About the Author

Roger Priddy left school at 16 with just one qualification―in art. He went to Berkshire College of Art and Design and trained as an illustrator. His first job in children's books was working with the publisher Peter Usborne, at Usborne Publishing, and then he worked with Peter Kindersley at Dorling Kindersley, where he spent 16 years. Priddy became Creative Director of DK's Children's Division and was Managing Director of the children's mass market publisher Funfax when it was acquired by DK.

In 2000, he created Priddy Books with John Sargent at St Martin's Press to create innovative and imaginative titles for children, from first books for babies through early reference titles for older children. Since then, over 30 million copies of Roger's 200 plus books have sold worldwide, with five of his books―My Big Animal, My Big Truck, Happy Baby Words, Happy Baby Colors and Puppy and Friends―each selling over one million copies. He is also the author of Big Board First 100 Words; Big Board Books Colors, ABC, Numbers; and Bright Baby Noisy Monsters. His creativity has been recognized with numerous industry awards. Priddy lives in London with his wife Zena and their four children.

cute book but no texture at all

If you want a book that has texture for baby to feel - this is not the one you want. Cute pictures - but I could not find any textures. I would return except for the hassle.

CHAPTER ONE

Farewell to an Heiress
 

JANUARY 1953
The procession of mourners wound along the rutted unpaved road toward a weedy little graveyard next to Indian land. Behind it tolled the bells of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in town; ahead of it rose Taos Mountain, the Sacred Mountain, all white with its peak hidden in the clouds. Brightly colored plastic flowers, indigenous to Spanish gravesites, bloomed from decorated crosses and gravestones in the high-desert resting place for local Spanish families and anglos. Millicent Rogers, in a manner as improbable yet fitting as so much of her unsettled life, was going home.
Taos, New Mexico, had long captivated artists, bohemians, scamps, and freethinking souls from elsewhere, who settled into its hive of quirky adobe houses at the feet of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Millicent Rogers had finally been one of them. She had been one of the most beautiful and richest women in America, perhaps the world. The toast of barons, industrialists, and royalty for almost five decades, she was known and admired in the fashion ateliers of Paris, London, and New York. Her face and fashions had appeared in Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar all her life. She had loved a constellation of spectacular men. Now that the grand arc of her life had come to an end she was laid, as she requested, with her head facing Taos Mountain, next to the pueblo village and Indian people whom she had fallen nearly desperately in love with during the last six years of her life.
One mourner, the critic and writer William Goyen, wrote of the day,
The ceremony was a dreadful small-town ceremony in the graveyard produced by the local funeral home.… A sort of Muzak chimed a mawkish hymn. We all gathered round while the priest said his words, and a brilliant game rooster suddenly leapt to a fence just to one side of the grave and crowed. When the brief ceremony was over, Benito, the young Indian who had been in love with Millicent—wild, with flowing black hair to his shoulders, and flowers in his hair, and bedecked with bracelets, necklaces, beads, and drunk—and who had been held back, sullen and grief-stricken until now, rushed from the background and broke through the crowd toward the grave, crying out. But he was caught and held back by other Indians.1
Goyen’s cosmopolitan eye noted that the funeral was attended by “the rich and celebrated from various parts of the world.” One English aristocrat, Dorothy Brett, got her car ahead of the hearse and out of grief or her own haphazard driving habit, zigzagged the whole procession along the road.
Millicent’s three sons had come: the eldest, wearing a cutaway suit, was the product of her ill-fated elopement with an Austrian nobleman when she was twenty-one, the other two were sons from her second marriage to an Argentine aristocrat that had also ended in divorce. Millicent’s mother, Mary Rogers, a dowager from the East Coast, had arrived after a three-day train trip in her own railroad car, a legacy from a life underwritten by an oil and railroad fortune that had also richly funded her daughter’s stylish life. The funeral was postponed for several days to allow for her arrival. Mary had quietly asserted that under these circumstances the rail companies could accommodate her request to make the trip without a train change, and they had.
There was a certain incongruity for the writer Goyen, and perhaps to others on the scene, that these people of pedigree and wealth were gathered together to say their good-byes to a high-flying daughter, mother, friend, and lover as she was lowered into such a humble gravesite. Yet she had toward the end of her life taken refuge, sought peace and beauty, in elemental things. Her quest had led her to Taos. Though true happiness seemed always to elude her, Millicent claimed to her youngest son in a letter months before her death, an event she felt approaching at age fifty, that she was finally at peace. It would offer some comfort to her survivors.
Her life, like her funeral, had been distinctive, even unpredictable. During her time in Taos, she had deliberately befriended the Indians from the pueblo and they came to her funeral in numbers unprecedented to mourn the death of an outsider. Draped in the colorful blankets that they wore against the cold in winter and for celebrations, they appeared to bid her safe journey to the afterlife and farewell, in a rainbow of reds, blues, and yellows, their shiny black hair drawn back into buns and plaits, their heads bowed. They stood respectfully in a riot of color against the wide, Western winter sky.
Millicent was dressed as finely in her mahogany coffin as she had been in life. She wore an Apache-style dress made for her by her designer friend and fashion legend Elsa Schiaparelli. A great silver concho belt was twined at her waist. The large, mostly turquoise, rings that she favored were on her hands and a fine Indian chief blanket was wrapped around her. There was a brief Catholic ceremony. In a late life conversion, Millicent had become a Catholic the week before her death. After Benito’s display of grief, most of the mourners looked away or hurried to their cars to leave.
For almost no one who left the Sierra Vista Cemetery on that day, had Millicent Rogers truly been put to rest. Her life and image would be reflected for decades to come through her vast belongings, words, old photographs, and history. She would be reinvented again and again by the fashion world, which she influenced in almost equal parts in life and after death. She cast a long shadow even from the grave on her family, and her three sons would variously strive to uphold, repudiate, and re-create her legend. With each subsequent year, her true self would seem to fade and grow faint, like a photograph exposed to the harsh New Mexican sun, while her heirs continued to retouch it. It would become more and more difficult to separate the truths of her life from the myth, especially because in life Millicent had been a restless soul, one who seldom stayed for long in one place. She was mistress of the grand gesture and exercised a practiced inscrutability, which no doubt accounted for much of her allure.
Her life arched over half a century of American history and across two continents. Born in the Edwardian era, she died just as the first signs of the upheaval of the sixties were visible on Taos’s funky horizon. The beginning of her remarkable trajectory, like the origin of so many American sagas of the twentieth century, lay in the crystallization of wealth that produced great fortunes in the late 1800s. Her life and its trappings would have inspired an Edith Wharton heroine. With good looks, plenty of money, and a personal elegance that seemed to transcend both, she sampled life widely, but never fully invested. She was both a debutante and a flapper of the twenties, and she had no sooner come of age than she eloped with a titled European as the most daring daughters of great wealth did after the first World War. There were two more husbands and many more high-profile lovers as she lived the ex-patriot high life of Europe before World War II, and joined into the heady whirl of wartime Washington during the war. When the conflict ended, still recognized as a fashion trendsetter, she joined the new front of American glamour in Hollywood. There was a fling with the movie star Clark Gable, and then her constant quest for beauty in fashion, art, men—all the world around her—led her to Taos, where she found, finally, unexpected fulfillment. It was more than most women dream of, accomplished in five decades. Then at fifty she was dead.

