About the Author
DIANA HACKER personally class-tested her handbooks with nearly four thousand students over 35 years at Prince George’s Community College in Maryland, where she was a member of the English faculty. Hacker handbooks, built on innovation and on a keen understanding of the challenges facing student writers, are the most widely adopted in America. Other Hacker handbooks, all published by Bedford/St. Martin’s, include A Writer’s Reference, Sixth Edition (2007); Rules for Writers, Sixth Edition (2008); and A Pocket Style Manual, Fifth Edition (2008).

NANCY SOMMERS, who has taught composition and directed composition programs for thirty years, now teaches writing in the Graduate School of Education at Harvard University. A two-time Braddock Award winner, Sommers is well-known for her research and publications on student writing. Her recent work involves a longitudinal study of undergraduate writing. Nancy Sommers is co-author of Fields of Reading, Ninth Edition (2010) for Bedford/St. Martin’s.

TOM JEHN teaches composition and directs the Expository Writing program at Harvard University. A recipient of numerous teaching awards both at Harvard and at the University of Virginia, he also leads seminars on writing instruction for public high school teachers.

The Bedford Handbook

Personally after having browsed through many English books of such nature, I find this particular book to be very useful, easy to digest and userfriendly. In my line of work which requires lots of writing of sorts, this book just made my day, taking off all the unnecessary research work and corrections that could have cost me long hours and unproductive. With this book, I can now feel confident in my writing and in my course of work but feeling great and successful. Because the book is very systematic in guiding readers on the proper and correct usage of English in both writing and speaking, it has become a 'must have ' for all readers who are wants to improve their English proficiency. I believe this book will serve me for many years to come, also to my next generation. I can tell you this, you can't find a better book than this in Malaysia, my country, not to mention Vietnam, my present residence. In fact, I just came across this book by chance through my colleague who happened to return from Sweden after visiting her husband. Of course, this book was given to her husband to help him in his course in the Maritime University. That's how I got the name and website of Bedford/St. Martin's before being directed to your site. It's a good buy for anyone who wishes to master the language in a fast, userfriendly manner. I strongly recommend this book.

Soon to become your best friend if you have to write papers

This book has been with me now for three years. During those three years it has saved me hours of corrections and prehaps a few bad grades. This book is easy to follow, easy to use, and a real bargain for the price. I have used many different books in the past and have not found one that has been as useful as Hacker's Handbook for Writers. It is a clear and concise guide to MLA documentaion and writing. This is the only book when it comes to a writing. Great for all students and all ages. My only regret with this book was that I did not find it sooner!

About the Author

Too Many Characters

Well the book started off slow and then all these characters from his past novels started popping up. Took me awhile to remember most of them. Shai Clark i definitely know from Hoodlum my favorite K'Wan book. I personally feel there were too many characters. I liked it but was expecting so much more. Now i have to wait what another year before K'wan comes out with another joint. I hope his next work is a page turner.

K'wan Reigns Supreme

Section 8, the latest and greatest by K'wan, boasts similar elements found in his previous "hood" tales. He effortlessly addresses many of the issues faced by many living in the inner cities today: drug abuse, promiscuity and violence.

Tionna is presently stuck between a rock and a hard place. The man of her dreams is currently doing time. Duhan expects Tionna to hold him down, while he attempts to beat his case, all the while knowing that Tionna is penniless and barely able to care for their two children.

She's prepared to "ride" for her man until she meets Don B., CEO of Big Dawg Entertainment. Assuming he's the answer to her prayers, Tionna swiftly discovers he's her worst nightmare.

Gucci, Tionna's best friend, knows she's a dime piece and dares anyone, male or female, to think otherwise. This likable character has been down for Tionna through thick and thin. When Gucci finally meets someone whom she finds fascinating, she fears she may lose him before they have the chance to become acquainted.

Multifaceted, Tayshawn a/k/a Animal can't seem to leave the pandemonium of the streets behind. This gifted storyteller is granted an opportunity to become the newest and hottest rapper on the scene. Will his loyalty to Tech, his partner in crime, hinder Animal from exiting the streets indefinitely?

Along with a spectacular plot and plausible characters, K'wan unveils his comedic side with the introduction of Ronnie, Gucci's mother. She's a no-nonsense, blunt smoking woman who's been around the block ... several times. She dishes out advice, much to the dismay of Gucci and her friends, yet she does so in a humorous way.

I genuinely enjoyed reading this novel. Section 8 merits a perfect rating of five stars. I believe it's his finest work thus far.

