this may be one of the earliest Rebus novels, but it is without shadow of a doubt one of the best. Ian Rankin here presentes an excellent serial killer novel, published around the time when the sub-genre itself was really on it's infancy. (After all, there weren't all that many serial killer novels around in 1991) It's a very assured, seasoned, mature novel, somewhat before it's time.
Rebus is a great character, and here his development continues. However, we are presented with a great twist to the normal formula here...Rebus has been sent to London to work on a case, and the fish-out-of-water effect really works very well. Instead of the in-depth and realistic descriptions of Edinburgh, we now see London through Rebus, a visitors eyes, and Rankin proves that his evocations of place are not merely limited to Edinburgh. He describes London excellently, and observing Rebus wandering round the city like a lost soul (until he realises that, in terms of problems, London is basically the same as his home turf, when he seems to get more comfortable with the place) is really interesting.
The plot is great, and it twists and turns subtly but excellently, with Rankin misleading the reader like an illusionst all the way to the end as to the real identity of the killer. He shocks and surprises again and again, until a brilliantly exciting climax, a car chase through the busy streets of London.
Along the way, Rebus meets some brilliant characters, several of whom i would love to see again in the future. George Flight, his opposite number in London, is a wonderfully drawn creation. He is a likeable man, and a great copper. He is darawn well, and i liked the way Rankin shied away from the cliche of making him an unlikeable, difficult to work with, arrogant and not very good police-officer. Instead, we are prsented with a policeman equal to Rebus in ability, whose talents compliment each other well. Another great character is Liza Frazer, the young psychologist who volunteers to help Rebus draw up a profile of the killer.
All in all, this is a brilliant book. It suceeds on every single leve, and while the end does seem a little rushed, and i would rather the book were a bit longer, this book ranks among Rankin's best work. Which, considering the calibre of almost all his books, means that this book is very, very good indeed.

Dark and Chilling Tale

I've read all of Ian Rankin's Inspector Rebus tales. Thus, I've spent many hours with John Rebus, and his deep, dark, intensity. His world of pain and loss is usually Edinburgh where the city becomes a living being as conscious and present as Rebus himself-and the shadows that fill his life. In Tooth and Nail, we are thrust with Rebus into an alien land, London, and much more into the alien mind of the murderer. The insanity within the serial killer is disconcerting, creating anixity within us as we read the words. No longer are we curled up with a good book reading about paper characters. We become no more safe from the demons of imagination than the do victims in the novel. But Mr. Rankin not only chills us, he saves us, at least for the moment. I could not bear such unease if it wasn't for the realization that Inspector Rebus will succeed in the end, at least enough for me to sleep without nightmares . . bravo, Mr. Rankin. You are an artist.

Dogged Detective Work British Style

In the genre of murder/thriller/detective works, I read quite a few authors. Most of them have a detective team/person that they write about for most of their stories. I further break that down into American/British/Other nationalities as I like to look at other cultures other than mine here in the U.S. I have settled down with Peter Robinson, PD James, and Ian Rankin as the British authors of choice. I'm sure that there are more out there, and would love to hear from anyone that reads another that I should include into my reading habit.

Tooth and Nail (formerly called Wolfman) is the third book in the detective, John Rebus series. It is not a great story nor is it very exciting - although there are moments. But instead, it seems that Rankin concerned himself with the further development of Rebus - a little less dark in this book - and those surrounding him. The detective work was not really a focus nor was the serial killer. I enjoyed this work, but as I sit down to write the review, I cannot say why exactly. It was rather formulaic and the killer rather poorly developed. The verbal sparring was adequate, but not at top of his game. That said, I really couldn't put the book down. The John Rebus character has me hooked. He is somewhat similar to Alan Banks of the Peter Robinson series, but there is a darker side that showed up in the first two novels. In this book, you could feel that darker side, but it only threatened to show.

Rebus is called from Edinburgh to London to help with a serial killer that has stymied the local coppers. While there is some animosity amongst the troops for bringing in an outsider, the development of this part of the plot is lacking. Rebus meets up with his divorced wife and his teenage daughter, and we learn a little about them, but they are incidental to the story.

The story is short (275 pages) and although it continues the saga of John Rebus, I am always skeptical when they change the title of a book and re-publish it. No doubt this is not one of Rankin's better attempts. However, if you have read the previous two books and are hooked on this series, you will want to read this one just to keep in the loop. If you haven't read Rankin, do not start with this one.