A Beautiful Book

One might be tempted to dismiss Millicent Rogers as a spoiled, rich dilettante and as a person relocated to Taos, NM twenty years ago, I already had. After reading Cherie Burns' thoroughly researched biography, Searching For Beauty, I must revise my opinion. Because Burns' beautifully written and fully documented book brings her subject up and off the page as a sympathetic human being full of contradictions and complexities and because Rogers' seemingly glamorous, privileged life was ultimately poignant, I am now eager to dash over to The Millicent Rogers Museum and peruse her treasures on display to confirm that yes, "She really had an eye."

It is also easy to glibly condemn fashion as a frivolous form of artistic expression but Millicent Rogers was a pioneer in raising the bar and simultaneously leveling the playing field to incorporate indigenous and folk costume and jewelry into haute couture thereby creating a brave personal style for herself. Burns does not romanticize Rogers but in her clear-eyed, balanced way she portrays the nuances of a uniquely creative woman living in a unique set of circumstances of tremendous inherited wealth; Rogers not only yearned for but ultimately found, in the deepest spiritual sense far beyond her upbringing and money, True Beauty and even some measure of serenity in nature through exploring the worldview of her Taos Pueblo friends.

Searching For Beauty is a marvelous, almost novelistic, read full of historical gossip and intrigue; it would make a great gift for anyone remotely interested in the world of fashion long before Manolos. Burns' section on Rogers' life in Taos is priceless and far surpasses anything written by or about Mabel Dodge Luhan as far as evoking the spirit of that magical, eccentric enclave in Northern New Mexico. Kudos to Cherie Burns for writing a beautiful book.

Rich, beautiful, willfull, talented...

