An orthopedic surgeon whose Mayo Clinic residency he recalled in Hot Lights, Cold Steel, Collins reaches further back to tell of his days as a Chicago construction worker and, later, medical student. For a few years after college, Collins enjoyed the physicality of constructing curbs and gutters and drinking beer with his pals. But Collins, the oldest of eight boys in a close-knit Irish Catholic family, felt a vague yearning for something more meaningful, which finally coalesced into the dream of becoming a doctor. The Notre Dame graduate went back to college for two years of pre-med courses and entered Loyola at the ripe old age of 26. The next few years were a reality check: the rote memorization in medical school, the petty tasks assigned to an on-call med student and the shock, in his last year of medical school, of finding his intern had committed suicide. Collins received a battlefield promotion to intern. He eventually found himself right at home with the œorthopods, who lack the pretension of the other surgical specialists. This is a perceptive, no-frills memoir of a surgeon who succeeded by dint of hard work and brains. (June)

MICHAEL J. COLLINS, M.D., served as the Chief Resident in Orthopedic Surgery at the prestigious Mayo Clinic and is now a successful orthopedic surgeon. He is the author of the acclaimed medical memoir Hot Lights, Cold Steel. He lives in Hinsdale, Illinois.

Totally Wonderful

Humorous and thought provoking. Mr. - excuse me - Dr. Collins must have had super-human energy in his 20s to have led the life he did on so little sleep and so much beer while expending so much back breaking energy before a co-worker challenged him to think about his future. I don't think I've ever read a book so quickly. Time to order and read "Hot Lights, Cold Steel".

Wonderful writer and story

In the vein of the Star Wars trilogy, Dr. Collins has followed up the book about his residency with the prologue, the captivating story of how an underemployed college graduate cum construction worker got motivated to go back to school as a premed. The story follows him thru the crucible of applying to med school and then his med school years.

Dr. Collins has a real gift for writing. Some portions of the book are hilarious, as he describes life in a rough-and-tumble family of several boys, the mailman-ambushing family dog, and life in blue collar jobs. But this book is much more than just the story of life on a different side of the tracks. We see Dr. Collins struggle with the realization that everyone can't be saved, ponder how a set of rational decisions in treating a terminal illness can lead to an outcome nobody really wanted, share with him the anguish of treating a badly burned infant and inflict pain. We get a glimpse of how doctors come to compartmentalize emotion in order to get their work done in what can be quite trying circumstances. And yet one senses that Dr. Collins has come out of this the doctor we all hope to have, one that can make decisions dispassionately and yet still cares about his patients. One couldn't carry the stories around all the years he has if they didn't have an impact, and we share with him the struggle to put them in their place.

When Sgt. Dan Mills and the rest of the 1st Battalion, The Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment flew into Iraq in April, 2004, they were supposed to be winning hearts and minds. They were soon fighting for their lives.

Within hours of their arrival in Iraq, a grenade bounced off one of the battalion's Land Rovers, rolled underneath and detonated. The ambush marked the beginning of a full-scale firefight during which Mills killed a man with a round that removed his assailant's head. It was going to be a long tour.

Like some post-apocalyptic "Mad Max" nightmare, the place had gone to hell in a handbasket. Temperatures on the ground often topped 120 degrees Fahrenheit, sewage systems had long since packed up, and the stench of cooking waste and piles of festering garbage grew wherever you looked. Throat-burning winds, blast bombs and well-trained, well-organized militias armed with AKs, RPGs and a limitless supply of mortar rounds were the icing on the cake.

If any of Mills's eighteen-man sniper platoon had thought that the people of Al Amarah were going to welcome them with open arms, they were rapidly forced to reconsider. For the next six months, isolated, besieged and under constant fire, the battalion refused to give an inch.

Sniper One is a breathtaking chronicle of endurance, camaraderie, dark humor and courage in the face of relentless, lethal assault.

A fantastically well written first hand account!

This is a fantastic book! I've read hundreds of war stories and this ranks near the top of the list, rivaling "Lone Survivor" as one of the best in recent memory. Not only is this a nail-biting true story; but it's an extremely well written one. Even the tid bits about their lives between battles is fun to read, especially the enlisted mans humor combined with British slang that's absolutely hilarious. Finally, I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the heroics of our British allies in Iraq. There's only one thing our media likes to avoid more than the heroics of our soldiers, and that's the heroics of our allies who undermine the theme that the world is lined up against us. My compliments and thanks to the author for his great book and for his service in our common cause. Sniper One: On Scope and Under Siege with a Sniper Team in Iraq

great read . the author tells a riveting story about how the sniper is taught and their tactics as well as pulling the reader into a story of al amarah and the firefight of all engagements.describing the men who were with him was moving. i was very interested in them and their outcome. thank you dan mills for writig this book.

