From Publishers Weekly
This doctor is a bit of a celebrity herself: the first military woman in U.S. history to be appointed White House doctor, the first female director of the White House medical unit, and the first Filipino-American to become a navy rear admiral. And though Mariano humbly bows to the bigger-than-life presidents—George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton—she cared for during eight years in Washington, it's her journey that's so remarkable. Having begun life in 1955 as the daughter of a U.S. Navy steward in the Philippines, she was appointed a White House physician by the navy in 1992, and her mettle was thoroughly tested during medical emergencies—and political storms. Whether helping to treat Bush's skin cancer or dispensing a Band-Aid on the golf course, accompanying the president on overseas trips or performing a Heimlich maneuver on a choking guest at a holiday gala, Mariano always kept her cool and her sense of humor, which she retains in this unusual inside look at the White House. 8 pages of color photos. Sweet Dreams

1.
I never slept with the president. I did sleep with the former president. In fact, I slept with three of them, all at once, on Air Force One. Actually, it was more like a slumber party, which sounds even more bizarre. This all started on a very typical White House day that ended up as anything but typical.
“Hey, Doc, we’ve got a tourist down in the State Dining Room.”
I looked up from my computer on the mahogany desk in my office on the ground floor of the White House. The tall dark-haired man standing in my doorway was a Uniformed Division officer of the Secret Ser vice. I recognized the guard’s face, but his first name escaped me. Even after seven years at the White House, I couldn’t remember the names of all the guards who sat in a post outside my office, the doctor’s office, across the hallway from the president’s private elevator.
“Do you want me to call over to the clinic for the duty nurse to respond?” he asked tentatively.
I stood up, clipped my Secret Ser vice radio to my belt, and inserted my earpiece as I walked around the desk, grabbing the AED, the automated external defibrillator, and my medical bag along the way. “He can back me up, but presidents, visiting dignitaries, kitchen help, and . . . tourists get the same treatment.”
Taking care of an ill or injured tourist is one of the first duties a White House physician assumes, even before meeting the first patient, the president of the United States. It was one of the first things I learned to do after arriving at the White House in 1992 as the Navy physician to the White House. It wasn’t the first time I had taken care of someone who had passed out. Years of working as a Navy doctor in emergency rooms, clinics, teaching hospitals, and onboard a destroyer tender in the Pacific made me an expert in critical care. What was special this time was the setting: the grandeur and elegance of the State Dining Room of the White House.
Please don’t let anyone die on my watch, I prayed as we rapidly ascended the marble staircase to the State Floor. The medical bag and defibrillator I was carrying were quite heavy. This was going to be my workout for the day: stair climbing and lifting medical bags. No chance for a run on the Mall. I was scheduled to leave in one hour with the president and first lady for an overseas trip.
I entered the State Dining Room where the line of tourists weaves its way from one end of the room to the other. A gold cordon separates them from the formal dining table in the center of the room, resplendent with a large floral centerpiece, with the chandeliers glittering overhead. The fallen tourist was an elderly, frail woman sitting in a chair in the corner of the room. A woman guard stood beside her. The Secret Ser vice first-aid and trauma—FAT—kit was already on the scene, and the guard was waiting for my cue to administer oxygen. I squatted down beside the woman, looking at her eye to eye. She was approximately eighty years old, wearing glasses, hearing aids, and was sweating profusely. I took her hand in mine and squeezed it gently. It was cold and clammy. My index and third fingers planted themselves on her radial pulse, which was rapid and strong, not thready. I began my routine.
“Hello, ma’am. I’m the White House doctor. How are you feeling?”
She looked at me and blinked. “Are you the nurse?” she drawled. Her voice was soft, sweet, and fresh from West Virginia.
I smiled. “No, ma’am. I’m the doctor, and I’m here to help you. Are you having any chest pain?”
She squinted behind her glasses. “You’re not the nurse?” She examined me closely, trying to comprehend how someone who looks like Connie Chung could be a White House doctor. I suppressed the urge to tell her, “Welcome to the Clinton White House,” as I wrapped a blood pressure cuff around her arm.
“Ma’am, are you a diabetic?” I asked as I pumped the blood pressure cuff.
“No, no diabetes.”
Her blood pressure was 110/60 and her pulse was 80 and regular. Respirations were 20, unlabored. I looked up to a woman in her fifties standing behind the chair, who had identified herself as the daughter of the elderly tourist. “Does your mother take any medications for blood pressure, diabetes, or heart disease?”