I've been fascinated by Millicent Rogers since I first saw her clothes and jewelry in an exhibit at the Costume Institute, Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York many years ago. I've also visited her museum near Taos. She is one of those women like Georgia O'Keefe and Mable Dodge Luhan who came to northern New Mexico and found a new life--always a fascinating story. But there was so much, so many phases, of her life that was new to me. A creative, innovative woman who found her outlet in fashion and design. She had an knack for picking the places and the men who were at the cultural center of any give time. Highly recommended for fashion buffs, people interested in social history, and anyone receptive to a woman's quest.

Great read. It was easy to figure out who the bad guys were but overall interesting and fun read. The end still had a couple of twists. I would recommend.

VERY disappointing

I have had a long relationship with Debra Webb's books and all have been about a four star read, but this is one of those books I wish I hadn't even started. The cover sounds and looks good, but it doesn't stand up to the story. I disliked most of the main characters and found that at the end the only one I felt any empathy for was the serial killer. Not only that, but the last page and a half were totally unneeded and made the whole book redundant. At least to me.

Sarah Newton is a reporter for a magazine called "Truth". She is known for getting to the facts and debunking myths and legends. She has a dark secret in her past and does not trust anyone. She lies to her shrink and her boss about taking her meds. I just wished someone would lock her up in an asylum until she got straight enough to function in the real world.

Kale Conner is the new councilman in town, he runs his father's business because his father is paralyzed. He has issues also, with his family and the town leaders. He is picked to keep Sarah away from anyone or anything that would tell her what is going on with the investigation of the murder of one girl and the disappearance of another.

It seems everyone in this town has secrets that they are afraid she will find out. From the hotel owner, to the preacher this is a town of unbelievable secrets and liars. Twenty years ago two other girls died in the same place only the MO was different. Their hearts were cut out. The chief is certain they are not connected.

I found the story very involved, with to many red herrings. There were to many people ready to kill someone and these were not nice people at all. I did not like anyone in this book, I kept waiting to start likeing the heroine or the hero at least but that did not happen. I really felt sorry for the serial killer and wished he had been worse and had taken out alot of the people in this book. As you can tell I feel I was taken for my time, money and interest in this book. If you must read it, get it from the library so that when you get tired of the BS you can lay it down without any problem.

A fine Manhattan-Maine romantic suspense thriller

NYC based investigative reporter Sarah Newton works for Truth magazine, traveling to locations in which the locals claim the supernatural committed murder; she debunks their mystical fears. However, Sarah is a loner who is used to people loathing her.

Sarah travels to freezing Youngstown, Maine where one teenage girl Valerie Gerard was found viciously sliced to death in a chapel and another Alicia Appleton is missing. Many townsfolk claim the curse has returned as similar murders occurred two decades ago. The City Council assigns lobsterman and newest member Kale Conner to escort the outsider around town; Sarah knows that means to help the town hide its secrets from her. As the police work the case, so does Sarah who soon begins to win over Kale to her side. Attracted to one another from the onset, they begin to fall in love, but neither has any hope for a future as he scorns her as a Manhattan pushy woman while she assumes he is her natural enemy although a dark secret from her own childhood closet is her real reason to keep him away.

FIND ME is a well written investigative romance starring a fascinating journalistic sleuth and a former dreamer. The story line is exciting from the onset as Sarah arrives alienating everyone. Kale is a strong character who gave up his dreams when his father became disabled; he goes from doubting antagonist to believer in his beloved. Sarah makes the tale work with her take no prisoners' attitude and her Pygmalion Effect of expecting no cooperation so acts offensively which leads to no cooperation, her family history, and her loner status that the lobsterman finds heartbreaking. Although the townsfolk do not seem very frightened or frantic over a vicious murder and a probable second killing fans will appreciate this fine Manhattan-Maine romantic suspense thriller.

Five Bookmarks from Wild on Books!

Sybil is a witch - just not a very good one. She doesn't know of any spells or magical recipes that she can use to better herself in the eyes of her coven. Stopping at a yard sale, she comes across a very old book and instantly buys it and takes it home with her hoping to find something in it that will help her become a more proficient witch. Sybil begins reading one of the spells and unknowingly opens a gate in the Shadow Realm inadvertently releasing demons into the world. Begging the goddess for forgiveness, Sybil is taken by Kenrick, a Shadow Guardian, to the realm where he and four other shadow guardians maintain order by controlling the gates to the demon world.

Unsure of why she has been taken to the shadow world, Sybil is confused but soon learns that the goddess has decided to take pity of her for her ignorance and in doing so gives Sybil her duties - she is to stay with the five Shadow Guardians and help close the gate she opened. To do this, she must become a warrior like the five men - only her initiation is a bit different. To stay in their realm and become a Shadow Guardian, Sybil must complete the ritual to prove her worthiness in the eyes of the five men. The ritual includes spending twenty four hours with each man doing anything required of her, including sex. Something that Sybil doesn't think she will have any trouble with but has no idea what to expect. Falling in love wouldn't be wise - especially now but Sybil's heart thinks otherwise and Kenrick is the man she wants above all the others. He seems to feel the same but he refuses to trust Sybil after having been deceived by a traitorous witch many millennia ago.

