The Great Awakening: A Brief History with Documents (Bedford Cultural Editions Series), by Thomas S. Kidd

A detailed examination of the First Great Awakening, this volume presents a valuable study of the spiritual movement that profoundly shaped colonial American cultural and religious life. Thomas Kidd's comprehensive introduction relies on recent scholarship to describe three contemporary views of the revivals: those of radicals in favor of them, moderates supporting them, and antirevivalists attacking them. The views and experiences of these participants and critics emerge through nearly 40 documents organized into topical sections. By expanding coverage of the radicals and the ordinary people, including women, African Americans, and Native Americans, who joined the revival movement, Kidd gives students an opportunity to hear a broader collection of voices from colonial American society. The volume also includes illustrations, headnotes to the documents, a chronology of the Great Awakening, a selected bibliography, questions to consider, and an index.

Review
" An informed and much-needed synthesis of the events that comprise the ' Great Awakening.' Judiciously describes evangelical efforts from Nova Scotia to Georgia over the entire eighteenth century and demonstrates the centrality of these revivals to an understanding of the American mind. Kidd' s book will become the standard introduction to its subject." -- Philip F. Gura, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

" It has been fifty years since Edwin Gaustad told the history of New England' s Great Awakening, and, since then, the revivals themselves have at times been almost lost sight of in debates about the fictions of memory and the invention of tradition. Thomas Kidd' s narrative, returning squarely to the formative events and factions that shaped early evangelicalism, offers a valuable synoptic account of the beginnings of this continuously important movement." -- Leigh E. Schmidt, Princeton University

" With this deeply researched and beautifully focused study of the origins of American evangelicalism, Thomas Kidd gives us nothing less than a fresh, post-revisionist understanding of the Great Awakening. But that is not all. By casting a powerful light upon the controversies at the outset of the evangelical movement, particularly those revolving around the third person of the Trinity, he illuminates the rest of that movement' s conflicted history, providing insight into its enduring complexities, and its likely manifestations in the century ahead." -- Wilfred McClay, author of "The Masterless: Self and Society in Modern America"

"Despite the prodigious attention to the 'Great Awakening' in eighteenth-century America, there has been, amazingly, no modern comprehensive account that looks at all regions from Nova Scotia to Georgia. The result is a highly fragmented series of vignettes and biographies with no overarching narrative. That void has now been more than filled by Thomas Kidd''s masterful analysis of the eighteenth-century revivals and the 'evangelical' movement they spawned. Thoroughly researched and beautifully written, this book is must reading not only for early American historians, but for anyone concerned to understand the origins of modern evangelicalism."--Harry S. Stout, Yale University

Unusual format - but interesting book
By T. Cotham
I've never read a book that is laid out the way this one is. It has a "brief history" and then the text of the original documents referred to in the "brief". This book discusses the changing attitudes regarding the way religion was being taught in the mid 1700's- opposing the traditional "preach from the pulpit" versus a trend toward large outdoor "revivals". The traditionalists felt the revival was too casual and way too raucous to teach the respect and responsibility "the church" deserved. The revivalists saw a needed niche for bringing the gospel to workers who lived away from the town centers. Some also found that the "revival" experience of these Americans was no less "religious" but had a more real and lasting influence. After a period of waning interest in "the Church", Americans were coming back to the fold through the revival. The words of the likes of George Whitefield spoke to the individualism that came to be the hallmark of the colonial American.

Another Excellent Addition to a Great Series
By Rodney Thomson
Like the Bedford Series in general, this book might be described as a sort of "summary on steroids". Giving historical background followed by actual documents of the period, the reader is provided a much deeper and more meaningful perspective of the subject than that found in most textbooks. This book reveals a lot about a time in American history which few people know anything about. I had picked it up after reading Nathan Hatch's "The Democratization of American Christianity", which discusses in magnificent detail the Second Great Awakening. If I had to do it over again, I would read the book being reviewed first, as it provides valuable background that is ultimately relevant to Hatch's book.

Regardless, it stands on its own as a fascinating glimpse into early American Christianity.

Cheers!