Not as good as his norm

The book started out slow for me. I learned new characters, then had to relearn the old characters, which was frustrating for me. I did love the mixing of characters new and old. But there were some blips. In this book, Jah, Yoshi, Lou Loc, and Gutter were supposedly real, fellow New Yorkers...LEGENDS!! But then, one of the characters is reading the book "Gutter." A little slip, I guess. The book was typical K'wan. Once it took off, it was great until the end. I'm hanging on for the next one. And for those of us who aren't New Yorkers and aren't familiar with the slang, you can sometimes get lost. I was a good book overall and I'd buy it again!

Great continuation of the story.

Killer Crullers was a great read. I have read all six of the Donut Shop Mysteries. I mostly loved how the characters continue to evolve. Unlike some series, Beck has put a lot of focus on character development. The storyline kept me guessing, though I had my suspensions there was quite a bit of suspense. I am already looking forward to the next book in the series.

Killer Crullers

One morning just before closing, a man comes into the shop asking for any donuts with lots of icing. Suzanne sells him crullers. He immediately heads for the shop next door and starts throwing the donuts at Gabby's shop.

Suzanne runs after him and hears him accusing Gabby of stealing money and a valuable brooch from the pockets of a coat she bought from his aunt. He threatens both Gabby and Suzanne when she tries to intervene.

The next morning he shows up dead. Gabby asks Suzanne to help investigate the murder - hoping to clear her name and stop the gossip buzzing around town.

Suzanne and Grace start searching for clues and turn a number of suspects.

My Thoughts: I adore this series- for the danger, the strong friendship between Suzanne and Grace, the romance between Jake and Suzanne, the relationship between Suzanne and Emma, the relationship between Suzanne and George, and the small town feel. I love the map in the beginning of the book. This series makes me crave donuts in the worse way.

Delightful Twist in a Series.

Oh no! Poor Donut maker, Suzanne Hart, owner of "Donut Hearts" and more often than she cares for, sleuth is thrown into another murder!

All Suzanne did was sell a dozen iced crullers to a client. Then, to her shock, she sees the customer pelting the store next door with them. What the heck? Suzanne goes over to find out. Gabby, owner of the used clothes store has a conflict with threats. Later that evening there is a man murdered between the two buildings. Police Chief Martin has no choice but to place both Suzanne and Gabby at the top of his suspect list.

I love the gentleness of the friendships and the love expressed for her Mother that Suzanne's character presents to us. It is not cloying but realistic and makes you wish you lived in April Springs, NC.

This novel is a bit different as Suzanne finds changes happening in her personal world and has to sleuth on her own.

The recipes sound yummy and make wonderful chapter breaks. Even tastier to make. Donuts are an attraction to the suspects, friends, and yes, this reader too.

I am excited by the glimpse of what is to come also. I'll be pre-ordering up one.

Excellent variety and clear instructions

I received this book yesterday afternoon after work and was delighted with the layout and quality of the instructions. There is a general information section, followed by a photo directory of all of the flowers included, grouped by color, then sections for knitted items and crochet items. Each section is further grouped into easy, intermediate, and advanced patterns. The patterns themselves are cross-referenced to the photo directory by number and include both text instructions and chart. I finished a knitted rose last night before bed, and started a crocheted rose this morning while riding transit to work. I'm extremely pleased with the book and the my results.

Beautiful Flowers, great variety and clear instructions

I am very impressed with this book. Not only are there plenty of flowers to make with beautiful and enticing photographs, but the instructions are very clear and accurate. Translating the American stitches into Australian (crochet) is very easy. The introduction and instructions at the front of the book are beautifully laid out and further, the flowers are divided into various levels of difficulty. I am most happy with my purchase and thoroughly recommend this book to others.

As a knitter I am often disappointed by a book of knitted and crocheted designs. Frequently there are very few knitted. In this book almost half the flowers are knitted and they are stunning. This book is an absolute delight. I think it would be fun to combine some of these flowers with the Wild tea cosies.

Really Helps Kids Learn Animals and New Words

My little one really enjoys this book. She is about 15 months now and is learning new words. I really like the format. Each animal/object is in it's own square instead of all mixed up on the page. This really is helping my daughter learn her new words. And she is able to associate the words with the correct items and images. She's learning a new one almost every day. Incredible!

The book is sturdy enough and colorful. The pictures are nice too but I wished book makers these days paid attention to the production and reprographics of their books. The colors of the images run dark, too saturated, and very heavy on the red ink. I used to be in advertising and I would never approved of this level of printing. That said, babies don't really notice. But that doesn't mean they don't deserve a well printed book, right?

