Kids love this! Bought used

Kids love this! Bought used, so the sound didn't work at all, but thats ok as it gets annoying real fast.

Cute book
By D. Rethman
My nephew (12mos) loves this book. He gets so excited by the music on the last page. The book has just enough text to keep the book moving, neat textures on the different dragons, and a really cute song when you open the last page.

The only thing that caught us a couple times was that the sensor on the last page is a light sensor, so if you think the battery is dead/dying, put the book near a light and it may be okay!

Fun book, a little fragile
By Raj
The book itself isn't fragile, but (spoiler alert!) the last page of each of the books in this collection light up and make noises. The baby LOVES it, but after just a few times reading the book, the hinge that signals the light and sound show starts to get flaky. It's also a little trippy when you accidentally leave the book open to the last page and it randomly starts making noises throughout the night.

Other than that fairly minor complaint, the books are fun and the kid loves 'em.

Chapter One

No beginning, no end

People ask me, “Why is this life so mysterious?” How am I supposed to know? It is so! It is simply a fact, I am not talkingabout theories. I’m not saying that it is my theory that life is mysterious— then you could ask why. It is simply so.The trees are green. You ask why. The trees are green because they are green. There is no question of why.

If you can ask why and the question can be answered, then life will not be a mystery. If the why can be answered, then life cannot be a mystery. Life is a mystery because no “why” is relevant.

I have heard:

Mulla Nasruddin was saying to one of his disciples that life is like a woman. I

was surprised, so I listened attentively to what he was saying.

He was saying, “The man who says he understands women is bragging. The man who thinks he understands them is gullible. The man who pretends to understand them is ambiguous. The man who wants to understand them is wistful. On the other hand, the man who does not say he understands them, does not think he understands them, does not pretend to understand them, does not even want to understand them—he understands them!”

And that’s how life is also. Life is a woman. Try to understand life and you will become a mess. Forget all about understanding. Just live it and you will understand it. The understanding is not going to be intellectual, theoretical; the understanding is going to be total. The understanding is not going to be verbal; it is going to be nonverbal. That is the meaning when we say life is a mystery. It can be lived but it cannot be solved.

You can know what it is, but you cannot say what it is. That is the meaning of mystery. When we say that life is a mystery, we are saying that life is not a problem. A problem can be solved. A mystery is that which cannot be solved. Insolubility is unbuilt. And it is good that life cannot be solved, otherwise what would you do then? Just think of it. If life is not a mystery and somebody comes and explains it to you— then what will you do? There will be nothing left except to commit suicide. Even that will look meaningless.

Life is a mystery; the more you know it, the more beautiful it is. A moment comes when suddenly you start living it, you start flowing with it. An orgasmic relationship evolves between you and life, but you cannot figure out what it is. That’s the beauty of it, that’s its infinite depth.

And, yes, there is no beginning and no end. How can there be any beginning to life and any end to life? Beginning will mean that something came out of nothing, and end will mean that something was there and went into nothing. That will be an even bigger mystery. When we say life has no beginning we simply say it has always been there. How can there be a beginning? Can you mark a line and say that at this moment life started, as Christian theologians used to say? Just four thousand years before Jesus Christ, they say, life started on a certain Monday. Of course, it must have been in the morning. But how can you call it Monday if there was no Sunday before it? And how can you call it morning if there was no night before it? Just think of it.

No, you cannot make a mark— that is foolish. It is not possible to mark a line because even to mark a line something is needed.

Something is needed to precede it, otherwise demarcation is not possible. You can mark a line if there are two things, but if there is only one thing how can you mark a line? The fence around your house is possible because there is a neighbor. If there is no neighbor, nothing beyond your fence, the fence cannot exist. Just think of it. If there is absolutely nothing beyond your fence, your fence will fall down into nothing. How can it exist? Something is needed beyond the fence to hold it.

If on a certain Monday life started, a Sunday is needed to precede it. Otherwise the Monday will fall, topple down and disappear. And in the same way there is no possibility of any end. Life is, life simply is. It has been, it will be. It is eternity.

And don’t start thinking about it. Otherwise you will be missing it, because all the time that you waste in thinking about it is simply waste. Use that time, use that space, use that energy to live it.

