About the Author
JAMES L. ROARK (Ph.D., Stanford University) is the Samuel Chandler Dobbs Professor of History at Emory University. He has written and edited four books, including, with Michael P. Johnson, Black Masters: A Free Family of Color in the Old South (1984).
MICHAEL P. JOHNSON (Ph.D., Stanford University) is a professor of history at the Johns Hopkins University. He has written or edited six books, including No Chariot Let Down: Charleston’s Free People of Color on the Eve of the Civil War (1984) and Reading the American Past.
PATRICIA CLINE COHEN (Ph.D., University of California, Berkeley) is professor of history at the University of California at Santa Barbara. She has written three books including The Murder of Helen Jewett: The Life and Death of a Prostitute in Nineteenth-Century New York (1998).
SARAH STAGE (Ph.D., Yale University) is professor of women’s studies at Arizona State University West. She has written three books, including Rethinking Women and Home Economics in the Twentieth Century (1997).
ALAN LAWSON (Ph.D., University of Michigan) is professor of history at Boston College. He has written or edited three books, including From Revolution to Republic (1976).

book is good, book is coming apart

I was supposed to get a hardback book and again I received a paperback, and the book is already coming apart. I do not carry the book to class, I only read it at home, and part of the back cover is coming off. I do not expect a book to come apart when all I do is leave it on the table and pick it up to read it. I could understand if I carried it with me everyday, but I do not. The book should be made well enough to sit at home and read. I am very unhappy about the quality of the book.

The American Promise Textbook Review

If you need this book for school like I did, then it's cheaper to buy it here on Amazon, especially if you think you might need both volumes.
The book is pretty packed with information and the organization is done first by topic and then chronologically. It makes sense and is not too hard to follow.
I highly recommend this book if you are a college or college professor looking for a good history book or if your looking to get a good solid foundation in history.

How history is written is always changing

When I read this text I think back to high school US History. Most of the dates and events remain the same, but there is so much reframing of how to consider them. Also, this text is much more proactive about direct the student's attention to key details. I've noticed that in other more contemporary texts. Would have been handy in high school or undergrad.
