exactly call it funny, and I can't imagine wanting to read it again (once you know the plot twists, you're pretty much done). Is it worth the $17 you pay to buy an author you love in hardcover? No way.

Once Were Cops: A Novel, by Ken Bruen

Michael O'Shea is a member of Ireland's police force, known as The Guards. He's also a sociopath who walks a knife edge between sanity and all-out mayhem. When an exchange program is initiated and twenty Guards come to America and twenty cops from the States go to Ireland, Shay, as he's known, has his lifelong dream come true--he becomes a member of the NYPD. But Shay's dream is about to become New York's nightmare.

Paired with an unstable cop nicknamed Kebar for his liberal use of a short, lethal metal stick called a K-bar, the two unlikely partners become a devastatingly effective force in the war against crime.

But Kebar harbors a dangerous secret: he's sold out to the mob to help his sister. Her rape and beating leaves her in a coma and pushes an already unstable Kebar over the edge just as Shea's dark secrets threaten boil over and into the streets of New York.

Once Were Cops melds the street poetry of Brooklyn and Dublin into a fast-paced, incomparable hard-boiled novel. This is Ken Bruen at his best.

From Publishers Weekly
In this stripped-down dark thrill ride from Edgar-finalist Bruen (The Guards), a psychotic Irish cop, Matthew Patrick O'Shea (everybody called me Shea), blackmails his way into a green card and a police exchange program that takes him from Galway to New York City for a one-year stint with the NYPD. Partnered with the brutal Kurt Kebar Browski (he looked like a pit bull in uniform), the clever sociopath, who has a hidden predilection for serial rape and strangulation, brazenly advances his ambitions despite intense attention from Internal Affairs and a mobster named Morronni. An acknowledged master of contemporary noir, Bruen touches all his usual themes in his trademark clipped postmodern style, a deft shorthand that enables him to romp at will through genre clichés to quickly reach deeper and more dangerous depths. No one is safe as this shocker spins wildly toward a violent finish. (Oct.)

From Bookmarks Magazine
While the critics found this gritty noir tale compulsively readable, they didn't exactly know what to make of it. O'Shea is a charming narrator despite his split personality and inclination toward evil (his murder weapon: a green rosary), and reviewers found both O'Shea and his NYPD partner psychologically compelling. They also praised the short, choppy prose, which seemed appropriate to the story, and the dark, gruesome twists and turns. But the novel, devoid of pity or emotion and full of violence, may not please all readers. The reviewer from the Washington Post sums it up: "Once Were Cops is designed to appeal to readers with less refined sensibilities."

Review

“Bruen tells the story brilliantly…the pacing is intense…one of the darkest portrayals of policing since James Ellroy's L.A. Confidential.” ―The San Francisco Chronicle

“Bruen, a master of modern noir, render his prose in short staccato bursts, which is curiously mesmerizing--and, at the book's gruesome end, downright terrifying. A-” ―Entertainment Weekly

“[A] stripped-down dark thrill ride...No one is safe as this shocker spins wildly toward a violent finish.” ―Publishers Weekly

“Shea is an otherworldly malevolence who makes ONCE WERE COPS a chilling and deeply creepy read. That Bruen renders such a remarkable character in what be called clipped free verse is further proof of his writing talent.” ―Booklist

“Bruen tells the story brilliantly. The dialogue captures both Irish and New York accents. The pacing is intense. And the prose is at once vivid and as tight as anything this side of a haiku.” ―The Salt Lake Tribune

Like an electric shillelagh smacking your brainpan
By Clan Lindsey
Ken Bruen writes beautifully bleak and violent tales in a sparse prose which isn't quite like any other author I've read. You'll breeze through this book because Bruen makes a paragraph out of every one or two sentences and the publisher double spaces the paragraphs. So although this clocks in at 300 pages I think we could have saved a few trees and fit the entire story comfortably into 100 pages or so. Despite my quibble that the book could have had a smaller footprint, the remarkable, the truly remarkable thing, is that Bruen is such a gifted writer that he can cram a whole paragraph into one terse, word-niggardly line. Amazing.