Amazing
By Sandra B. G.
I'm still reading this book - slowly. I should be reading this each night since I love this book. This is the first book by Osho that I have started to read. I guess the concepts in the book are a little hard for westerners to grasp (I can only really speak for myself) and may be that is why I don't read this every night.

The most that I remember of what I have read so far is that there is no self, no "doer" of anything and there is no "I". And the other part that I remember is to start living your life and you are "it". If you are new to eastern philosophy, you can read this book slowly. What I like about this book is how it makes me feel. It makes me feel wonderful - like I matter. But the message is conveyed in a way that may be strange for the person in the western world. So, if you are new to this, read a page a day.

I will for sure update my review once I am done with this book.

Osho is the greatest
By Lidija
This book is wonderful - as every as I bought considering his speaches! If you are a true seeker of meaning of life, of purpose of our lives, if there is something in you that is throbbing and you can not figure it out what it is - Osho is the right address to find it. He (through books, speaches) helped me totally. One of the greatest, actually the greatest man of our time, in my oppinion!

I am going to quote Osho (this quotation is not from this book - I forgot where I took it from - but it is important: " First go deeper into your sea so you achieve calm crystallization, so you achieve the point where no disturbance ever reaches. Stand there. From there every change comes, every transformation comes. Once you are there you have become a master. Now whatsoever is unnecessary can be dropped, and can be dropped without any struggle and fight!"

Osho will help you to find yourself - which is the only task in everybodys life.

There are few quoatition from this book, which are very, very important:

page 67: "Birth happens, death happens - they are beyond you; you cannot do anything about them. Life has already happened. Death is going to happen. Between birth and death there is only one thing you can do something about, and that is LOVE. And because it depends on you, there is every possibility that you may miss it. That is the agony of love: you can miss it. If you dont do something, if you dont become alert, if you dont move towards it consciously, deliberately, you may miss it. There is every possibility that you may not unfold it - hence the fear, the trembling, the anguish, the anxiety: Will i be able to make it? Will I be able to move into love? Will I be able to floww into love?.....

page 66: "This love is waiting in you. There is no necessity; it can wait and you can die...."

page 73: "Unless you have known what love is, you have not known what melody is. It is the meeting, orgasmic meeting of death an life. Unless love is known, you have missed. You were born, you lived and you died - but you missed. You missed trumendeously...- you missed the interval in between. This interval is the highest pinnacle, the peak experience. To attain it, there are four steps to be remembered. The first step: be herenow - because love is possible only in the herenow......."......

Roger Priddy's love for children's early learning has led him to create some of publishing's most successful children's non-fiction books, including Priddy Books' million-copy bestsellers, My Big Animal Book, My Big Truck Book and Happy Baby Words.

Roger says:

"It is always rewarding to see a child enjoying and learning something from one of our books, especially babies, when you think it could be the first book they have ever seen.

"I am very lucky to have a career where you get to think up fun ways to teach a kid how to write their letters and learn their first words, whilst finding out about Dinosaurs at the same time!"

Roger lives with his wife, Zena, in London and Cork, Ireland. They have four children, who have given him most of his best ideas for his books.

Should have listened to other reviewers! Sounds worked when I first tried. Next time we picked up the book, a couple of days later, they did not. Tried new batteries - still didn't work! They should stop selling these. Apparently there's a major flaw in the mechanism.

My son loves this book!
By Jacqui Herrmann
I've been on a mission to find a book that meets the following criteria for my 9 month old son:
- Must be a board book (because he chews everything!)
- Mustn't be too long (32 pages maximum because we're dealing with a short attention span here)
- Mustn't be too big (so my son can easily pick up and play with the book)
- Must contain photographs of familiar objects and other babies (because all of his other books only have illustrated pictures of animals for some reason!)

"Happy Baby: Words" fit all of the above criteria perfectly and my son loves it to death. He can actually turn the pages himself and he gets so excited seeing all the baby photographs inside.

Great book!

Great baby book!
By C. Hooker
This is the second copy I have bought of this great book. My first one was bought for my first grandchild. She loved it! She learned to identify her eyes, nose, etc., by looking at the photographs in this book. I think it's the photographs (instead of drawings) that make it so good. I bought my second copy for my third grandchild. I like the fact that this edition is larger than the fist. I definitely recommend this book!