She shook her head. “No. No medications at all.”
“What happened to her this morning?” I asked.
“She was so excited about coming to see the White House that she skipped breakfast. Then we waited in line for an hour. By the time we got upstairs, she said she was sleepy and then she broke out in a sweat.”
I looked at the guard and before I could say “OJ please,” a White House usher had brought a glass of fresh orange juice on a silver tray.
“Ma’am, we’re going to give you a sip of orange juice, okay?”
She nodded, accepting the glass and drinking it quickly. She patted her lips with a napkin the usher had handed her. She then noticed the embossed gold presidential seal on the napkin, and placed it surreptitiously in her pocket.
By now the White House nurse on duty had arrived. It was tall, brown-haired, all-American Jim Hosack carrying his medical bag. He hunched down beside me, looking guilty, and confessed in a hushed tone, “Sorry, Captain, I was delayed. We were swamped in the clinic.”
“I think our patient is going to be okay,” I reassured him. “She’s a little hypoglycemic. Blood pressure and pulse are stable. I’m going to turn her over to you.”
Suddenly, my radio blared—I had taken out my earpiece to attend to my patient. “All points on Oscar . . . Eagle moving . . .” Eagle was the Secret Ser vice code name for President Bill Clinton. Oscar was the name of the Secret Ser vice frequency. The voice was one of the president’s agents reporting Bill Clinton’s movements on the White House compound.
Jim looked up at me. “The funeral?”
I nodded. Jim tentatively asked, “With all the presidents?” I smiled. I could see intimidation in his eyes. That was why I was taking Vince Starks, the senior White House nurse, with me. He understood: they were just patients. As I walked away, I could hear Jim introduce himself to our elderly patient.
“Oh, so you’re the doctor?”
As I hurried back to my office, I checked my watch. It was twenty minutes before we were to lift from the South Lawn on Marine One. The helicopter had not even arrived. Then I heard over my radio, “Eagle moving.” “Eagle moving” meant Eagle was on the move, going somewhere. But where? “Eagle moving to the residence,” someone said over the radio, as though he had heard my question.
I now heard the muffled sound of Marine One’s rotors as it touched down on the South Lawn. My ride had arrived. The he licop ter would shortly take the president to Andrews Air Force Base. He was preparing to depart the White House and I, his physician, was to accompany him. As I approached my office, I asked the Secret Ser vice agents across the hallway near the president’s elevator, “What gives? Are we going early?” They smiled and shrugged their shoulders; so much for Secret Ser vice intelligence.
I stepped into my office, wondering how soon before we would depart to Andrews. The president could be upstairs for a minute or he could decide to leave in an hour. The Secret Ser vice doesn’t know. How could I have not predicted that President Clinton would be true to form: predictably unpredictable!
But I had my own spy network: the president’s Filipino valets. I went to my computer and text-paged Master Chief Joe Fama, one of the president’s valets, with the message, “When is departure? Doc M.”
No sooner had I struck the send key when my phone rang. I picked it up and it was Joe: “Doc, POTUS wants to leave in ten minutes,” he announced, from POTUS’s (President of the United States) lips to Joe’s ears. The president’s valet was among the most trusted and reliable of sources. Everyone at the White House knew it. Even Ken Starr knew it.
I walked out into the hallway, grinning like Socks the cat because I now had something that everyone on the eighteen acres of the White House coveted: the scoop. The military aide on duty had just arrived in the hallway now. We called him (or her) the “mil aide.” One is assigned each day to follow the president and carries the black briefcase called the “football” that contains the nuclear codes.
The mil aide on duty today would also be accompanying the president on our overseas trip. He was in full dress uniform, perspiring and breathing rapidly. The military aide was not cool; he didn’t have the scoop. I walked over to him. He greeted me formally, “Hello, Captain Mariano.”
I smiled back and tested him. “Any word about departure?”
He wiped his brow with a white handkerchief and then answered, “No, ma’am.”
“Oh,” I remarked. “The president’s valet just called me and said that POTUS wants to leave in ten minutes.” The mil aide’s mood brightened when he realized that I had just given him the scoop. You’ve got to have the scoop to be in the loop. And being in the loop is something military aides crave.
“Per the valet, POTUS wants to depart in ten minutes,” he announced into his radio with an air of authority. The Secret Ser vice, White House communications, Marine One pi lots, and military personnel who monitor the Secret Ser vice frequency heard the announcement. The Secret Ser vice agents standing in the hallway beside us gave the mil aide the thumbs-up. The approval went to his sweaty head, and he began to strut around like he was the man. Then he...

