About the Author
Michael Meyer (Ph.D., University of Connecticut) has taught writing and literature courses for more than 30 years — since 1981 at the University of Connecticut and before that at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and the College of William and Mary. His scholarly articles have appeared in distinguished journals such as American Literature, Studies in the American Renaissance, and Virginia Quarterly Review. An internationally recognized authority on Henry David Thoreau, Meyer is a former president of the Thoreau Society and coauthor (with Walter Harding) of The New Thoreau Handbook, a standard reference source. His other books for Bedford/St. Martin's include The Bedford Introduction to Literature (2011); The Compact Bedford Introduction to Literature (2009); and Thinking and Writing about Literature (2001).

My New Favorite Textbook

Most of the textbooks I have read and perused on either literature or poetry are so boring as to lead one to wonder if the author(s) have learned anything about writing from the great works they espouse. This book is actually enjoyable to read, and I found myself almost saddened when I reached the end of the assigned reading for the day - I generally read ahead, just for fun. The bulk of the book is poetry, with no more commentary than a few thought questions at the end of each poem. I was very impressed by the restraint used in allowing the student to form their own close readings of the poems. The technical aspects of poetry are treated by showing interesting and perfectly suited examples - synecdoche, iamb, and the various forms are all treated in such a way that the student is actually encouraged and excited to find them in poems they read.
Overall, a wonderful introduction to poetry book, and, after the class is over, a wonderful anthology of important and beautiful poems.

Not What I Expected, But That's Okay! ;)

I have recently been reading Ibsen in the Michael Meyer translations and have been very much impressed. So I was really pleased when I found this poetry text by him on Amazon.
Except that it was by a different Michael Meyer. Amazon seems to be putting all the Michael Meyers together in their search function.
Oh well. It's a really wonderful book. I'm not in college, but I realized that I have never learned to appreciate poetry as much as I would like, although I am a big fan of epic poems. I ordered this book to help me to understand poetry better and this book really fills the bill.
So, although I ordered the wrong book, I got just what I wanted.

Wanted to buy book, not teacher guide

This is a review for the book "Poetry: An Introduction - Resources for Teaching." This is NOT the same as "Poetry: An Introduction," though they are both by the same author (Michael Meyer) and Amazon seems to think they are the same, since the spiralbound option is listed along with the paperback and hardback options, and the same customer reviews are listed under both books. This is misleading. After reading the reviews about it being a textbook containing a variety of poems, I placed my order and actually received something very different.
The teacher resource is just that -- intended for teachers who are using the textbook. It offers brief (1-4 paragraph) explanations of the poems included in the textbook, but does not actually contain any poetry. It also offers suggestions for writing assignments, related poems, and supplemental audiovisual materials. I imagine most of the poems can be found online, and to be honest the brief explanations of each poem can probably be found online as well (or something similar).
So, it really wasn't worth it to me to buy this, but hopefully my mistake will help someone else. Make sure you're actually making a purchase of the item you want -- whether it be textbook or teacher guide -- and don't go by the reviews.