A Twisted Faith: A Minister's Obsession and the Murder That Destroyed a Church, by Gregg Olsen

New York Times bestselling author Gregg Olsen investigates the sensational story of a minister who seduced four of his female congregants, and hatched a cold-blooded plot to murder his wife.

On December 26, 1997, near the affluent community of Bainbridge Island off the coast of Seattle, a house went up in flames. In it was the shy, beloved minister's wife Dawn Hacheney. When the fire was extinguished, investigators found only her charred remains. Her husband Nick was visibly devastated by the loss. What investigators failed to note, however, was that Dawn's lungs didn't contain smoke. Was she dead before the fire began?

So begins this true crime story that's unlike any other. It investigates Nick Hacheney, a philandering minister who had been carrying on with several women in the months before and just after his wife's death. He would be convicted for the murder five years to the day after the crime.

From one of the foremost names in true crime, Twisted Faith is a gripping and truly unforgettable story of a man whose charisma and desire rocked an entire community.

As seen on NBC's Dateline

His sin was adultery.

He counseled young couples at a small church in Bainbridge Island, Washington―and convinced young women that having sex with him was part of God's plan. But that wasn't the worst of Youth Pastor Nick Hacheney's unspeakable sins. The tragic house fire that ultimately consumed the life of his soft-spoken wife was no act of God…

His crime was murder.

What demons drove a highly respected minister to commit the most sinful of crimes? How did five women―including Hacheney's own mother-in-law―fall prey to his seductions? Combining firsthand confessions, erotically charged emails, and one woman's chilling prophecies, bestselling author Gregg Olsen paints a shocking portrait of a church, a community, and a man of the cloth who turned out to be a wolf in sheep's clothing…

Gregg Olsen's books are:

"Searing and brilliant."―Ann Rule

"Riveting and deeply disturbing…Olsen does a superior job."―Cleveland Plain Dealer

A chilling, cautionary tale...
By M. Jowell
I found Gregg's latest book, the third of his I've read, to be a chilling cautionary tale that I couldn't put down. It's the telling of an unspeakable crime that sent shockwaves out in so many directions, affecting so many people. This story is a reminder of how insidious some forms of abuse can be...coming from directions one might not expect...the consequences of which are tragic for EVERYONE involved.

Set close to home, I find that many of the places mentioned in Gregg's book are very familair to me, adding much personal interest. I recall reading the headlines, and wondering then, just as I do now, how this could have happened. As the story unfolds however, the author provides an in-depth look that the news media could not, providng me with some new perspective. I found A TWISTED FAITH to be a fast read...but this is not to say an easy read. It's a complex story, that by necessity introduces the reader to several individuals.

Gregg reveals some extremely personal details from the lives of those involved, but appears to do so without malice or moralizing. While the facts of the case resulted in a conviction, the reader is still left with much to think about...

Power can corrupt and destroy both those who have it and those who follow...
By Thomas Duff
I am always confused and dismayed when people who hold positions of authority in a church or religious organization abuse that power for their own gain. I'm even more dismayed when people who follow them end up following the person instead of their faith, letting charisma and personality overrule what they *know* to be right and wrong. Gregg Olsen portrays one of those situations in his real-life crime drama A Twisted Faith: A Minister's Obsession and the Murder That Destroyed a Church. Twisted Faith shows what happens when no one confronts evil or is willing to think for themselves and take action.

The book centers around a death that occurred in Bremerton Washington in 1997, the day after Christmas. Dawn Hacheney, the wife of youth pastor Nick Hacheney, dies in a house fire that took her life in the early morning hours as she slept. At least that's what it appears to be, and for quite some time, that's the story that all the officials signed off on. But the reality of her death is far different. Olsen documents how Christ Community Church, a Pentecostal church on Bainbridge Island, went from a small community gathering in the mid-90s to a church embroiled in power struggles, sex scandals, and ultimately the murder of one of their own. Olsen pieces together the story from interviews, news stories, and other sources, and shows how the abuse of power can destroy both the person who has it and those who follow.