This is very good "guy" fiction and the first act in the novel is laced with bitter, violent men, backed into corners, lashing out with bone-crunching ferocity. I've always enjoyed well-written books about the good guys taking it to the bad guys under a black flag. Stephen Hunter and James Lee Burke write wonderful examples of this fiction. But there aren't any good guys in this book. No, what you get here are mob guys who decide to mess with the wrong dude. Stories about bad guys running afoul of much worse guys is about as much fun as it gets. Just think of The Wild Bunch by Peckinpah; there are some guys you just don't mess around with. This is a blistering, savage tale of the NY mob pushing the buttons on the wrong guy and a very good, albeit brief, read.

Once Were Cops focuses on Michael O'Shea, an Irish Guardsman, who participates in an exchange program to become an NYPD cop. He's keen on this because, unlike in Ireland, American cops get to carry guns. He's keen on carrying a gun because O'Shea is a serial killer and murderous psychopath who likes to cause mayhem and carnage. As it turns out, the NYPD is the perfect place for him and he finds himself in good company with his new partner Kurt Browski, an anti-social thug of a cop. When the mob tries to put a collar on O'Shea with a contrived, damning photograph, O'Shea doesn't react as anyone might have thought. Psychopaths rarely do, at the stage is set for a convoluted tale of multiple betrayals and plot twists.

I enjoyed this story although some may find it grim, bleak and depressing. So very typically Irish actually. No one does grim, bleak and depressing quite like the Irish, unless it's the Russians, but Russian misery is generally about group oppression while Irish misery is generally about harrowing personal bleakness. There's plenty you'll find depressing about this tale, but if you love lyrical violence, and scary dudes taken out by even scarier dudes, then this a good, solid read.

NYPD Was Slipped a Mickey
By Tanstaafl
New York City's finest must have been on vacation and the not-so-finest are keeping not-so-exactly law and order. I thoroughly enjoyed every page of it.

"Once Were Cops" is very sparely written. There aren't any extraneous words about anything: characters, setting, backgrounds. I could almost hear Sgt. Joe Friday saying "Just the facts....". This could be a poster child for Noir.

The Amazon description is more than adequate (and may give away too much). You will meet some very granite-boiled folks who make a habit of doing unto others before ....

Bruen doesn't give you a chance to catch your breath and it's over all too soon.

When I find an author to try for the first time, it is rare that I start with his latest book. I figure the author is at the top of his form by then and then reading what went before may be a letdown. I don't think that will be a problem with Bruen. I will be ordering some (all?) of those previous books soon.

Note: For those of you who are easily shocked - the book has rough language (but realistic street vernacular); very little gore; and just a little sex. None of it is gratuitous and all is in keeping with the characters and story.

Nothing redeemable about Michael O'Shea
By Pat Brown
Nobody writes crooked cops like Ken Bruen. In his Jack Taylor books we have a crooked cop let go from the Guard in Galway for drinking and violence. He still drinks and brawls, but usually for a good reason.

In Once Were Cops, Michael O'Shea is also a crooked cop, but there is next to nothing redeemable about him. He is a serial rapist-murderer, killing women when he goes into what he calls 'the zone'. A full blown, sometimes barely functioning sociopath, O'Shea finagles his way into a trade, with him ending up in New York City as an NYPD patrol officer. In New York he is free to engage in his sick pastime and rises in prominence in the NYPD department for the way he 'gets things done'. He's not above intimidating other cops, including his superiors.

Not at all likable, O'Shea is hard to look away from, like a train wreck. It's one of my favorite Ken Bruen books. Definitely not for the squeamish or delicate, I recommend this book to anyone fascinated by the dark souls in some people and in gritty cop stories.
