About the Author

Roger Priddy left school at 16 with just one qualification―in art. He went to Berkshire College of Art and Design and trained as an illustrator. His first job in children's books was working with the publisher Peter Usborne, at Usborne Publishing, and then he worked with Peter Kindersley at Dorling Kindersley, where he spent 16 years. Priddy became Creative Director of DK's Children's Division and was Managing Director of the children's mass market publisher Funfax when it was acquired by DK.

In 2000, he created Priddy Books with John Sargent at St Martin's Press to create innovative and imaginative titles for children, from first books for babies through early reference titles for older children. Since then, over 30 million copies of Roger's 200 plus books have sold worldwide, with five of his books―My Big Animal, My Big Truck, Happy Baby Words, Happy Baby Colors and Puppy and Friends―each selling over one million copies. Low Tack Stickers Are a Good Thing

I do agree with the other reviewers who pointed out that these stickers aren't all that sticky. However, I'm actually glad about that. The stickers *do* stick to paper and other surfaces--but not so much that you end up having to scrape them off the wall or furniture with a butter knife. That's a very good thing. Since I bought this for a 3-year old, I've ignored the activity aspect of the book and just let my son pick out stickers to put on his shirt or wherever. I don't mind it if he puts stickers on his headboard (which has become part of his evening ritual it seems) because they peel off easily. As for the stickers themselves, I love them! The book includes a great variety of stickers. I love that the images are photographs of different objects, animals, and people. We've had this book for several months, and there are still tons of stickers for my son to choose from. I'd definitely recommend this to parents who would love to give their preschoolers or toddlers a nice collection of stickers--but would rather not have adhesive residue all over their walls and furniture.

Good deal, infuriating layout

This is a great deal - 1000 stickers for about 6 bucks. And the stickers aren't too sticky, so your kid(s) can put them on the floor and furniture without any cleaning necessary or any adhesive sticking to them. And inside is a good matching game, which is sort of a learning tool, right?

The main issue with this book is that the layout is insane. Basically it goes like this: a few pages of silhouettes where the stickers are supposed to be matched, stickers, silhouettes, stickers, etc. But the silhouettes where the stickers are supposed to be matched could be before or after the stickers, so you spend most of your reading time hunting for the proper page. It's like the people that made the book never bothered to use it or think through the layout. Totally dumb, but I'm on my 3rd or 4th of these, so it's not that bad.

Great for crafts

I thought this would be like some of the other sticker books with activities that I had purchased but this one was disappointing. It was literally "take sticker 2 and place in spot 2." No other activities. Very boring. I gave it 3 stars because I was looking for a book of stickers for crafts. So I disassembled the book and now I have 1000 stickers of varying sizes and subjects for my kids. Which is what I was originally looking for when I set out for stickers.

The case rattles Burkholder, who left the Amish faith as a teenager after she was raped by an Amish man. Helping her through the stressful investigation is John Tomasetti, a big-city cop battling his own demons (his wife and young daughters were murdered a few years before). The two had a brief affair, but time has passed and both have hesitations about rekindling the romance. They have plenty to distract them as they search for a killer who may have more sinister acts in store. Though the plot fizzles a bit at the end, a unique setting and a very human heroine make this a good recommendation for readers seeking an alternative to the urban whodunit. --Allison Block

Pray For Silence and a good ending...

After reading all the positive reviews for this novel, I thought perhaps I had read a completely different book. I found this book stunningly repetitive -- the author constantly reminds the readers of the protagonist's Amish background, her mysterious emotional "connection" to the victim, strange relationship with her partner John -- OK, I got that the first twenty times, thank you. But the ending was stupefying and made me want to throw the book against a wall. I will not be a spoiler, but I will say that nothing, absolutely nothing, about the crime is cleared up, and the reader is left to wonder -- along with Detective Kate, who says "I guess we'll never know exactly what or why..." and is apparently OK with that -- how the suspects even know each other. After spending time and slogging through the repetition, being left with a complete bag of unanswered questions just pushed me over the literary edge, so to speak.