There were so many emotions going through my head during this book. I was dismayed that a group of leaders could abuse biblical teachings so blatantly and repeatedly. I was also amazed that so many people can look the other way when everything they see tells them that something is very wrong and needs to be addressed. Letting a person become the focus of your faith instead of God is a sure recipe for disaster. A Twisted Faith is primarily a crime novel (and a good one), but it can also be a wake-up call to check your focus when it comes to your faith, and to make sure you're basing your beliefs on the correct foundation.

A book about a promiscuous sleazy minister, not a crime novel
By Sue
This is a book about a horribly dysfunctional church congregation, and in particular their minister who has multiple extra-marital affairs (3 women and one teenager, all at about the same time). Of course, one of the women is the church secretary. Part of the first chapter describes the crime (he murders his wife and sets his house on fire to destroy the evidence - the dead body). The last chapter offers a few pages on the investigation and trial. In between this we have a detailed account of how the murdering man-of-God is basically sexually obsessed and hides this behind his nonsensical interpretations of the Bible. How his congregation could not immediately see through this guy is beyond amazing; also the long time senior pastor is ousted by another sort of narcisstic new comer pastor. (The senior pastor's daughter is the teen that the minister has extra-marital sex with). This book is basically a soap opera of a really weird church congregation, and their really weird pastoral staff. It is like a bad reality tv show, but in print.