“What Would You Do If She Were Your Mother?” (Answer: Take Action!)
Imagine this scenario: You’re a career woman with a family. You’ve noticed that your mother’s memory has been going downhill for a couple of years. She mixes up the names of some of her friends, she’s missed two bill payments, and she recently dropped out of her weekly bridge club, saying she prefers being at home. She denies any memory problems and takes pleasure in saying, “Even my family doctor said I was in great shape at my last physical three weeks ago.”
You take a day off and bring her to the doctor, who sees her privately for about twenty minutes. The doctor then invites you to join them and says that your mother may have a mild memory problem (which you already knew!) but that it’s not Alzheimer’s. Your mother, relieved, smiles at the doctor and gives you an “I told you so” look. You are too uncomfortable to ask the doctor what tests she did, how accurate the tests are, and whether you should seek a second opinion. Back at home, you say to your mother, “Looks like you aced the tests the doctor gave you. Were they difficult?” Your mother answers, “All I had to do was draw a round clock. I passed, so don’t bother me about my memory anymore.”
Nearly two years after that visit, your mother’s short-term memory has gotten much worse. She repeats herself often, as though she has forgotten what she said just minutes ago. She has also stopped reading her favorite magazines, and her hairdresser says she is showing up for “appointments” that she never made. A family friend calls to say that your mother got lost on her way to their house even though she had been there many times before. You take your mother back to the doctor, and this time the doctor orders a brain scan and blood work. When the doctor calls back a few days later, she says your mother has early Alzheimer’s disease and should try a medication. The doctor does not tell you the test results or refer you to a specialist but does transfer you to the clinic’s social worker, who suggests you call the local Alzheimer’s Association chapter.
When you hang up from the call, you’re stunned and you don’t know where to begin. You have no one to help you decide whether you should tell your mother the diagnosis, whether she can live on her own, what will happen to her next. Is it a definitive diagnosis? Should you take her for another evaluation? Should she take any medications?
Your questions are beginning to snowball. You vaguely remember hearing about promising treatments on the news, and you’ve seen newspaper ads seeking participants with Alzheimer’s for a clinical trial—but how do you make sense of this information? Bewildered by the differing options for treatment and care, and worried about your own future, you wish you could ask a top doctor: “What would you do if she were your mother?”
That is just the question we want to answer in this book. As a doctor who specializes in treating and studying Alzheimer’s disease, and a social worker with years of experience teaching people how to live with and care for those with the illness, we are grounded in the latest advances in the field as well as the inside information you need to take charge. We want to help you create a plan of action to get the best diagnosis and treatment for the person in your life who has or may have Alzheimer’s. That action plan will also help you find the best support for the person with Alzheimer’s and the person taking care of him or her.
In fact, the idea for our book arose when Dr. Doraiswamy realized that he was repeatedly asked the very question posed by the daughter in this scenario. In lectures delivered to medical and lay audiences alike, the most poignant and common query was, “What would you do if your mother was starting to have memory problems?”
Embedded in that question, he understood, was people’s belief that expert physicians provide a higher level of medical care for their immediate family members or close friends than for routine patients. To test that perception, he conducted a survey of more than a hundred Alzheimer’s experts and found his intuition was correct. In each of several questions posed—whether about treatment options for early memory problems or the types of diagnostic tests doctors said they’d prescribe—the physicians said they would indeed order better, more sophisticated tests and treatments for “their own” than for the average patient.
The idea that a doctor’s family and friends might get better care than others is neither surprising nor fair. But it is a reality we’d like to change. Our intent is to open up that expert knowledge base to anyone diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or its precursors and to those who care for them so that you can get the most from your doctors, from your local chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, the leading and the oldest Alzheimer’s support and research organization, and from other community resources.

A fabuous resource

This book gives me the latest research based information from two world class experts on Alzheimer's in terms of diagnostic tools, treatment options, and caregiving issues and all the complexities involved with every one of these aspects.
As memory problems and dementia are to be faced by many of us in ourselves or our loved ones at some point in our lives, this great resource has helped me take better charge of this important issue.

Excellent Resource

This book has been a godsend for myself and my family. My Dad was recently diagnoised with Alzheimer's. This book helped me ask intelligent questions when speaking to his doctor. It's a diesease people know so little about. It's very helpful in helping determine what type of doctor a alzheimer suffer should be seeing and the test available. I wish I'd had this book when we first suspected there maybe a problem. I'm an avid reader and have read many self help books and this has to be one of the most helpful books I have ever read.