Big book with so many things going on
By Amazon Customer
I was surprised with the size of the book. We have other Bright Baby books and this is about 5x the size of the ones we have. This is definitely not a book you can throw into a diaper bag for a day out. My daughter also likes putting her book on her lap when she "reads" and this one she struggles with.

I initially bought this to introduce my almost 2-year old to her ABCs but the alphabet in this book is condensed to 2 pages which looks waaay too busy and overwhelming.

On a positive note, this is definitely a book that my toddler will be able to use for a couple of years. It has first words, colors, opposites, numbers, shapes and travel (roads, buildings, beach, etc).

Excellent book for little ones
By Ana & Ben
This is a wonderful book for a little one, my daughter loves it, the bright colors and photos keep her intrested. It is a great learning tool to have. The book has 8 different sections, first words, my ABC, my numbers, colors, opposites, shapes, time, and our world. Each of the sections are two pages long, except for time and our world, those two are only one page long. This is not an ideal travel book because of its size, it is much bigger than other Priddy books we own, but an excellent book to have for at home learning. I highly recommend the book for any family with toddlers. So if you are looking for a good quality learning book this is a good one for you. I hope my review was helpful to you, if it was pleas click the button below.

One of best Introductory Books for Toddlers
By Farhan K
We purchased this for our 18 m.o son who simply loves this book! He would pick up the book and bring it to us several times a day to 'play' & have him point words. Initially we thought he was a bit behind in his words vocabulary but after using this book we were amazed the number of words he is able to accurately recognize from the book.

Content & Presentation
------------------------------
- This book is so full of colors from edge to edge, that let alone toddlers even we found ourselves attracted to it
- The actual 'first' words introduced are sensible everyday good to start with words like (Cat, Ball , Fish, Common Shapes etc)
- The layout of the book is designed with toddlers in mind with no distracting text, page numbers etc.
- Pages 1-2 consists of easy to start, identify common words
- Pages 2-4 consists of introduction to the English Alphabet with illustrations
- Pages 4-6 consists on introduction to counting and numbers
- Pages 7-8 introduces common colors
- Pages 9-10 introduces a bit advanced concepts like opposites
- Pages 11- 12 introduces to common shapes & their associations to real world objects
- Page 12-14 Introduces different times of the day like (bedtime etc & the world outside ( City, Forest etc)

Size, Material & Binding
-------------------------------
- Its is large in size, similar to coffee-table books which makes a perfect first book for toddlers
- It is made of thick hardcover and it pretty well bound and should be able to withstand rough handling by toddlers, however I still did stick scotch-tape on the first and & last pages as they were beginning to show signs of tears after two weeks of rough use

Final Thoughts
----------------------
This definitely has to be one of the best thing that you can do for your son/daughter when he's learning to speak , they are not only going to love learning from this brightly colored book as parents I guarantee, just like we did , that you are going to have some cherished and funny moments along the way. Highly Recommended.

From School Library Journal
Starred Review. Grade 6–9—Eric Hayes has moved from Ohio to Long Island, NY, with his mother and younger brother. His schizophrenic father left long ago. Eric soon meets Griffin Connelly, a handsome kid with natural leadership, lots of charisma, and a real mean streak. While Griffin is the perfect bully, David Hallenback is the perfect victim: beaten down and willing to do anything to get Griffin's approval. At first, Eric is a bystander, not participating in the bullying but not doing anything to stop it. However, several events move him out of this passive role: Griffin steals from him and reveals Eric's confidences about his father; adults at school address bullying; and Mary, a girl he likes, takes a stand against it. Eric realizes that his silence makes him complicit and speaks out, only to become Griffin's next victim. Preller has perfectly nailed the middle school milieu, and his characters are well developed with authentic voices. The novel has a parablelike quality, steeped in a moral lesson, yet not ploddingly didactic. The action moves quickly, keeping readers engaged. The ending is realistic: there's no strong resolution, no punishment or forgiveness. Focusing on the large majority of young people who stand by mutely and therefore complicitly, this must-read book is a great discussion starter that pairs well with a Holocaust unit.—Connie Tyrrell Burns, Mahoney Middle School, South Portland, ME