a
s she sped down the ramp like a track star, Chloe prayed
she hadn’t missed it. On the way to the ferry, she’d felt like
the bus driver was going extra slow on purpose. The bus had
finally pulled into the St. George terminal at 7:39 a.m., giving
her exactly one minute to catch it. Not even—because if the guy
whose job it was to close the doors wanted to be an asshole that
day, he’d close them faster on purpose. Then all anyone could
do in their frustration was curse and stare at him through the
glass partition. Chloe hated that guy, and had always wished
that one day someone would wait until he opened the doors for
the next ferry and then punch him dead in his face.
She ran as fast as she could this morning. If she missed this one, the next boat wouldn’t come for another twenty minutes, and she had no patience to wait around that long. Just as she entered the terminal, she could see the doors slowly closing. She ran faster and slipped between them just in the nick of time. She looked victoriously at the son of a bitch pressing the button. Bastard!
She boarded the Staten Island Ferry and swore for the thousandth time that she was going to start waking up earlier so that she wouldn’t have to run like a wide receiver anymore. Winded—and annoyed that her morning was off to such a bad start—Chloe plopped down in an empty seat and tried to catch her breath. She put her bag on the floor in front of her and sucked her teeth. As usual, she hadn’t had time to pick up a copy of the New York Daily News, and now there was nothing to read during her ride to Lower Manhattan.
It was Monday morning, and Chloe hated Mondays! She preferred to take her time, sleep late, and get her day started at her own pace. Mondays meant she had to get up on time, catch the bus on time, be at the ferry on time. She had never cared much about being on time for things. It wasn’t that she didn’t respect other people’s schedules. She just wasn’t a morning person. And the earlier she had to be someplace, the more likely it was that she’d be late.
Still struggling to regain her breath, she looked around. She noticed a guy sitting across from her, with a smirk on his face. Wondering what the hell he found so funny, for a brief moment she had an attitude. But then she noticed how handsome he was.
He was honey-hued with a neat mustache and goatee and a low-cut Caesar. He reminded her somewhat of the rapper T.I., with his laid-back style and neat, well- groomed appearance. He looked older than she was, and he was fine. But she still wondered what the hell was so funny.
“Tough morning?” he asked, still smirking.
She looked at him. Suddenly her week wasn’t off to such a bad start after all. She glanced down at his feet—since footwear mattered to her when meeting a guy for the first time. This one wore a pair of crisp black Nikes, blue jeans, and a Coogi polo shirt. Chloe liked what she saw, so she smiled back.
“Yeah,” she said. She shook her head and sighed. “I’m always late for this boat.”
“So you should be used to running by now, then,” he said. “You seem a little out of breath.”
She thought his lips were perfect. He had nice eyes. She noticed that he was using them to size her up as well. He looked her up and down.
“I just hate it when I don’t get the chance to pick up the newspaper before I get on,” she said. “This ride is not the same without my Daily News.” He had no cuts on his face, but he still looked as if he’d lived a lot. Like he’d seen a lot of things. Chloe was intrigued by the sexy stranger, and she absentmindedly toyed with her charm bracelet.
He nodded. “I got the Post if you want to read it.” He offered his newspaper to her, but Chloe shook her head, frowning.
“I hate the Post,” she said. “But thanks, anyway.”
They looked at each other for a few quiet seconds before Chloe glanced around to see if anyone had discarded a copy of the Daily News nearby.
Often passengers left their newspapers on empty seats after they’d finished reading them. Normally, Chloe turned her nose up even at the thought of touching a “used” paper. She’d seen many a passenger pick their nose as if digging for gold, then turn the pages of their newspapers, leaving booger residue behind. The idea of coming into contact with anyone else’s boogers repulsed Chloe to no end.
But sitting across from this cutie, she suddenly needed something to do with her hands. He made her feel a little shy, for some reason. And without something to distract her, she knew that the twenty-fi ve-minute ride to Manhattan would feel like an eternity. There were no discarded copies of her preferred paper, so she resigned herself to enduring an awkward boat ride.
The handsome stranger shrugged and set his newspaper down beside him. He extended his hand to her. “My name is Trey,” he said.
Chloe thought his voice was so sexy. “Chloe,” she said, shaking his hand. “I’ve never seen you on this boat before.” Trey had a face Chloe would have remembered seeing.
He thought she was pretty as well. Chloe was a coffee-complexioned girl with shoulder-length hair and big brown eyes. When she smiled, her deep dimples were clearly visible, and her lips were full and sexy. Her nails were well manicured, and her makeup was light. She was a stunner, and her skintight jeans didn’t hurt either. She had Trey’s undivided attention. He looked at the knapsack at her feet.
“You go to school?” he asked, hoping that she was a college student and not a high schooler.
She nodded. “Yeah. Medgar Evers College.”
He breathed a sigh of relief that she was indeed of age. “What are you taking?”
“Journalism.” She looked at his casual clothes and wondered how old this guy was. “How about you?” she asked.
Trey hesitated for a moment and said, “I’m a student like you.”
“Yeah, right. You look like you’re about twenty-fi ve. You’re still in college?”
He smiled. “First of all, thanks for the compliment, ’cause I’m about to turn twenty-eight. And, yeah, I’m in school. After high school, I made a detour, so it took me a minute to get back on track. Now I go to BMCC.”
Borough of Manhattan Community College, aka BMCC, was located in Downtown Manhattan. Chloe had considered going there when she graduated high school, but opted instead for Medgar Evers, in the heart of Brooklyn. “What’s your major?” she asked, even more intrigued than before.
Trey cleared his throat. “I’m taking up psychology.”
Now it was Chloe who smirked. “Wow. That sounds exciting,” she said sarcastically. “You want to spend your life analyzing a bunch of psychos?”
He shrugged, picked up his newspaper again. “I find it interesting getting inside people’s minds and trying to understand them.” He looked away for a moment, watching a bum nearby rummaging through a garbage can. Then he turned back to Chloe. “I work for transit, too,” he said. “I’m a track worker, but I work nights. I take my classes in the daytime.”
Chloe was impressed. Trey was pursuing a degree and had a good job. She couldn’t believe her luck! The guys her age weren’t this focused. They were either hustling—which Chloe found ridiculous in this day and age—or working some menial job, trying to make ends meet. This handsome stranger seemed like he was different from the lames she was accustomed to. Chloe herself still lived at home with her mother and younger sister. She didn’t want to work, didn’t want to pay bills. She fi gured it was easier to live at home while she took her time getting her life in order. She was twenty years old, and she loved having the freedom to come and go as she pleased. But she didn’t want all the responsibilities that went along with adulthood, and for that reason, she still lived in her mother’s house.
“You have any kids?” she asked. A guy this fi ne—with all that he had going on—must have a crazy baby mama, she assumed.
“Nah, no kids. No girlfriend. None of that.”
“You live out here?” she asked, wondering how a guy this perfect had evaded her for so long on Staten Island.
He nodded. “Yeah, I just moved here, though. I’m from the Bronx originally. I’ve only lived out here for like a year. I live over on St. Marks.”
She smiled. St. Marks was just a few blocks from her home. This was all too good to be true. “Really? So, we’re practically neighbors. I live on Jersey Street. But in the houses, not in the projects!” She crossed her legs.
Trey frowned a little at Chloe’s disdain when she’d clarifi ed that she didn’t live in the projects. “Well, I grew up in the projects in the Bronx all my life, sweetheart,” he said. “So it wouldn’t matter to me if you lived in the projects or not. I’m not like that.”
Damn! Chloe wished she could eat her words. She hadn’t meant for her statement to sound so demeaning.
“I wasn’t saying it like that,” Chloe backpedaled. “Not at all.”
It wasn’t that she was stuck up. Chloe and her sister, Willow, were the product of a single-parent household. Their mother had raised them on her own after their fathers—Chloe’s a deadbeat from the get-go, and Willow’s a guy who supported her fi nancially but was never around—took off. Rachel Webster constantly reminded her daughters that even though they lived in the hood, they didn&rs...

