gmood quality interactive board book.

My grandson is delighted with this book. The doors slide open easily and it seems sturdy enough to withstand the occasional throwing of it across the room in an impulsive tantrum that only a 2 year old has perfected. I love him so much!

Stiff, but worth it!

My toddler is obsessed with trucks, so he got this as a present from his aunt. He loves it! He enjoys pointing out the colors, drivers, and different vehicles. It's a decent sized book (big enough for me to see clearly, but small enough for a toddler's hands) and the pictures are great! The only flaw about it is that the "slide" spots are a little stiff and hard to push over sometimes... Other than that, we love this book!

Fascinating Book

My 2 year old grandson's love of trucks made this the perfect book to add to his library. Tbe slides are a bit stiff at first but hopefully eill liisen with use. The interactivity is more fun than the usual lift tab style. It satisfies his curiosity with learning this new slide and see approach.

The first spread depicts Franklin standing proudly by his family home with his wife and children smiling from within. His various occupations–writer, printer, diplomat, musician, humorist, postmaster, scientist, inventor, humanitarian–are written on the cobblestones beneath him. Next is a spread of a busy city street today, which challenges readers to guess which modern conveniences are owed to the subjects creativity. Subsequent spreads take a closer look at each invention from political cartoons, bifocals, electricity, lightning rod, and Franklin stove to daylight saving time and more. Each spread features a Now… description of a modern concept or convenience facing an early Ben… idea. Now…every automobile has an odometer to measure the distance it travels. Ben…invented the odometer when he was postmaster general so he could measure his postal routes. The fanciful final spread depicts a futuristic scene with flying-saucer vehicles and robot servers, which encourages youngsters to imagine how todays inventions will evolve in time. Engaging and humorous watercolor cartoons depict just how Franklins inventions were conceived and developed. The yellow mottled endpapers are filled with sketches of the inventions featured within. An authorial debut for illustrator Barretta, Now & Ben aims at the youngest readers, limiting its purview to Franklin as a slightly tubby, jolly inventor and innovator. Each left-hand page describes and illustrates one of Franklin's contributions as we know it ("Now . . . our newspapers are filled with illustrations"); the opposite page goes back in time to reveal the Franklin connection ("Ben . . . was the first to print a political cartoon in America"). Most young children won't grasp the play on the phrase now and then but will zero in instead on the well-chosen examples, which include bifocals and lightning rods as well as lesser-known notions (a rocking chair that churned butter!), all appealingly rendered in Barretta's relaxed, cartoonlike watercolors. This will be a punchy read-aloud to lighten up American history units, though teachers wanting more details will need to look elsewhere as the book's biographical context is scattershot and no end matter is provided. used it for a school report

We had a school report on a famous American, and my little sweetie chose Ben Franklin. For the book report part of the project, we used the book "Ben Franklin's Big Shock," but for project ideas and illustrations, you simply can not beat this book. It's very fun and funny, and yet still instructive.

This is a very worthwhile book, and it sets those little inventor wheels spinning inside their little heads.

Big Ben

Ben Franklin's probably the #1 subject of picture book biographies that cross my desk. He's picturesque -- both visually and as a bio subject. This is the first book I've chosen to review, however, because of its clever format and quirky execution.

On one side is "Now" -- the modern amenities we take for granted, such as odometers, second hands, bifocals, lightening rods and even public libraries. The "Ben" side shows Franklin puttering, tinkering, and hunkering down over his inventions, which include all of the above, plus charting the Gulf Stream, organizing the Post Office, and all that fun with lightening and kites and stuff.

Such a clever fellow, that Ben!

And that's not even getting into his statesmanship and political thinking, which the author treats lightly to focus on the man's inventive genius.

The "Now" side of the page is perky and vibrant in bright blues, while Franklin's 18th century half is awash in faded siennas, the color of aging documents, except for Ben in his blue coat, creating a visual link between our era and his.

I know from the brief time I lived in a Philly suburb how omnipresent are the many reminders of the man's influence, from Indepedence Hall to the Franklin Museum. The city's infused with awe for the man who was arguably our nuttiest Founding Father. But aren't the oddballs the ones you most want to know?

Like Barretta, a Philly resident, you won't be able to resist getting better acquainted.

My children loved it!!!