Great read!
By Andrew
While I normally read Sci-Fi or other fiction, I do occasionally enjoy a biography or other non-fiction work. This book was an easy read for me for several reasons. I live in the Washington suburbs and like a lot of people here tend to follow politics closely. I also know Connie and her first husband and was quite close to them long before she became the White House Doctor. They had moved away after Connie's graduation from Med School here as they were from California originally. When the moved back to the area, I think we got together once. At the time, I knew they were busy, but now I see just how busy they were and why.

I also always enjoy a true success story and that is what this is, an amazing success story. I feel obligated to comment on another review that was submitted. I would have bet money on what I thought Connie's political leanings were back when I knew her and obviously would probably have been wrong. But I think the book is pretty clear that she did not let that influence her job. I know that she was very close to the elder Bushes as well as the Clintons, but it was under the Clintons that her role expanded, so I don't find it strange that she would have strong feelings regarding the Clintons. Plus, she was with the Clintons for two full terms, and only part of one term with George H. W. Bush.

I thought the tales of her youth and the culture she came from were fascinating and had never heard any of that part of the story. For anyone who enjoys reading about success and sacrifice and perhaps some backroom drama in the highest office of the land, the book is definitely worth reading. There is no political agenda in the book.

Unique, Inspiring and Honest Story
By Sue Ellen Allen
Let's see, a young girl from the Philippines, daughter of a Navy steward, with many, many strikes against her, grows up to be The Doctor in the White House AND an Admiral, and some people think her book is lacking in humility. On the contrary, she is an example that the impossible IS possible, even in a man's world. This unique memoir gives us an unusual look inside the White House that we would otherwise not have. When I met her at a woman's conference where we were both on the program, I found her to be charming, self-deprecating, and very honest about the cost of success for her and other women who seek that level of responsibility and authority. She could have glossed over it and, in seeming to make it perfect, left a lot of young women with the wrong idea. She didn't succeed in business or academia, she succeeded in the Navy and the world of medicine, both very male dominated worlds. Now, despite her successful and busy medical practice, she speaks to women's groups to impact lives because she cares. I'm sorry her critics didn't get that message. Her book is inspirational, as is she.

A God Who Hates: The Courageous Woman Who Inflamed the Muslim World Speaks Out Against the Evils of Islam, by Wafa Sultan

On Feb. 21, 2006, the Syrian-born and raised Wafa Sultan gave one of the most provocative interviews ever given by a Muslim woman on the Al Jazeera network. In the middle of the interview she told her male Muslim interviewer that it was her turn to speak. And, she did. She told him to "shut up". This simple, yet radical, act of a Muslim woman asserting herself in the face of a Muslim man, catapulted her to fame. Now, for the first time, Wafa Sultan tells her story and airs her provocative views in a book that pulls no punches in looking clearly at Islam and the threat it poses for the rest of the world. Her viewpoint and opinions were hard won: As an intelligent young girl who would someday become a psychiatrist, she grew up in Syria under the thumb of a culture ruled by a god who hates women and all they represent. It is from this kernel of female hatred at the heart of Islam that Wafa Sultan builds her case against the mullahs and their followers bent on destroying the West. A God Who Hates is a fiery book that will remind readers why, even at a time when we are reaching out to others, we must be ever-vigilant about the threat Islam poses towards the West.

Review

“An absorbing book, full of Dickensian details.” ―Forbes

“Wafa Sultan is a great heroine of our times, willing to risk everything to stand up to these immense evils when most people are too fainthearted or politically correct to do so. A God Who Hates should be read closely and studied by the President, European leaders, and all Western policymakers and opinion-shapers -- before it is too late.” ―Robert Spencer, author of the New York Times bestsellers The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam (and the Crusades) and The Truth About Muhammad

“Wafa Sultan experienced firsthand the immense contempt of human dignity Islam harbours, and the unimaginable cruelty Muslim women have to endure on a daily basis, resulting from it. Her compelling book is a touching life story filled with bone chilling examples of what it is like to live in a society that is ruled by Islam and how valuable our Western freedom truly is. It is because brave women like Wafa Sultan have the courage to speak out against this doctrine of hate that we in the West have been forewarned. I hope that everyone reads this book and takes note of the important message it contains. We must defend our precious liberties, our Western freedom and never give in to Islam.” ―Geert Wilders, member of the Dutch Parliament and leader of the Party for Freedom

“With rare courage and candor, Wafa Sultan throws open the shuttered windows on Islam, letting clean, bright sunshine pour into its darkest corners to illuminate Islam from the inside. This is where she lived it, confronted it, and ultimately rejected its sacralized teachings--on women, on marriage, on children, on Christians, on Jews, on freedom of conscience, on war, on world domination--as a humanity-warping pathology based on hate and fear. Such is the fascinating psychological analysis that is the underpinning achievement of A God Who Hates: With unique insight and unstinting compassion, Wafa Sultan, a trained psychiatrist, employs her expertise to put Islam on the couch. The results of her analysis will startle, engage, deepen and transform every reader's understanding of Islam forever.” ―Diana West, author of The Death of the Grown-Up: How America's Arrested Development is Bringing Down Western Civilization

“Wafa Sultan paints a scorching, unforgettable portrait of Syrian Muslim society, especially the degradation of its women, and lyrically appreciates her adopted American homeland, which she calls "the land of dreams." But she also worries that Middle East customs are encroaching on the West and writes with passion to awaken Americans to a menace they barely recognize, much less fear.” ―Daniel Pipes, Director, Middle East Forum

“Like thousands of others, I first encountered Wafa Sultan on a stunning YouTube video. Here was a woman on Al-Jazeer a TV, eloquently and courageously defending Western civilization, individualism and reason against the barbarity and mysticism of radical Islam. Her performance was mesmerizing. She was articulate, self-confident, and outspoken. She stunned the audience, the interviewer and the pathetically out-matched Imam who opposed her. Now Wafa Sultan has written her life story in this powerful book. She exposes the ugliness that is Muslim society in theMiddle East, while unapologetically defending the Western values she adopted when rejecting the religion of Islam. If you want to understand this courageous woman, who continues to fight for her beliefs in spite of death threats, and to understand her views on the conflict between Islam and the West, this is a must read.” ―Yaron Brook, Ph.D., President and Executive Director, The Ayn Rand Institute