Excellent War Account

I haven't blown through a book more quickly in years. It's non-stop action from start to finish and gives a fascinating look into life on the front lines in Iraq. Definitely gives a new appreciation for what those soldiers have to endure for our freedom. Highly recommended!

About the Author
JOHN SCHILB (Ph.D., State University of New York — Binghamton) is a professor of English at Indiana University, Bloomington, where he holds the Culbertson Chair in Writing. He has co-edited Contending with Words: Composition and Rhetoric in a Postmodern Age and, with John Clifford, Writing Theory and Critical Theory. He is author of Between the Lines: Relating Composition Theory and Literary Theory and Rhetorical Refusals: Defying Audiences’ Expectations.

JOHN CLIFFORD (Ph.D., New York University) is a professor of English at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Editor of The Experience of Reading: Louis Rosenblatt and Reader-Response Theory, he has published numerous scholarly articles on pedagogy, critical theory and composition theory, most recently in College English, in Relations, Locations, Positions: Composition Theory for Writing Teachers and in The Norton Book of Composition Studies.

"Making Literature Matter: An Anthology for Readers and Writers"

"Making Literature Matter: An Anthology for Readers and Writers" was a required text for my Introduction to Literature class this semester. I usually do not enjoy the textbooks I am required to purchase for my English classes, but I have really enjoyed this one. This textbook covers many different topics ranging from love to equality. The topics always result in excellent class discussions that challenge the class to think outside the box. This textbook contains many different types of writings such as: poems, short stories, plays and essays. I feel that this textbook is a worthwhile investment because many of the stories are the same stories that a majority of English classes discuss. Also there are many famous essays, short stories and beautiful poetry in the book as well. I have really enjoyed reading all the different stories that this book contains. It has made my English class so much more interesting and fun!

The best text for literature course

As a two-year instructor of L202 (Literary Interpretations), I'm still finding gems. My students are challenged to review their convictions. The pieces encourage discussions and are wonderfully arranged. The book is sturdy and withstands my annotating, dog-earing, post-it notes, and constant carrying. I was worried it may break in half when I first received the book, but so far, two years of heavy use and it's still in good condition. Dr. Schilb and Clifford created an outstanding text. All literature instructors should use this book for stimulating discussions and genuine student interest and inquiry!

Making Literature Matter

This book is great! I was required to have this book for an English course and ended up really loving the literature that it consisted of. I enjoyed the course that I took and the literature that I was required to read for every class. This book exposed everything from short stories to poems and some very interesting material. Many of the readings were considered as gothic or sublime, so it was very interesting to analyze into further detail. With so many different analyzations of each story, it was fun to look at the different points of views and come up with your own meanings to the stories. I really enjoyed being able to go into each story or poem and put my own twist onto what I thought was going on and the true meaning behind it. This book is not only great because of the diverse readings, but also in the way that analyzing each story took everything to a whole new level. I definitely recommend this book to anyone and suggest that each reading be analyzed into greater depth because every story has potential to be what you want it to be. I learned so much throughout the course of this book and really took interest into analyzations and my own opinion on each story.

Very happy with it

My 13 month old grandson loves this book. He has had it for 2 weeks and he keeps picking it up every day. The book is larger than I expected, which was a nice surprise. There are several large pictures to look at on every page. It is very colorful, has nice photographs, and it has lots of new pages to discover even when a child gets older. It has pages for color recognition, animal noises, animal patterns, counting, opposites, and more. I am very happy with this book.

A great book with quality flaps that don't rip off easily. There are accurate pictures of animals that really help my 12 month old start to identify the various groups. There are several flaps per page, so she really can look at just one page for 5 minutes or so before switching to the next

This book is fillled with great photographs rather than illustrations, which helps your child relate those objects to the world around him more easily. This book is also very engaging for your child, as there are many flaps for the child to open and peak under. Priddy books are great books for children to learn new words. We love these books

Good book, just one problem

My son loves the books in this series, especially the lift the flap first 100 words and 100 animals. My one gripe with this one- most of the appeal of these books for a little guy is lifting the flaps, and the last page just has one giant flap! There are 8 different bins at the farm stand, so why are there not 8 flaps? This feels like phoning it in to me, but otherwise, this one is a winner.

