Current Issues and Enduring Questions: A Guide to Critical Thinking and Argument, with Readings, by Sylvan Barnet, Hugo Bedau

The unique collaborative effort of a distinguished interdisciplinary team -- a professor of English and a professor of philosophy -- Current Issues and Enduring Questions is a balanced and flexible book that provides the benefit of the authors' dual expertise in effective persuasive writing and rigorous critical thinking. Its comprehensive coverage of classic and contemporary approaches to argument includes Aristotle, Toulmin, and a range of alternative views, making it an extraordinarily versatile text. Readings on contemporary controversies (including the purpose of a college education, immigration, a peacetime draft, and obesity) and classic philosophical questions (such as, "How free is the will of the individual?") are sure to spark student interest and lively discussion and writing. Refined through seven widely adopted previous editions, it has been revised to address current student interests and trends in argument, research, and writing, and has been updated with compelling new topics and readings and more on analyzing visuals and presenting oral arguments. No other text and reader offers such an extensive resource for teaching argument.

Good intro text; watch out for edition number
By Jenny H
Good intro to the principles of critical thinking. It was a little weird for me to have this book assigned in grad school; I remember it from my daughter's college freshman year.

New editions keep the readings current, but that means you have to pay attention to the edition number if you want (or your prof wants) a particular edition. Many vendors, Amazon and Amazon Marketplace included, don't post it clearly, if at all.

(Previewing my review, I see I mis-clicked and gave it 5 stars. I meant to hit 4, because it's so draggingly introductory at times.)

Many students keep this book
By Amy Sterling Casil
Like Rufo, I have also taught college English since 1999. I have used Current Issues & Enduring Questions since 2000 or so. This book helps students learn needed concepts and skills much more than (hate to say it), literature-based readers. It is so well-designed and thought-out, and each edition, having now used three, grows stronger. That's from a teacher's perspective. I find students engaged, their work is fantastic, and they read things that should be part of anyone's education - then they can synthesize these readings with their experience and growth. Yes, students really do get engaged, and really do keep this book. That is a real "first" for me, in terms of a "college English text." This is my "good deed" of the day. Be sure to order with enough time in advance to receive your book as you order it for your classes (especially used versions).

Good, solid textbook for Freshman Composition II
By Jonathon York
Teaching college English since 1999, I've used _Current Issues and Enduring Questions_ since the 7th edition. It has always been a good, solid textbook for teaching Freshman Composition II (called ENGL 1302 in Texas) as an issues-based argumentative essays and research paper class. It is flexible enough a text for any teacher to craft his/her class. However, if you're used to teaching ENGL 1302 as a survey to Literature class, this isn't the text for you.

The only problem I have with it is the skimpyness of some of the MLA style instruction, but that's par for the course in Comp II books that have extensive readings.

Dry, with serious factual flaws
By Daniel R. Baker
Over the past year I have had the opportunity to compare this book with Roark's The American Promise, and I would highly recommend Roark over this book.

The most serious flaw of the Henretta text is its cavalier attitude toward the facts. This is worst in its section on World War II. For example, on pages 800-801, we read "In July 1943 after Benito Mussolini's Fascist regime fell and Mussolini was executed, Italy's new government joined the Allies." Of course, in reality, Mussolini was promptly restored to power by German occupation and did not die until 1945; nor was he executed, but rather murdered by partisans without benefit of trial. On page 805, we read that "The capture of Iwo Jima and Okinawa put bombers in position to attack Japan itself," when in fact it was the previous year's capture of the Marianas that put the Japanese islands in U.S. bomber range. In the very same paragraph, we read that "Before the Soviets could act, the Japanese offered to surrender on August 10," but in reality the USSR had declared war on Japan on August 8, 1945 and had invaded Japanese-held Manchuria on August 9. This oversight is particularly important, in that some historians argue that it was the Soviet declaration of war as much as the atomic bombs that convinced Japan to surrender.

That the book frequently lapses into tendentious left-wing ideology hardly needs mentioning; the vast majority of academic history textbooks today have the same problem, and non-academic right-wing "correctives," like Thomas Woods, are usually even worse. Still, left-wing writing need not be bad writing, nor as distorting to the historical record as this text's often is. For example, on page 519 we find this passage: "In Europe job-seeking peasants commonly tried seasonal agricultural labor or temporary work in nearby cities. America represented merely a larger leap." This is a feeble attempt to pretend that late-19th and early 20th century Europe offered opportunities similar to America's, and, if accepted, renders America's massively larger immigration rate inexplicable.