A Must Read Book!
By David Cashin
I have just completed my reading of Wafa Sultan's book, "A God Who Hates". This is a must read book! Many are familiar with her brilliant debate with a Saudi Sheikh on al jazeera television in which she excoriated the coercive violence endemic to the Muslim world. Here she reviews the sources and foundations of that worldview that creates such pathologies. Many accuse her of hating. What I found in her book was a passionate love for Muslims and a desire to open their minds to escape from the oppression that is endemic to Islam...Period. This is a woman who has received hundreds of death threats for simply telling the truth as she experienced it. Having just completed my own careful reading of the Qur'an using Muslim commentaries I affirm that her picture of the message pervasive in the Qur'an is absolutely accurate. She devastates the usual arguments brought against so-called "cherry-picking" of negative things in the Qur'an. Most importantly, she shows, with the acumen of a trained doctor, the results of a consistent application of this world-view to children and adults. The results are devastating. The closer you get to orthodox Arabic Islam, the worse it gets. Having lived in Muslim countries for 11 years I found myself over and over saying, "wow, for the first time I have an explanation for the behaviors that I saw". This is a book that I am going to buy 50 copies of and give to friends, especially Muslim friends. They may become angry, but some will quietly admit, this is the problem. The problem of the Muslim world is not its lack of application of Islam. The problem of the Muslim world is Islam...period. We need to have the love, courage and compassion to give Muslims an opportunity to consider an insider's critique of their own system. Growth only comes through challenging long established assumptions. Doubt is not a "shaytan". In fact, when extreme oppression is established, it is a "word" from God and a "spirit" from God. That God is love, not hate. Thank you, Wafa, for your great courage! You have inspired me to love my Muslim friends enough to challenge their assumptions.

A God who Hates
By Barry Webb
From a literary standpoint, this book does have a few flaws, however its message is so important that I could not give it anything buy 5 stars. The Arab proverbs and jokes that she includes to illustrate the Muslim Arab mind-set are more than worth the price of the book by themselves. One fault she has is that she tends to repeat herself rather often. Another minor point is that though she believes she has liberated herself from the Islamic culture she was brought up in, it still influences her thinking in places. For example, throughout the book she makes the claim that it was the pre-Islamic Arid desert Bedu culture of Arabia that produced and caused the evils of Islam. That is an unfair (and untrue) statement and is a direct result of Islamic propaganda which denigrates pre-Islamic Arabia calling it the Jahiliyyah (or age of ignorance). Nothing could be further from the truth. The traditional Bedu raiding culture, though it did exist, was not as vile as she made it out to be. In their raids against each other there was very little taking of life out of fear of tha'ir, or blood revenge. It was only when Islam turned these raids outward against "others" that the raiding culture took on a more deadly form. Furthermore, pre-Islamic Arabia was not all Bedu culture. There were many cities, empires, and high civilizations in pre-Islamic Arabia that rivaled those in the so-called fertile crescent. Jews, Gnostic Christians, Orthodox and Catholic Christains, and pagan Arabs of all sorts all co-existed in pre-Islamic Arabia, and there was a great deal of intellectual ferment. The status of women was much higher than in surrounding areas (such as Greece and Rome for example), as women could become rulers of states (history counts at least 42 that we know of), Goddesses, or owners of companies (Muhammad's first wife for example). In fact the chivalry code of Europe's Middle Ages was heavily influenced by pre-Islamic Arabic poetry brought to Spain by the Arabs. Unfortunately all of this came to an end with the advent of Islam. In other words, it wasn't Arabia's so-called "intellectual desert" that created Islam, it was Islam that turned Arabia into an "intellectual desert." Islam has trashed every country it has taken over, and none more so that Arabia. In a bit of a self-contradiction, Ms. Sultan even admits as much on page 205 where she says "Islam subjugated the cultures of all the peoples it afflicted, but it eradicated all traces of indigenous Arab culture more thoroughly than those of any other." All-in-all, though, this book is a must read for anybody interested in the Middle East, Islam, Terrorism, the fate of the west and/or women's rights.

Wish Muslims would read this book without denial and defensiveness
By Parviz
Under Islamic Sharia Laws and the teachings of Muhammad and Quran, atrocities has been committed against many over the centuries . Since 9/11 these acts, specially towards women, honor killings, rapes, stoning, murders and slavery have been noticed more. Between 1979, the beginning of the Iranian Revolution and formation of the Islamic Republic Of Iran till 1997, some 1500 Iranian women have been hanged, some as young as 10 years old. Thanks to the writings of brave women like Wafa Sultan, Brigitte Gabriel, Nonie Darwish and Ayaan Hirsi Ali, who have put their lives on the line by pouring their gut wrenching stories out in the open, about their personal lives under Islam, the western world seems to be waking up, howbeit still not fully. Then we read the reviews of Sultan's book by 2 folks on this space by the name of, you guessed it, Muhammad, who much in vain and with total hypocrisy call her unqualified for telling the truth about Islam's treatment of women. They attempt to discredit Dr. Sultan simply because she hasn't been educated in " theology of Islam ". What a farce. What a theology !

How can these people live with themselves for denying what is so obvious to the entire world except to those who follow such a dark and hateful religion.