Decent Follow Up Novel

I loved Linda Castillo's "Sworn to Silence" and the way she introduced Police Cheif Kate Burkholder, so I couldn't wait to get my hands on the follow up novel "Pray for Silence".

The good news is that if you liked the first novel, you'll most likely enjoy this second offering too. All of the elements found in the first book make a return appearance, the sleepy little town of Painters Mill pops off the pages, and the population of that small town come alive with Castillo's writing. The dynamic between the Amish and the "English" is once again the backbone of this story, and once again the reader gets drawn into the fascinating world of Amish farm life. And once again, Cheif Burkholder must confront the demons of her past when trying to solve the brutal murder of an entire Amish family.

I really do like Linda Castillo's writing style, and the brutal crimes in "Pray for Silence" will make even the most avid genre reader flinch while reading. This is definately not a book for the squeamish as Castillo visits some pretty nasty corners of Painters Mill.

While I don't think "Pray for Silence" was as nailbiting as "Sworn..." it's still a great read, and Cheif Burkholder is one of the best new characters to hit crime fiction in years. If you haven't discovered this series...do yourself a favor and pick up both Burkholder books.

Why does Kate Burkholder still have a job?

In Ohio's Amish country, Chief of Police Kate Burkholder encounters the grisly murder of an entire Amish family. Her investigation is aided by sort-of-love-interest BCI agent John Tomasetti. Was Amish teenager Mary Plank living a double life, and did her secrets get her family killed? The discovery of the victim's diary might provide the answers. This novel's plot and unusual (though not fully accurate) setting held my interest, but repetitious prose and two over-emotional protagonists undermined a story I might have otherwise enjoyed.

The repetition became most irritating in regard to Kate's emotions. Over and over, she tells the reader that this case is "the kind of scene that affects even the most hard-nosed of cops" (p. 34), that "some crimes are simply too terrible for the eyes to behold" (p. 36), that she "can't imagine the horrors these girls must have endured" (p. 37). On and on the melodramatic inner monologue continues--throughout the entire book. Often, Kate expounds in full paragraphs that the horrible awfulness of working this crime is harder on her than anyone else, due to her past as a formerly Amish teenager and as a crime victim herself. By 100 pages into the book, I could hardly ask "whodunit" anymore, because I was asking other, more irritated questions: did the author think her readers would forget that Kate used to be Amish, even after reminding us (for the twentieth time) less than ten pages ago? Did the author think the best way to elicit my sympathy for her character was for Kate to *tell* me her angst instead of the author *showing* me? Did no one edit this book?

Still, let's say the book had been edited to about 75% of its current length. That wouldn't fix the two protagonists, who can't seem to behave objectively even at the risk of their case. First, we have Kate's overreaction to just about everything. A belligerent suspect calls her a dirty name, so she hits him with her nightstick. A suspect flees through a cornfield, so she chases him blindly and without backup. And what was she doing at the crime scene alone in the first place? She's had a long day, so she goes to the bar *in uniform* and gets "alcohol-fuzzed." Bait is required, so she sets herself up to be utterly alone when the suspect takes said bait. Not to mention she gets choked up and/or just breaks down crying often enough during the book that when she breaks down in the final scene, there's nothing left for the reader to feel.

Then there's Tomasetti. I wanted to feel for him, the Controlled Cop Brooding Over Dark Past. But come on. The guy's on mandatory leave pending psych evaluation for failing a drug test, yet he shows up in Kate's town to assist her investigation, because he "needs to work." Worse, he doesn't tell her at first that he's there unofficially. Worst, when Kate finds out, there's no confrontation. No, "What is wrong with you, my case could be completely screwed!" Nope. They keep working together. She "understands" his need to be in the field. Well, how nice, but every interview he's been on and every piece of evidence he's touched are inadmissible, so good luck stopping your bad guy. And of course, they also spend a night together, because nothing says "focused on the case" like sleeping with your colleague. Most annoyingly, none of these lapses in judgment have any consequences.

