From Publishers Weekly
Portland, Maine, Det. Sgt. Michael McCabe, introduced in The Cutting, has to deal with a frozen corpse, a missing witness, and a sadistic killer in Hayman's satisfying second novel of suspense. One winter day, a cop finds the naked body of Lainie Goff, a beautiful and ambitious young lawyer in Portland's largest law firm, stuffed into the trunk of her BMW convertible at the end of a fishing pier. Lainie's past, present, and what might have been her future all hold possible clues: she was an abused child; she worked with abused teen girls at Sanctuary House; and she had plans for making partner at Palmer Milliken. A possible witness is Abby Quinn, a schizophrenic teen who hears voices and has disappeared. The police need to find Abby before the cold weather or the killer gets her. McCabe, with an eidetic memory and a passion for avenging victims, is a formidable detective tested to the limit in Hayman's atmospheric puzzler.

From Booklist
Finding the frozen, nude body of lawyer Lainie Goff in the trunk of her new Mercedes is a particular shock for Detective Sergeant Mike McCabe, because the corpse is a dead ringer for his remarried ex-wife, Sandy, with whom he still has a love-hate (mostly hate) relationship. So he has personal issues to deal with while he and partner Maggie Savage probe into the victim's past and search for the only witness to the crime, schizophrenic Abby Quinn. The bitter cold of a Portland, Maine, winter complicates the case, both in delaying forensic work on the body and in endangering some of the principals, especially Quinn, who's on the run. McCabe is a stickler for getting after the truth, whether examining his own emotions or closing cases. His second outing (after The Cutting, 2009) features a strong sense of place (the action seesaws between the mainland and nearby Harts Island), well-rounded characters, and a twisting, action-filled plot. This one puts Portland, Maine, firmly on the crime-fiction map. --Michele Leber

“An engrossing whodunit with a tenacious investigator… Highly recommended for readers of suspenseful, captivating mysteries with a cast of colorful yet believable characters.” —Library Journal (starred review)

“[THE CUTTING] was excellent, but this book is even better.… This may be Hayman's second novel, but he writes like a veteran mystery writer. His stories are gritty, suspenseful and colorful, and display tightly wrapped plots and wholly believable characters…. Hayman has produced a terrific tale that will be hard to put down.” —Kennebec Journal

Captivating detective again hunts a Maine killer

By LLOYD FERRISS

Readers of James Hayman’s second mystery novel are in for a treat.

He delivers a cast of tantalizingly complex characters. The setting of his book – Portland and its environs – is so accurately described that you practically see detective Michael McCabe driving familiar snow-covered streets in a city threatened by a psychopath.

McCabe, a fictional ace detective of the Portland Police department, is the hero of Hayman’s first novel, “The Cutting” (2009). He returns in the aptly named “The Chill of Night.”

McCabe’s a dynamo of focused energy, so intent on finding the slayer of young attorney Lainie Goff that his own girlfriend, Kyra, moves out of their shared apartment to escape his single-track involvement in the case.

A former New York detective, McCabe is blessed with a photographic mind. If he’s handed a slip of paper with a phone number, he glances at it once, then tosses the paper away. The number is stored in his brain forever. McCabe can memorize the contents of a room in a flash, or absorb the content of a letter left on a suspect’s desk.

But McCabe has his problems. He has a love-hate relationship with his ex-wife. He’s proud of his girlfriend, a Yale educated, up-and-coming Portland artist, yet daunted by her cultured upbringing.

The detective teeters on the edge of alcoholism, but is kept on track by his police partner, the memorable Maggie Savage.

Hayman’s mystery opens on a bitterly cold afternoon a couple of days before Christmas. Attorney Goff waits alone in the downtown high-rise that houses the prestigious law firm where she works. She plans to leave the next day for a two-week vacation on Aruba. But she waits to learn if the directors of Palmer Milliken, conferring at a meeting before the holiday, name her a partner in the firm.

Though in her mid-20’s, young to be a partner, Goff is already a capable lawyer. She’s also intimate with the firm’s managing partner, Henry “Hank” Ogden. Hayman describes him as: “Her mentor. Her boss. Her lover. Elegant. Rich, 53 years old. And very, very married.”

As we find in the book’s first few pages, Goff isn’t voted in as a full partner. Neither does she go to Aruba.

Days go by before her naked, frozen body is found stuffed in the trunk of her Mercedes Benz on the Portland waterfront.

As the who-dun-it plot unfolds, one comes to admire Hayman as a genius of suspenseful writing. His main character, McCabe, fingers half a dozen prime suspects in Goff’s death. There’s Ogden, for one. Another is an ex-priest who runs a refuge for homeless teens. There’s “the hotdog man” who sells drugs on the side (Goff was among his customers), and a creepy landlord who put video cameras in every room of Goff’s apartment.

A wonderfully drawn character, pivotal to the novel’s outcome is a young schizophrenic who grew up on Harts Island. Abby Quinn evokes reader sympathy as she’s plagued by voices in her head. But that’s not all she has to worry about.