ANDREA A. LUNSFORD is professor of English at Stanford University and also teaches at the Bread Loaf School of English. A past chair of CCCC, she has won the major publication awards in both the CCCC and MLA. For Bedford/St. Martin’s, she is also the author of The St. Martin's Handbook, Sixth Edition, The Everyday Writer, Fourth Edition, and EasyWriter, Fourth Edition, and co-author, with John J. Ruszkiewicz, of The Presence of Others, Fifth Edition, and Everything's an Argument, Fifth Edition.

JOHN J. RUSZKIEWICZ is a professor at the University of Texas at Austin where he has taught literature, rhetoric, and writing for more than thirty years. A winner of the President’s Associates Teaching Excellence Award, he was instrumental in creating the Department of Rhetoric and Writing in 1993 and directed the unit from 2001-05. He has also served as president of the Conference of College Teachers of English (CCTE) of Texas. For Bedford/St. Martin's, he is also the author of How to Write Anything and co-author, with Andrea A. Lunsford, of The Presence of Others, Fifth Edition, and Everything's an Argument, Fifth Edition.

KEITH WALTERS is professor of applied linguistics at Portland State University. Much of his research focuses on language and identity in North Africa, especially Tunisia, and the United States. He has also taught freshman composition and English as a second/foreign language.

everything's an argument

I believe that the textbook "Everything's an Argument/with Readings" has a really great technique in showing that anything is a possible argument. I really love how the book, edition 5, is up to date in the happenings in the world around us, which makes it easier to relate to each argument discussed. This book really goes into great depth in explaining how to read an argument, write an argument, how to recognize style and present arguments, how to evaluate arguments, and arguments itself. I found this book to be very helpful in understanding different contexts of argumentation and representation in each context. There are so many things found in this book that I would have never looked at as an argument. There are so many different types of arguments surrounding us in forms of pictures, articles, videos, cartoons, and many more. The evaluations of this book truly opened my eyes to the different views on not only argumentation but also the knowledge and ideas that go into an argument. This is a book you need to read if you want to know anything and everything about argumentation.

Excellent Source For Topics, But Heavy Bias

I enjoyed this book and writing many essays from it for my various writing classes. You will enjoy the topics presented in the book with great ideas to help you start debating. As a centrist, I found many of the topics to be biased against the libertarian/conservative. Even with the more-than-obvious anti-right bias, it was still an excellent book. The reason why I said it was anti-right (maybe you should listen to this part) is because the authors picked topics, pictures, essays, or artwork, that would (un)seemingly go against conservatives and their ideas. Now, I am sure someone else could have made the same book and used topics that would go against liberal policies, presidents, but that wouldn't be acceptable in college. (kidding)
I have to admit that I didn't enjoy the book as much as I wanted. If all liberals in the classroom agree with something, but cannot prove it, that could be a liberal bias...
My advice to the authors is they should try to focus on making it completely even. I know there are some excellent conservative authors in there, but this bias needs to go.

About the Author
ROBERT D. MARCUS, late of the State University of New York College at Brockport, wrote on late-nineteenth-century American politics as well as on the United States in the 1960s. He developed materials for collaborative learning techniques and edited several dozen books for Brandywine Press.

DAVID BURNER, professor emeritus of history at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, has written two books on John F. Kennedy as well as books on Herbert Hoover, the 1960s, and the Democratic Party in the 1920s, including a number of textbooks. Burner has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship and is now completing a detailed history of the American wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

ANTHONY MARCUS is an Associate Professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice of the City University of New York. He has taught American History, Anthropology, and International Development Studies on three continents and founded Australia's only entirely online Internet PhD program. His published works include numerous articles and books on history, African-American life, global development and culture. His most recent book, Where Have All The Homeless Gone? The Making and Unmaking of a Crisis is about the impact of the Reagan Revolution on life and social policy in the urban United States.

For my history class...

I love the history channel and certain history books but I hate history class and this book is definitely geared towards it. It has translated excerpts that still feel like a different language, I have a hard time staying awake while reading it. However, the plus is that you get the insight to history through people who were actually there and recorded their experiences, which is pretty cool.

If Pulse is any indication, I can hardly wait for the Chess Team's next adventure

Like many Jeremy Robinson fans, I was introduced to his writing through his first, self-published time traveling novel, 'The Didymus Contingency' and LOVED it. The idea of creating an action/adventure tale set around time travel that also happens to feature the Son of God?? Who could have conceived the success that followed? I have known that 'Pulse' has been in the works for quite some time now, and after finishing 'Kronos' I was really chompin' at the bit for this one.