`You keep playing with fire...you just might get burnt...'
By Urban Reviews
Tracy Brown's "Flirting With Disaster" introduces Chloe Webster, a 20-year-old college student that crosses paths with an unassuming Trey Gilmore. Chloe's plans for a successful life is on track...she has a few male playmates on the side and now a new boy toy Trey fits the description of a 'keeper.' "Flirting With Disaster" presents a façade of innocence yet ends with an unpredictable and shocking revelation. Ms. Brown presented a well written tale with an air of mystique that captures your attention as you see the plot developing with suspense and danger.

K'wan's "Wild Cherry" revolves around childhood friends Gina and Princess and their unexpected reunion. Both ladies have lovers that are abusive and are in less than desirable relationships. Upon witnessing Slim's brutality and mistreatment of Gina, the two instigate a scheme to rid them of the leeches that share their beds. "Wild Cherry" is an exemplary short story with vivid scenes that address abuse, low self esteem, vengeance, violence, and malevolent acts.

In "Twice In A Lifetime" by Angel Mitchell, Marley Lucas is a young bi-racial lady that is running from heartbreak. Marley has a master plan in place...to fit in and deny love a second chance at searing her heart. In her quest to avoid the inevitable, she trips and falls for the ever popular DeJuan. Amid their blossoming romance, her unknown heritage surfaces to destroy her not only once but twice in a lifetime. "Twice In A Lifetime" is an original storyline by Angel Mitchell.

(RAW Rating: 4.5) - Love Hurts
By The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers
Authors Tracy Brown, K'wan Foye and Angel Mitchell come together in FLIRT with three tales of love gone wrong.

Tracy Brown's "Flirting with Disaster" chronicles 20-year-old Chloe as she navigates the dating scene. Armed with good looks and high self esteem, Chloe refuses to fall victim to guys who just want to get in her pants. When she meets Trey, she thinks she's found a man who respects her enough to wait and who doesn't mind spending money on her. But all that glitters isn't gold and Trey may be way more than Chloe can handle.

K'wan's story "Wild Cherry" centers around Gina and Princess, two women who are both in love with abusive men. Former childhood friends, the two meet as adults and decide they could each get rid of the other's abusive mate. Their scheme is as a dangerous as it is deadly and neither girl may be able to live with the consequences of their actions.

Angel Mitchell spins the last and most disturbing tale with "Twice In A Lifetime". Marley is a young lady who refuses to give into love after a traumatic experience with her first love, DeJuan. When Marley finally decides to give love one last try, she finds herself caught up in a eerie case of déjà vu.

Readers, who've enjoyed previous books by the aforementioned authors, will definitely be in for a treat. Tracy Brown fans will find that less is not really more and might feel shortchanged by a short story that ends way too soon. Fans of K'wan's gritty style will be impressed at the steaminess he displays as well as his story's shocking conclusion. While Angel Mitchell, who's previous book displayed tons of drama, has revealed a much darker side.

Just Okay

I'm not a big fan of short stories, I purchase this book because it contained two of my favorite authors, Tracy Brown and K'WAN. I won't go into detail of each story the previous reviewers already covered that, I have to say "Wild Cherry" was the best story.