Like his fictional police detective, Hayman moved from New York City to Maine several years ago. Unlike the detective, he previously worked in a New York advertising agency. Hayman and his wife, artist Jeanne O’Toole, live on Peaks Island.

“The Chill of Night” is an engrossing, character-driven novel. My only complaint, and it’s a small one, has to do with the length of the book and the number of murder suspects.

But there’s nothing tedious about this mystery. It’s a page-turner. All 352 of them.

(3.5) "The cop and the corpse. A strangely intimate relationship."
By Luan Gaines
On concluding this thriller, I am left with mixed feelings, the story defined ultimately by the investigation rather than the characters. The murder of a young woman, an attorney in a prestigious New England law firm, stuns the city of Portland, Maine, when he body is found frozen in the trunk of her car. Lainie Goff is a woman of secrets, pursuing a clandestine affair to boost her career, volunteering her time to aid troubled teenagers at Sanctuary House. Most disturbing for Detective Michael McCabe is Lainie's resemblance to McCabe's beautiful and unfaithful ex-wife, Sandy. Working with Maggie Savage, from Portland's Crimes Against People Unit, the detectives hone in on the most suspicious characters in Lainie's life, but when an eye witness appears at the police station on Hart's Island, McCabe's hopes for a speedy resolution are shattered: Abby Quinn is a diagnosed schizophrenic. Although the Hart's Island police dismiss Abby's claims, McCabe and Savage worry for the young woman's safety.

Hayman depends on the rhythms of a thorough police investigation to propel the story, moving between Portland and the island, the final confrontation with the killer on a cliff high over the crashing waves below. This is an inside view of police work, from the discovery of the first heinous crime to those that follow, a cat-and-mouse game of misdirection and conflicting evidence, the killer hiding in plain sight. The dialog carries the story line. To that end, the characters we know best are McCabe, Maggie and their coworkers, suspects grilled in interrogation rooms, forensics teams pouring over crime scenes. Because of this attention to detail, the story loses some of its human appeal, with a "Law and Order" feel rather than an exploration of characters and motives. Still, the author keeps a relentless pace, even though the reader may suspect the bad guy prematurely. Luan Gaines/2010.

James Hayman is the real deal
By Elizabeth A. White
Called to the Portland Fish Pier late one night to investigate a report of a body Detective Sergeant Michael McCabe is confronted with a dead woman in the trunk of an abandoned car, frozen solid by the bitter Maine cold. The body is quickly identified as local attorney Lainie Goff, a woman with a past as mysterious as her future was ambitious.

Prior to her murder Goff had been on the fast track to becoming the youngest associate to make partner at the prestigious law firm where she worked, though her chances at making the grade relied as much on her secret affair with her married boss as her skill as a litigator. Yet, she also quietly worked pro bono for Sanctuary House, a local non-profit organization dedicated to helping troubled teens.

Did someone in her cutthroat legal world have it in for her, or is there something sinister in her past that both led to her work with Sanctuary House and her death? Initially leads in the investigation seem as cold as the corpse. Then McCabe and his partner Maggie Savage get word that a young woman on Hart's Island, just across from the pier, claims to have witnessed a murder.

Unfortunately the young woman, Abby Quinn, is a known schizophrenic with a history of reporting her outlandish hallucinations to the police. In fact, Abby's claim of having witnessed a murder is initially ignored by the Hart's Island police until news of the discovery of the body on the pier reaches them. Unfortunately, by that time four days have passed and Abby has disappeared. Now in order to solve the murder McCabe must first find the missing witness... before the killer does.

The Chill of Night strikes a great balance between the development of characters and the unfolding of the investigation. Hayman brings an attention to detail to the investigation that is often overlooked - or flat out gotten wrong - in crime fiction. For example, early on there is some question as to the legality of the search of the car trunk where the body was found. Knowing that could jeopardize any subsequent prosecution, McCabe makes sure to point out to the initial responding officer that during the more detailed search a small package of suspicious powder was found under the front seat and suggests that, perhaps, that's what made the officer investigate the trunk. Feelings about the morality of the officer having a revisionist memory of events aside, it's a nice attention to detail that adds a layer of believability to the procedural aspect of the story.

Likewise, Hayman's character development is so understated you don't initially realize just how well you are getting to know the players. He makes them so real there is no leap of faith or suspension of belief required to picture them as people you could actually interact with in your own life. Abby in particular is exquisitely presented. Far from being a caricature, Abby's thoughts and internal struggles with her illness are presented with a frankness that is a refreshing treatment of a mentally ill character in a crime novel. In the book's acknowledgments Hayman indicates that he did significant research on schizophrenia in his preparation for writing The Chill of Night and it shows. Abby, from whose point of view a portion of the story is told, is heartbreakingly real.

The Chill of Night is the second book in the Michael McCabe series, following The Cutting. You don't have to have read The Cutting in order to enjoy The Chill of Night, but I can guarantee you'll want to go back and pick it up if you haven't. James Hayman is the real deal, and the Michael McCabe series is one to put on your "buy on release day" list.

entertaining wintry Maine police procedural
By A Customer
In Maine at the Portland Fish Exchange, an abandoned car contains a naked corpse. Portland PD Detectives Michael McCabe and Maggie Savage lead the investigation into the homicide of young attorney Lanie Goff. A piece of paper stating: "Amos. 9:10" is left with the frozen body; Michael knows that means sinners must be punished.