As might be expected in a book co-authored by three people, the quality varies considerably from chapter to chapter. Chapter 18, "The Rise of the City," stands out as particularly well written. One good technique the authors use is to place U.S. history in its international context, as when comparing the urban history of Chicago to Berlin or pointing out the origin of Chinese immigration to America in a general flood of Chinese immigration throughout the Pacific in the 19th century. It is only in this respect that this text is superior to Roark, which often skimps on the world-historical setting of U.S. history.

While the authors deserve commendation for trying to address the history of American racial minorities, their efforts usually devolve into a mere listing of grievances, especially as regards Native Americans and Latinos; African American achievements and resistance to prejudice are somewhat better described. Women's history comes off best; the authors are generally, though not always, successful in describing women's experience as an integrated whole in which men's oppressive behavior is only one part.

The book's overwhelming drawback compared to Roark is the poverty of illustrations, which are few, ill-chosen, and exclusively black-and-white. In contrast, the maps are excellent.

I can understand that cash-strapped colleges may prefer this book to Roark because it is cheaper. Still, it should have been possible to create a budget college textbook that was more accurate and less biased.

very readable; the narrative flows gracefully
By W Boudville
The authors had a difficult task. To further shorten their other text, "America's History", by almost 50%. Yet they seem to have succeeded. The book has a logical narrative flow. That does not feel like a standard text. Quite expertly done. When you consider that very disparate topics are covered. Like reform in the Progressive Era, or the emergence of the US as a world power. But somehow, each chapter segues gracefully into its successor.

The book also starts each chapter with a human interest anecdote. To try and bring the chapter's theme down to an easily comprehensible scale. And thus to motivate the reader into absorbing the broader mass of the chapter. The book is well suited for a general audience.

Good history book for summer class
By Dolly
This book was a required reading in a short summer history class. The book reads well and is relatively easy to get through. The chapters are organized into sections based on events, so there were some time jumps that I found confusing, but other than that this was one of the best class books I've had.

There are 1000 stickers but not 1000 stickers of whole animals
By Mom of 3 kids
Many of the stickers are pieces of animals that when pieced together create a whole animal. I understand this if it was advertised as an activity book but I thought from the title that there would actually be 1000 whole animal stickers. My son doesn't seem to mind putting just a tail on his stickers chart (read The Kazdin Method for Parenting the Defiant Child for more info on sticker chart....seriously it has helped our household alot!) but it just wasn't exactly what I expected.

an adult supervision might be required for younger kids...
By Muttley
My four years old son loves stickers an therefore I bought this book. I had read the reviews about the book on amazon so I knew what to expect and some stickers being small or only parts of an animal is no big deal for me. Parts or whole in the end you get 1000 stickers and that is more than enough.

The book is organized in a way that first half you have the places where the kid is supposed to put the stickers and those areas are categorized depending on some common character of the animals (like big cats, ocean animals etc.) The designated places have the names of the animal and has a number which corresponds to the number of the sticker on the second half of the book. Some pages have puzzles where you stick multiple stickers to complete an image (similar to jigsaw puzzles). The second half of the book is all about stickers that are numbered from 1-1000. So the idea is that you find the number you are looking for and get that sticker sticked on the designated place. The stickers may bee peeled back and resticked but since most of them are pretty small, doing this may harm the sticker so I don't recommend it.

That is good fun but requires that a child is able to discriminate 3 digit numbers which might be a little tough for a 3-4 years old. But with supervision and some guidance they can partially handle the task and have some fun.

If your kid is 3-4 years old like mine, he/she can still enjoy but you have to supervise him all the time otherwise he (like my son) starts taking the stickers randomly and sticking everywhere. As long as you can handle the task this book might be for you. And upon completion this can be used as a good guide book to visualize similar animals on the same page.

Over all, I like the concept and my son likes playing with it.

Love our Priddy books!
By Grandma Janice
Great book for my 6 year old Granddaughter. After having a similar book at my house that has been completely used up, it was great to find additional books by the same author on Amazon. It is educational with questions and facts about each of the animals. We really like the numbered stickers that help locate the correct pages and provides a sneaky way to get number education slipped into our fun time. We even keep a count of how many stickers we have placed and can figure out how many of the 1,000 we have left to go. It will be a sad day when we complete this next book!

My daughter LOVES this book
By Leigh Johnson
My 4-month-old daughter absolutely LOVES this book/CD set and any other Priddy Book I've ever purchased for her. They are truly the BEST books for young babies (and I've bought MANY), because they capture and hold their attention for longer periods of time, without over-stimulating her. I can already tell she's going to love reading--but maybe I'm just a proud mama. Thanks Priddy Books!