Guess what? Jeremy Robinson does NOT disappoint. With each successive story you literally can SEE the improvements happening to his immense storytelling creativity and talent...and they are on FULL display here, I assure you. Who could map out even a semi-believable story featuring Greek Mythology and modern genetics and weave them together in such a way that doesn't make it sound silly? I'll tell you who: Jeremy Robinson. While I am NOT a geneticist, the obvious research that went into this novel is quite apparent and I am sure someone who knows far more than I do about the possibility of genetic organ regeneration can spot (if any) some flaws--but I certainly couldn't. It was hard to say where actual technology left off and wild imagination began in some places.

Oh, and the action?? Well 'Pulse' has been compared to Matthew Reilly's books as of late, and although I don't believe Jeremy came too close to the all-out adrenaline/steroid rush of Reilly, he certainly comes within throwing distance...and for someone like me, that is really great news.

Action, suspense and a great deal of 'What If' seems to play a central role here in 'Pulse'...in fact, if I were to compare this to anything else available, I'd say it's a cross between X-Files, Indiana Jones and Rainbow Six. I simply LOVED 'Pulse' from the first page and for those out there looking for the next Action King to spend some time with, you would be making a smart move to get to know Jeremy Robinson NOW--oh yeah, and go pick up his earlier stuff, too...you won't be wasting a single penny.

Kudos to Jeremy...now, enough playing around--get back to work on that sequel!!

FACINATING READ

When I found "PULSE" in a small bookstore in Oregon, I literally held "PULSE" against my chest and did a Happy Snoopy dance, much to the embarrassment of my daughter and strange looks from customers ! ! !

I eagerly devoured my new treasure in two days ! The characters are quite complex and bad-a**** ... each with their own unique set of deadly skills. I found myself walking amongst them ... experiencing the challenges, obstacles and emotions of each person...to include the evil ones ! ! !

This band of heroes goes above the call of duty to defeat a genetically created creature ...mythological in it's origin :).

Jeremy Robinson surpassed my expectations of PULSE. You desire action, compelling characters, mythology, killer weapons, a book that will make you think, leaving it's footprint in your memory for many days, months or longer, a heart thrilling experience, then I more than highly recommend PULSE !

Pulse Pounding Page Peeling Publication

If you are looking for a book that will give you heart palpitations and reads with the pace and energy of an edge of your seat video game, Jeremy Robinson's Pulse is the book for you. Simply put, it is a good time read. An evil billionaire sets out to discover the key to immortality and manages to unleash the wrath of the mythical beast, Hydra. A Delta Force team of soldiers is called in to fight various badies that include humans who can regenerate body parts thanks to their modified DNA that includes Hydra juice. Gun battles, hand to hand combat, monster mauling, it's all here. I can't recommend this book enough.

I've read and enjoyed a number of Robinson's novels and I think this is his best. He is firing on all cylinders here, providing a page turner to the nth degree. If you combined the DNA from some of the best authors in this genre (Rollins, Crichton, Reilly, etc.) and created some mad scientist concoction, you would end up with Jeremy Robinson clacking away on his computer keyboard churning out action-packed prose. Pulse is the perfect summer read.

About the Author
MICHAEL MEYER (Ph.D., University of Connecticut) has taught introductory writing and literature courses for more than thirty years — since 1981 at the University of Connecticut and before that at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and the College of William and Mary. His articles have appeared in such distinguished journals as American Literature, Studies in American Renaissance, and the Virginia Quarterly Review, and he is former president of the Thoreau Society and coauthor (with Walter Harding) of The New Thoreau Handbook, a standard reference source. His other books for Bedford/St. Martin’s include The Bedford Introduction to Literature, Eighth Edition, Poetry: An Introduction, Fifth Edition, and Thinking and Writing About Literature, Second Edition.

Good book

Used it many times last semester. It is updated but it does its job. It is a better way to use this one than the new updated one. It is missing some of its stories but you are able to view them online, so you might as well by this one.

Great Price and received in a short time

I had started this semester thinking I had all my books but turns out was the only one I was missing. I have english 2 days a week and I thought for a while I could go all semester without it, but I learned that wasnt true after we started doing essays on the assignments in the book. I didnt know how much the textbook was gonna cost at first so I was dreading having to buy it. But I found this one for a great price and it got to me within the week and I was able to jump right in with the rest of my english class. As far as the contents of the book, Im not huge on poetry, but I like drama and theres plenty of that in there.