On nearby Harts Island paranoid schizophrenic Abby Quinn hears voices in her head; her psychiatrist prescribes medicine to help her. She works at the Legion bar, which she closed early. That is how she saw the naked man use a blade to puncture a nude woman's neck. Stunned she runs to the local Portland PD station where she wakes up Bowman the cop on duty. He assumes she was having one of her hallucinations so he offers to take her to the hospital instead. Now four days later, McCabe heads to Harts Island to interview a witness that the local cop did not believe so a jury would be even less likely to do so. McCabe knows that if he fails to find the culprit Death will occur again as the killer believes the Lord has sanctioned his or her quest.

This is an entertaining wintry Maine police procedural with a strong likable lead cop whose personal issues somewhat intrude on his investigation as little things he cannot help doing like comparing the victim to his ex-wife. That family intrusion and his "probable cause" to open the car trunk enhance the inquiry with realism. McCabe (see The Cutting) and the unique refreshing witness Abby make for a fine whodunit in a frozen locale only detracted by an avenging serial killer who is stereotypical of the subgenre.

Gideon's Spies: The Secret History of the Mossad, by Gordon Thomas

In the secret world of spies and covert operations, no other intelligence service continues to be surrounded by myth and mystery, or commands respect and fear, like Israel’s Mossad. Formed in 1951 to ensure an embattled Israel’s future, the Mossad has been responsible for the most audacious and thrilling feats of espionage, counterterrorism, and assassination ever ventured.

Gideon’s Spies draws from classified documents, confidential sources, and closed-door interviews with Mossad agents, informants, and spymasters to reveal the organization’s deepest secrets. This fifth edition is completely updated with new information, including the Mossad hospital raid that eventually uncovered sleeper cells in Britain, the assassination of the world’s second most-wanted terrorist, the discovery of an unknown nuclear facility in Iran, the intricate relationship between Israeli intelligence and the Bush administration’s war on terror, and why one former Mossad chief says, “We are looking down the barrel of World War III unless the world wakes up.”

Amazon.com Review
The Mossad was formed in 1951 to coordinate the intelligence-gathering efforts of the still-young nation of Israel. In the nearly half century since, it has become a force to be reckoned with, boasting an impressive track record of counterterrorist actions and assassinations. Gideon's Spies is loaded with anecdotes of their greatest exploits (and a few colossal blunders). Among the most interesting sections are the suggestions that Mossad agents killed media tycoon Robert Maxwell in 1991, that the agency's attempted recruitment of Henri Paul, the driver of Princess Diana's car that fateful night, may have caused sufficient emotional distress to be a contributing factor in the accident, and that Mossad operatives in America had tapes of the phone-sex conversations between President Bill Clinton and his lover Monica Lewinsky. There's also some extensive material on the links between the Israelis and the Vatican, including the Mossad's role in the investigation into the attempted 1981 assassination of Pope John Paul II and the agency's constant battles against the PLO. An interesting nonfiction read for fans of international spy thrillers.

From Publishers Weekly
Among the world's most respected and feared intelligence services, the Israeli Mossad encompasses shadowy networks of katsas (case officers) often operating undercover, from Washington to Tehran to Beijing. The third update of this well-received book adds expanded sections on postinvasion Iraq, the black market in nuclear material, and other topics, tying up several loose ends from the earlier editions. Large portions remain unchanged, however, giving the book an uneven quality, as some chapters were written in 1994, some in 1999, some in 2004 and some last summer. Thomas's engrossing stories about assassinations, target surveillance and other skullduggery keep the pages turning, but the serious student of the Middle East may be put off by some purple prose, for example, about Saddam in incarceration: "His shaggy salt-and-pepper beard is trimmed once a week, enhancing his sharp, penetrating eyes.... But he will have an opportunity to state his case—more than he had ever allowed those he murdered." Skeptics will wonder what ulterior motives inspired Thomas's many tight-lipped sources to open up to him and will question their information, particularly regarding the more incredible conspiracy theories he writes about. Overall, however, Thomas provides a rare and valuable glimpse at the inner workings of a very secretive organization. (Jan.)