Perfect for diaper bag

This book is perfect for the diaper bag! It's small, and my 13-month old can enjoy it whether or not anyone is available to read it to her. It has kept her entertained through many restaurant mealtimes and car rides. You'll be amazed how many words your child knows when you ask her to point to specific pictures throughout the book!

Simple books are the best

"First 100 Words" by Roger Priddy was bought as a gift for my sons’s first birthday and it is the perfect book for a one year old. It is quite a basic book and the sort of board book most children will have at some stage in their life. It definitely deserves mention, as my son chooses it from his library nearly every day.

Previous reviews have indicated some confusion over the book size. This version of the book is pretty small (it's 5 x 6 inches; an over-sized ABC/colors version can be found here), and it can withstand rough little hands as it is a board book.

Each brightly colored page shows various photographs alongside the corresponding word. I like that it uses photographs instead of illustrations (animals wearing clothes, etc.). The pages are split into themes of things your LO will probably recognize from everyday life, such as clothes, food, things that go and so on.

My son has had this book for a couple of months now and it’s been a huge hit with him. He will sit on the floor and look through it himself. Together, we look at the pages and I point to each picture and say the word. I’ve started him with some Tiny Tutor videos to supplement our lessons while I do chores around the house. We do this most days and the repetition seems to be paying off, as he seems to recognize a new thing in the book every day.

Although rather basic on the face of it, I am really delighted with this book and wish we’d had it sooner. It is selling for under $5 on Amazon which I think is a real bargain. I’ve noticed there are some similar titles, such as First 100 Animals and First 100 Numbers Colors Shapes. I will be looking to purchase these in the future too. It seems the simple things really are the best sometimes.

Best book for toddlers at every learning stage!

Bought this book for my 1 year old as she began to show an interest in looking at books herself. It is her favorite! Not only is the outside cover soft, but the pages inside are study boards. The book itself is small, perfect size for a toddler with small hands. She can carry it around and turn each page on her own. Every two pages has a theme, such as "Outside" or "Bath" or "Toys", every word has its own colorful square and photo. This is a great tool for a young toddler who is beginning to learn how to say the names of everyday objects or activities. My daughter and I will sit down and I will point to each object and say the word, she will try and repeat the sound. Sometimes I will say "show me where the cat is" or "can you point to the airplane" and she loves finding the objects on the page! I loved this book so much we bought the "first 100 animals" also. Worth every penny and more!

This book is excellent for a down and dirty grasp of Fascism in Italy and the rise and fall of it's not so gloriously leader. With the primary documents and the concise breakdown by the author this small book packs a big, educational punch. Worth the read.

About the Author

Roger Priddy left school at 16 with just one qualification―in art. He went to Berkshire College of Art and Design and trained as an illustrator. His first job in children's books was working with the publisher Peter Usborne, at Usborne Publishing, and then he worked with Peter Kindersley at Dorling Kindersley, where he spent 16 years. Priddy became Creative Director of DK's Children's Division and was Managing Director of the children's mass market publisher Funfax when it was acquired by DK.

In 2000, he created Priddy Books with John Sargent at St Martin's Press to create innovative and imaginative titles for children, from first books for babies through early reference titles for older children. Since then, over 30 million copies of Roger's 200 plus books have sold worldwide, with five of his books―My Big Animal, My Big Truck, Happy Baby Words, Happy Baby Colors and Puppy and Friends―each selling over one million copies. He is also the author of Big Board First 100 Words; Big Board Books Colors, ABC, Numbers; and Bright Baby Noisy Monsters. His creativity has been recognized with numerous industry awards. Priddy lives in London with his wife Zena and their four children.

Better than Kumon Write & Wipe

Due to gift overlaps, we have these cards *and* the Kumon Write & Wipe cards, and overall I prefer these from Roger Priddy. Both sides of the cards in this set can be wiped clean, and upper and lower case is addressed in one set. The connection to real-world objects is also stronger than in the Kumon Write & Wipe, with the object right next to (or above) the letter being practiced. Upper and lower case letters are traceable, and four images of objects starting with that letter are on each card. One side is to practice "large" tracing (with one image of corresponding object) and one side is to practice slightly smaller tracing (with three corresponding images), with several traceable letters and room for more advanced writers to try their own (that would be later, in our case). In contrast, Kumon cards are wipeable only on one side; only one letter can be traced/practiced per card; the real-world object is on the opposite side of the card from where the tracing takes place; and you have to buy two separate sets to practice lower and upper case. The *only* plus I see with Kumon is that they have stars and circles to emphasize where to start/end the tracing. I think the Roger Priddy set will grow with children better as their tracing and writing skills evolve.