My children (ages 6 - 10) loved the story of Ben Franklin. They enjoyed learning of Ben's inventions and it was fun to talk about how they have evolved over time. The children especially loved the last scene depicting how things will evolve as they grow older. The illustrations and colors on every page were great for the imagination and provided so much insight to every part of the story. Great Job. A+

About the Author

Roger Priddy left school at 16 with just one qualification―in art. He went to Berkshire College of Art and Design and trained as an illustrator. His first job in children's books was working with the publisher Peter Usborne, at Usborne Publishing, and then he worked with Peter Kindersley at Dorling Kindersley, where he spent 16 years. Priddy became Creative Director of DK's Children's Division and was Managing Director of the children's mass market publisher Funfax when it was acquired by DK.

He is also the author of Big Board First 100 Words; Big Board Books Colors, ABC, Numbers; and Bright Baby Noisy Monsters. His creativity has been recognized with numerous industry awards. LOVE this wipe clean workbook!

Before seeing that video, I never knew that any thing like this even existed!! I really wanted something reusable, as we practice to get my son ready for preschool. Something to help him practice his tracing, pen control and writing. This product has exceeded my expectations 100000%

I love the fact that you can easily wipe this clean. I use a damp paper towel to ensure it is completely clean. I always make sure to clean it after we use it. I recommend doing this so that it doesn't stain. There are so many different things for the kids to trace in this book! All sorts of lines and images. My son LOVES the dog and cat tracing! They have so many different books, I look forward to purchasing more. Now we can practice and make it fun! This is one purchase I am exceedingly happy about! I highly recommend this for your preschool aged child!

I wish I could give more than 5 stars

We've been using multiple books in these series since Pre-school, and they are a godsend. The only complaint (like others) is the pen. The wipe on/off dry erase CRAYONS (Crayola-about $4 here or at Wal-Mart) are working the best...and Junior can handle those much more easily because they aren't as slippery on the page so they offer more control as well. Realizing these books are a bit more expensive, I have to say...if you can, spend the extra couple of dollars it's really worth being able to: a) keep this stuff all in one place within these great spiral-bound books; b)the content is exactly what your child is ready for and needs to supplement his school curriculum at home; c)Dry-Erase offers the convenience of being able to wipe-off and go over and over as many times as you want/need to offer consistency AND you're not wasting paper! (Did I mention, his Kindergarten teacher was very impressed at parent-teacher conferences?) Highly recommend any of this series.

If you're looking for a good, educational

If you're looking for a good, educational, and fun workbook for your toddler, this is the one to buy. I spent countless hours reading reviews on Amazon and researching on other sites. My daughter is 2, and she seemed ready for something other than just random coloring on paper, so I wanted a workbook that would begin teaching her to trade, color in the lines, etc. I ordered about 10 workbooks including this one, some Kumon tracing and maze books, and some basic concept ones by Spectrum. This is by FAR the best one and worth the extra few dollars for a 2 year old. It's great because it starts with VERY basic ideas (trace from a dot down), then has the child draw diagonally, draw in a u-shape, draw in a circle, trace shapes, and then trace multiple shapes to create a drawing (example: a cat is make up of triangles for the ears and a circle for the face). All great concepts. I didn't use the pen and instead ordered some dry erase Crayola Crayons, which work perfectly in the book and don't smear or have fumes. HIGHLY recommend this book which holds her attention well. She has a good attention span for her age, but still tends to do a few of the exercises per page and then wants to move on to another page or concept. With the other workbooks, they aren't trace-able, so I put them in the C-Line Reusable Dry Erase Pockets, thereby making my own diy dry erase sheets. But my daughter prefers this book, where she can move on from one concept to another by just turning the page and not get bored (as she tends to do at this age fairly quickly). It's definitely worth the few extra dollars to get this dry erase book over the regular paper workbook style, for the 2-3 year olds and probably the older kids, too. You get WAY more use out of it.

This is a good textbook. I have enjoyed reading it very much for my college history class. As well, I find its physical size to be very convenient. It's compact and not to heavy, so it's easy to carry around.

About the Author

Roger Priddy left school at 16 with just one qualification―in art. He went to Berkshire College of Art and Design and trained as an illustrator. His first job in children's books was working with the publisher Peter Usborne, at Usborne Publishing, and then he worked with Peter Kindersley at Dorling Kindersley, where he spent 16 years. Priddy became Creative Director of DK's Children's Division and was Managing Director of the children's mass market publisher Funfax when it was acquired by DK.