From Library Journal
The Mossad is one of Israels elite security agencies, responsible mainly for operations outside the countrys borders. Its reputation (somewhat tarnished in recent years) for efficiency and daring combined with more than a touch of ruthlessness still evokes fear in Israels perceived enemies. Thomas, a prolific author of fiction and nonfiction on espionage and international security, has pieced together a book based largely on interviews with people both inside and outside the Mossad, as well as from other international intelligence agencies. Each chapter examines a particular action, operation, or political crisis and offers an entertaining and heavily anecdotal account. While the book is neither as scholarly in approach as Ian Black and Benny Morriss Israels Secret Wars: A History of Israels Intelligence Service (LJ 6/1/91) nor as controversial as ex-Mossad agent Victor Ostrovsky and Claire Hoys By Way of Deception (LJ 11/15/90), Thomas has a winner here. Recommended for academic and larger public libraries, especially those collecting in Israeli politics or international intelligence.Stephen W. Green, Auraria Lib., Denver

Fascinating but disjointed
By A Customer
I thought this book was great in most ways. The Mossad is presented as an agency that will do anything to save Israel, to the point of assassination and framing their own agents. I have one major quibble though: his organization of the case histories/biographies/modern Israeli history was so annoying I wanted to tear my hair out by the end of the book. For example, a priest at Robert Maxwell's funeral leads to a shadowy meeting in the Vatican which goes to a flashback to Golda Meir meeting Paul VI to a flashback of James Jesus Angleton & Pius XII. A flashback to a flashback to a flashback?!?! And he starts the book with the Princess Diana tragedy, hinting more than a little it wasn't just a car crash. Apparently a Mossad agent was attempting to enlish Henri Paul around the time of her death. But after she dies, the Mossad is barely mentioned for 30 pages except that they probably know something about it. I know he's an English journalist and the Diana death makes juicy copy, but why don't we start a book on the history of the Mossad with SOMETHING ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THE MOSSAD?!?! So, I give Gideon's Spies 5 stars on content but a half a star on organization.

Arguably, the Most Reliable, Accurate Book on the Subject
By Freedom Fighter
Books about the history and activities of espionage organizations (both gathering intelligence and covert operation) are by nature subject to be taken with a grain of salt, since the nature of the business is secrecy.

Gordon Thomas does a good job unveiling that secrecy through his various sources, some named, some not, some within the Mossad organization itself, and many from without. He explicitly names these sources on an "acknowledgment page," citing his sources within Israel and Elsewhere. One can only judge the credibility of the information by comparing it to other accounts of the same operations, and asking oneself if it is believable based upon consistency with factual events.

Thomas pulls no punches in portraying the Mossad as arguably the most effective intelligence service in the world. He reveals their various tactics including psychological warfare, their legendary human intelligence capabilities, their worldwide presence (Thomas claims the Mossad has a mole in the White House, which the FBI has been searching for for years), and their covert assassination teams (known as kidons), and their ruthlessness in getting the job done in the defense of the State

Thomas excels at this, especially with this new, updated 2007 edition that covers the role Mossad plays and continues to play in the Iraq War, and probably an upcoming pre-emptive war with Israel's arch foe, Iran. He reveals tidbits of information, such as the unconfirmed "fact" that Israel possesses three nuclear missile armed submarines, currently in the Persian Gulf, off the coast of Iran, completing its triad of nuclear umbrella cover. This, as an example, is something that Israel would probably never really officially confirm or deny. But it passes the "does it make sense?" test with flying colors. Israel's land based nuclear facilities at Dimona (in the Negev Desert) is probably the worst kept military "secret" in the world." Nuclear payloads can be delivered by missile, aircraft, or seaborne vessels. Bombing Iran by air would not be practical due to the long ranges involved, so it does indeed make sense that it would need a third, seaborne leg of its nuclear capabilities.

Other accounts conflict to varying degrees with other sources. Since covert agents routinely use aliases, this is not unexpected; however, Thomas identifies the famous "man who captured Eichman" as the long term Israeli spymaster Rafi Eitan. Others, including Peter (Zvi) Malkin wrote a book on the subject some years ago, in which he takes credit for making the first physical contact with Eichman on that audacious mission in 1960.

There are several useful resources included in the book, including a comprehensive index, a list of the Directors-General of Mossad, along with their years of service from 1951 through the present, a general glossary, and an additional brief glossary of Arabic terms, and of course a bibliography and acknowledgment of sources and credits.

My only criticism is that the time line of events recounted is not linear, sometimes making it difficult to follow. But the more you know about Israeli history, the easier it is to overcome this. Also, the sheer length of the book (587 pages, not including addenda), makes for a long, but fascinating read. The newly released 2007 version of this came out just in time - a lot has happened since the original version.

This book should appeal to anyone interested in Israeli defense, politics, and especially espionage. Highly recommended for serious students of Israel..

A fascinating mix of fact and speculation.
By Michael J. Edelman
If only half of what Thomas divulges in this book is true, it's a blockbuster. And I would speculate that perhaps half has the ring of truth- but which half? Probably just the well-documented parts used to give a veneer of truth to the fabricated bits. Amid all the stories of the deceptions and intelligence games played by the world's secret services, it's tempting to suspect that Thomas is being played as much as any of the other dupes he tells of. Did Khomeni order the assassination of John Paul? Did the Mossad kill Robert Maxwell? Who knows?
The tales Thomas tells are often very critical of the Mossad, yet running through the book is the implication that the Mossad is the only competant intelligence organization on the planet, and that all other intelligence organizations are staffed with bumbling fools.
The book seesm to give the impression is that Thomas' principle source of information is one or more retired or discharged Mossad officers who have both a pride in the organization as well as an axe or two to grind, but the reader begins to doubt that at least halfway through the book. Many of the stories just don't add up. Some, like the story of Gerald Bull, are absolutely at odds with versions told by well-established sources and thoroughly documented. The Bull story in particular reads like a sloppy farbication by someone who hasn't done a lot of research.
Most of it is completely unverifiable, and a great deal of it strikes me as completely fabricated. And maybe, just maybe, the book is a piece of disinformation itself, designed to mislead and confuse. Who knows? File it on your bookshelves somewhere midway between Le Carre and Fleming.