Good history book for summer class
By Dolly
This book was a required reading in a short summer history class. The book reads well and is relatively easy to get through. The chapters are organized into sections based on events, so there were some time jumps that I found confusing, but other than that this was one of the best class books I've had.

Good history - close research
By J. Medrzycki
This book fulfills the requirements of American History. Although I have never read the first or second edition of this book I have read four American History books and none of them cover so wide a topic in so much detail with so little space. Just under a thousand pages this turns out to be an extended American history with great emphasis on Americas stance as a world power. These authors are completely unbiased of any political undertones and follow Americas path from conception to the trade centers. The latter part of the book does a fabulous job painting a picture of Americas place in the world and the interconnection of globalization that lies heavily on Americas shoulders. The 21st century is described in emphasis and takes a good part of the book - things like north/south conflict and the prohibition era are also discussed intensively and fairly.

Phoenix Rising, by Karen Hesse

Nyle's life with her grandmother on their Vermont sheep farm advances rhythmically through the seasons until the night of the accident at the Cookshire nuclear power plant. Without warning, Nyle's modest world fills with protective masks, evacuations, contaminated food, disruptions, and mistrust.

Nyle adjusts to the changes. As long as the fallout continues blowing to the East, Nyle, Gran, and the farm can go on. But into this uncertain haven stumble Ezra Trent and his mother, "refugees" from the heart of the accident, who take temporary shelter in the back bedroom of Nyle's house.

The back bedroom is the dying room: It took her mother when Nyle was six; it stole away her grandfather just two years ago. Now Ezra is back there and Nyle doesn't want to open her heart to him. Too many times she's let people in, only to have them desert her.

Karen Hesse's voice and vision are grounded in truth; she takes on a nearly unharnessable subject, contains it, and makes it resonate with honesty. Part love story, part coming of age, Phoenix Rising is a tour de force by a gifted writer.

Review

“Hesse transcends the specific to illuminate universal questions of responsibility, care, and love. . . . Hesse portrays her characters' anguish and their growing tenderness with such unwavering clarity and grace that she sustains the tension of her lyrical, understated narrative right to her stunning, beautifully wrought conclusion.” ―Kirkus Reviews, Pointer

“The characters overcome adversity, not through heroic deeds of epic proportions, but through simple acts of kindness. The message is poignant, but not overpowering. Hesse has displayed considerable skill in creating a contemporary tale of hope and love rising, like a phoenix, from destruction and despair.” ―School Library Journal, Starred Review

“The author's understated approach heightens the emotional impact of her searching and memorable tale.” ―Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

“Hesse in Phoenix Rising deals with the effects of a leak at a nuclear plant, a young girl's awakening sexuality, the meaning of friendship, the strength of family ties, and the courage to love--and she does this with a grace and power that could make her novel ‘a favorite' with younger teens.” ―Voice of Youth Advocates

About the Author

Karen Hesse is the author of many books for young people, including Out of the Dust, winner of the Newbery Medal, Letters from Rifka, Brooklyn Bridge, Sable and Lavender. She has received honors including the Scott O'Dell Historical Fiction Award, the Christopher Award, and the MacArthur Fellowship "Genius" Award, making her only the second children's book author to receive this prestigious grant. Born in Baltimore, Hesse graduated from the University of Maryland. She and her husband Randy live in Vermont.

From School Library Journal
Grade 6-9-A Vermont sheep farm seems an unlikely place to worry about radiation and its effects. However, Nyle Sumner, 13, and her grandmother are completely surrounded by the grotesque results of an accident at a nuclear-power plant. Because of the accident, Nyle's cousin Bethany has radiation poisoning. Then Gran does the unthinkable: she takes in two fugitives who were exposed to the worst of the radiation, Miriam Trent and her son, Ezra, who is also sick with the poisoning. They stay in the back bedroom, the room marked by the death of Nyle's mother and grandfather. Now it seems likely that it will be the place that Ezra dies too. The bleak setting of this book serves as a backdrop for the sensitive interaction among the main characters. Gran quietly acts on her principles, Nyle overcomes her own feelings to help Ezra, and her best friend, Muncie, forgives past wrongs for the sake of friendship. The characters overcome adversity, not through heroic deeds of epic proportions, but through simple acts of kindness. The message is poignant, but not overpowering. Hesse has displayed considerable skill in creating a contemporary tale of hope and love rising, like a phoenix, from destruction and despair.

