About the Author
Robert W. Strayer (Ph.D., University of Wisconsin taught African, Soviet, and world history for many years at SUNY College at Brockport, where he received Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence in Teaching and for Excellence in Scholarship. In 1998 he was visiting professor of world and Soviet history at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand. Since 2002, he has taught world history at the University of California, Santa Cruz; California State University, Monterey Bay; and Cabrillo College. He is a long-time member of the World History Association and served on its Executive Committee.

Great book, very useful

I've really enjoyed teaching this text, and my undergraduate students have consistently praised its readability and its utility. I like both volumes, but the premodern text especially gives a helpful basic narrative of global history, and it's been fun to work in secondary sources to complement the textbook and included documents. As an East Asian historian, I find other reviewers' claims of Eurocentrism a bit tough to understand here. Perhaps some citations would help? For my part, I found it really balanced and well-written. And, let's be honest - a less expensive text is in everyone's interest, and the brevity of this work helps it fit into a standard semester.

Very good book and a very interesting and fun read... our class is lucky to have gotten to use this awesome book !

Strayer does an amazing job in this text book to show how Civilization began from Hunting and Gathering peoples to the modern age where farming and the establishment of Cities had to be adopted to maintain order in these large complex societies. He also does a good job in clarifying some of the negative connotations that are implied when the term "Civilization" is used...
I'm fortunate to have been able to purchase and use this text for a class :D !