Why does Vanessa keep falling for married men?

Not that she knows she does. At least not at first. But every man who seems like he might be the one turns out to be someone else’s. So maybe the right thing to do is take a vow to stay single, to keep away from all men, until she can figure things out.

At least work is a bright spot: It’s an anchor to be so good at something, to lose yourself in your job, and Vanessa is a whiz of a chef, so good she makes her grandstanding boss, Hawk—of Albuquerque’s chic Nuevo American restaurant hawk—look good. After all, it’s his name on the awning above the door. If only her friends and family would get on board with Vanessa’s plan and stop trying to fix her up. If she can’t fix her life, nobody else is going to get the chance to try—not her parents, not her friends, and certainly not her ultra-well-meaning but just-not-getting-it sister, Larissa.

And nothing could be more with the plan than helping out at her parents’ house—gardening, keeping them fed, getting them organized with her loyal pet Red Dog by her side. Red Dog is all the companionship she needs. Until Vanessa meets Paul, her parents’ neighbor—he’s all wrong on paper, but he’s got great manners and certainly seems safe. Not bad in the kissing department, either. But just when Vanessa’s guard goes down, the red flag goes up: Could Paul be yet another married man?

Bursting with Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez’s trademark wit and originality, The Husband Habit introduces a rich and complex heroine in chef Vanessa. You’re not going to want to leave her world when the novel comes to an end.

From Publishers Weekly
The sixth novel from Valdes-Rodriguez (The Dirty Girls Social Club) is a mixed bag of overly ambitious prose, lighthearted romance and southwestern flavor. Vanessa Duran, one of Albuquerque's most talented chefs, keeps falling in love with married men, so after a string of dud relationships, her sister extracts a promise: Vanessa will take a break from dating and use the time to figure out why she keeps getting involved with all the wrong men. Of course, Vanessa is attracted to the very next guy who crosses her path—Paul Stebbit, an unpretentious Iraq War veteran. The sparks and banter fly, and Paul seems different enough from her other disastrous relationships that Vanessa begins to open up to him. Of course, an obvious complication pops up. Vanessa's Albuquerque serves as a nice backdrop, and the characters avoid most genre pitfalls, but there's an uncomfortable disconnect between the expository passages and the inane dialogue, and some plot developments (particularly one involving a date featuring a flight in a fighter jet) stretch credibility. A few big holes come close to killing the froth. (July)

Absolutely Horrible
By Stacia Muellers
I haven't been able to do any pleasure reading for 4 months because I've been taking two classes and working. FINALLY I was going on vacation and looking forward to light fun beach reading. I've read three of her other books and liked them so I grabbed this one with anticipation. What a complete let down. Not only were the plot and the characters dull, but the political "slant" was infuriating. It just seemed like an uninformed liberal espousing knee-jerk views that she assumes everyone else agrees with. She never even articulated a real viewpoint, just a lot of gross generalizations. Particularly offensive was her suggestion that going to a US military base is entering "enemy territory." Are you kidding me? No matter what you believe about government, or past governments, these are the people who fought for her freedom to express her ridiculous views. This will be my last book of hers I read, ever.

The Force?
By Gary Harvey
The Husband Habit was very disappointing to me. As an Air Force wife of many years, I never heard it referred to as "the Force". Nor would a retired pilot be able to take a fake reporter on a flight. The political agenda expressed in this book was so blatant that it overshadowed the whole story. I got so angry with the inaccuracies that I couldn't finish the last chapter! Perhaps Ms Valdez-Rodriguez might get some military advisers before she attempts to write about the Air Force!

Not for me....
By AyLorena
I love Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez books (I have them all!) but this one was not really what I expected. Completely different than all her other books, if that's the style you are expecting to read. (You know ....Funny, exciting, juicy, can't put down....) It discusses serious issues about the war, religions and personal beliefs and that's great but some may be offended by her approach. Her characters have strong beliefs but keep an open mind. It's not t-h-a-t bad. Also, definitely too many food details. I guess if you were a chef, you might appreciate it. I love to cook and eat and always looking for a great recipe but seriously over done with the food details. It's slow and once she's done talking so much about food, the story gets better to read but by then, you're practically done with the book. I finished it fast but that's because I was ready to move on. :/

Business Lessons from a Radical Industrialist, by Ray C. Anderson, Robin White

In 1994, Ray Anderson was 60 years old and at the top of his game as founder and CEO of Atlanta-based Interface, Inc., a modular carpet company that makes those clever carpet tiles that you may have underfoot in your office or coveted via the company's residential brand, FLOR.