“Preller has perfectly nailed the middle school milieu, and his characters are well developed with authentic voices. The novel has a parablelike quality, steeped in a moral lesson, yet not ploddingly didactic. The action moves quickly, keeping readers engaged. The ending is realistic: there's no strong resolution, no punishment or forgiveness. Focusing on the large majority of young people who stand by mutely and therefore complicitly, this must-read book is a great discussion starter that pairs well with a Holocaust unit.” ―School Library Journal, starred review

“Bullying is a topic that never lacks for interest, and here Preller concentrates on the kids who try to ignore or accommodate a bully to keep themselves safe. For Eric to do the right thing is neither easy nor what he first wants to do, and the way he finds support among his classmates is shown in logical and believable small steps. Eminently discussable as a middle-school read-aloud, [with] appeal across gender lines.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“Preller displays a keen awareness of the complicated and often-conflicting instincts to fit in, find friends, and do the right thing. Although there are no pat answers, the message (that a bystander is hardly better than an instigator) is clear, and Preller's well-shaped characters, strong writing, and realistic treatment of middle-school life deliver it cleanly.” ―Booklist

“Plenty of kids will see themselves in these pages, making for painful, if important, reading.” ―Publishers Weekly

“An easy pick for middle school classroom and school libraries, this book is a worthy addition to collections focused on bullying and larger public libraries, especially those with an active younger teen population.” ―VOYA

“If Judy Blume could write a book about Little League, about its players' deepest fears and secret dreams, it might come out something like this.” ―Publishers Weekly, starred review on Six-Innings

“Dishing up a rare example of a character-driven tale that is also suspenseful and exciting, [Preller] chronicles a magnificent championship game between two Little League teams that is as much about the players as the plays.” ―Booklist, starred review on Six-Innings

“Following the play-by-play builds suspense and brings the reader right into the action and the special world of baseball and the people who love it.” ―Kirkus Reviews on Six-Innings

“A tale of baseball, friendship, growth, and coming to terms with hardships, this fast read will grasp any reader who enjoys sports.” ―School Library Journal on Six-Innings

“This is a book whose emotional pull creeps up on you, pitch by pitch....Like the boys on the field and in the press box, readers will feel this is a game to remember.” ―Shelf Awareness on Six-Innings

A Real Page Turner
By Jennifer Steil
I know I've found a good book when I hit the end of a chapter and just have to read on. Bystander is a real page turner. Whether you're a teen, a teacher, or a parent, reading this book will remind you how important it is to have a no-tolerance view of bullying. It is so easy to tell a teen to "ignore" the bully. But as Eric Hayes experienced, it's not that easy. Especially when you're trying to fit in.

Bystander is filled with suspense. From the first chapter, when Eric sees David Hallenback running scared across the basketball court, to the end it is hard to put the book down. Teens will connect with the situations and characters and this will surely open up conversations about what's right and what's wrong.

Bystander by James Preller - A "Must-Read" in All Upper-Elementary and Middle School Classrooms
By Elizabeth A. Dolan
As educators, we are always looking for a sure thing; something you know will work. When we find it, we need to shout it from the roof tops! So, I shout, "Here it is! Find this, buy this, read it to your class, share it with your teacher friends. Read it with kids. Make sure kids read it!"

If the true job of literature is to help us understand the human condition, pick this up, read it and discuss it! Discuss it with any child availalble for learning. Work on reading comprehension, bullying prevention/intervention with this very real, very relevant, very important read on a very real, very relevant, very important topic. Educators everywhere will be applauding Mr. Preller's efforts efforts on this one!

A Great Read - Will Give Kids Plenty To Talk About
By Matthew Ball
Bystander is a great read for middle schoolers, their parents and their teachers. Boys and girls will find characters in it that they relate to, and the issues that are raised will give them a lot to talk about.

Eric Hayes, like any new kid in town, is worried about finding his place and fitting in. From the first page, you feel the tension of Eric's struggle to make new friends and avoid trouble. And the main source of tension comes from Griffin Connelly, a scheming, manipulative bully. Unlike the stereotypical dimwitted bully, Preller makes Griffin believable, and therefore, all the more frightening - he's a popular seventh grader at Bellport Central Middle School. The plot has plenty of twists and turns as it follows Eric through the difficult first few months at his new school. Young readers will love this book, placing themselves in it scene by scene, wondering what they'd do if they were Eric.