Super Size Mctruck Meal

If you have a child who is interested in trucks, this is a good bet. It's a big sturdy board book, great for little hands. It's loaded with photographs of real trucks- farm trucks, fire trucks, big rigs, construction vehicles, many of which we see on a daily basis around town.
My son will soon be two, and he has enjoyed this book practically since he was born. It's one of those books that grows with your child. When he was smaller we would just point to the trucks, identify them, and talk about what they did. When he got older, we would say the name of a truck and he would point to it. Now he's pointing and telling us what each truck is...you get the idea. It's also a great way to learn colors, (Show me the red truck!) and parts of cars. (Where are the headlights?)
Two years ago, I couldn't tell a backhoe from a forklift. Now I'm a pro, and so is my son, thanks in part to this book. Although I do have to say, a couple of the construction vehicles are mislabeled, a minor annoyance. They also have an animal book in this series, which is cute. The Big Train Book, however, is a big yawn.

Pretty good book for kids interested in trucks

My 18 month old son LOVES trucks and anything with a diesel engine. When we're driving or out somewhere he is always excited to see them pass by.
Our friend had this book for her son and as soon as my son saw it he had to have it, too. Now he will lie down on the floor and study each picture very closely. He will spend hours looking at this book. After he started to "read" this book (with a little help from me and his dad) he now calls the different vehicles by their proper names. Everything used to be a truck - now it's a BUS! or a FIRE TRUCK! or MAIL TRUCK!(imagine him yelling in excitement).
It is a hard page, large book (about 10" x 10"). It has real photographs with bright colors in the background. Each page is dedicated to a different category of truck such as construction or emergency. Each photo is titled and each page has a question like "Which truck takes away your trash." My husband is mildly annoyed with some of the descriptions because they call a backhoe a digger and a mini excavator a mini digger. This is the reason I have given this book 4 stars instead of 5.
I would highly recommend this book to any young child who is interested in trucks.

Fun introduction to things that go VROOOOM!!

From the time my son first learned to talk, he has shown a fierce curiosity about what things are called, especially the things he sees when we are driving around. I was so pleased with Priddy's My Big Animal Book (Priddy Bicknell Big Ideas for Little People) that I picked up My Big Truck Book to help him identify various vehicles as well as to build his growing vocabulary. The book was a tremendous success on both levels.

The book features large, sturdy pages that catalog a variety of farm, construction, rescue, and other vehicles. The photos are large and colorful, and never fail to capture my son's attention. Between this book and My Big Animal Book, my son's vocabulary and understanding of the world around him increased by leaps and bounds. I still remember the first time we drove by a construction site and I heard him shouting "Backhoe! Mini excavator! Dump truck!" The book also allowed us to use his curiosity about vehicles and fascination with the pictures to teach him about the vehicles' functions, colors, and sizes.

My son is two years old now and more interested in storybooks, plus he knows the vehicles in this book front to back. That doesn't keep him from taking this book off the shelf time after time just to enjoy seeing his favorite trucks, tractor, and construction equipment.

I highly recommend this durable, colorful, and inexpensive book to all parents of curious toddlers. As teaching aids go, My Big Truck Book has proven far more effective than many a high-priced electronic gadget or DVD.

A good, easy read

Many times I want a book to read that is just very easy reading, but still holds my attention and Jessica Beck's books always meet that criteria. If you have not tried her books and want just an easy read, try this one and her other "donut shop" books.

Great series, good book

The Donut Shop Mystery series is about Suzanne Hart who owns a donut shop called Donut Hearts. This is the fifth installment in the series.
1. Glazed murder
2. Fatally frosted
3. Sinister sprinkles
4. Evil eclairs
5. Tragic toppings

In previous books, Suzanne has investigated some of murders that have occurred in her small town with the help of her friends- Grace, retired cop George, and her boyfriend, state police investigator Jake. Tragic Toppings begins with Suzanne investigating the disappearance of Emily, a local newsstand owner. She is able to quickly crack the case, but later that night she finds a dead body hanging in the park. It's Tim, a local handyman who was well liked by all. Of course Suzanne starts digging into the case and this time, Jake is not on a job somewhere and is able to help. They quickly discover that Tim was quite a ladies' man, so the suspects are plenty.