That was 17 years ago - before 'green' was the compelling business imperative that it is today (for reference, oil was then $18/bbl), and frankly, the environment was nowhere on Ray's radar.  An Interface associate asked Ray to give a speech to a task force that was forming to answer customer concerns about environmental impacts, and though he had not a clue what he would say, he accepted.  As the date for the speech grew closer, he began to sweat -- and then Paul Hawken's book, The Ecology of Commerce, landed on his desk.  The rest is green business history -- Ray read the book (he's called it a 'spear in the chest' epiphany), his outlook was radically transformed, and he gave a speech that would put the petroleum-dependent carpet company on a path to zero environmental footprint.

What's happened in the intervening years has made Interface the poster child for green business, and Ray's become a bit of an eco rock star. He ditched his gas-guzzling Jaguar in favor of a Prius, built an off-the-grid home, and today, at 76, his life is radically different than what he would have imagined for himself at age 60.  This is his story.

Review
Sustainability, argues Anderson, makes just as much business sense as it does a liberal crusade, and he even makes absorbing reading out of the process that transformed his operations.

--Publisher's Weekly

He may be 'radical' but he's also a profit-seeking businessman. Ray has found a new path that's good for the planet and great for his business.   --Andrew Winston, environmental strategist, author of Green Recovery and co-author of Green to Gold

If we had a lot more businessmen like Ray Anderson, the planet would be neither bankrupt or overheated. He is a hero, and this book makes clear why! --Bill McKibben, author of Deep Economy

We are in desperate need of hope, but if hope is to be credible and trustworthy, it has to walk a straight line.  No one does this better than Ray Anderson. --Paul Hawken, author of The Ecology of Commerce, Natural Capitalism, and Blessed Unrest

Ray put everything he has built at his company on the line for what he believed and created a model of profitable sustainability and humanity. This tale of how and why is a great story.   --Jonathan Lash, President, World Resources Institute

“Inspirational . . . Essential reading for anyone, whether lay, student, or practitioner, interested in business success today and in the environment.” ―Library Journal (starred review)

From the Author
From the Prologue:
My company, Interface, Inc., has just marked an important milestone - 10 years until our target year for Mission Zero, for zero environmental footprint, a goal for which we have set 2020 as our deadline.  I'm immensely proud of Interface, and encouraged about our future.
You may be familiar with my story - the epiphany I experienced in 1994 when I read Paul Hawken's book, The Ecology of Commerce, seeking inspiration for a speech to a task force that was organizing at Interface to answer customer concerns about the environment. That change of world view led me down a road I had never imagined for myself or my petroleum-intensive company - eventually to get off oil.
Distancing ourselves from the wellhead requires that we re-imagine the antiquated, linear, take-make-waste industrial system of which we are all a part.  And instead, to become part of a thoughtful, cooperative, cyclical system that mimics nature in the way that we design, source, manufacture, sell, install - and eventually reclaim and recycle - our products.  This ambitious undertaking requires new technology, new inputs, new thinking.  It is intensely complicated and, at the same time, completely liberating to think outside the traditional confines of design and manufacturing.  Somewhere along the way, the idea that what we were doing was so right - so right, and so smart - emerged to propel us forward.
At Interface, this new way of thinking is working - our products are better than ever, our employees are more engaged than ever, customers are extraordinarily loyal; and, importantly, costs are down, not up, dispelling the myth that sustainability is expensive. That's the story you'll find in more detail in this book.

About the Author
Ray C. Anderson, founder and chairman, Interface, Inc. (IFSIA)
The story is now legend: the "spear in the chest" epiphany Ray Anderson experienced when he first read Paul Hawken's The Ecology of Commerce, seeking inspiration for a speech to an Interface task force on the company's environmental vision.  Seventeen years and a sea change later, Ray estimates that Interface is more than half-way towards the vision of "Mission Zero," the journey no one would have imagined for the company or the petroleum-intensive industry of carpet manufacturing which has been forever changed by Ray's vision. Interface is redesigning processes and products,  pioneering new technologies, and making efforts to reduce or eliminate waste and harmful emissions while increasing the use of renewable materials and sources of energy.  Ray chronicles that journey in a new "how" and "why" to on sustainability, Business Lessons from a Radical Industrialist, (St. Martin's Griffin, 2011) the paperback follow-up to the book, Confessions of a Radical Industrialist, published by St. Martin's Press in September 2009.

An honors graduate of Georgia Institute of Technology, Ray learned the carpet trade through 14-plus years at various positions in the textiles industry, and in 1973, set about founding a company to produce the first free-lay carpet tiles in America.  Today, he chairs the world's largest producer of modular commercial floorcoverings.  Interface has diversified and globalized its businesses, with sales in 110 countries and manufacturing facilities on four continents.

Inspiring
By Peter
If only the world had more Ray Andersons. The fact that he turned a company reliant on the use of petrochemicals for the production of its core product into one with sustainability as its core ideaology and was abel to improve his profits is outstanding. Any and every company can learn something from this book.