" A God Who Hates " must be read by all curious minds, as well as a book which will show the reader as why Islam is the way it is, by showing who Muhammad really was. "Understanding Muhammad, A Psychobiography" By: Ali Sina

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Sherrilyn Kenyon comes the next thrilling installment in her blockbuster Dark-Hunter series

The Mayans aren't the only ones with a 2012 prophecy…

Long before recorded history, there was a Keetoowah warrior so feared that everyone trembled before his wrath. Only a brutal betrayal by the one closest to him could defeat him. But not even death was the end of a man so strong.

The Time Untime approaches…

Kateri Avani has been plagued her entire life with dreams she doesn't understand. Images of places she's never been and of a man she's never seen. Her quest for answers has driven her to Las Vegas where she hopes to finally silence the demons in her mind.

What she never anticipates is coming face to face with the warrior who has haunted her her entire life. One who belongs to a world the scientist in her refuses to believe is real.

Ren Waya came back from the dead to keep the prophecy he began from coming true and ending the world. For thousands of years, he has fought the same evil that once possessed him. But now that evil has found the one person he can't fight. The one person who, against his will, holds the most sacred part of him.

His heart.

But if he doesn't kill Kateri, the deadliest of evils will reemerge and destroy everyone else on the planet. It was a sacrifice he made once.

Will he be able to make it again?

“Award-winning Holter Graham has performed the series for a number of years and is a perfect match for the material, distinctly conveying a wide range of voices.” – Library Journal

From the Back Cover

#1 New York Times bestselling author Sherrilyn Kenyon returns to the breathtaking world of the Dark-Hunters―one in which an ancient prophecy is finally coming to life.

For as long as she has lived, Kateri Avani has been plagued with dreams she doesn't understand. Images of places she's never been and of a man she's never met. In spite of her background, she refuses to believe in anything supernatural. But it's hard to deny something when it comes and kicks in your front door, and brings you face to face with the warrior who has haunted you your entire life…

"[A] publishing phenomenon…[Sherrilyn Kenyon is] the reigning queen of the wildly successful paranormal scene."―Publishers Weekly

Ren Waya came back from the dead to help prevent a devastating prophecy from coming true―and to fight an evil that once possessed him. An evil that's blood related…Now, the last thing he wants is to be responsible for someone else. Ever. Even if he doesn't make sure Kateri fulfills her role, time itself will come undone. Still, it's hard to help someone when you know she is either the key to your ultimate salvation...or your utter destruction.

3.5 Stars
By Jen (Red Hot Books)
Time Untime is sort-of a companion piece to Retribution. If you enjoyed that one, you'll probably like this one. The thing is, Retribution was one of my least favorite books in the Dark Hunter series. I think I have reached maximum capacity on large-scale additional mythology in this already complicated universe. I felt very disconnected to the Native American elements featured so heavily in that book and I knew that same thread would continue into this one.

Some of the problems I had with Retribution did pop up again here. But not all of them. The Native American mythology is central to the story, but the familiar Greek pantheon is woven in. Add to that a healthy dose of familiar favorites, like Acheron, Nick, Uriel, Sundown and Sasha, and it made it much more palatable.

The hero of the story is Ren, who we got to know during Sundown's book. He is one of those trademark Kenyon tortured heroes. Descended from a goddess and thrust into the care of the father who never wanted him, Ren was an outcast among his people. He was ridiculed and ostracized for his lineage, his stutter, and anything else that made him different. His back story was very reminiscent of Acheron's. The degree of torture was nowhere near the same, but they were both rejected for the circumstances of their birth, while their over-entitled brothers were groomed as princes.

When a woman finally showed Ren some attention, she turned out to be an agent for evil, leading him down the wrong path. He made Bad Choices and while possessed by The Grizzly Spirit, he was an evil and deadly weapon. Now, thousands of years later, he is still trying to right the wrongs of his past. Made immortal by Artemis, he's had plenty of time to try, but he has lived a solitary existence focused on his duties as a Dark Hunter. All of that changes when he meets Kateri.

The latest in a line of Native American women with mystical powers, Teri is tasked with keeping closed a portal between humanity and hell dimensions. She never really believed the fanciful stories her grandmother told her as a child, but once a slew of bad guys started coming for her, she realized just how wrong she was to disbelieve. Thankfully, Ren and a handful of other Dark Hunters come to her aid, both to protect her and help her with her mission. That's when she recognizes Ren as the man she has had visions of since her childhood.

The visions of Ren continue as she gets to know him better, giving her a keen insight into his past and his true character. She falls for him quickly, wanting to right the wrongs done to him his whole life. This is where the story really gets that old, familiar feel. The one where the hero is shocked that someone so good and pure and beautiful could ever love someone as wretched as him. Where he is stunned when she looks at him "like he mattered." Kenyon fans know what I'm talking about. On one hand, it's a little overdone. On the other, it's what Kenyon does best. It's hard not to root for such a underdog... to want to witness him learning his own worth.

In the end, it was a mixed bag of the old and the new. I liked it better than Retribution. It's kind of like an old, warm sweater you pull out of your closet every autumn. Not pulse pounding or flashy, but familiar and comfortable.