At first I was uncertain that Sybil would be able to keep her part of the bargain that she made with Inanna, the goddess. How many women would be able to keep up with five men? Well, it seems that Sybil is an extraordinary woman. She is strong, smart, and while afraid at times, she puts her best foot forward and in doing so, finds different things about each of the Shadow Guardians she spends time with to love. The men in turn, treat her respectfully but not with kid gloves. They are demanding, highly sexual, and each man has a totally different personality with various quirks added in to make even the coldest woman capitulate to their charms. Kenrick, however, is the Shadow Guardian that stood out for me. He is often snarly, is very alpha, and his trust level concerning Sybil is below zero. I enjoyed watching this primal man begin to fall in love - his confusion over his feelings for Sybil were realistic and very down to earth. His admitting he loved Sybil made me laugh in delight at how the mighty fall.

If hot sex with five sexy men is your idea of a fabulous book then CLAIMED BY THE WOLF is the book for you. Charlene Teglia has written an extremely erotic, sensual, and devilishly sexy novel with CLAIMED BY THE WOLF. The love scenes scorched the pages more than once but most of all, the plot was engaging and believable. Once again Ms. Teglia comes through with a superb story that I have had to read more than once. With one warrior succumbing to love, I can't wait to see what happens to the four men left!

Fulfills Its Purpose As Erotic Literature

Let's speak candidly here, with books like Claimed by the Wolf, the focus is more on the sexual encounters than dev eloping a plot. That is the case here. There is the background story of Sybil, a witch whose coven will not teach her magic, who finds an old book at a yard sale. When she reads a spell from the book, she unwittingly opens a gate in the shadow realm. To make a not so long story even shorter, she must help the Shadow Guardians, a group made up of a werewolf, a demon, a dragon, a vampire, and a fey, whose duty it is to guard the gates to the demon world. In order to help them close the gate, she must become a warrior like them. Apparently the way to do this is to be their sexual slave.

The sexual encounters overall were great- I give them five stars! There were times when the wording made me chuckle a little bit, but overall they were very graphic and explicit. Take note that there was a good deal of anal, dp, and a gang bang scene at the end, so if that sort of thing offends you and you want nothing but boy/girl missionary sex, do not read this book.

Overall, Claimed by the Wolf, was a good piece of erotic literature. There was very little plot and character development, so if you are looking for a story, I highly suggest you go elsewhere. But if you are looking for detailed and graphic paranormal sexual encounters, purchase this book. It will not leave you disappointed!

heated paranormal romantic suspense

Millenia ago long before the Sumerians existed, werewolves, dragons, vampires, witches, a rebellions demon tribe and the Sidhe fought against the demon and were evenly matched until the witches betrayed their cause by changing sides and allying with the demons. All the supernatural species in the battle died except the leaders of each species who pledged their lives and allegiance to the warrior and sexual goddess Inanna. They became her mark, giving them powers and become known as the Shadow Guardians who guard the portals so the demons don't enter this world and those that do are forcibly thrown back to their own realm.

The apprentice witch Sybil brought a Book of Shadows at a sale only to find out it contained demonic magic that entered her body. Lather. Rinse. Repeat

This was a hard read because it was so much like the previous books - there wasn't really anything new. Talk about a plot that goes nowhere - six books later and we're back to where we started.

Deirdre is back in Cairn Toul killing Mie (Druids with good magic) to feed her Drough (black) magic. She still wants to take over the world after she releases the warriors' gods, and kill or capture the MacLeod brothers. Even with all the sacrificing and blood letting poor Deirdre has been turned into almost a comedic character easily thwarted and her dialogue makes her sound like she's a dimwitted lackey instead of an evil mastermind.

Hero Broc wasn't much of a hero. The "woe is me" angst was there but I didn't really care considering how many people he murdered for Deirdre. The clinker for me was Broc and his association with Anice - heroine Sonya's sister. While out on a murderous hunt for Druids to fulfill Deirdre's blood thirsty magic, Broc found two little girls - Anice and Sonya - and took them to another Druid village to hide them. Later he would come back to check up on them. Broc is caught spying on Sonya by Anice and she puts the moves on him. He knows he should push her away but desperate for another's touch instead took her as his lover while his gaze was on Sonya. He admits it was wrong but his pitiful excuse - "I'm just a man" doesn't wash since women for coin were readily available. Broc is also concerned that he is cursed because every non family female he's ever gotten close to dies. Evidently Anice was expendable because he had no problem getting close to her even though he says it's Sonya who's always made his heart beat.

