ROBERT ATWAN is director of The Blue Hills Writing Institute at Curry College and the series editor of the annual Best American Essays, which he founded in 1985. His essays, reviews, and critical articles have appeared in the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, The Atlantic Monthly, Iowa Review, Denver Quarterly, Kenyon Review, River Teeth, and many other publications. For Bedford/St. Martin's, he has also edited Ten on Ten: Major Essayists on Recurring Themes (1992), Our Times (1998), and Convergences (2005). He has coedited (with Jon Roberts) Left, Right, and Center: Voices from Across the Political Spectrum (1996), and is coeditor with Donald McQuade of The Writer's Presence (2006).

Short and Enjoyable

I recommend this book for anyone who has only a few minutes of reading time at different intervals. I enjoy reading these short, but very informative pieces, sometimes I only have a few minutes while waiting for an appointment and these seems to fill the void instead of starting another novel i know I will never have time to finish. I also find them good conversation starters and have encouraged others to read these pieces for a good friendly debate. My favorite piece is "Who shot Johnny?". This tragic, yet familiar story of a loss of innocence by a woman author who has overcome multiple odds against her really pulls at a readers heart strings and makes all Americans feel the problems which face inner city youth. The topics are very diverse and I think you will find something you like. I am buying the second volume and hope it will be as great as the first.

About the Author
Sylvan Barnet, professor of English and former director of writing at Tufts University, is the most prolific and consistently successful college English textbook author in the country. His several texts on writing and his numerous anthologies for introductory composition and literature courses have remained leaders in their field through many editions. Hugo Bedau, professor of philosophy at Tufts University, has served as chair of the philosophy department and chair of the university’s committee on College Writing. An internationally respected expert on the death penalty, and on moral, legal, and political philosophy, he has written or edited a number of books on these topics. He is the author of Thinking and Writing about Philosophy, Second Edition (Bedford/St. Martin’s).

This was required for my English 201 course. It is easy to read and the essays are relevant to today's issues. The analysis and breakdown of the essays will be valuable tools in helping me improve my writing.

Not just for English classes

Although I bought this book for my spring (2011) English class, I read lots of articles, essays and short stories that are in this text- without the prof even asking us to. Unheard of! I will not re-sell this book, I'm definitely keeping it- I haven't finished reading all that's in it yet, but I certainly will. Get this book, and share the info in it with others.

About the Author

The book was written by Ellen Mitchell, who has a regular weekend column in Newsday, together with a group of nine mothers who each have lost a child: Carol Barkin, Audrey Cohen, Lorenza Colletti, Barbara Eisenberg, Barbara Goldstein, Madelaine Perri Kasden, Phyllis Levine, Ariella Long, and Rita Volpe.

We are the closest of friends. We share the deepest intimacies of our lives. We wish we had never met.

In the weeks and months following the deaths of our children even as we were totally shrouded in grief, we somehow came to realize that if we were going to continue living…and some of us were not at all sure we wanted to continue living…we would need help.

Not going crazy

This book has been a tremendous affirmation of my sanity in grief when friends are expecting a grieving parent to "get over it." There is no "getting over it."
It helps to know that my continued sadness in response to losing my daughter is not abnormal, but rather a natural grieving process. The reality is that grief is not a choice, that life will never be the same, that there will always be reminders of the life that could have been. The challenge for parents who have lost a child is to continue to live with tears that are never far from the surface.

Not a book to cheer you up but....

It's a read to help you find a roadmap of your own. I found that taking 9 different viewpoints was extremely validating. I lost my oldest son, Seth, a little over a year ago, and I've began and never finished numerous books. This one finally came through with insight that only those who have walked in our shoes can. It's not a fast read, but it's a great one.

Since losing my 29 year old son, Michael a year ago I have tried reading numerous books on grieving. I couldn't get through any of them. Then I discovered Beyond Tears and felt that these 9 women were speaking directly to me. It's been an affirmation for me that it's not abnormal to not listen to music anymore or become so overwhelmed that the only way to let out my grief is to scream. It's been a lifeline and now, a year later, I'm returning to this book once again to help me through this terrible milestone. I would certainly recommend this book to anyone who has lost an adult child.

