My daughter LOVES this book
By Leigh Johnson
My 4-month-old daughter absolutely LOVES this book/CD set and any other Priddy Book I've ever purchased for her. They are truly the BEST books for young babies (and I've bought MANY), because they capture and hold their attention for longer periods of time, without over-stimulating her. I can already tell she's going to love reading--but maybe I'm just a proud mama. Thanks Priddy Books!

Not one of our favorite Roger Priddy books (surprising, since his books usually ARE favorites in our home)
By Grandma Zizzy
We have several books/items by Roger Priddy on the numerous bookshelves containing the children's library that's continually grown over the seven years I spent babysitting my grandchildren, so I didn't bat an eye when purchasing this one (despite the fact that it was covered in cellophane wrap - I assume to prevent theft of the included CD - which prevented me from actually looking inside prior to purchasing.) The "Look inside" feature on this listing gives you the visual "feel" of the artwork (though you can't appreciate the tactile feel of the nice embossing details, which youngsters enjoy running their hands over), and shows the first several nursery rhymes (Hey Diddle Diddle/Twinkle Twinkle, Little Star/Mary Mary, Quite Contrary/Hickory Dickory Dock/Little Jack Horner).

Unfortunately, I must say that had I known the rest of the nursery rhymes included - and this is strictly a matter of personal preference - I would not have made the purchase. Following Little Jack Horner is The Queen of Hearts ("... The King of Hearts called for the tarts, and beat the Knave full sore...")/Little Bo Beep/Little Miss Muffet/This Little Piggy/Rock-a-bye Baby/Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush/Old Mother Hubbard/Pat-a-cake, Pat-a-cake/Yankee Doodle/Jack and Jill/Humpty Dumpty/Sing a Song of Sixpence/Pussy Cat, Pussy Cat/Baa Baa, Black Sheep/Three Little Kittens/There Was an Old Woman ("... Then whipped them all soundly and put them to bed..."), and Goosey Goosey Gander. These are TRADITIONAL, unfiltered and NOT watered down versions of these rhymes, and if you're unfamiliar with Goosey, here are the words: "Goosey Goosey Gander, whither shall I wander? Upstairs and downstairs and in my lady's chamber. There I met an old man who would not say his prayers, I took him by the left leg and threw him down the stairs."

There is certainly something to be said for traditional, classic literature, and (as an adult) discovering the history of a book or rhyme and the times during which they were written, but I must admit that I didn't want my young and impressionable grandsons worrying about ever meeting up with that nasty old woman in the shoe, or to imagine for a second that it's "okay" to beat someone for stealing some tarts, or to throw someone down the stairs for not saying their prayers. Youngsters for whom this book was intended are too young to view things in historical context, and are pretty literal in their mental translations (and their vivid imaginations!) I mean, I'm the type of person who - when singing "Rock-a-bye Baby" to my grandsons - has always substituted "Grandma will catch you, cradle and all!" for "Down will come baby, cradle and all." There are certainly literary purists who will feel differently about such "embellishments". You should at least be aware of the contents prior to a purchase.

As for the CD, I suppose (since Mr. Priddy hails from London) I shouldn't be surprised that the woman singing the nursery songs has an English accent (think Julie Andrews in Mary Poppins) - certainly not something I see as a negative (especially since the Mary Poppins soundtrack is included in our collection of children's CDs!), but something that did come as somewhat of a surprise nonetheless. Most of our children's CDs are sung by children with typically American accents (though I myself am not sure what I mean by "American", considering the melting pot that America is and the wonderful variety of people with various ancestral and regional dialects who call it "home"!)

Overall, this is a typically very sturdy board book with child-attractive, textured artwork (and you don't see illustrations of the Knave being beaten, a baby in a cradle falling, children being whipped or an old man being thrown down stairs), the voice on the CD is pleasant enough, but these just aren't nursery rhymes I would've chosen for my grandkids, and it's not a book that's seen much action in our house. I would've used the (2006 copyright date's imprinted US price of) $12.95 on a different book, had I known the contents in advance.

This one is going back to the store or the recycling bin
By OCMomMD
I usually do not write reviews, but this book is so awful, I felt compelled to share. I am shocked that it gets any good reviews. We received this as a gift for our 1 year old daughter. We have another book/cd set from this series, which was Ok (I found the songs to be annoying, but my daughter seems to enjoy them enough). This CD is just painful to listen to. We put it on in the car, and it is just a bunch of nursery rhymes read/sung in a sing song tone. Although I find the singing to be worse than nails on a chalkboard, that is actually not the worst part. It is the selection of rhymes. I really don't want to read or sing to my child about the old woman in a shoe who "whipped [her children] soundly and put them to bed" or about the "old man who wouldn't say his prayers, I took him by the left leg and threw him down the stairs". Now, I understand that these are actual nursery rhymes, but why would anyone choose to republish them these days? I can't believe that I am the only one who finds these to be inappropriate for children or for anyone for that matter. I just hope I can find a receipt for this awful book.