Heroine Sonya is a pity party waiting for a place to happen. She had no idea her sister even knew Broc until Anice was killed and she saw how Broc reacted. Thinking her magic has deserted her and feeling useless to the others in the castle, feeling betrayed by Broc and Anice, she takes her pity party on the road making Broc hunt her down. They both end of captured by Deirdre, escape, and go on the hunt for the next missing artifact to thwart Deirdre's evil plans.

Romance wasn't really there. There was a lot of lust ridden angst in Broc's and Sonya's internal dialogue but I never felt there was any love. There was no foundation for it to build upon and the thing with Anice was just swept into the background as if it never happened. That lack of resolution made the feelings between Broc and Sonya appear even more superficial - desperation built upon circumstance and danger - not love. They knew almost nothing about each other.

This series is now moving into the future. When Deirdre is pulled four centuries into the future by a strong, foreign magic, Logan, Ramsey, Camdyn and Arran decide to follow. Past, present, or future this series is over for me and if you've read any of the previous books - then you've read this one.

Another Amazing Read by Donna!

I have been infatuated with Broc ever since Wicked Highlander, when Quinn MacLeod was abducted by Deirdre and taken to Cairn Toul, the mountain where she kills Druids and uses her black magic to unleash the gods inside the Highlanders. The wyrran and Warriors gather there, waiting for the time when Deirdre will send her army to destroy the world. Broc played the good and bad guy so well, you never knew which side he was really on until recently. Broc has Poraxus, the God of Manuipulation bound to him and is the only warrior with wings and able to fly. His power is that he can locate anyone, anywhere.

Broc has been watching over Sonya and her sister Anice ever since he found them as babies and rescued them. He was one of Deirdre's Warriors back then so he hid them in a safe place where Deirdre could never find them. Being that Sonya and her sister are Druids, Deirdre would kill them to steal their life force. Broc has secretly been in love with Sonya ever since she became a woman but is determined to stay away from her. He believes himself cursed because any woman he has ever cared for has died and he's determined to protect Sonya from his curse. When Broc finds out that Sonya is gone from the castle he sets out to find her before Deirdre does.

When the last book "Shadow Highlander" ended, Sonya's life was turned upside down. Her healing powers have been failing her and her sister Anice was murdered by Deirdre's wyrran. Grief stricken over the death of her sister and heartbroken over Broc's harsh reaction, Sonya leaves the safety of MacLeod Castle and runs into the forest. Injured and not able to heal herself because of her failing magic, Sonya is in grave danger.

When Broc finds her, Sonya is near death with an infection from a cut on her hand. Because of a bad storm, Broc takes her to the nearest town and stays at a hotel to nurse her back to health. While there they run into Deirdre's wyrran and Broc is captured and taken back to Cairn Toul. Sonya follows and is determined to save Broc from Deirdre's wrath.

SO much happens in this book. I'm going to leave the review at this because this book changes everything in the series and leads into the new DARK WARRIOR series so I don't want to give away any spoilers. I've been waiting a long time to learn more about Broc and I could not wait for him to get together with Sonya and as always, Donna Grant did not disappoint. The ending happened a little too quickly but it's because the entire plot and story line have been taken into a new direction so it was understandable.

The DARK SWORD series is one of my top favorite series and always will be. I can't wait for the first DARK WARRIORS book, "Midnight's Master" to be released (which BTW is on May 22) to see the new journey Donna has sent these amazing warriors on.

Darkest Highlander, A Review for Tea and Book

Broc story is here!! I suppose I could just stop there.. Broc's story Darkest Highlander is the sixth in Dona Grant's Dark Sword Series and by far her most compelling. It was so intense, I was forced to put it down and walk away on a regular basis. Now, I know that sounds just wrong but for me.. when something is so gripping, when you are never quite sure what is going to happen next and when you are held on the edge of suspense.. to me I have to put it down and walk away.. or I go nuts. This was one of those stories.. I spent most of my time while reading this book on the edge of my seat.. chewing my nails and wonder what was going to happen next.

Broc has always been my favorite, he was broody, intense and BLUE.. well when his god took over he's blue and of course Broc is the only warrior with wings. And there is just something sexy about wings. I wonder what I would do if I actually met someone with wings? They are just so very sexy in books.

Broc spent centuries of his life, once his god was unbound as a spy in Deidre's fortress under the mountain. Forced to round up druids and deliver them to Deidre he never really thought he would find a way out. Then when the Warriors chose to stand together against her, Broc stood with them. Finally able to share his true feelings and loyalties.. he is a true asset to the Warriors.