Very interesting book, well written.

Beautifully written, this is an amazing account of our glaciers and how quickly they are disappearing. Although there is much actual data in the book, I was very impressed with how interesting the author made it. He writes of various ecosystems and their inhabitants. He successfully describes the entire impact of what we can expect when glaciers are gone. He poetically captures their incredible beauty and all the esoteric benefits they provide. A well written book I thoroughly enjoyed - although "enjoy" is the wrong word as I will truly miss the glaciers when they are gone. I believe we all will. A book that is very timely and needs to be read.

Chapter One

THE girl screamed once, only the once.

Even that, however, was a minor slip on his part. That might have been the end of everything, almost before it had begun. Neighbours inquisitive, the police called in to investigate. No, that would not do at all. Next time he would tie the gag a little tighter, just a little tighter, just that little bit more secure.

Afterwards, he went to the drawer and took from it a ball of string. He used a pair of sharp nail-scissors, the kind girls always seem to use, to snip off a length of about six inches, then he put the ball of string and the scissors back into the drawer. A car revved up outside, and he went to the window, upsetting a pile of books on the floor as he did so. The car, however, had vanished, and he smiled to himself. He tied a knot in the string, not any special kind of knot, just a knot. There was an envelope lying ready on the sideboard.

Getting To Know The Inspector

Oh the pain of trudging through a bad detective mystery! Ouch! Ugh! Grrr! I recently finished reading some horrifically bad novels by a few American authors and then (happily) stumbled upon this weird guy's books, known collectively as the Inspector Rebus series. Ian Rankin, a Scottish writer, is the creator of this series . . . and I'm REALLY glad I found him!

Like a jigsaw puzzle, Mr. Rankin overlaps every vital piece of information into the vibrant plot, from the military and Rebus' family, to excessive smoking and drinking. Add to this fact that the author makes me feel right at home in a country (Scotland) I've never visited, and you've got me hooked.

The story revolves around the life of Detective John Rebus, a hard-living, fast-drinking, oft-womanizing cop whom the author ultimately makes you care about. Rebus has plenty of problems, too: he's divorced, has a young daughter approaching teenhood, has terrible nightmares about his time in the British special forces (SAS), and wants desperately to be left alone. But a murderer is on the loose, and our flawed detective has to work the case . . . and he is soon drawn into the killer's web of murder. The brutality of Edinburgh (showing an underbelly that most tourists never see, nor want to hear about) comes slithering off the pages. (Example from Chapter 1: "The girl screamed once, only the once. Even that, however, was a minor slip on his part. That might have been the end of everything, almost before it had begun. Neighbours inquisitive, the police called in to investigate. No, that would not do at all. Next time he would tie the gag a little tighter, just a little tighter, just that little bit more secure.").

Detective John Rebus was introduced to the world in this first novel back in 1987, and Mr. Rankin hasn't let up over the intervening years. The London Times and other British periodicals have lavished him with stunning reviews ever since, but the true test is whether or not his books can withstand rigorous readings from those of us on the other side of the Atlantic.

Ian Rankin's Detective Rebus, I'm happy to say, has found a comfy home on my shelves (and many others from what I've read online and in the papers). Kirkus, The New York Times, The Boston Globe, and many others, have given this book - and the remainder of his series - a very appropriate welcome into the States. An added bonus, too, is that Rebus, an appropriately dark (in tone) television series, was shot on location in Edinburgh, produced by the BBC, and can be seen from time to time on cable station BBC America.

Although this is only the first of the seventeen Rebus novels, I intend to read them all. In fact, I've already started on my next dose of Rebus. Congratulations, Mr. Rankin. You've found yourself another reader of your excellent novels.