A Great Book
By A Customer
Phoenix Rising is the tale of thirteen year-old Nyle. Nyle lives with her Grandmother. After a nuclear power plant exploded in Massachussetts the radiation in the air causes damage to almost every buissness and farm in the VT,MA area. Nyle and her Grandmother take in two people who had no where to stay after the accident and learn to care for them.

Phoenix Rising is a great book. I live in southern Vermont and I know many people who go to school where Nyle does in the story {Leland and Grey}. Since I live in a tourist town an explosion like the one in this book would greatly effect my town.

Buy this book!!! and if you like it buy these to~ After the War-Carol Matas~Coffin Quilt-Ann Rinaldi and Johanna Hurwitz books{if your under twelve}

Erin's Book Review
By A Customer
In school we read a brilliant book as a group, Phoenix Rising (by Karen Hesse). If you are looking for something interesting to read, Phoenix Rising is a good book for pretty much anyone. It is a book on the subject of problems, regarding loss.

The history of the family is very unfortunate. Just before the book started there was a radioactive explosion at a nuclear power plant. The main character, Nyle and her grandma live on a farm near Cookshire, Vermont. Nyle's dad left when she was very young. Her father left Nyle with her grandparents when her mother was very sick because he did not want to see Nyle's mother die. Her mother died years before the explosion as well as her grandfather; they both died in the back bedroom. Nyle saw it as the dying room. Then Ezra and his mother, two evacuees, came to stay in the back bedroom.

The events of the story are very dramatic. There was a radioactive explosion. Suddenly there were protective masks, contaminated food and evacuations. I think it would make it very hard to try to live a peaceful life again after something like that.

The main troubles the family had were: One, Nyle was afraid to care or love anyone again. Two, sometime Nyle will have to face telling her best friend, Muncie about Ezra. Muncie and her family live on Nyle's grandmother's property. She was afraid if she told Muncie about Ezra staying with her, Muncie would freak out and move off their property, and then Nyle would not have a friend. Three, it is hard to deal with everything, and it is hard to face the truth that anything could happen to Ezra.

The thoughts and opinions I had for this book were focused on the author and the book as it unraveled. When I first read the book it seemed stupid. I wanted to tell my teacher it was a lousy book and the worst book that was ever written, but I read it anyway. I kept reading and it was the one of the greatest books I ever read. That was because I could relate - I have lost people in my life. But, the only question I had for Karen Hesse was, "What was her point? What was the moral of the book? What was she trying to tell us?" I don't have an answer, but I know there was a point and everyone sees it from a different point of view. And this book made me feel that I am not the only one that has lost important people.

Even though it was a story, people can still relate to it. I thought the beginning was slow to start, but once I got into it I wanted to read more. I saw Nyle as the main character and as the Phoenix. Ezra could have been the Phoenix because he helped Nyle change how she felt about people. I think people should recognize that if you don't like a book you could abandon it or keep reading because you should never read a book you dislike.

Nyle reminded me of myself because it is difficult for me to change like her. I can't seem to come to a conclusion. But my loss helped me understand feelings that the characters had. I would definitely recommend this book. I would recommend this book to children around 10 and 12, as well as people just looking for an interesting book.

Aww yeah.
By Nyle haha
This was the best book I have ever read. I know that's really all I need to say, but I'm going to tell you a little about it too.

A girl named Nyle Sumner lives with her 'Gran' on a sheep farm in Vermont. A nuclear power plant in Cookshire, Massechusetts (? I'm guessing it's MA) exploded, causing radiation to leak out and affect cities miles away. Nyle's grandmother decides to take in evacuees from the accident, Miriam and her son Ezra. She doesn't want to be friends with Ezra at first, but she eventually does...other characters include...a midget, Nyle's best friend, named Muncie Harris. Who is super cool. So anyways, I hope you enjoy/enjoyed this book even half as much as I did. (: Email me if you want to talk about it, I obviously have no life.