Not one of our favorite Roger Priddy books (surprising, since his books usually ARE favorites in our home)
By Grandma Zizzy
We have several books/items by Roger Priddy on the numerous bookshelves containing the children's library that's continually grown over the seven years I spent babysitting my grandchildren, so I didn't bat an eye when purchasing this one (despite the fact that it was covered in cellophane wrap - I assume to prevent theft of the included CD - which prevented me from actually looking inside prior to purchasing.) The "Look inside" feature on this listing gives you the visual "feel" of the artwork (though you can't appreciate the tactile feel of the nice embossing details, which youngsters enjoy running their hands over), and shows the first several nursery rhymes (Hey Diddle Diddle/Twinkle Twinkle, Little Star/Mary Mary, Quite Contrary/Hickory Dickory Dock/Little Jack Horner).

Unfortunately, I must say that had I known the rest of the nursery rhymes included - and this is strictly a matter of personal preference - I would not have made the purchase. Following Little Jack Horner is The Queen of Hearts ("... The King of Hearts called for the tarts, and beat the Knave full sore...")/Little Bo Beep/Little Miss Muffet/This Little Piggy/Rock-a-bye Baby/Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush/Old Mother Hubbard/Pat-a-cake, Pat-a-cake/Yankee Doodle/Jack and Jill/Humpty Dumpty/Sing a Song of Sixpence/Pussy Cat, Pussy Cat/Baa Baa, Black Sheep/Three Little Kittens/There Was an Old Woman ("... Then whipped them all soundly and put them to bed..."), and Goosey Goosey Gander. These are TRADITIONAL, unfiltered and NOT watered down versions of these rhymes, and if you're unfamiliar with Goosey, here are the words: "Goosey Goosey Gander, whither shall I wander? Upstairs and downstairs and in my lady's chamber. There I met an old man who would not say his prayers, I took him by the left leg and threw him down the stairs."

There is certainly something to be said for traditional, classic literature, and (as an adult) discovering the history of a book or rhyme and the times during which they were written, but I must admit that I didn't want my young and impressionable grandsons worrying about ever meeting up with that nasty old woman in the shoe, or to imagine for a second that it's "okay" to beat someone for stealing some tarts, or to throw someone down the stairs for not saying their prayers. Youngsters for whom this book was intended are too young to view things in historical context, and are pretty literal in their mental translations (and their vivid imaginations!) I mean, I'm the type of person who - when singing "Rock-a-bye Baby" to my grandsons - has always substituted "Grandma will catch you, cradle and all!" for "Down will come baby, cradle and all." There are certainly literary purists who will feel differently about such "embellishments". You should at least be aware of the contents prior to a purchase.

As for the CD, I suppose (since Mr. Priddy hails from London) I shouldn't be surprised that the woman singing the nursery songs has an English accent (think Julie Andrews in Mary Poppins) - certainly not something I see as a negative (especially since the Mary Poppins soundtrack is included in our collection of children's CDs!), but something that did come as somewhat of a surprise nonetheless. Most of our children's CDs are sung by children with typically American accents (though I myself am not sure what I mean by "American", considering the melting pot that America is and the wonderful variety of people with various ancestral and regional dialects who call it "home"!)

Overall, this is a typically very sturdy board book with child-attractive, textured artwork (and you don't see illustrations of the Knave being beaten, a baby in a cradle falling, children being whipped or an old man being thrown down stairs), the voice on the CD is pleasant enough, but these just aren't nursery rhymes I would've chosen for my grandkids, and it's not a book that's seen much action in our house. I would've used the (2006 copyright date's imprinted US price of) $12.95 on a different book, had I known the contents in advance.

This one is going back to the store or the recycling bin
By OCMomMD
I usually do not write reviews, but this book is so awful, I felt compelled to share. I am shocked that it gets any good reviews. We received this as a gift for our 1 year old daughter. We have another book/cd set from this series, which was Ok (I found the songs to be annoying, but my daughter seems to enjoy them enough). This CD is just painful to listen to. We put it on in the car, and it is just a bunch of nursery rhymes read/sung in a sing song tone. Although I find the singing to be worse than nails on a chalkboard, that is actually not the worst part. It is the selection of rhymes. I really don't want to read or sing to my child about the old woman in a shoe who "whipped [her children] soundly and put them to bed" or about the "old man who wouldn't say his prayers, I took him by the left leg and threw him down the stairs". Now, I understand that these are actual nursery rhymes, but why would anyone choose to republish them these days? I can't believe that I am the only one who finds these to be inappropriate for children or for anyone for that matter. I just hope I can find a receipt for this awful book.