Yawn again
By Miranda731
Glad I borrowed this from the library instead of buying it. As a long-time D-H fan I was looking forward to reading this. But I found myself flipping pages, going from front to back & back again, trying to find something that would get me interested in continuing. After years of being used to Greek myth, Atlantean, and some Celtic -- it became confusing trying to integrate the Native American as well as Maya. The names alone are confusing, and hard to remember. Then there's the reincarnation, mortals, gods, demons, immortals. It just seemed like a hodgepodge. The only redeeming qualities of this book are the appearance of Acheron, Alexion, Urian, Sundown, Sunshine, Talon, Sasha, and even Nick; what a relief to have familiar names and characters.

I understand that a lot of this is part of Sherri's heritage, and thus dear to her heart. But I'm afraid she failed in her efforts to bring it into my heart the way her previous books did.

I look forward to reading Styxx book next year, that sounds more in line with what we are used to reading. And just when do we get back to Noir, or Savitar for that matter?

Unreadable
By brandyfinegirl
I still want to be a fan of this series. It was my most favorite for such a long time. I drove 5 hours out of my way and took a day off work just to meet Ms. Kenyon at a book signing. I really feel like (especially with this and Retribution) the series has gone off the deep end. While I appreciate Ms. Kenyon trying to bring in a new 'pantheon' with the Native Americans, it's just not working. I myself am Native American (part Cherokee, part Wyandotte) and I don't find it interesting at all. In fact, I giggle everytime I see Choo-Co-Lah-Tah's name. Was she staring at a Hershey bar when she came up with that one? I thought after Acheron we were suppose to be on Jaden's Arc of the story and when we were done w/ that, then Savitar's Arc. Where is Jaden in all this? Where is Savitar? A little mention of Nick here and there is not enough, either since he is suppose to be playing such a great part. I really feel like with these last few books (No Mercy included) she has gone WAY out there and may never return. I did, however, enjoy the last Dream Hunter book (The Guardian) that came out last year. I thought after that book that maybe we were returning to where we needed to be.....but no. I sincerely hope that we're done with all this nonsense and the next book in the series gets back to Jaden/Savitar/Nick. Back to New Orleans, hopefully. In the meantime, I sure am glad I didn't get that Dark Hunter tattoo I was thinking about. Also glad I got this from the library instead of paying for it.

Good intro text; watch out for edition number
By Jenny H
Good intro to the principles of critical thinking. It was a little weird for me to have this book assigned in grad school; I remember it from my daughter's college freshman year.

New editions keep the readings current, but that means you have to pay attention to the edition number if you want (or your prof wants) a particular edition. Many vendors, Amazon and Amazon Marketplace included, don't post it clearly, if at all.

(Previewing my review, I see I mis-clicked and gave it 5 stars. I meant to hit 4, because it's so draggingly introductory at times.)

Many students keep this book
By Amy Sterling Casil
Like Rufo, I have also taught college English since 1999. I have used Current Issues & Enduring Questions since 2000 or so. This book helps students learn needed concepts and skills much more than (hate to say it), literature-based readers. It is so well-designed and thought-out, and each edition, having now used three, grows stronger. That's from a teacher's perspective. I find students engaged, their work is fantastic, and they read things that should be part of anyone's education - then they can synthesize these readings with their experience and growth. Yes, students really do get engaged, and really do keep this book. That is a real "first" for me, in terms of a "college English text." This is my "good deed" of the day. Be sure to order with enough time in advance to receive your book as you order it for your classes (especially used versions).

Good, solid textbook for Freshman Composition II
By Jonathon York
Teaching college English since 1999, I've used _Current Issues and Enduring Questions_ since the 7th edition. It has always been a good, solid textbook for teaching Freshman Composition II (called ENGL 1302 in Texas) as an issues-based argumentative essays and research paper class. It is flexible enough a text for any teacher to craft his/her class. However, if you're used to teaching ENGL 1302 as a survey to Literature class, this isn't the text for you.

The only problem I have with it is the skimpyness of some of the MLA style instruction, but that's par for the course in Comp II books that have extensive readings.

Set in 1903, Bowen's engaging 10th Molly Murphy mystery (after 2010's The Last Illusion) finds the maverick New York City PI at a major personal turning point. Her impending marriage to Capt. Daniel Sullivan of the NYPD will, at his insistence, mark an end to her sleuthing career, but she can't resist taking on one last case. After a powerful and affluent Chinatown businessman, Lee Sing Tai, asks her to locate a missing piece of valuable jade jewelry, Murphy soon ascertains that the less than forthcoming Lee really wants her to trace the missing bride he recently purchased in China. Searching for Lee's bride while keeping her activities a secret from her fiancé is a considerable challenge for Molly, who also ends up with a murder to solve. Molly's compassion and pluck should attract more readers to this consistently solid historical series. (Mar.)