I won't be coming back for more from Linda Castillo. Her prose repeats itself like a first draft. Her characters' behavior and therefore her plot ignore realism in favor of drama. Ultimately, the only thing I felt while reading PRAY FOR SILENCE was frustration.

I bought this book for my nephew when he was seven months old and he liked more the other book with touch and feel pages. It is a very bright and colorful book, it has easy to turn pages and is very sturdy. The pictures are cute and it has the name of the animal in both English and Spanish.

Wonderful!

My 16 month old son loves this book! It is great for English and Spanish learners/speakers. The pictures are clear and easy to see. It's great for anyone to read to him as well, since it has both languages. It has also been said that kids learn to identify objects faster with real pictures than with drawings. I would highly recommend it.

Margret Snow quits her Ph.D. program in art to escape the romantic feelings she has toward her bird-watching partner (and Columbia University adviser), Charles Ashur. She whiles her time away as a window display designer at Saks and eventually works up the courage to confess her feelings, and they marry. Margret's memories shift between her and Charles's early bird-watching days and their marriage. But the most vivid parts of the novel are set in the gloomy present, when Margret, now a widow, throws herself in a new artistic direction that involves dead birds. Her connection to the dead sparrows and warblers seems more natural than the off-key relationships she has with the living, and her isolation from family and friends raises the question why she tries to keep the connections alive, while the grating banter between Margret and Charles only serves to caricaturize them. Evocative and Lovely

"The Bird Catcher" brings to mind both "The Tatoo Artist" and "The Incredible Lightness of Being", all three books managing to capture the poignance and elusiveness of life on this planet in all its forms. I found myself re-reading particularly beautiful passages several times. The metaphor of birds as souls, the wonderfully visual descriptions of the "bird catcher's" art, the sensory evocation of New York City's hidden pockets of wildness and unseen tragedies, the depiction of betrayals, losses and connections were all beautifully handled. I would definitely read this book again and, in fact, will add it to my library of "special books" bought for that purpose.

Repetitive pages

I agree with some reviewers... marker wipes off the pages easily, but stains do not come out of clothes. And I like that the pen is not attached with a string so that the child has freedom to move it around; and since it has a built-in penholder, it is easy to keep track of the pen. We also have the ABC's book, which my granddaughter loves! However, the activities in this book are the same for each "thing that goes". So, she got bored with it very quickly.

About the Author
Robert W. Strayer regularly teaches both halves of the world history course at California State University, Monterey Bay. Until his move to California in 2002, he taught courses in the history of the Soviet Union, Modern Africa, and world history for 32 years at the State University of New York College at Brockport. Strayer received the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching at SUNY Brockport in 1997 and a similar award for Excellence in Scholarship in 2002. In 1998, he was a Visiting Professor at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand. Dr. Strayer began academic life as an African historian, and wrote Kenya: Focus on Nationalism (1975) and The Making of Mission Communities in East Africa (1978). More recently he developed a specialty in Soviet history and wrote Why Did the Soviet Union Collapse?: Understanding Historical Change (1998) and The Communist Experiment: Revolution, Socialism, and Global Conflict in the Twentieth Century (2007) comparing the experience of the Soviet Union and China. He has also served as co-editor of the Explorations in World History series. Throughout his career, his primary intellectual focus has been world history, serving as a teacher, scholar, textbook author, consultant, and member of the Executive Committee of the World History Association.

Excellent Overview

"World History" is, by its own definition, a difficult if not impossible subject. But, Strayer manages to capture all of the major themes of this fascinating discipline and present them in a clear, concise format with well-chosen graphics and linguistic economy. It is a book specifically designed to be "student friendly," and that it most certainly is. It would be a superior choice as a textbook for an AP or Honors Level World History class from about grades 10-12, or an introductory lower level college course. It would not be suitable for general use, however, at lower class speeds or as a remedial text. Read carefully and aggressively, it should also give the diligent student more than adequate preparation for the AP examination if used in conjunction with a good, current study guide.

Highly recommended for the classroom levels described or for the busy history teacher who needs an excellent and quick up-to-date reference tool.