Solid Assistant for Teaching about Historical Thinking
By TammyJo Eckhart
I use this book in my "Learning Strategies for History" college course that I have taught now for 4 semesters. I replaced the Pugh&Pace book with this one for several reasons but Benjamin's book is not perfect and should be used along with a program that introduces and challenges to practice the skills he discusses.

The book has 5 chapters. The first is a description of history as as subject and how it is used in every day life. The examples of primary and secondary materials is especially useful and this continues throughout the book.

The second chapter covers what I call the "nuts and bolts" of history classes. First the different types of reading you will have to do and briefly how you should approach each type whether it be a legal code, a personal letter, a photograph or a map. Second he too briefly discusses note taking and this is where students will need a lot of very solid examples of the various techniques as well as repeated practice. Finally he discusses exam preparation and taking.

The third chapter looks at different types of writing assignments and how to approach them. Again students will need guides to grammar and practice with each type of assignment.

Chapter four gets into the heart of any upper level history course: research. His end book guide to various books and online resources is very valuable as a starting place. This chapter also illustrates a few ways to take notes from what you are reading and there is a solid guide to citation and bibliography construction.

The final chapter not only discusses how to write a research paper, and to a degree any paper, but also walks the reader through a sample paper. I'm not thrille with endnotes myself nor with including images in one's college paper but still it is better than no example at all. By listing the major points the author is making in the sample paper in the margins I think it is a good guide for students attempting to organize their own writing. Again though students will require practice and feedback.

An essential handbook for college history students.
By A Customer
I like its clear organization which makes the book easy to understand. Its headings are focused and consistent with teaching the important academic skills necessary for college students to be successful in the study of college history. The sections on the net and databases are invaluable. If students wish to do well in their history courses, this is the book for them.

Very Helpful
By MillsStudent
Concise directions on conducting research and writing research papers. Also writing book and film reviews, analytic essays and oral presentations. I found the information on citing in the Chicago Style (Turabian) very helpful. Also helpful were the sample comparative analysis, book review, and research papers after clear instructions on how to do each.

A student's perspective
By Mike Dangler
As one of Andrea's former students, I've had to read this book and use it extensively. Not only did it get me through her class, but every class I had after that (and I've had a large number of English and History classes). If you're looking for a book to help you with MLA style, Professor Lunsford covers everything you can possibly hope to draw info from, including lectures, interviews, and even MUDs online.

Every student needs the Everyday Writer
By Daniel McDonough
This book is an ideal tool for anyone who has to write for school, work, or as a hobby. The easy access tabs and extensive menus help you find what you are looking for quickly and the spiral binding lets you lay the book open while you type. The coverage of the writing process and argumentative writing really set this book apart. Anybody can write up grammar rules or documentation standards, but Lunsford's coverage of writing at the start of the book is wonderful. Buy this book and don't sell it back to the bookstore, this is a keeper. Also, for the teacher that wants one for every student, try "Easywriter" which is the smaller version of this text that only costs about fifteen bucks.

Only Time Will Tell

Jeffrey Archer

The first novel in the Clifton Chronicles, an ambitious new series that tells the story of a family across generations and oceans, from heartbreak to triumph, from #1 New York Times bestselling author Jeffrey Archer

The epic tale of Harry Clifton's life begins in 1920, with the words "I was told that my father was killed in the war." A dock worker in Bristol, Harry never knew his father and expects to continue on at the shipyard, until a remarkable gift wins him a scholarship to an exclusive boys' school, and his life will never be the same again...

As Harry enters into adulthood, he finally learns how his father really died, but the awful truth only leads him to question: Was he even his father? Is he the son of Arthur Clifton, a stevedore, or the firstborn son of a scion of West Country society, whose family owns a shipping line? From the ravages of the Great War and the docks of working-class England to the streets of 1940 New York City and the outbreak of the Second World War, this is a powerful journey that will bring to life one hundred years of history to reveal a family story that neither the reader nor Harry Clifton himself could ever have imagined.

I love a good family saga
By Susan Johnson
I love to read a good family saga. I used to eagerly read Susan Howatch before moving on to Edward Rutherford and the "Forsyte Saga". I love watching a family evolve through the years. This book has the earmarks of a great series.
The story revolves around the Cliftons, a lower class family of dock workers who have a son of exceptional talents, and the Barringtons, a wealthy family whose children seem remarkably decent and grounded. Harry Clifton, the son, has an outstanding voice that offers him a way to better himself through a scholarship to a fine school. Even with his talent, it takes a village to give him the tools to win the scholarship. The book tells the story from various character viewpoints so you can see the help given to young Clifton.
I was so surprised to read the reviews talking about it being the first book in a series like it was a big deal. There are so many series out there that it shouldn't come as such a shock. Lee Child has his Reacher, Bernard Cornwell has his Uhtred and Diana Gabaldon has Jamie and Claire. If you don't like waiting for the next book then wait until the entire series is out. Otherwise just relax and enjoy yourself.
Jeffrey Archer is a skilled story teller. The story moves right along and it is hard to put down. He's like John Grisham- not the most skilled writer but a great story teller. I read this at a fast rate and enoyed every moment of it. I found it to be a fun read.

