About the Author
Jo Ann E. Argersinger (Ph.D. George Washington University) is a professor of history at Southern Illinois University, where she teaches courses on World War II, the Cold War, and labor in the United States, specifically women and work. She is the author of Making the Amalgamated: Gender, Ethnicity, and Class in the Baltimore Clothing Industry (1999) and Toward a New Deal in Baltimore: People and Government in the Great Depression (1988) and coauthored Twentieth-Century America: A Social and Political History (2005) and The American Journey (1998, 2001, 2004). She is currently working on a study entitled "Citizenship and Contested Visions of Democracy, 1930-1950."

"The fire that lit the nation"

The tragedy at the Triangle Shirtwaist factory in 1911 is important for several reasons: it highlights the struggle of immigrants and workers for decent wages as well as underscoring the broader social changes that women were fighting for during the Progressive era. Argersinger has written an excellent history of not only the fire, but the struggle for the women working in the sweatshops of Manhattan to organize and form a union - a crucial part of the larger narrative that is often overlooked. What sets this history apart from other accounts of the event is the supplementary primary documents showing the public sentiment around the worker's strike and efforts at forming a union as well as the responses and reactions to the fire and the subsequent investigation and trial.
This slim volume is an excellent resource not only as a history text, but also as a view into the longer struggle women, immigrants and labor have been engaged in over the last 100 years.

You will see this review copied on other books, the review is similar. These textbooks matched books required at our local college. Make sure you check your revision numbers, publisher, and date. It was a little worrisome the first time we did this without seeing the books but it was worth it. These were the best prices, we received all books on time and literally saved hundreds of dollars.