Sonya, the strongest of the Druids had a crisis of faith and lost the use of her magic. Feeling lost, alone and just a little betrayed she flees the safety of the castle and strikes out on her own. I am not quite sure why such a practical character would do something quite this stupid but I kind of liked it. So many smart women find themselves doing stupid things then later asking themselves what the heck was I thinking?

Broc and Sonya find themselves in one adventure after another.. From Sonya fleeing the fortress and falling victim to wolves to Broc falling into Deidre's hands these two seem determined to save each other and yet never quite admit how they feel. Ms Grant does an excellent job keeping us entertained and hiding the fact that these two really do act without thinking just a bit too much.
Sometimes books tick me off because it is so obvious characters are meant for each other, I just want to smack them upside the head. The fact is if they did then the story would really pretty much be over before it ever began. And Broc and Sonya had a wonderful story..

We saw some interesting previews on what is going to happen next in the series and one whammy of a surprise. Obviously I can't share but this book was worth reading if only for the surprise..

“Close your eyes and picture it. Can you see it?”
I nod, eyes closed.
“Imagine it right there before you. See its texture, shape, and color—got it?”
I smile, holding the image in my head.
“Good. Now reach out and touch it. Feel its contours with the tips of your fingers, cradle its weight in the palms of your hands, then combine all of your senses—sight, touch, smell, taste—can you taste it?”
I bite my lip and suppress a giggle.
“Perfect. Now combine that with feeling. Believe it exists right before you. Feel it, see it, touch it, taste it, accept it, manifest it!” he says.
So I do. I do all of those things. And when he groans, I open my eyes to see for myself.
“Ever.” He shakes his head. “You were supposed to think of an orange. This isn’t even close.”
“Nope, nothing fruity about him.” I laugh, smiling at each of my Damens—the replica I manifested before me, and the flesh and blood version beside me. Both of them equally tall, dark, and so devastatingly handsome they hardly seem real.
“What am I going to do with you?” the real Damen asks, attempting a disapproving gaze but failing miserably. His eyes always betray him, showing nothing but love.
“Hmmm...” I glance between my two boyfriends—one real, one conjured. “I guess you could just go ahead and kiss me. Or, if you’re too busy, I’ll ask him to stand in, I don’t think he’d mind.” I motion toward manifest Damen, laughing when he smiles and winks at me even though his edges are fading and soon he’ll be gone.
But the real Damen doesn’t laugh. He just shakes his head and says, “Ever, please. You need to be serious. There’s so much to teach you.”
“What’s the rush?” I fluff my pillow and pat the space right beside me, hoping he’ll move away from my desk and come join me. “I thought we had nothing but time?” I smile. And when he looks at me, my whole body grows warm and my breath halts in my throat, and I can’t help but wonder if I’ll ever get used to his amazing beauty—his smooth olive skin, brown shiny hair, perfect face, and lean sculpted body—the perfect dark yin to my pale blond yang. “I think you’ll find me a very eager student,” I say, my eyes meeting his—two dark wells of unfathomable depths.
“You’re insatiable,” he whispers, shaking his head and moving beside me, as drawn to me as I am to him.
“Just trying to make up for lost time,” I murmur, always so eager for these moments, the times when it’s just us, and I don’t have to share him with anyone else. Even knowing we have all of eternity laid out before us doesn’t make me any less greedy.
He leans in to kiss me, forgoing our lesson. All thoughts of manifesting, remote viewing, telepathy—all of that psychic business replaced by something far more immediate, as he pushes me back against a pile of pillows and covers my body with his, the two of us merging like crumbled vines seeking the sun.
His fingers snake under my top, sliding along my stomach to the edge of my bra as I close my eyes and whisper, “I love you.” Words I once kept to myself. But after saying it the first time, I’ve barely said anything else.
Hearing his soft muffled groan as he releases the clasp on my bra, so effortlessly, so perfectly, nothing awkward or fumbling about it.
Every move he makes is so graceful, so perfect, so—
Maybe too perfect.
“What’s wrong?” he asks, as I push him away. His breath coming in short shallow gasps as his eyes seek mine, their surrounding skin tense and constricted in the way I’ve grown used to.
“Nothing’s wrong.” I turn my back and adjust my top, glad I completed the lesson on shielding my thoughts since it’s the only thing that allows me to lie.
He sighs and moves away, denying me the tingle of his touch and the heat of his gaze as he paces before me. And when he finally stops and faces me, I press my lips together, knowing what’s next. We’ve been here before.
“Ever, I’m not trying to rush you or anything. Really, I’m not,” he says, his face creased with concern. “But at some point you’re going to have to get over this and accept who I am. I can manifest anything you desire, send telepathic thoughts and images whenever we’re apart, whisk you away to Summerland at a moment’s notice. But the one thing I can’t ever do is change the past. It just is.”
I stare at the floor, feeling small, needy, and completely ashamed. Hating that I’m so incapable of hiding my jealousies and insecurities, hating that they’re so transparent and clearly displayed. Because no matter what sort of psychic shield I create, it’s no use. He’s had six hundred years to study human behavior (to study my behavior), versus my sixteen.
“Just—just give me a little more time to get used to all this,” I say, picking at a frayed seam on my pillowcase. “It’s only been a few weeks.” I shrug, remembering how I killed his ex-wife, told him I loved him, and sealed my immortal fate, less than three weeks ago.
He looks at me, his lips pressed together, his eyes tinged with doubt. And even though we’re merely a few feet apart, the space that divides us is so heavy and fraught—it feels like an ocean.
“I’m referring to this lifetime,” I say, my voice quickening, rising, hoping to fill up the void and lighten the mood. “And since I can’t recall any of the others, it’s all I have. I just need a little more time, okay?” I smile nervously, my lips feeling clumsy and loose as I hold them in place, exhaling in relief when he sits down beside me, lifts his fingers to my forehead, and seeks the space where my scar used to be.
“Well, that’s one thing we’ll never run out of.” He sighs, trailing his fingers along the curve of my jaw as he leans in to kiss me, his lips making a series of stops from my forehead, to my nose, to my mouth.
And just when I think he’s about to kiss me again, he squeezes my hand and moves away. Heading straight for the door and leaving a beautiful red tulip behind in his place.