The title is apropos: this story is just getting started
By Billy Hollis
I picked this book up on a recent trip, during a connection through London, where it's already published. (I don't really have the Kindle edition, I have a softcover, but Amazon doesn't allow reviews for any edition except Kindle as I write this.)

I've read so much fiction in my life that only pretty good writing will hold my interest. This is high quality writing with quite good characterization.

The viewpoint of the story switches among the main characters. Each section for a character starts off with a first-person narrative, and then switches to a traditional third-person narrative for that character.

This results in overlap. It's common to see the same timeline covered from multiple viewpoints. That's tricky writing to pull off, but Archer is a pro, so he does it pretty well.

The era is early twentieth century, between the World Wars and leading up to World War II. It's clear that WWII will play a big part in the entire story, and in fact it begins just as this book ends.

The protagonist is from a lower class family, and the early part of the book covers his attempts to rise via his education.

The plot is fairly predictable. There are a few twists that I didn't see, but the broad outline became clear early on. I was still engaged enough with the characters to want to see the story through.

And that leads to the biggest criticism: as other reviewers have noted, this is just the beginning of a series. The end of the book leaves all of the major plot elements unresolved. So if you like your fiction to contain a story wrapped up neatly in a bow at the end, you probably ought to avoid this one until the story is all published. However, if you can let the unresolved elements sit for a while until the rest is published, then this would be a fine summer reading choice.

Only time will tell... how many years it will take to get the full story!
By Susan Tunis
Remember decades ago when Jeffrey Archer used to write those fantastic epics? Kane & Able, As the Crow Flies; that's what I'm talking about! Here's the good news: His latest novel, Only Time Will Tell harkens back to his glory days. It's the most entertaining thing he's written in years, in my humble opinion. Here's the bad news: What once would have been a juicy epic tale has fallen victim to the publishing industry's current trend of trilogizing. (New word. I coined it.)

Except, except, this is NOT a trilogy--this is, in fact, the first of the FIVE planned novels that will comprise The Clifton Chronicles. And as entertaining as the book is, and I'll get back to that in a moment, this is very annoying. Back in the day, you write an epic, it's 600 or 800 or even 1,000 pages. James Michener did it. James Clavell did it. And, yes, Jeffrey Archer did it. But in the very recent past, some marketing genius realized that you could get readers to pay a lot more for a long book by chopping it into pieces. Maybe pad the text a little, and leave some white space on the pages. What once might have been an 800-page novel is now three 300-page novels. It is the era of the trilogy. And writers don't even have to worry about writing in story arcs to end each segment. No, just end them wherever--or even better, end on cliff-hanger! And don't warn readers that they're only getting a very incomplete portion of the story they signed on to read! And make them wait years to get to the conclusion!

Sorry, was I ranting? It's true that Mr. Archer (Sir Jeffrey?) and his publishers are guilty of most of my complaints above. For instance, this novel ends very abruptly, with no sort of resolution at all, on a cliff-hanger. So, yes, this new trend is really bugging me. I'll move on now.

The series is named the Clifton Chronicles after the protagonist, Harry Clifton. This novel opens in 1919, when Harry is a mere gleam in his father's eye. What follows is roughly the first 20 years of that young man's life. Despite his very modest circumstances, Harry, it turns out, is a gifted fellow. In addition to being very bright, he's a truly exceptional singer. Harry's talents are recognized by several people in a position to nurture them, and so it comes to pass that this dock worker's son has an opportunity for an education and a future his family could not have imagined.

This first book covers Harry's school years--the friends and enemies he makes along the way, the triumphs and setbacks, the secrets and lies, and the many, many melodramas. Archer is at his soapy best, and Harry's story is engaging, eventful, and fast-paced. He's a likable protagonist, a veritable paragon of virtue, as are his mother, friends, educators, and so forth. You'll know the baddies when you see them. Archer's characters are not nuanced. What you see is what you get. But none of this takes away from the fun of the story being told. Only Time Will Tell is not challenging or literary; it's just good old-fashioned escapist fiction. I had a great time reading it. And as much as I grumble, I will be back for part two. Grrr.