Preller has got kids down. He knows how they think, how they talk, how they maneuver through the challenges and confusions of middle school life. Kids will love the humor that runs through the realistic dialogue and school scenes, even as they feel the tension that comes along with being a target, a bystander, or a bully.

An important and timely topic - this book should hit a big public nerve.

One of the Best Lucy Books Ever
By Tee
This is a wonderful profusely illustrated book on the life of the great star Lucille Ball. One of the few books to look at her full career, not just her television success, it has many rare photos from her exceptionally long film career as well as her pioneering television work. The back cover color photo of a 30ish Lucy is worth the price of the book alone!! One of the top five books to own on this wonderful woman.

I think this is a wonderful item to purchase if you are looking for something ...
By Nita Sukul
We are using this to teach our four year old to read and write. We have many different products to get him interested but nothing seemed to make an impact. I can't begin to explain how excited we are about this book because now our son looks forward to learning time and has even started reading a few of the words in the book. I think this is a wonderful item to purchase if you are looking for something to jump start your child's writing and reading abilities.

good overall
By Leslie S Hester
The book is nice and sturdy. The only comaint I have is that the pen it comes with does not wipe off easily. It requires vigorous scrubbing. My 3-year-old son doesn't mind the black smudges all over the pages, but I would like it to erase cleaner.

I bought several different ones (same brand) and learned the hard way that the markers aren't interchangeable...just and FYI...if you use a different type of erase marker than it came with...it may not erase

best book for basic sign and cards great for expanded sign vocab
By Lyla J. Woodward
This book is the best I have found for teaching very young children basic signs. As a developmental therapist/early interventionist, I use this book with many children I work with ages birth-3 with developmental delays. The book itself is great for children under 2 as it has one item/action pictured per page along with a child and an adult doing the sign for the picture. The included flashcards are awesome for children who have a few signs/words and need to work on an expanded vocabulary.

Great for toddlers learning to talk.
By Karla
We don't use the signing part of the product, but use the picture and word flashcards with our toddler. They are colorful pictures that catch is eye. Also there is only one picture per card, so he understands easier what we are referring to with each word we say.
Great cards.

I wish I could find another baby signing kit this good
By Erin R. Lipkind
I bought this baby signing kit at the Safeway Grocery store bargain book bin for about $4.00. I picked it up on a whim, and am so glad I did. This is the best baby sign kit I have found (I am now looking for a similarly exciting set of cards to expand my daughter's vocabulary, with no success. If you have any suggestions let me know). My 15 month old knows all the signs and is obsessed with carrying the cards around everywhere she goes. She mixes signs and verbal words to communicated in two word sentences. This has seriously increased her ability to have conversations with her parents, family members and caregivers and for all of us to understand her needs and wants. The best part about this card set is that on one side is a person demonstrating the sign with a description of how to make the sign, and on the other side is a labeled picture of the object being signed, often with a baby in the picture (which anyone who knows babies will appreciate that babies like to look at other babies). The cards are colorful and high interest for babies. The board book is good too, just limited in how many signs are displayed.

Another great "My Big..." book!
By another busy mom...
The "My Big Dinosaur Book" is a great addition to the Big Ideas for Little People series of books (we also have the Trains and Trucks books). Both of my sons love these books -- my 5 year old STUDIES every name, picture, and category and has been reading the Dinosaur book every day since he received it. My 3 year old loves to look at the pictures over and over.

The photos have realistic and colorful models of each dinosaur, most of the full body (a few have just the face). I do agree that pronunciations would be really really nice to have. The heavier board-book style makes it very durable, especially for little ones who are prone to tearing out pages.

This is a must-have addition to the library of any young dinosaur fan!

Will Pique Toddlers' Curiosity in Dinos Etc., But Could Have Been Better
By ReviewerWhoPrefersToBeAnonymous
Excluding the covers, this sturdy 10.5"x10.5" board book has about 40 photos of realistic models of extinct reptiles set against bright solid color backgrounds. There is minimal text (dinosaur names, headings such as "Peaceful plant eaters" and "Weird and wonderful," and questions like "how many horns does Chasmosaurus have?"). It's attention-grabbing.