From Booklist
Just weeks before she is to marry New York police captain Daniel Sullivan in 1903, private investigator Molly Murphy leaves the sewing of her trousseau in the capable hands of her future mother-in-law (who bemoans Mollys woeful stitchery skills) and takes on one last case, having promised Daniel shed stop working once theyve wed. Powerful Chinatown businessman Lee Sing Tai hires Molly to find his missing bride, a commission she is loath to fulfill upon learning that the bride is actually a concubine obtained from China solely to give Lee (whose holdings include brothels and opium dens) a son and heir. When Lee is found dead after a fall from his rooftop, Molly is relieved of her obligation. But when the death is ruled a murder, initially raising the possibility of tong wars, the bridebeing sheltered by Mollybecomes a prime suspect. The tenth entry (after The Last Illusion, 2010) in this engaging, award-winning series captures early-twentieth-century New York; touches on the immigrant experience during that era; and brings the case to a satisfying conclusion, leaving open the equally compelling mystery of what lies ahead for the independent-minded Molly. --Michele Leber

Bless the Molly Murphy Mysteries
By Ross A. Hugovidal
Welcome back to one of the finest authors of the traditional/cozy style mystery now writing. The award-winning Bowen's Molly Murphy historical mystery series is unmatched in painting a textured, meticulous portrait of turn-of-the-century New York City, and especially the immigrant communities who made it tick. Her sleuth, the "feisty" Molly Murphy is a nuanced character any modern reader can get behind, while reveling in the details of Old New York. And this page-turner delivers, as Bless the Bride pits Molly against the Tong, yep the Tong, while posing the question, "Is Molly meant for matrimony?" Without giving anything away, Bowen appears poised to take the series in an entirely new direction, and I for one am buying a trolley ticket for the ride.

Molly Fits in a Case Before She Marries
By Mark Baker - Carstairs Considers
It's just a matter of weeks before Molly Murphy is to marry Daniel Sullivan, and she is supposed to be spending time with Daniel's mother in Westchester County working on her wedding dress. But she can't resist coming back to New York City when her dear friends Sid and Gus promise to throw a wedding party for her.

She's also tempted by the prospect of taking on one last case. Lee Sing Tai, a powerful man in Chinatown, wants Molly to find something of value that has gone missing. While the task looks impossible on the surface, she digs in and actually manages to make some progress. But the more progress she makes, the more she begins to regret taking this case. Is there a way she can get out of it, especially after a murder takes place?

It's hard to believe this is the 10th book in this historical series. I just can't believe I've been reading them that long. Don't worry about the series losing its spark, however. The world of 1903 New York city is once again brought o vivid life.

The story was so compelling that I had a hard time putting the book down because I had to know how Molly would get herself out of this predicament. Yet it all comes together in a satisfying climax. In fact, the last 10 pages had me smiling the entire time.

Sid and Gus make more than a brief appearance, and it was great to see more of them. And Molly is growing both in deductive skills but also as a person who thinks about her actions. Okay, so she usually thinks about things after the fact, but even that is a step forward for her.

I loved every page of this novel. Fortunately, the next is already being written. Now I just have to wait until it actually gets published.

strong historical mystery
By A Customer
In 1903, the marriage between private investigator Molly Murphy and NYPD Captain Daniel Sullivan is coming soon. He expects her to behave like a wife and not a detective; his mom also implores her to act accordingly. Shockingly Molly seems to acquiesce.

Wealthy Chinese businessman Lee Sing Tai asks Molly to help him find a missing valuable jade. Although she believes her client is omitting much of the story, she agrees as she rationalizes her promise to no longer sleuth begins after the marriage though she hides her activity from Daniel. Molly thinks Lee is actually seeking his missing bride who ran away. However, she has no idea how a Chinese female who does not speak English hides in plain sight in New York when Asian women are not allowed outside without a chaperone. As Molly searches for the young runaway, she fears she will bring further harm to the bride Lee bought in and brought from China.

This is a strong entry in one of the best historical mystery series on the market. The investigation is top rate as Molly goes from searching for a runaway bride that has her pondering the parallels to her own fate as a wife in which she is expected to give up her freedom to detect. As the heroine conceals her case from her fiancé while wondering whether marriage means being The Last Illusion living In a Gilded Cage, her case turns lethal. Rhys Bowen provides a great early twentieth century Molly Murphy mystery.

we are really enjoying this book and it feels well bound so I think it will be around for a while. The handle on the top means my 15 month old son picks it up easily and brings it to me play with him. He enjoys sliding the windows back and forth and points to the objects he knows. I am sure it will be a part of his learning for a long time to come.

Beautiful picturs, a little too much repitition...
By Lauren
The photos and colors are beautiful in the book and my daughter (20 months) loves it, but my only complaint is that it's a little redundant. On the first page there is are separate pictures of a "chick," "ducklings," and a "gosling" the chick looks a little different because of the beak but the pictures of the other animals are too similar. On the second page there is a horse and pony- which look nearly identical since the horse shows the whole animal and the pony is just a headshot, and a goose and a duck and with the pictures they chose they look like the same animal. Since this book is aimed at babies and pre-schooled aged kids I think it would have been better with a little more diversity. My daughter sees there are three "horseys" in the book when she's really looking at a "foal," "horse" and a pony" and she seems to think there are six or seven "duckies" in the book although they're they're really just all the birds I mentioned earlier. It would have at least made more sense to put the baby animals next to the adult animals to see a comparison. My intention isn't to nitpick, but the book just came across to me as poorly conceptualized.

Great book for learning animals
By Martha Reader
This book is better than most animal books for kids because the animals actually look like what they look like in "real life." My 1 year old loves this book - we also have 100 First Words which I'd recommend as well.