Great for preschoolers

My 3 year old likes to sit quietly and trace the letters on the cards. She is also learning them in preschool, so she recognizes each of them. Sometimes she asks us to sit with her and do some, which is easy because it comes with 3 dry erase markers. I would highly recommend them to anyone with a 3-5 year old who is learning letters. One side shows the capital and lowercase letter with a picture of something that begins with that letter, while the other side shows a word starting with that letter. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is that the cards are sometimes hard to wipe off if you leave markings on them and put them away. If you wipe them off when you are done playing with them, then it's not a problem. My 3 year old is still learning that concept.

These cards have gotten a lot of use over the past year. Our kindergartner enjoys practicing letters and so do our preschool-age twins who are just learning to form letters. The beauty is they can be reused over and over. The markers wipe off easily and also come out of clothing easily. Everything (cards, markers, wipe) fits into a plastic case for easily transport. Overall a great product.

About the Author

TETSUYA MIYAMOTO, the creator of KenKen, is a math teacher who runs a unique mathematics class for grade school children in Japan where he practices "The Art of Teaching Without Teaching." Fun puzzles

I like these ken ken puzzles. If you are a fan of suduko, you'll like these also. My only criticism of this book is it really goes from easy to impossibly hard puzzles. I'd prefer that there are some in the middle.

About the Author
Elizabeth Wardle is an associate professor and the Director of Writing Programs at the University of Central Florida. Her research interests center on genre theory, transfer of writing-related knowledge, and infusing composition classrooms with the field's best understandings of how writing works. She is currently conducting a study examining the impact of smaller class size on the learning of composition students, as well as a study examining the impact of the writing-about-writing pedagogy on student writing and attitudes about writing.  Doug Downs is an assistant professor of rhetoric and composition in the Department of English at Montana State University. His research interests center on research-writing pedagogy and facilitating undergraduate research both in first-year composition and across the undergraduate curriculum. He continues to work extensively with Elizabeth Wardle on writing-about-writing pedagogies and is currently studying problems of researcher authority in undergraduate research in the humanities.

About the Author

Andy Griffiths is the New York Times bestselling author of The Day My Butt Went Psycho!, Zombie Butts from Uranus!, Butt Wars! The Final Conflict, and The Big Fat Cow That Goes Kapow. FINALLY my 7 year old wants to read!

I saw this in the store and thought my son *might* be interested in this wacky book. I brought it home and read him a few pages and asked him to take it from there. He didn't want to because he NEVER wants to read. I told him that was fine but I wasn't going to read it to him and that he had to do it himself if he wanted to see what happens next. He waited until he knew I was serious and then he dug in. He absolutely never reads out loud without complaining and it was amazing to watch. He started very slowly and gained confidence and speed as he realized this was a big looking book but HE could read it without help. It was so good for his confidence that he wanted to read it to his sister once he finished the book. I had to go right out and buy the next in the series right away. He even sat down and started drawing and writing his own book inspired by this one. I can't say enough about this book!!

Modern Dr. Suess
By One more reason to love Scaredy Squirrel.
As a teacher of struggling readers,this book has been a big hit. It looks and feels like a bigger chapter book, but is fun and easy to read. The students really enjoy it and are willing to read it over and over again, which is just what they need. The illustrations are simple and funny. Even my third graders and other fluent readers have fun with the rhymes and silly stories.

The Cat in the Hat is Flat

I ordered this book for my daughter who is in 3rd grade. She is a struggling reader and it is hard to find books that she can read easily that actually hold her interest. She is also starting to get self-concious about how a book "looks" - wants it to be a "chapter book" but can't always read them. She loved this book and read it straight through the first night she got it. It took her about 40 minutes, which is twice as long as she normally reads, and she didn't stop every 5 minutes to ask me how much longer she had to read for! She told me she wants to read it again which is also something I have a hard time getting her to do and even asked me to order more of the series. Thank you Andy Griffiths!
