About the Author

Alvin Townley spent a year traveling throughout the country to explore the legacy of America's Eagle Scouts. In thousands of miles of travel, he met with Eagles from all walks of life. The result was Legacy of Honor, a uniquely powerful narrative of character and virtue in American life.

Alvin's journey truly began years ago in Atlanta, Georgia, where he followed the Scouting path of his grandfather and father and earned his Eagle Scout rank with Troop 103. He is a Brotherhood Member of the Order of the Arrow and has completed High Adventure treks at the Florida Sea Base, the Northern Tier Canoe Bases, and Philmont Scout Ranch.

The author graduated from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. He has interned in the U.S. House of Representatives, served on the executive staff of an international consulting firm, and worked for his alma mater, where he built relationships with alumni across the country and spoke to classes on corporate strategy and ethics.

Alvin currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia, where he works and coaches at Marist School. He also works with Reach for Excellence, a tuition-free program benefiting talented middle school students from underserved communities.

If you like reading about Eagle Scouts this will satisfy, but truthfully it's the topic that carries the book. Nothing wrong with the execution, but if you're not already sold on Eagle Scouts this won't do much for you.

What we want our kids to be

After reading Mr.Townley's book, I have come to realize that one of the few organizations in our society teaching ALL the values we want our children to exhibit is Scouting.

This is a remarkable book based on Mr. Towley's trek to speak with significant Eagle Scouts and have them reflect on the impact of Scouting on their lives. These folks are truely great Americans. I think Mr. Townley has captured, in a well written and easy to consume book, the essence of this remarkable achievement - earning the rank of Eagle Scout.

In times of difficulty, it is refreshing to read a book showing that being trifty, honorable and patriotic, as well as reverent and trustworthy, still carries impact in the way we should deal with ourselves.

This book is not preachy or overly sentimental. It has the right tone and one speeds through it.

I recommend this book to all parents who are searching for ways to improve their children's development in the right way. The folks Mr. Towley has selected as examples of what Scouting has done for them are people who got it, get it and improve the lives of others. Great book!

A must read!

I was extremely impressed and inspired by this book. In many ways, it renewed my passions in Scouting. As a fellow Eagle Scout, I would say that his analysis on what is an Eagle Scout, and what drives Eagles is right on the money.

I would advise all new Eagles be presented this book with the instructions: 'Read it now, if you wish. Read it upon completion of college or upon reaching the age of 21. Read it again (at a minimum)when you reach each successive decade in age.'

It should be required read for professional scouters and a highly recommended read for scoutmasters.

About the Author

Roger Priddy left school at 16 with just one qualification―in art. He went to Berkshire College of Art and Design and trained as an illustrator. His first job in children's books was working with the publisher Peter Usborne, at Usborne Publishing, and then he worked with Peter Kindersley at Dorling Kindersley, where he spent 16 years. Priddy became Creative Director of DK's Children's Division and was Managing Director of the children's mass market publisher Funfax when it was acquired by DK.

In 2000, he created Priddy Books with John Sargent at St Martin's Press to create innovative and imaginative titles for children, from first books for babies through early reference titles for older children. Since then, over 30 million copies of Roger's 200 plus books have sold worldwide, with five of his books―My Big Animal, My Big Truck, Happy Baby Words, Happy Baby Colors and Puppy and Friends―each selling over one million copies. He is also the author of Big Board First 100 Words; Big Board Books Colors, ABC, Numbers; and Bright Baby Noisy Monsters. His creativity has been recognized with numerous industry awards. Priddy lives in London with his wife Zena and their four children.

Great for babies - English and Spanish speaking alike!

My 13 month old has loved this book for months. She is not old enough to understand the language differences, but she loves looking at the photos of babies. I also think the format is the perfect size and texture (solid with a soft cover) for her little hands.

Eventually I hope to teach her some Spanish from this book (and think it will be great for that, with a pronunciation guide included) but regardless of the language it is a favorite. I have gone on to buy more Happy Baby books and I think they're all great.

Nice pictures, very colorful and good translation

I got this book for my 16 months old baby boy. At the begining he did not pay attention but after a few days of practice he is loving it. Nice pictures, very colorful and good translation. The only word that is spell incorrectly is Brocoli which on the book is brecol. I am not 100% sure if that word is in this book or in the other one (colors/colores) from the same collection. Also, I think the book uses Spanish from Spain and maybe there Brocoli is Brecol I really don't know but other than that the books are perfect.

"You really were after the property."

A young girl's painful first love and the unresolved feelings of the relationship are the crux of this novel, which moves from West Sussex in 1980 to Alloa, Scotland and New York. When Claire Barclay's widowed mother meets and marries the kind, gentle Leo Harrison, fifteen years her senior, mother and daughter move to Leo's rambling home in Scotland, a place Claire grows to love. Although she is never accepted by her jealous step-siblings, Charity and Marcus, Claire basks in Leo's generous affection, the only flaw in her world the abrupt and inexplicable ending to her close friendship (on the cusp of romance) with Jonas Fairweather, whose father works on Leo's estate.

Claire learns to put heartbreak behind, albeit unresolved, until her mixed emotions resurface years later after her mother's unexpected death and Leo's failing health. Suddenly Claire is back in Scotland with her husband and small daughter, faced with a confusing set of circumstances and a scheme that may threaten Leo's future security. Until old issues are put to rest and new troubles confronted, Claire's peace of mind remains elusive. At the heart of the novel is the unresolved breakup between Claire and Jonas, made more difficult by the uncertainty of Leo's future, the elderly man caught between his step daughter and his adult children, who have ideas of their own.

