Evil Eclairs: A Donut Shop Mystery (Donut Shop Mysteries), by Jessica Beck

Donut shop owner Suzanne Hart admits her sweet treats don't exactly qualify as health food. But does she really deserve to be labeled a "killer" by local radio jockey Lester Moorefield? The annoying host is urging citizens to boycott Suzanne's "deadly dough" factory―until he's found dead himself, stuffed with one of Suzanne's éclairs…

Everyone in April Springs knows about the feud between Lester and Suzanne, which makes her the number-one suspect. She tries to use the donut defense―donuts don't kill people, people kill people―but that cream-filled éclair at the scene of the crime has the whole town filled with suspicion. If Suzanne can't figure out who killed the radio star, she'll soon be filling a prison cell instead of a pastry…

death by pastry
By A Customer
April Springs, North Carolina is the location of the well known Donut Hearts; owned and operated by Suzanne Hart. Her store is turning a profit, but not by much. As she prepares to go to sleep, she hears controversial radio talk host Lester Moorefield call her product poison and labels her a killer for selling unhealthy food. He finishes his diatribe with calling for a boycott of the "deadly dough".

Furious, she goes down to the station only to see him smoking a cigarette. Her shouting at him lets everyone know they are feuding. Later the cops escort Suzanne to acrime scene where Lester created his show. The police chief questions Suzanne as someone murdered the radio jock leaving a Donut Hearts' éclair stuffed in the victim's mouth. Business slides as some of her customers believe Suzanne is the killer. To regain her reputation and save her shop, she and her friends Grace and George investigate only to find a horde of suspects with viable motives; many of whom she respects and likes.

Perhaps the only warning needed for the latest Donut Shop mystery (see Sinister Sprinkles and Fatally Frosted) is not to read it on an empty stomach because each chapter contains a recipe for a type of donut. A romantic subplot between Suzanne and her State Police boyfriend Jake enhances the tale (just think what he must be putting up with dating a donut baker). Readers will admire the spunky heroine and her loyal sidekicks as they investigate death by pastry in a cute Carolina cozy.

I LOOOOOOOVE THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!
By Andrea
"Evil Eclairs" - Donut Shop Mystery.

This is one of those series that is not for everybody. It is cozy, warm, comfortable, fluffy. If this is not your type, then please do not read. We are all different, and we like different types of books. I prefer this type of mysteries: the cozy, loving, homy, warm, secure & comfortable over the non-cozy, dry, more serious and less loving, cold, uncomfortable type.

In this particular book, "Evil Eclairs", Suzanne Hart, the main character, is determined to the find the killer. Someone is murdered and her eclair is stuffed down his throat. Did someone put it there to make it appear as though he choked on Suzanne's eclair? Or did he really choke on it? Either way, it doesn't look good on Suzanne. Will customers continue to come to her donut shop? Or will they be frightened by that eclair? How will Suzanne pay her bills and make her living if business slows down because of that eclair?

Suzanne's friend, retired police officer George, as usual, helps her to solve the murder. Is he safe? Has he gone too far for Suzanne? George is a true friend of Suzanne's, and will anything for her.

Suzanne and her best friend Grace interview suspects and do some interesting sleuthing. Emma, Suzanne's assistant, manages to run the donut shop by herself when Suzanne is sleuthing. I love and admire Emma. She is young, but yet responsible and mature and trustworthy. I "imagine" her as the bouncy, attractive, pretty, full of youth and energy type, but also has a good head on her shoulders. Emma will go far and is the type that will be a good mother when the time comes.

Characterization is done really good. I feel as though I know these characters.

I especially love Suzanne's mother. She loves Suzanne so much. The love in that house is so thick, you can feel it in your bones (and in your heart) when you are reading the book. I feel that cottage (that Suzanne and her mother live in) is a thick block of pure love. Go inside (actually, as soon as you get on the porch) and you are transformed. All hatred stays outside and you are a different person. I can literally feel the love in that house. It is more than just a building; it is a home in which you are protected and safe from all danger and harm. I loooooove Suzanne's mother.

This series has gotten a lot of negative reviews. But like I said earlier, it is not for everyone. But you should know whether or not you are the type that prefers the cozy, fluffy, loving, comfortable, warm mystery series or if you prefer the more solemn, serious mystery series. And if you are not sure, you can always try one, and if you don't like it, you don't have to read anymore. (If you don't like one in the series, you probably wouldn't like the others, either.) So if don't like one, I wouldn't recommend you continue on.

Suzanne Hart runs a donut shop called "Donut Hearts" and this series is one of the coziest, warmest, homiest, most comfortablable, most loving series I've ever read.

Highly recommended if you enjoy this type of books.

Evil Rumors
By J & L Rigod
A nasty radio personality does a editorial opinion piece on our favorite donut maker, Suzanne's "Donut Hearts" in April Springs, that leaves, us, the readers, incensed. You can imagine Susanne's feelings as a call for boycotts are issued.

As Suzanne reminds us "donuts don't kill people, people kill people," but April Springs isn't quite so sure about that when the nasty man turns up dead with an eclair at the scene! Rumors are rampant and they are truly evil.

I really like this series. I enjoy the gentle, laid-back, feel of the Southern living in April Springs. I enjoy the relationships of our Sleuth and her family, friends, romances.

This was a good book and I'm ready to read "Tragic Toppings."