So far so good, especially for toddlers who have an interest in dinosaurs and their ilk. Unfortunately:
- Despite the book's title, it has some non-dinosaurs. Quetzalcoatlus was a pterosaur (flying reptile) and Macroplata was a plesiosaur (marine reptile).
- Some of the photos are of the same model, yielding two Baryonyx, Chasmosaurus, Iguanodon, Leptoceratops, Nodosaurus, Ouranosaurus, Parasaurolophus, Riojasaurus, Ultrasaurus, Wannanosaurus, Zephyrosaurus, and others. Instead of duplicate genera, it would have been nicer to see more genera like Albertosaurus, Ankylosaurus, Apatosaurus (formerly known as Brontosaurus), Brachiosaurus, Dilophosaurus, Giganotosaurus, Oviraptor, and Spinosaurus.
- There is no pronunciation guide.
- Almost half the photos show only the dinosaur's head. We never get to see the entire Tyrannosaurus rex, for example.
- Three photos sadly leave out interesting items at the ends of dinosaurs' tails. The photo of Euoplocephalus omits the tail club. Stegosaurus and Kentrosaurus aren't the same when you can't see their tail spikes ("thagomizers"). Except for the "Funny faces" spread, it would have been better for the book to have full-body photos.
- The relative sizes of the animals are difficult to appreciate. Velociraptor looks as tall as Allosaurus, but the former was the size of a beaver and the latter the size of a rhinoceros.
- The name "Stenonychosaurus" is used twice; however, the name of this dinosaur since the late 1980s has been "Troodon."
- "Yingshanosaurus" has never been officially described in the scientific literature and the fossil's "whereabouts are unknown," but it was reported to have spines extending from its shoulders which are absent here.
- The full-body and head photos of Xenotarsosaurus show "devilish" horns just above the eyes. It's too bad that no one has ever located the head of this creature.
- If you look up the article "The dinosaur Hadrosaurus foulkii, from the Campanian of the East Coast of North America, with a reevaluation of the genus," you'll see how little of the skeleton was found. So the model of Hadrosaurus (used for two of the book's photos) may be quite inaccurate (especially the head).

If you can live with the aforementioned issues, buy this book from Amazon.com! Otherwise, I suggest The Usborne Big Book of Big Dinosaurs as a first nonfiction book of dinosaurs for young children.

ready to learn about dinos
By Katyann Driver
I got this book for my daughter as she really enjoys dinosaurs a lot so I thought this would make a nice learning book for her. Each page describes different features of the dinosaurs and shows good photos of them. I really like there is such a wide variety of dinosaurs that it shows features and which are herbavores and carnivores. The book is really thick heavy duty each page is really thick which was awesome in my opinion as so many children's books are poorly made this is not at all. Overall this is awesome quality and made to last so I would highly recommend this for a fun gift for any dinosaur lover young or old it is ideal.

From Booklist
Reviewing Back of Beyond (2011), we wrote that Box’s short-fused Montana cop, Cody Hoyt, had series potential. Well, he’s back, along with other characters from that book, for a creepy thriller about a serial killer whose job as a long-haul trucker provides the perfect cover for his crimes. Cody has just been fired for planting evidence, and it was his own partner, Cassandra Dewell, who caught him. But then teenagers Danielle and Gracie Sullivan—the same girls he helped rescue the last time out—are abducted en route to a Thanksgiving reunion with Cody’s son, Justin. Can Cody and Cassie work together to find the girls in time? Box’s Joe Pickett series has, over 13 installments, been nearly perfect. But his stand-alones have been a mixed bag, from the stellar Blue Heaven (2008) to the forgettable Three Weeks to Say Goodbye (2009). This one’s somewhere in the middle: Box handles his large cast of characters capably, but, despite the chilling and timely scenario, the usually sure-handed author never quite gets our hearts racing. --Keir Graff

Another great ride from C.J. Box
By Vickie T.
The bulk of the story in The Highway takes place with the span of just two days, so the action and suspense move quickly into high gear and stay there. But, the author also manages to fully develop some interesting, complicated, and in some cases, very scary, characters along the way.