Another GREAT Priddy book!
By A. Clark
I am an Early Intervention therapist for children birth-age 3. Every time I buy new books to use with my kiddos, I find myself always choosing books by Roger Priddy. I love (as do my children and those I work with) the REAL pictures rather than drawings and the solid backgrounds. It's very clear what vocabulary I am trying to teach. Again - I LOVE this book, and all of the others I have in my collection. I return to them again and again.

This volume presents the text of the 1921 Heinemann edition of Conrad's classic short novel along with documents that place the work in historical context and critical essays that read Heart of Darkness from several contemporary critical perspectives. The text and essays are complemented by biographical and critical introductions, bibliographies, and a glossary of critical and theoretical terms.  In this third edition, the section of cultural documents and illustrations is entirely new, as are two recent exemplary critical essays by Gabrielle McIntire and Tony C. Brown that synthesize a variety of current critical approaches.

Who knows our own Hearts of Darkness?
By Kali
I was once one of those students forced to read this book at school. I was dragged kicking and screaming to its pages and read it only because I did not want to flunk my English Literature class. I was riveted from the first page, right up to the last paragraph. It is quite simply Conrad's finest book, (yes, I read his other books after this one.) However be aware, this is not everyone's cup of tea. There will be some people who will read this book and think, "Oh God, you have to be kidding!" However if you can get passed this mentality then you are in for a real literary treat.
The story is simple enough, a young Englishman; Marlow (this character appears in Conrad's story "Youth") goes out to Africa to seek his fortune. He is at first idealistic, and full of himself. However he quickly realises that Africa is full of petty bureaucrats who have no idea how to make use of this dark jewel they have acquired. Like Colonists before them, they proceed to ravage and plunder the land of its natural resources. Enter Kurtz, an Ivory Trader who has gone Native. He has become a Renegade, living with his Black mistress in the heart of Africa's interior; systematically turning his back on his supposed civilised self.
Marlow meets Kurtz after an eventful trip up the Congo and finds himself curiously attracted to this strange man who is [very ill], and obviously going insane. Kurtz in turn is an embarrassment to his employers who would rather see him dead than returned to "civilization." Of course this is unspoken, and the hypocrisy of human natures sticks out like a sore thumb in this novel, especially as Kurtz is one of the best Ivory Traders on the Congo route.
Marlow struggles to understand Kurtz and what makes him tick, but he only touches the surface of a man who can live in neither the Black or White world comfortably. He has been [harmed] by both worlds and therefore he is cursed. Heart of Darkness has many facets; it is a story about Imperialism, racism, and the darkness of human nature. Conrad purposely leaves the ending open to interpretation. ...
This is a book that will make you think, make you want to it re-read again and again in case you have missed anything. There are also some genuinely funny moments in the book such as the Doctor who measures skulls for a hobby and the pompous Trading Post clerk who teaches his Black maid to starch his clothes. This edition, (Dover Thrift) is well worth getting as well, as it is [inexpensive] and cheerful and it definitely won't break the bank money wise.

How To Make a 75 Page Story Into a 400 Page Book
By Bucherwurm
I would like to address myself specifically to the Norton Critical Edition of this book. The difficulty that many readers face when they pick up a classic, pre-twentieth century novel is that they are not conversant with the history of the times in which it was written. Heart of Darkness can be enjoyed purely as a well written novella, but then you miss so much of what Conrad is trying to say not only regarding the thin veneer of man's social persona (ala Lord of the Flies) but about the evils of 19th century imperialism. What is the story of Colonialism? Do Conrad's derogatory remarks about Blacks make him a bigot? What were Conrad's overall views on life? What were Conrad's personal experiences in the Congo? What did readers think of Heart of Darkness when it was written, and what do the critics think of it today?
The Norton Critical Edition gives you 325 extra pages of material written by Conrad and others that provide answers to the above questions. You don't have to read all of these many articles, of course, but a good sampling of them will make your immersion in this famous story all the more enjoyable and meaningful.
This is a story that everyone should read, and the Norton Critical Edition provides the best format for the reading experience.

The title has become a cliche; the book is as fresh as ever
By hugh riminton
No-one seriously interested in English literature can afford not to read this book. As a central device, the parallel journey into the heart of Africa and the dark centre of the human experience, remains as powerful as ever. The writing in the opening pages, depicting the men and the Thames and the wide possibilities that rise with every outgoing tide, remain as evocative as anything in English. Conrad's subject is barbarity, a theme as relevant now as then. His dark view of the colonial instinct also stands as a warning at this very hour. With "Lord Jim" a thicker, but in many ways easier book to read, Conrad poses the great existential question that was to dominate personal politics throughout the 20th Century, the taking of personal responsibility, the search for personal redemption - as one character puts it: "How to be - Ach! How to be?" With "Heart of Darkness" he articulates what Michael Ignatieff has described as "the seductiveness of moral disgust." Faced with the darkness around him, the character Kurtz advises "exterminate the brutes." His final, dread epiphany, his message from the heart of his own darkness "The Horror! The Horror!" is as chilling now as it was a century ago - a century that has seen more horror than even Conrad could have imagined.