Great picture book, but binding issues arrise with normal use

My twins love picture books, so I bought this book, My BigTruck Book, and My Big Animal Book for my boys for Chritmas. A relative also got them My Big Dinosaur Book for Christmas as well. The pages are sturdy and the pictures are real photos: beautiful and vivid. I also liked the fact that these were big board books, roughly 12 x 12 inches and the pages seemed heavyweight. However, there seems to be a flaw in how these are bound and two of them them so far have had pages and sections of pages come undone from the binding. I was able to use packing tape to tape them back in and my boys are still enjoying them six months later. However, just be aware that this happened after only a month or two of normal use....which at about $8 each might not make you very happy with your investment in these books.

We now have 3 or 4 of these word books, my son loves them. We have spent countless hours since before he was 1 looking at the pictures and learning the words. He is 18th months now and still grabs this book and wants to "do words" as we call it. There are words that he uses to identify things in real life that I think he learned from these books. I definitely would suggest for anyone looking to engage in some early vocabulary with their kids!

love the "wipe clean" books!!

love these, for beginning learners get the wipe clean "WORKBOOKS." THe work books are bigger pages and larger trace spaces. These are a lot smaller and hard for my kids to use properly, but I know we will definitely be using them in the future. Also, ALL washable crayons work on them just like the "dry erase" crayons. The crayons are better to use in the workbooks for beginners, as the markers slide around a lot for the little ones. I have 2 year old twins and with the help of these books they are able to write out their names and words already!

There is total 12 pages there laminated books I do suggest use different dry erase markers however. Cuz this marker does leave smudge marks n I'd say learning level should not be 4 3yr olds unless they can read. Otherwise good book.

my 3 year old has just started learning to write her numbers/letters and this book is a great introduction to her first words, helps her learn how to spell as wel as write them.

About the Author
M. C. Beaton has been hailed as "the new Queen of Crime." She is The New York Times bestselling author of the Agatha Raisin mysteries, including As the Pig Turns and Busy Body, set in the English Cotswolds, as well as the Hamish Macbeth mysteries set in Scotland. She has also written historical romance novels and an Edwardian mystery series under the name Marion Chesney. Before writing her first novels, Beaton worked as a bookseller, a newspaper reporter, a fashion critic, and a waitress in a greasy spoon. Agatha Is A Bit Green With Envy

Somehow I had gotten these books out of order and had to go back and read this one. For some reason I had confused it with a Nancy Atherton book; well, at least that is who I think it was.

After taking a break from Carsely and James Lacey, Agatha returns from her cruise with a few extra pounds and finds that she now has competition for James' affection and it's none other then a tall, beautiful, well put together woman by the name of Mary Fortune.

When Agatha finds that Mary has taken the gardening club by storm she sets out to beat her at her own game. Since Agatha is not against cheating to win at all costs, remember the cake incident in the first book, she sets out to win both James and the gardening award.

When mysterious incidents start happening around Carsely and a curious murder occurs, it's up to Agatha, with the help of the wayward James, to solve the crimes and to find out how much Carsely really loves and appreciates Agatha.

DIGGING UP DIRT...

This series of British cozy mysteries is a sure fire winner. The central character, Agatha Raisin, is brought to life under the author's deft pen. The aggressive, irrepressible, and menopausal Agatha, with a penchant for cigarettes and cocktails, as well as a strong desire for romance, is the modern day version of Dame Christie's Jane Marple. Set in the bucolic Cotswold village of Carsely, one would think that nothing ever happens there.

In this third book in the series, Agatha is still pining away for her neighbor, retired colonel, James Lacey, for whom she has romantic longings to which he is proving quite resistant. Instead, he seems to be interested in Carsely's newest incomer, divorcee Mary Fortune, who is not only beautiful but also has a green thumb. As luck would have it, James Lacey has a penchant for gardening. Of course, this leaves Agatha green with envy, determined to fight fire with fire and beat Mary at her own game.

When the gardens of Carsely come under attack by person or persons unknown, however, and a shocking murder follows, Agatha and James once again join forces to discover just who or what is causing all the brouhaha in Carsely. Their investigation into these goings on, as well as Agatha's efforts to get James to respond to her romantic longings, will keep the reader turning the pages.

As with all cozy mysteries, the mystery is secondary to the recurring characters and their relationships with each other. It is merely the framework around which the characters and village life evolve, giving the reader a good sense of place, as well as an interest in the characters, while leaving the reader wanting more. This is a fun and highly enjoyable series to read, humorous and entertaining, with a host of interesting characters. The dialogue is believable, and the plot moves forward at a brisk pace. It is a highly addictive series.