I didn't hate it but I didn't love it either. When I was finished reading the book I was left feeling empty handed. I felt that there could have been more romance or positives in Ever and Damen's relationship in this book since it took so much in the last book (not to mention the past six hundred years) for them to get where they are. But no this just went right back to the same struggles of them being torn apart and so on.... it also had so much going on at the end that it kind of built up to not much at all... I started skimming through the pages at the end just trying to get through it to get to the point, and then when I got there I felt disappointed to find the end result.
All and all if you enjoyed Evermore then I do suggest you read Blue Moon, however I do hope that the Author allows Ever and Damen to progress a little more in their current relationship in the next book instead of spending the entire book with them just trying to find a way to be together without actually allowing them be together at all... If that happens again I think I will become bored of the cycle and give up on the series?? But as of now I'm still a fan.

Blue Moon: A disappointing sequel

I read Evermore about three weeks ago and was very excited when I learned Blue Moon, the sequel, was being released in early July of 2009. I liked Evermore, despite the obvious plot-related similarities it shared w/ Meyer's Twilight series. However, when compared to Twilight, I think it falls short of the Twilight standard. Having said that, Noel's Immortals series still has a lot of potential, so I am holding out hope that Shadowland's plot will surpass my mediocre expectations.

I gave Evermore 3.5 stars, but unfortunately, can only give Blue Moon 3 stars, awarding it simply because I found Noel's writing style very good.

Having noted the author's obvious talent, I feel this sequel left much to be desired in regard to the overall plot. Here's what I felt was missing:

The storyline was very short-sighted. Two-thirds of the book revolved around one major event - and the "problematic" event became very dull and blase after a while. I found myself speed reading just to finish the book, not really paying much attention to the minimal details, but more so trying to get to the underlying point of it all. Noel writes very well for the most part, but I felt too many sentences began with "And..." which became quite redundant.

Also, Ever's character was under-developed and important details surrounding her psychic abilities left the reader wondering how she managed to do a variety of things. On a handful of other occasions, Ever's thoughts just pop out, without warning, which was odd since the book is written from her perspective (It was written in first-person so the reader should have been privy to everything Ever was thinking). First-person writing is far more revealing - the reader is usually fully disclosed by the narrating character.

For instance, Ever eventually tells Ava that she thinks Damen is being "poisoned" by way of his elixir of immortality. Was the reader supposed to come to the same conclusion, because Ever never had this thought prior to disclosing the info to Ava. Granted, she knew Roman was somehow involved but this was the first she revealed her true thoughts on how Roman was at fault. I found Ever's sudden disclosure rather odd and under-developed.

Also, much was left completely unanswered.

The reader was left wondering how Ever managed to transport herself, or jump around at times, particularly after she chose to go back to her "former life" and then instantaneously ended back in the current one after seeing Riley in the backseat of her parents' car. It was a total contradiction to the time continuum that was previously implied; no explanation was given.

EVERYTHING revolved around three main characters - and the characters themselves were under-developed in my opinion. The book was just one constant dilemma, from beginning to end, no alternate and/or related events occurred simultaneously. The storyline was very one-dimensional for me throughout.