I do not like books that are too gruesome. Once I started reading The Highway and realized what kind of a bad guy we were dealing with, I started worrying about what I was in for. Much to my relief, Box managed to walk a fine line between presenting enough detail to horrify me without pushing me over the edge to "I can't read any more of this."

I love a book with plot turns that surprise me, and The Highway did - twice. It also introduces a new character, Investigator Cassie Dewell of the Lewis and Clark County Montana Sheriff's Department, who I hope we will be seeing more of.

Some of the characters in The Highway were introduced in a previous book, Back of Beyond. However, there is absolutely no need to have read Back of Beyond in order to fully enjoy reading The Highway. I highly recommend this book to all fans of C.J. Box and to anyone who likes an action-packed suspenseful thriller.

Sadist in a semi - good action story but very, very brutal and dark
By Blue in Washington
A non-Joe Pickett novel that reprises the character of Cody Hoyt--the Montana cop from an earlier stand alone story. This one is about serial killers targeting prostitutes and female runaways and it is very violent. While the protagonist here is a woman, much of the work is given over to a criminally insane cross-country trucker who styles himself "The Lizard King", and his sick-in-the head partners. "The Highway" is written with C.J. Box's usual flair for a quick moving story line and strong good/bad characters, so longtime fans of the author will not be disappointed in that context. It does not feature the western landscape and interaction with nature that are a big part of the Pickett books.

In my case, I almost took an early exit from the "...Highway" because of its extreme victimization of women. At the outset, there is a detailed account of a stalking/killing that is stomach-turning. The author may have intended to bring a big problem (the random killing of prostitutes) to the surface and the book certainly serves that purpose; but many if not most of the female characters here are unintelligent, unpleasant, or otherwise life's victims of some kind or another. This includes the protagonist with respect to victimization. For me, the dark side often overwhelmed the action story. There are often murder and mayhem in the Joe Pickett series, but somehow they're in balance with the rest of the story.

So, overall, if sadism is not your thing, give this one a miss.

Never get a ride from a stranger!!
By Byron
C J Box revives some characters from BACK OF BEYOND to populate this thriller of a mystery story. Once I realized that this is NOT the same style as my favorite Joe Picket books, I quickly got engrossed in this fast passed story that covers only a couple of hair raising days in a few people's lives. Evil travels the highways and I might just need to avoid highways for a few days until I get my breath back!

Cody Hoyt, ex-alcoholic policeman, has bypassed the law again, for all the right reasons, but bypass them he did. This has given his purely politically minded boss just the excuse he needed to fire Cody. Unfortunately, Cody's new rookie partner, Cassie Dowell, was sent to spy on Cody to provide the evidence of his wrongdoing. As a single mom, she felt obliged to follow through, but she also felt terrible doing this to a man she truly respects for his record of closed cases.

As Cody and Cassie moan their situations in a local bar, Cody breaks his sobriety. But a couple hours later, Cody's son, Justin, calls to tell his Dad that Justin's girlfriend and her sister have gone missing while they were traveling the highways to Justine's house for Thanksgiving. Cody leaves to check out the situation, even though he no longer has "cop status". Cassie, on her own time, mans the computer to seek information. After a few hours, communications for Cody stops also, and Cassie goes on the search for answers. Troubles they will find, as pure evil shows it's ugly face.

This is definitely a darker story than other C J Box books, but the thrills and "issues" are definitely shining through in this story also. The book is populated with deeply flawed characters whom you will root for, and also with purely evil characters whom you wish never existed in real life---but , unfortunately, they do exist. Fortunately for me, Box manages to give just enough descriptions so that I "got the evil" without lots of gratuitous descriptions of blood, gore, and excessively described pain. The "possibilities" that Box describes are so reasonably likely, that it made my mind race for possible solutions. I love that Box tells a great story, which also makes me think, as well as just enjoy his great mysteries. Could this be a future new series for Box? let's hope so!!!

Good textbook
By M. Robinson
This is a good textbook in that the facts are condensed and their is very little editor opinion. However being so condensed does mean that more detailed information will need to be researched for essays and exams. Overall I would recommend this to anyone wanted a good history book.