Agatha gardening skills get her into trouble

The third Agatha Raisin book has Agatha returning from her holiday trip after escaping from her frustration over her unsuccessful pursuit of her neighbor, James. She is dismayed to find out on her return that he is now involved with a new woman in the neighborhood, Mary. Mary is a wonderful cook and gardener, two things that Agatha is not. She is also a very attractive woman. So Agatha decides to join the gardening club and make her garden the most visited in the upcoming Open Garden tour. Of course, things don't go as planned, leading Agatha to plan a big cherat, not unlike her quiche disaster in the first book. Odd things begin to occur around the village, with seemingly random acts of vandalism. James begins to realize that he likes Agatha more and more, while liking Mary less, particularly when he begins to see a sharp and catty side to her. When Agatha and James make a gruesome discovery of murder (the potted gardener in the title) the two can't resist trying to figure out who did it and what relation the vandalism has to the murder. This was another fun installment in the series, and we will see what trouble Agatha gets into in the next book.

About the Author
Francis G. Couvares is the E. Dwight Salmon Professor of History and American Studies at Amherst College. He is the author of The Remaking of Pittsburgh: Class and Culture in an Industrializing City 1877-1919 (1984) and editor of Movie Censorship and American Culture, Second Edition (2006).

Martha Saxton is an Associate Professor of History and Women's and Gender Studies and the Elizabeth Bruss Reader at Amherst College. She has written biographies of Louisa May Alcott and Jayne Mansfield, as well as Being Good: Women’s Moral Values In Early America (2003), and numerous essays on women in early America.

About the Author

Roger Priddy left school at 16 with just one qualification―in art. He went to Berkshire College of Art and Design and trained as an illustrator. His first job in children's books was working with the publisher Peter Usborne, at Usborne Publishing, and then he worked with Peter Kindersley at Dorling Kindersley, where he spent 16 years. Priddy became Creative Director of DK's Children's Division and was Managing Director of the children's mass market publisher Funfax when it was acquired by DK.

In 2000, he created Priddy Books with John Sargent at St Martin's Press to create innovative and imaginative titles for children, from first books for babies through early reference titles for older children. Since then, over 30 million copies of Roger's 200 plus books have sold worldwide, with five of his books―My Big Animal, My Big Truck, Happy Baby Words, Happy Baby Colors and Puppy and Friends―each selling over one million copies. He is also the author of Big Board First 100 Words; Big Board Books Colors, ABC, Numbers; and Bright Baby Noisy Monsters. His creativity has been recognized with numerous industry awards. Priddy lives in London with his wife Zena and their four children.

Terrible.

We bought this product and used it for a day before realizing that the "36 included magnetic letters" are not enough to spell all the words in the book!

For example, the last page features the word "circle". Guess what? Only one "C" is included with the magnetic letters. How many "C"s in "circle? Yup. Two.

Likewise the very first page asks the question, "Which of these (pictured) is made with milk?" The obvious answer is the big picture of cheese. 'Except guess what? There are three "e"s in "cheese". Only two "e"s come with the book.

Moreover, on the sixth page the reader is asked, "Which of these animals has a beak?" The answer is the parrot. If you've read this far you can probably guess what happens next: There are not enough "r"s included to spell "parrot".

3/14/2011 UPDATE: heard back from the company regarding this product. Their condescending response was: "We are sorry to inform you that this book was not specifically designed to spell all the words in this book-- only the first picture on each page. We trust this answers your question."

So there you have it. This book is only designed to spell 12 of the 42 pictures featured in the book. I asked why they don't write that on the front, but not holding my breath for a response.

Curious side note: See the cover of book? The one with the blue car on it? That is NOT the first picture on that particular page. As such you can say with certainty that they are trying to dupe unsuspecting consumers as they have feature ON THE COVER a person/child spelling a word for which "this book was not specifically designed."

Either that or they're really really stupid. My hope is that they're merely dishonest.

great idea - function is lacking

i though this was perfect for my 4yo son. he's into letters and sounds. we needed something for the car and i thought this was perfect.....the pages are great - but it's lacking the ease of function for a 4yo. the storage well for the tiles barely holds them all, so we end up dumping them all on the floor. it's not as self contained as i would have like, but the main goal is to work on his phonics, and in that regard it fits the bill

good concept for spelling and reading

My grandson responded eagerly to the book wanting to spell out words by matching the magnetic letters to the words in the book. It has the fun feeling of a game and he was pleased that he could "make" the words. I think the product needs an additional magnetic board that could be placed outside the book on which to place the letters. Digging the letters out of the little built in bin and sifting through them is a drag.
