Agatha Raisin hasn't quite adjusted to the slow pace of village life, or to the failure of her overtures to her handsome neighbor, James Lacey. Since the new vet in town is young and good looking, Agatha's perfectly healthy tabby endures a nasty physical exam in the name of romance. Unfortunately, his sacrifice is all for naught when the vet is soon found dead. The police call the death a freak accident, but Agatha convinces James that playing amateur detective might be fun. Unfortunately, just as curiosity killed the cat, Agatha's inept snooping is soon a motivation for murder. . . .

About the Author
M. C. Beaton has been hailed as "the new Queen of Crime." She is The New York Times bestselling author of the Agatha Raisin mysteries, including As the Pig Turns and Busy Body, set in the English Cotswolds, as well as the Hamish Macbeth mysteries set in Scotland. She has also written historical romance novels and an Edwardian mystery series under the name Marion Chesney. Super Great, Like All Agatha Raisin Mysteries

I have become addicted to M.C. Beaton's Agatha Raisin mysteries. I started in the middle of the series (I hear there's 25!) and wanted to know how Agatha started out, so I got this book. I'm actually re-reading it. I'm now going to read the books sequentially--not that one has to, but I enjoy them more that way. What can I say: I love Agatha, even though she can be irritating and irrational at times, yet she is so endearing. You can't help but feel for her and all her insecurities. Though at times she is down in the dumps, hope springs internal in her. Now, the two stories have great action and plots. But what makes them great stories--and what makes all the Agatha Raisin mysteries great--are the relationships between the characters. Meaning, how the characters interact and feel toward each other. I love Agatha Raisin, and I love this book!