This novel might have more impact were the characters and their conflicts less superficial and formulaic. But it is hard to credit a young woman's loss of first love and the rancor still carried towards her by Marcus and Charity, let alone Fairweather's prominence in the story. The plot remains mired in petty, if expensive grievances. Pilcher does capture Claire's idyllic childhood in Scotland and writes with flair of the details of place. Yet the conflict at the heart of the story is less than satisfactory, the characters not quite memorable. Luan Gaines/2010.

Engrossing, but not as good as his earlier books

I'm a fan of Robin Pilcher and couldn't wait to get his latest book. I was put off at first by the way he shifts back and forth to various years, and found I had to keep checking back to see what year I was reading about. Did he think the plot wouldn't stand if he wrote chronologically? I also got impatient in the middle and cheated to see the ending. And then I got engrossed again and read every word.

I don't want to give away the plot, so let me say that what I especially liked about this book is that it is a man writing about relationships, not just romantic ones, but family and more. However, he also brings in subjects most female authors don't, such as business and finance, so his plots gets involved and interesting. In the end I found the plot and the characters believable.

If you are a Pilcher fan, either of Robin or his mother, do buy this book! But if you are just being introduced to this author, I recommend that you start with one of his earlier books.

Note that this book is being simultaneously published in the UK under a different title. So don't buy another book of Pilcher's with the characters Claire, Violet, Leo, Jonas, Art.

A lightweight, saved by stepfather Leo ...

When Claire's mother marries again, they move from their home in Sussex to stepfather Leo's large house in Scotland. Here 10 year old Claire meets 11 year old Jonas, whose father rents a farm on Leo's property. Claire and Jonas form a bond which lasts all through their teenage years until suddenly, without any explanation, Jonas distances himself from Claire and never talks to her again.

Postponing university, Claire decides to do a bit of travelling and after some time in Australia ends up in New York where she marries Art and together the two of them build up a successful restaurant business.

The sudden death of Claire's mother Daphne and the declining health of Leo bring Claire back to Scotland - and Jonas. Claire loves her stepfather and wants him to keep on living in his beloved home, well taken care of. Trying to help Leo, can she, however, put her trust in the man who broke her heart so many years ago and whom she has never completely forgotten?

The book is light and easy reading. But in spite of clever - although a bit stereotype - characterization, the story did not quite manage to grap my attention. It's flawed by too many platitudes, especially in the dialogue. The love story between Claire and Jonas does not convince. Instead of getting caught up and curious, I became impatient, skipped pages and took a peek at the end ...

What saves the book, is Claire's stepfather Leo. With his big heart and lots of personality, his beloved garden and rows and rows of exotic plants in his greenhouses, he makes a brilliant character beautifully drawn.

All in all "The long way home" is a disappointment compared with Robin Pilcher's previous work. A lightweight saved by dear, unforgettable Leo.

Easy going, but perfectly informative

I got this book for my Interpersonal Communications class this year and am about to go to my last class of the semester. I found the book interesting and easy to read - and we did read it in it's entirety. A lot of it was very basic but this is for an introductory course, so I'm not sure what else one would be be looking for really :D I personally enjoyed the things I did learn and had no problem glossing over the things that were already common knowledge. All in all no complaints from my end - thanks for an engaging book :D

Great Introductory Book

I thought the book (2nd edition) was excellent. It was well-written in that it presented ideas very clearly and succinctly. The examples presented in the book (including references to Seinfeld, Everyone Loves Raymond, Friends, etc.) usually illustrated the point being made. There were many, many references to theories in interpersonal communication and some technical jargon that accompanies those theories. My instructor relied heavily upon this book and he is one of the stronger professors at my institution.

This book could be improved by providing more exercises. Occasionally various classifications (of behavior, etc.) in the theory were a little abstract and there were not enough examples to really clarify the point. The on-line quizzes presented scenarios and asked me to classify the scenario per the terms of the theory. A little more practice with these scenarios (e.g. exercises) would have better prepared me for the test. As I write this, I realize I'm giving a plug for the workbook, which I did NOT use.

Still I found this book to be exceptional. I rented it and want this as a permanent resource, so I expect to buy this in used condition when the 3rd edition comes out. I'm a solid "A" student with credits from several quality institutions and I don't understand the haters who have given it a substandard review.

I gave this book to a man who has difficulty making meaningful social connections with people. He has Asbergers. He said he read it tirelessly, hungry for what was in the book, thinking this book was meant for him to read. I read a similar book that changed my life years ago. It was a text like this for a communications class. Someone thought I should take communications, so I did. I though it was all about me too!

Many people learn this stuff growing up, but I didn't. We didn't communicate really in my family. Love was something you get from someone. After taking that class I met the man of my dreams, and 10 years later we were married. Communications class helped, as well as other communication-oriented classes. Therapy helped too.

I never felt I could understand why people did what they did. This book is a start.

LARRY BEASON is associate professor of English and director of composition at the University of South Alabama. His teaching interests include composition, grammar, and the teaching of writing. He has published in journals such as Research in the Teaching of English and Journal of Business Communication.

MARK LESTER, former professor of English at Eastern Washington University, is the author of over a dozen books on grammar and linguistics. He has served as the chair of the department of English as a Second Language at the University of Hawaii and chair of the department of English at Eastern Washington University.

My grandson loves this book!

My grandson just turned two and just beginning to learn numbers, colors and identifying different things. This book was so very helpful to him and to me. He now can count, recognizes his colors and shapes and is talking up a storm. This book is his afternoon "read to me" book. We sit quietly and go over every thing in the book and his little mind just absorbs everything.

The colors are nice and bright but not overpowering and the book can be held in his litltle hands. If your child, granchchild, etc. is ready for more challenging things, then this book is for them! I recommend it highly and I am sure it will be one of your child's favorites!!
