Exactly what I needed

The book came very quickly (i had overnight shipping). It was in good condition, a few folds and tears but they were nothing. It was highlighted in, which was fine as well. In fact it was useful when I was skimming over the chapters. Overall i'm very happy with my purchase.

RISE B. AXELROD is director of English composition and McSweeney Professor of Rhetoric and Teaching Excellence at the University of California, Riverside. She has previously been professor of English at California State University, San Bernardino, director of the College Expository Program at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and assistant director of the Third College Composition Program at the University of California, San Bernardino.

CHARLES R. COOPER is an emeritus professor in the department of literature at the University of California, San Diego, where he served as coordinator of the Third College Composition Program, Dimensions of Culture Program, and Campus Writing Programs. He has also been co-director of the San Diego Writing Project, one of the National Writing Project Centers. He is coeditor, with Lee Odell, of Evaluating Writing and Research on Composing: Points of Departure , and coauthor, with Susan Peck MacDonald, of Writing the World (Bedford/St. Martin's, 2000).

About the Author
SUSAN BELASCO (Ph.D., Texas A&M University), professor of English and women’s studies at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, has taught courses in writing and American literature at several institutions since 1974. The editor of Margaret Fuller’s Summer on the Lakes and Fanny Fern’s Ruth Hall, she is also the coeditor of three collections of essays: Approaches to Teaching Stowe’s "Uncle Tom’s Cabin," Periodical Literature in Nineteenth-Century America, and Leaves of Grass: The Sesquicentennial Essays. The editor of "Walt Whitman’s Periodical Poetry" for the Walt Whitman Archive (whitmanarchive.org), she is the current president of the Research Society for American Periodicals.

LINCK JOHNSON (Ph.D., Princeton University), the Charles A. Dana Professor of English at Colgate University, has taught courses in writing and American literature and culture since 1974. He is the author of Thoreau’s Complex Weave: The Writing of "A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers,"with the Text of the First Draft, the Historical Introduction to A Week in the Princeton University Press edition of the Writings of Henry D. Thoreau, and numerous articles and contributions to books. A great textbook

As a student in an American Literature (beginning to 1865) class, I was assigned to read from this textbook. I am generally wary of anthologies because so many of them throw together hundreds of pages of material with little thought for the selection of excerpts, the organization of the material, or any explanatory text. This anthology, however, provides almost as much background information (biographical and historical) as actual texts. The illustrations, timelines, and maps are also invaluable. Further, the explanatory sections are very well written and interesting to read. In reading this anthology, I find I'm getting a good introduction to early American history as well as literature. I also appreciate how affordable this anthology is compared to others that are available. And, believe it or not, I'm considering purchasing Volume 2 to read on my own after I finish reading Volume 1 for class.

A Good Anthology of Early America

I am currently using this anthology in the American literature course I am taking. The history and background information is interesting and easy to understand. The literary selections are a good mix and representative of the time periods. I find myself more interested in some of the pieces thanks to the "Through a Modern Lens" pieces included throughout the anthology.

About the Author

Roger Priddy left school at 16 with just one qualification―in art. He went to Berkshire College of Art and Design and trained as an illustrator. His first job in children's books was working with the publisher Peter Usborne, at Usborne Publishing, and then he worked with Peter Kindersley at Dorling Kindersley, where he spent 16 years. Priddy became Creative Director of DK's Children's Division and was Managing Director of the children's mass market publisher Funfax when it was acquired by DK.

In 2000, he created Priddy Books with John Sargent at St Martin's Press to create innovative and imaginative titles for children, from first books for babies through early reference titles for older children. Since then, over 30 million copies of Roger's 200 plus books have sold worldwide, with five of his books―My Big Animal, My Big Truck, Happy Baby Words, Happy Baby Colors and Puppy and Friends―each selling over one million copies. I wanted a few bilingual books to introduce my 2 year old to Spanish. I love the quality, bright colors, content, size, everything!! He never gets bored of these! I ordered 3 of this series and I think the "Primeras Palabras" is my favorite. There are multiple words that are in several of the books, but it doesn't bother me. For example, there is a fish in "Primeras Palabras" as well as "Colores", but the pictures are of 2 different fish. I really appreciated that and would have been a little annoyed if it were the same picture in each. My husband can pick it up and read the English while I read him the Spanish. (Note: I am a native English speaker with approx 4 years of high school Spanish). I plan to only buy bilingual books from here on out. You get 2 languages for one price!

About the Author
X.J. KENNEDY is an acclaimed poet, children's author, college teacher, and textbook author. He has taught freshman composition at the University of Michigan, the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, and Tufts University. Since 1966, more than 2 million students have treasured his introductory literature texts and The Bedford Reader, coedited with Dorothy M. Kennedy and Jane E. Aaron, now in its Ninth Edition.

DOROTHY M. KENNEDY is a writer and editor whose articles and reviews have appeared in both professional and academic journals. She has taught composition at the University of Michigan and Ohio University and, with X.J. Kennedy, is the recipient of the NCTE Teacher's Choice Award for Knock at a Star: A Child's Introduction to Poetry. MARCIA F. MUTH is a teacher, writer, and textbook editor. She has taught first-year composition at The Ohio State University and now offers writing workshops through the School of Education at the University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center. Save your money

I was hoping to find a decent textbook for an advanced composition class that I teach in Daejeon, South Korea and that is why I decided to give the Bedford Guide a chance. After paying over 65.00 plus another 35.00 for priority shipping (which took almost 10 days; I would have been better off just having it shipped standard shipping)I was really excited when it finally arrived, but that excitement turned to dismay when I saw the book up close and personal. It failed to live up to my expectations. I was counting on some in-depth, practical approach to college composition but it was not what I had hoped it would be. I also found the reader too thin with essays uninteresting.

I am sticking with the Little, Brown Reader next time.

The most important part of this title is "for COLLEGE WRITERS"

Solid information for students. There is good information on writing a formal
letter . . . but nothing on a formal email.

There are editions and release dates. These are worth noting.

But as for general knowledge for a fiction writer, Your time is better spent elsewhere.