The Power of One
By K K Tse
This is more than an excellent book. I have read both Anderson's books, including the Chinese translation of Business Lessons from a Radical Industrialist. It is gratifying to witness the translation of the book into Chinese as it deserves to be read by all those who have an interest to know how business should be run in this big country.

I have been so impressed by what Ray and his company have achieved that I have the strong urge to write a book about it myself. I will use liberally the materials from all his publications and will present them in a way that would be easier for the general public, especially those from the business community, to read and understand.

I will also add a few chapters on how Ray's company, Interface, has inspired other companies to follow their example, notably Walmart. This demonstrates the Power of One, ie. how one individual, one company could make a major, disporportionate impact on the world.

It will be some time before my book will appear. In the meantime, I strongly recommend this book by Ray to anyone who wants to have a glimpse of what the corporations of the 21st century could become.

surprised at the packaging quality!
By Ryan Garaventa
I had this shipped to school for my spring semester and though it took longer than estimated to get to me, i was pleasantly surprised when on the box it said "Hand made box, we recycle! Good luck this semester!" woah wasn't expecting that. The book was in great quality like the description said. This has been my best amazon experience so far!

Stepping Stones: A Guided Approach to Writing Sentences and Paragraphs, by Chris Juzwiak

Recognizing that many students in the sentence-to-paragraph-level course have experienced repeated failure in the past, Stepping Stones takes a fresh approach to the core challenges of the course. The book clearly articulates — textually and visually — the sentence patterns that college writers need to master. Then, it patiently guides students through every step of building these sentences and recognizing common problems in them. Additionally, the book offers unusually thorough, carefully staged guidance in developing and organizing ideas — two of the most difficult tasks for developmental students.

Drawing on years of classroom experience, award-winning educator Chris Juzwiak recognizes that all students have the potential to become better writers and just need the right tools to succeed.

English Grammar Workbook Surprising
By Accenture CO
I was pleasantly surprised that this book is exactly the kind of book I had been seeking to polish my English grammar skills.

This book contains twenty chapters organized into six parts. The parts and chapters are (using a summary version for some of the lengthy titles):

Part I: Grammar Basics

Chapter 1: Finding the Right Verb at the Right Time
Chapter 2: Pairing Subjects and Verbs Correctly
Chapter 3: Pronoun Basics
Chapter 4: Writing Complete Sentences

Part II: Mastering Mechanics

Chapter 5: The Comma
Chapter 6: Apostrophes
Chapter 7: Quotation Marks
Chapter 8: Capital Letters

Part III: Applying Proper Grammar in Tricky Situations

Chapter 9: Choosing the Best Pronoun: Case, Number, and Clarity
Chapter 10: Choosing the Right Verb for Tricky Sentences
Chapter 11: Are You and Your Verbs in the Right Mood?
Chapter 12: Writing for Electronic Media

Part IV: Describing and Comparing

Chapter 13: Adjectives and Adverbs
Chapter 14: Placing Descriptions Correctly
Chapter 15: Forming Comparisons

Part V: Improving Your Writing Style

Chapter 16: Parallel Writing
Chapter 17: Adding Spice and Cutting Fat from Your Sentences
Chapter 18: Steering Clear of Tricky Word Traps

Part VI: The Part of Tens

Chapter 19: Ten Overcorrections
Chapter 20: Ten Errors to Avoid at All Costs

Each chapter contains sections, with each section describing a grammar concept. Each section contains questions about the grammar concept (chapters 19 and 20 are the exception, as neither has any questions). The number of questions varies from a few to dozens. The answers for each chapter are at the end of the chapter, making checking of answers relatively easy, noting that chapters 19 and 20 are the exception, since neither has any questions.
At the end of the book is a marvelous appendix containing exercises with the title "Grabbing Grammar Goofs." The appendix has nearly 200 questions testing the concepts of the book. Thus, the appendix is a great way to determine how well a reader has learned the lessons of the twenty chapters.

Following the appendix is an index. I found the index to be of mixed value. I sometimes found it easier to flip through pages than to use the index because I could not always remember the name of the part of speech I was seeking. I suppose with sufficient practice remembering the names will become second nature.

The question is whether this book is effective, useful and valuable, and for whom this book might be valuable. I found the book to be extremely effective. For example, I have a nasty tendency to use "which" inappropriately. Let me provide an example of a sentence I might write. "I believe there are portions of this book that I will use daily, which is a very good thing." The word "which" is a pronoun that is supposed to be substituting for something in the previous sentence. However, in the case of my example I improperly used "which" to refer to most of the sentence.

There are many ways to rephrase my example sentence. One variation might be, "I believe there are portions of this book that I will use daily, meaning that this book could be quite beneficial." As you can see from this example, there could be dozens or even hundreds of correct ways to rephrase my example sentence. Therein is one of the difficulties of this book. This book is great for helping to remind me of what is right and wrong in English grammar. This book is less effective at answers to the question.