I went into AP World history this year. Within the first week our teacher gave us our first reading assignment. When I was reading (on the textbook issued by the school), I felt the urge to write and highlight key points and ideas, but I couldn't. I did a little bit of research and found this book on amazon for only $27. I bought it.
It has really helped me a lot in the class by having my own copy and being able to write in it.
Not only that, but the books they give us in school are the second edition. The major difference is that the second edition contains green pages with primary source documents. This textbook gives the secondary high school student a really good brief history of the world in a little over 750 pages. I really enjoyed this text and have used it as a quick reference point for events that have taken place throughout the history of the world.

Lovely book!

My daughter loves this book. We read it Every. Single. Night.
Lots to talk about. Thick sturdy board book pages however the flaps are made from fairly light weight card stock. The flaps are holding up pretty well but they do bend and I imagine we will lose a couple of them over the coming months! Highly recommend this book to any Hello Kitty fan.

My 17 month old daughter is obsessed with this book. She wants to read it before bedtime every night and has memorized where all the flaps are in each page and loves to lift each tab up to see what's underneath. Super cute illustrations, every Hello Kitty lover will love it!

It's okay

This book does have some nice pictures, but I don't like the way some of the animals are named, for example calf instead of cow, kitten instead of cat.... I think very young children find it easier to say cat, cow instead of kitten and calf. There were too many of these types of identifiying names. I'd stick with a book that has the basic names and work from there as my child gets older.

Great book from birth on!

I ordered several books when my son was just a few weeks old and this is his favorite book. I call it his "first book". It is great because every other page has a white background for the stark contrast needed for newborns, yet every OTHER page has a different color background. The book has great photos and color. Recommended for anyone looking for a good book to introduce to a newborn. I ended up buying several more books by Bright Baby....

X. J. KENNEDY is an acclaimed poet, children's writer, college teacher, and textbook author. He has taught freshman composition at the University of Michigan, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and Tufts University. Since 1966, more than two million students have treasured his introductory literature texts and The Bedford Guide for College Writers, Eighth Edition (2008), coauthored with Dorothy M. Kennedy and Marcia F. Muth.

DOROTHY M. KENNEDY is a writer and editor whose articles and reviews have appeared in both professional and academic journals. She has taught composition at the University of Michigan and Ohio University and, with X. J. Kennedy, is the recipient of the NCTE Teacher's Choice Award for Knock at a Star: A Child's Introduction to Poetry.

JANE E. AARON is a respected writer and editor who has taught composition at New York University and New School University. For Bedford/St. Martin's she is the author of The Compact Reader, Eighth Edition (2008), and 40 Model Essays: A Portable Anthology (2005).

A college instructor's perspective...

As an English instructor at a community college, this collection as a text for essay writing offers great appeal with its diversity in voices, cultures, topics, and points of view (though the explanation of POV needs greater scope). In addition to the writer's bio before each story, one of my favorite features is the writer's shared insights afterward about his or her story, writing process, personal background, or career development (students enjoy this feature, too); and, there are discussion questions with "Suggested Journaling ideas," and suggestions for rewriting "Journals into Essays," that help students who always ask "What do I write about?" Story length as reading assignments are manageable for time-crunched, back-to-schoolers with already-full plates--juggling jobs, kids, and classes--and little time for 400-page novels. It may not be my text of choice for teaching argument and research, but as an introduction, it works.

The Best I've Ever Seen

I was required to get this book for an Intermediate Composition course in college and it has to be the best college textbook I have ever had. First there is a wide variety of stories to choose from and at least one will appeal to everyone. Even though it is a educational textbook I still read it in my leisure time, as well.

My high school English class analyzes two essays from the book every grading period. I have seldom had an assignment that I enjoy so much; after analyzing the first essay assigned (Homeless), I sat back to think about what the writer had expressed. The essays are thought provoking and demand attention. The Bedford Reader is a book that I would recommend for the sheer enjoyment of exploring one's own mind and escaping to the world of another's.