Tragic Toppings is another good book in this series. The characters are their usual quirky selves and the mystery has lots of twists and turns. I would like to see more drama in their personal lives, just to have an interesting back story. I am eager to read the next one!

"Tragic Toppings" by Jessica Beck. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE these books. They, to me, are fun and fluffy and cozy and comfortable. However, they are not for everybody.

I love the small town of April Springs, NC. I have never been to North Carolina, except a plane stopover, it that counts. I have, however, lived in the South all my life, so I can relate to that dimension of it. I love Suzanne, the main character, and I also love Emma, her assistant, and also Grace, her best friend. But most of all, I love Momma, Dorothy. She is the sweetest, most loving person and mother ever. Suzanne is so lucky to have her as a mother.

I also love Napoli's, an Italian restaurant in the next town over. The owner, Angelica, is Suzanne's personal friend, and Angelica and her three daughters make homemade pasta. I want to eat there!!!!

I love Donut Hearts, the donut shop owned by Suzanne. Even though I don't eat donuts any more for a couple of different reasons, it is still a cozy situation.

I also love George. He is a very good person and a friend of Suzanne's. He is loyal and awesome. If Suzanne and Jake don't work out, I wonder if Suzanne and George will get together.

I love this book, and all the books in this series. To me, it is a soft, lovely, fun, cozy, warm, comfortable, fluffy mystery series.

Now, on to the review of this particular book:

There is a murder (because this is a murder mystery), and Suzanne and Grace find the body. They are determined to find the killer. Jake and George help them find the killer. George walks with a cane because he had an accident in the last book. He is a retired police officer, so he loves opportunities to help out investigating. The foursome split up and talk to people. While Suzanne is busy trying to run her donut shop AND find the killer, something else happens that hinders her being able to do both (I can't tell you what it is because I don't want to ruin the book for those who haven't read it yet). She also gets a warning message to lay off investigating.

Meanwhile, her mother, the lovely widow, is trying to start dating again. They (she and the guy) keep having setbacks and problems in that department. I kept wondering if they will ever actually get a decent date in!

This is a really good book. I enjoyed it so much.

About the Author
ROBERT D. MARCUS, late of the State University of New York College at Brockport, wrote on late-nineteenth-century American politics as well as on the United States in the 1960s. He developed materials for collaborative learning techniques and edited several dozen books for Brandywine Press.

DAVID BURNER, professor emeritus of history at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, has written two books on John F. Kennedy as well as books on Herbert Hoover, the 1960s, and the Democratic Party in the 1920s, including a number of textbooks. Burner has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship and is now completing a detailed history of the American wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

ANTHONY MARCUS is an Associate Professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice of the City University of New York. He has taught American History, Anthropology, and International Development Studies on three continents and founded Australia's only entirely online Internet PhD program. His published works include numerous articles and books on history, African-American life, global development and culture. His most recent book, Where Have All The Homeless Gone? The Making and Unmaking of a Crisis is about the impact of the Reagan Revolution on life and social policy in the urban United States.

About the Author

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Cheyenne McCray writes the Night Tracker novels and the Armed and Dangerous series, among others. She grew up on a ranch in southeastern Arizona. She has been writing ever since she can remember, back to her kindergarten days when she penned her first poem. She always knew one day she would write novels―she wanted to create worlds that readers would get lost in, just as she had always gotten lost in her favorite books. Could break your heart

The book started off great but the entire paranormal world was changed throughout the chapters. In the end, Cheyenne killed or changed too many of the main characters. It felt like someone else wrote the ending. This series was great from book one to book four. The drow princess, council, Nadia, more trackers, and even Rodan either dies or changes. It was too much and I found myself hoping for the end before something else happened.
I hated that feeling, so I feel that this book broke my heart and I will not read any more of this series.

No more Night Trackers?

Can you treat this as a standalone book? No. I would not even try. There's too many characters and twists from the previous books to make this to where you would feel as if you truly understand the storyline. I would honestly not read this book if you haven't read the others.

Did I like the book? Yes, I did. I am kind of disappointed at some aspects- namely Rodan and Nyx's latest problem. I won't spoil it! But argh, Nyx is like a walking trouble magnet. The woman just can't get a break.

Colin. *sigh* Want an amazing man, erm, dragon. Where can I get one?

I'm sad that this appears to be the last of the series. I've gotten to where I like UF novels almost more than paranormal romance.