Knotty problems from Ian Rankin

What a pleasure it is to discover an untapped mystery series. It was almost purely by chance that I picked up Ian Rankin's Knots and Crosses, but it will be with eagerness that I pursue the other books about John Rebus of the Edinburgh police force.
Knots and Crosses is in part a classic police procedural that takes place in the seamy side of Edinburgh that guidebooks never show and that tourists never suspect. The hunted criminal is a serial killer - "But here, in Edinburgh. It's intolerable." The book is also a fascinating psychological mystery with the events of the present rooted in the past and shaped by the meetings of minds. The intricate but never stretched plot is full of unexpected interconnections among the cast of characters.
The chief joy in reading the novel comes from the writing itself. As the title and the detective's name hint, we're in for word play and words loaded with meaning. Thrown in is some hypnotism, excesses of tobacco, sex, and alcohol, a love of books and literature, and love.
As the investigation heats and the killer has the "police force tied in knots," Rebus "was feeling like the detective in a cheap thriller and wished that he could turn to the last page." We are lucky; this is not a cheap thriller and we enjoy every page up to the very satisfying last.

Mesmerizing

The series featuring DS John Rebus has been around for a while and is very popular in the UK.
Therefore I decided to pick up the first novel. I was very surprised indeed. It is a very strong,dark and gloomy thriller set against the unusual background of Edinburgh. The DS is a drop out of the army's elite unt, SAS and has become a veteran policeman."A good, but not very good one"according to his boss.
The city is haunted by a serial killer who goes for little girls, without harming them sexually.
John is receiving all kinds of notes which are written as riddles. He neglects them for a while but with the help of his brother he finds a connection in his past to the killer and goes on a haunt.
The hunt is not heroical and leaves a lot of scars for the people involved. In particular Rebus himself is on the receiving end.
The story is written so tightly that you can't help wanting to finish it in one setting and leaves a lot of looking forward to the next installments.
A good read.

Exactly what I needed

The book came very quickly (i had overnight shipping). It was in good condition, a few folds and tears but they were nothing. It was highlighted in, which was fine as well. In fact it was useful when I was skimming over the chapters. Overall i'm very happy with my purchase.

RISE B. AXELROD is director of English composition and McSweeney Professor of Rhetoric and Teaching Excellence at the University of California, Riverside. She has previously been professor of English at California State University, San Bernardino, director of the College Expository Program at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and assistant director of the Third College Composition Program at the University of California, San Bernardino.

CHARLES R. COOPER is an emeritus professor in the department of literature at the University of California, San Diego, where he served as coordinator of the Third College Composition Program, Dimensions of Culture Program, and Campus Writing Programs. He has also been co-director of the San Diego Writing Project, one of the National Writing Project Centers. He is coeditor, with Lee Odell, of Evaluating Writing and Research on Composing: Points of Departure , and coauthor, with Susan Peck MacDonald, of Writing the World (Bedford/St. Martin's, 2000).

LINCK JOHNSON (Ph.D., Princeton University), the Charles A. Dana Professor of English at Colgate University, has taught courses in writing and American literature and culture since 1974. He is the author of Thoreau’s Complex Weave: The Writing of "A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers,"with the Text of the First Draft, the Historical Introduction to A Week in the Princeton University Press edition of the Writings of Henry D. Thoreau, and numerous articles and contributions to books. The recipient of a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship at the American Antiquarian Society, he is a member of the Editorial Board of the Collected Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson and ESQ: A Journal of the American Renaissance.

A great textbook

As a student in an American Literature (beginning to 1865) class, I was assigned to read from this textbook. I am generally wary of anthologies because so many of them throw together hundreds of pages of material with little thought for the selection of excerpts, the organization of the material, or any explanatory text. This anthology, however, provides almost as much background information (biographical and historical) as actual texts. The illustrations, timelines, and maps are also invaluable. Further, the explanatory sections are very well written and interesting to read. In reading this anthology, I find I'm getting a good introduction to early American history as well as literature. I also appreciate how affordable this anthology is compared to others that are available. And, believe it or not, I'm considering purchasing Volume 2 to read on my own after I finish reading Volume 1 for class.

A Good Anthology of Early America

I am currently using this anthology in the American literature course I am taking. The history and background information is interesting and easy to understand. The literary selections are a good mix and representative of the time periods. I find myself more interested in some of the pieces thanks to the "Through a Modern Lens" pieces included throughout the anthology.