Does my criticism mean that this book is useless? A weakness does not mean the book is useless. The weakness means that the book will not be useful to all levels of English grammar students. I think that if you are using this book to recall rules you once learned, or need to figure out where you might have holes in your education, then this book is fantastic. I always thought my English grammar skills were above average. All it takes is a book like this to make one humble, or perhaps to embarrass someone who thought he, or she, was doing the right thing when he was not.

My biggest criticism of the book is the corny jokes. Some of them are mildly humorous. Many of the jokes just get in the way of getting to the important stuff. I suppose the author intended the jokes to help the learning experience. I found myself zipping through portions of the explanation that included the jokes. Unfortunately, I also accidentally zipped through some of the explanation, so I had to re-read some portions.

Who will not find this book useful? If you are trying to learn English grammar, this book is a poor starting point. There is too little explanation for each of the topics. On the other hand, if you use the book as an outline and augment each explanation with more research and practice, it could be an effective portion of a bigger learning plan.

I have been looking for a book that would provide me with an overview of English grammar. I thought I had gotten somewhat sloppy and needed something to put me back on track; I was right. This book was perfect for my needs. I can also see this book as a great help to prepare for the SAT, ACT or other test that asks detailed questions regarding English grammar.

Enjoy!

If you're looking for a book with thousands of grammar exercises that also tackles the writing process, look no further. The second edition is even better, though.

Ladies' Man: An Autobiography, by Paul Henreid, Julius Fast

Best known to American audiences as the suave continental who lit two cigarettes at once as he comforted Bette Davis in the legendary film Now Voyager, Paul Henreid led a life as exciting as any Hollywood movie. The actor who created the role of Resistance leader Victor Lazlo in movie history's best-known film, Casablanca, tells the no less dramatic and colorful story of his own life beginning with his charmed childhood among the aristocrats of pre-World War I Vienna, where amiability and elegance were the order of the day for the von Hernried family. As a young man about town Paul attended balls and parties, but this carefree life ended when his father died and the family's financial status reversed. Against his mother's wishes, Paul established a career in the theatre in Vienna, London, and later New York. He recounts his refusal to join the Nazi actors' guild and his stage triumphs in England and the United States. Without bitterness, he recalls how his Hollywood film career was all but destroyed by the blacklist, upon which he was wrongly placed, and how he found a second career as a director/producer for movies and television. Paul Henreid's multifaceted career (he directed about eighty Hitchcock TV shows) spanned more than fifty years, three hundred films, and two continents. He brings to this sophisticated autobiography the same elegant, sensuous, continental style he brought to his illustrious show-business career.

A Good Read
By Mary B. Wheeler
I truly enjoyed this book. You can really feel as though Henreid is speaking to you. It is nice to read about a celebrity who had principles and stood by them. He was not only a gifted actor but a director, as well. I particularly enjoyed reading about his directing episodes of some of the television shows I watched as a teenager. And, of course I loved reading about all his starring roles in some of my favorite movies. It is well written and an easy read. I highly recommend this autobiography.

Great Autobiography
By C. Mathieu
This book has 45 beautiful black & white photos and 270 pages on which the Austrian actor describes his upbringing in Vienna and how he refused to join the Nazi's actors' guild and rather established a career in England.Henreid dedicates one entire chapter to his best film "Now Voyager" and another chapter to "Casablanca". It then describes the years when actors and other artists have been under tremendous pressure due to the blacklist. His last film was in 1977 with Richard Burton (The Exorcist II) and the book ends in 1980.
Try to get a used hardcover copy with dust wrapper as it contains the best photo from "Now Voyager" and also a good description of the book.
I really enjoyed reading this one!

Henreid's History
By Animal Luvr
Paul Henreid was a good actor in Hollywood films of the forties and early fifties, after having made a name for himself in Austria and England. He had a few top notch film roles--the secondary male lead in the classic "Casablanca" with Bogart and Ingrid Bergman and the role of Bette Davis' great love in "Now Voyager," in which he lights the two cigarettes that became a sensation at the time.

He also appeared with Ida Lupino, Hedy Lamarr, Joan Bennett, Lizabeth Scott, Maureen O'Hara, Eleanor Parker and other leading ladies of the day. He paints a picture of being one of the great leading men of the time; however, he wasn't even close. The top leading men included Robert Taylor, Tyrone Power, Clark Gable, Errol Flynn -- he was never in a class with any of them.

He spins tales of the early days in Austria and the beginnings of his London stage career with ease and charm. But when he gets to the states his tales seem somewhat exaggerated.

There are a number of mistakes amongst his Hollywood tales. For instance. he states that Warner Bros threatened all their leading men with the lead in The Beast With Five Fingers (including him) and that Vincent Price finally played the role. Price was not in the film--Peter Lorre was. He states that he appeared in Four Horsemen of the Apocolpyse with Robert Wagner. Wagner was not a cast member. And he states that he directed James Garner and Paul Kelly in the Maverick TV series. Paul Kelly was a character actor of the forties and fifties and was not in Maverick. Jack Kelly was the other Maverick.

Because of these and other noticeable errors it is hard to sometimes believe much of what he remembers about his life.

The book is nicely written and contains some interesting pictures from his life and his career.
