Deserves More Than 5 Stars

This book was one of best true crime books that I have ever read. Chris Coleman was married to a beautiful lady named Sheri and they had two precious little boys named Garett and Gavin. Chris was head of security for Joyce Meyers Ministries. Chris' parents are Ron and Connie, and his Dad is a preacher. Sheri came from a broken home. Chris' parents did not approve of Sheri. They thought she was beneath him. Sheri's family welcomed Chris, although they thought he was standoffish.
For several months Chris had been receiving threatening letters and emails in regards to his family. The letters and emails made it appear that it was because of his job as head of security for Joyce Meyers Ministries. Chris notified law enforcement of the threats.
On 5 May 09, Chris left his home around 5:45 am for the gym. While away from home, he had tried several times to reach Sheri to give her a wake up call but was unable to reach her. Fearing for his family's safety he phoned his neighbor Justin Barlow, who was a detective with the Columbia, Illinois Police Department and asked him if he would check on his family.
Detective Barlow informed the dispatcher on the radio and requested backup. In the upstairs bedrooms, they found Sheri, Garett and Gavin all had been murdered. There were other things that transpired prior to the murders, including Chris having an affair with Sheri's best friend from High School.
This is one of the saddest and most captivating books I have ever read. I cried while reading parts of the book, and it made me angry while reading other parts. I was especially angry at the total disregard that Chris' parents seemed to have regarding the death of their daughter-in-law and 2 grandsons.
If you are a true crime buff, this book is a must read, but keep a box of Kleenex close by.

Excellent True Crime Book

I am partial to this type of true crime book - it has all the elements that I find interesting - an arrogant and selfish husband who must think he's good looking; his mean-spirited "religious" parents who use fire and brimstone to run their church and blindly think that their son is innocent; a beautiful wife and mother Sheri who wants to stay married to this creepy guy; two incredibly photogenic and darling sons who pay the ultimate price; and a girlfriend (who couldn't wait to become Mrs. Chris Coleman) with zero morals who is probably lucky that this all stopped with Sheri because she might have been next. What a story! I think the author Michael Cuneo put together a really great book. It's a sad tale of lust and its aftermath. The picture in the book of the beautiful wife Sheri and her two sons Garrett and Gavin is haunting. Really good book - I will look for this author again.

A stunningly good book

Incredible. Gut-wrenching, heart-breaking, and incredible. I've rarely been impacted by a book as much as I was by this one. I pretty much had to pick myself up off the floor just to post this review. It's that good. It really is that good.
First, the crime itself.
There's not many things as abhorrent or incomprehensible as the central crime of One Last Kiss. After six months of plotting and preparation, a husband and father steals into the bedrooms of his wife and children and pitilessly kills them, one by one, as they waken and thrash for their lives. He murders his family, spray-paints obscenities onto their lifeless bodies, and then casually heads to the gym for an early-morning workout. Why does he do it? He isn't battling insanity or depression. He isn't a drug addict, an alcoholic, or a career criminal. In fact, he's the privileged son of pastor parents and the head of security for Joyce Meyer Ministries, one of the largest televangelizing operations in the country. He has a big house in the St. Louis suburbs, a beautiful wife, and two healthy young sons. He seems to have it made. Instead, however, of thrilling to his own success, he transforms into the most loathsome kind of monster. Why does he do it? A simple reason. He's become tired of his current wife and wants a new one. He's been having an affair with a dog track waitress from St. Petersburg, Florida, and wants to be married to her instead. He wants the prospect of limitless happiness and so kills his entire family to seek it out.
This, on its own, in abbreviated form, is heartbreaking enough. After becoming acquainted with the central characters of Michael W. Cuneo's engrossing narrative, however, it's nothing less than devastating. Sheri Coleman, especially -- the doomed spouse of Chris Coleman and the mother of Garett and Gavin -- comes to life in these pages. She's charming, ebullient, and kind. The reader prays for things to pan out for Sheri Coleman even while fully aware that she's in for the absolute worst. This, of course, is a testament to the storytelling, which ranks amongst the best I've read in the true crime genre.
It's the last section of One Last Kiss, however, that puts it over the top. The killings at the core of this book appear, at first, to be incomprehensible, and yet Cuneo manages to make some sense of them. Examining the peculiar elements of Chris Coleman's life, from his Golden Boy upbringing to his immersion in the prosperity Gospel, he manages to make some sense of them. I found this section compelling and, ultimately, convincing.
I'm not sure that you're going to find many true crime books better than this. In fact, I'm almost positive that you won't. It has the feel of a classic.