Finally, the biggest blunder of all, the one that sealed the deal for me and made me cringe and dislike several aspects of the book altogether, was the frustrating ending. The entire book read like a never-ending soap opera and it ended on the same depressing note!

The entire book read like a soap opera, where as, the endless dilemmas were merely replaced by more dilemmas, all centering around the two main characters and their struggle to be together! Rather than create an entirely new scenario, possibly uniting the two characters in love, the author decides to continue the current struggle: that Ever & Damen simply cannot be together - at least not in the way they desire. One dilemma was replaced by yet another dilemma - all of which prove to be thorns in Ever & Damen's relationship!!! Books that end on a note of frustration don't end very well in my opinion - it leaves the reader very little to look forward to in a sequel. :(

Here's what would have made the story better for me:

1.) Had Damen come in and out of consciousness - had he fought Roman's control and revealed his true self to Ever from time-to-time, and not just in incremental glimpses, I would have enjoyed his character more. The reader realizes Roman was controlling Damen, as well as controlling the rest of the school; however, it just seemed odd that Roman could pull it all off so effortlessly. I thought Roman had too much control given Damen's immortality, not to mention the fact that Damen never saw Roman coming?! That was also odd. This was frustrating to me as a reader. Had Damen been somewhat aware of Roman's motives but struggling to resurface his true self in order to encourage Ever to keep seeking the solution, I would have found the dilemma more interesting. Damen just turned arrogant instantaneously, and that irritated me despite Roman's involvement. It also made the story less realistic, and didn't fully explain Ever's behavior.

2.) Riley just up & disappeared. I realize she "crossed over," but the only mention of her was on the brownie & then from Romy & Rayne. Yet, there were no other signs, and Riley was a pivotal character from the onset of the series. I think the story would have been better had Riley been more involved by leaving more written signs here and there.

3.) Ever fell for Roman's trickery in the end - despite all he did to her? It seemed odd - even under the urgent life-and-death circumstances - that she would choose to trust him after everything he had done and said.

4.) Ava up and disappeared? What? That was unexpected in a negative way - I wanted to see true friendship emerge, as well as trust and loyalty from a handful of characters, not betrayal and distance from everyone. Ava's actions were a huge disappointment. Seems like aside from Ever's deceased sister and a handful of acquaintances in Summerland, she has no one to rely on and trust. Ava's role could have been so much more invaluable and meaningful in the end - Riley could have sent a message through her, for example. I was sad Ava's character fell short of truly positive traits.

5.) Finally, I would have preferred a better ending to the first dilemma. I would have preferred that a new dilemma arise after Ever saves Damen, rather than a slightly different continuation of the old; the new dilemma was just another version of the first one: the inability to physically touch one another. A huge part of the enjoyment of the book is the obvious physical connection between the two of them, & now that this is the new dilemma, I actually kind of dread reading the sequel. I hope the problem is resolved early-on b/c I certainly don't want the next book to be all about resisting their physical attraction for one another!!! Not appealing at all. Surely, there is more substance ahead than this. We can only hope for the best, I suppose.

Well, I think I liked Blue Moon better than Evermore, and that's only marginally. I thought Evermore was too much of a Twilight wannabe and to me, that's not a book you want to emulate (well maybe the books sales and movie deal but that's it). So I was hesitant to get Blue Moon, and then when it started in on all the, "Oh Damen is so perfect..." or "Damen is so beautiful..." I nearly tossed the book out of the window. But then the middle started getting interesting. I liked the parts about manifestations and having the power to bring forth whatever you desire. I believe in that, though not to the extent of instant manifestation, but I think Noel had some pretty deep stuff in there. It made the plot solid and this quest Ever was on more believable.

However...

It seemed to fall short at the end. I felt like the twist with the cure and Ever's blood preventing them from touching at all, was only to ensure a third book. The series could have ended nicely with this book and have them consummate their love and be done with it. I can pretty much tell that the main conflict in book 3 will be finding a way for Ever and Damen to be together in the physical sense.

One of my pet peeves with this book was some of the writing. I didn't think it was as bad as some have said, but I wonder if Noel did a simple ctrl + F to look for all of her repeat phrases. The number one repeated phrase that got on my nerves was "I press my lips together." Ever is constantly doing this and it's SO over done that it stands out like a sore thumb. I noticed it in the first book and thought somehow she would catch it in this one, but alas...it did not happen.

So I'm giving this 2 stars mainly because I thought the beginning was a bit annoying with all the over the top love and gooiness, the middle was good, and the end fell flat. If Amazon allowed, then I'd give it 2 and a half stars.
