Thirty-odd years ago, adventurer and environmentalist Turk (Cold Oceans) watched his dog root around in newly thawed dirt and jump wildly in response to some primeval scent in the earth. In that moment, Turk had a clear vision that the margin between life and death depends on a tactile, sensory awareness of the environment that incorporates but also transcends logic. Although he gradually forgot this lesson, it came hurtling back to him one day in July 2000 when he met Moolynaut, a Siberian shaman who introduced him to the Other World and the ways it impinges on the Real World. In prose by turns ponderous and lively, Turk narrates his journey to Siberia, the people he meets, and his introduction to the mysterious Moolynaut, who seems, like Shakespeare's Prospero, to have created a storm that washes Turk and his companion onto the shore of her village. Eventually, Turk finds himself standing naked, balancing on one foot, holding his right hand behind his back and pointing straight in front of him with his left arm as Moolynaut heals his fractured pelvis. During these moments, Kutcha, the Raven Spirit, teaches Turk to see that the Other World and the Real World are united. In what could have been an intriguing memoir but instead is mundane and uninspiring, Turk unconvincingly rehearses many of the mantras of New Age spirituality magic—even as he offers a breathtaking glimpse of life in a small, forgotten Siberian village. He and his Russian friend have no intention of visiting the village of Vyvenka on the Siberian peninsula of Kamchatka, home of the Koryak people, but a sudden storm forces them ashore, where they learn that they’ve been expected by Moolynaut, a healer and shaman in her nineties. She not only frees Turk from physical pain but also guides him into the realm of the Arctic spirits. An unusal and touching Arctic quest!

You should see my copy of The Raven's Gift. The spine is bent out of shape from reading the book in bed; some pages have food stains on them from reading the book in restaurants (nachos and books should never be enjoyed at the same time); and the book's cover is worn from being stuffed in and pulled out of my travel bag. In other words, The Raven's Gift has been a great companion!

I assume people reading this review will already know, in general, what The Raven's Gift is about, so I'm not going to repeat that information here. Instead I'll say this: The book will surprise you. It will make you care about a culture you've never heard of before. It will challenge your belief system. You'll never look at a raven the same way again. You'll definitely laugh, and you might even cry.

Jon Turk is a wonderful writer. His words flow off the page, making it easy to enjoy the story without being distracted. Even readers in warm climates will find themselves reaching for a sweater as they follow Jon on this unusual and touching Arctic quest.

Uncannily observant

Jon Turk is a scientist and adventurer who has, among many accomplishments, paddled the length of Kamchatka (recounted in a Mar/Apr 2001 Russian Life article by his late wife, Christine Seashore) and the Pacific Rim. Jon Turk is also a gifted writer and storyteller.

Turk the scientist was not inclined to mysticism. But it was thrust upon him when a series of "chance" events near Vvenka (where Kamchatka Peninsula meets the mainland) led him to be miraculously and inexplicably (in the rational world of modern science) healed by a Siberian shaman, Moolynaut.

Turk recounts his journey through nearly a decade of life, centering on repeated visits to Moolynaut, exploring the lines between this world and the next, between modern culture and Koryak culture, between himself and the world around him. As one Russian friend tells him:
"You are a poor traveler in the Other World... You must make a long, hard journey... in the Real World. You will be hungry and tired. Then maybe, if you are lucky, you will find what you are looking for."

It is well worth joining Turk on his journey to find what he is looking for. He is uncannily observant and perceptive, self-effacing, sensitive, and quite often very funny.

About the Author

LEE A. JACOBUS is professor emeritus of English at the University of Connecticut and the author/editor of popular English textbooks, among them A World of Ideas: Essential Readings for College Writers, Seventh Edition (Bedford/St. Martin's, 2006); and The Longman Anthology of American Drama. Professor Jacobus has written scholarly books on Paradise Lost, on the works of John Cleveland, and on the works of Shakespeare, including Shakespeare and the Dialectic of Certainty. This book is huge, I bought it for a class, but it has saved my butt more than once. There are some great classic gems in this anthology and highly recommend it just on the collection hidden inside. I do not believe there is a bad play in the entire book. It has also come in handy when I was taking other acting classes and needed specific types of scenes or it can also be a stepping stone in finding good monologues. Very heavy book, but fantastic stuff inside. Love this book.

Ade Patience has done what he was told he couldn't. He's broken the rules, used his powers to save a life. And no good deed goes unpunished. . . .

Senior year finds Ade and his girlfriend, Vauxhall, deeply in love, indulging themselves with wild dates and exploring their newly strengthened abilities. Only Ade isn't as happy as he should be. When Ade realizes that his involvement with the Pandora Crew is due to his absorbing some of Jimi Ministry's abusive childhood, he discovers that the only way to rid himself of the infectious memories is to erase his past. And it just so happens that the one guy who can do that lives a few blocks down the street.

The procedure works. The "Jimi cancer" is cleared out. But when Ade returns to his life, he finds that changing the past has changed the present. Vauxhall has no idea who he is and he has to woo her all over again. And it won't be easy. There are three other people vying for Vauxhall's attention. Three other guys he has to literally battle to win her back. The worst part: they're all twisted versions of Ade.

Erasing the past has dramatically altered the present and Ade must join forces with his former rival to defeat . . . himself.

ONE
Hey, Heinz—
Awesome seeing you at the swim meet this past weekend. Can’t believe I almost came in third. No doubt that was due to some of the astral plane stuff you’ve been doing. Keep it up, brother! At this rate, what with all the lesser demon saliva and minor devil bones, I’ll make the city B finals this spring.
Anyways, I’m writing to get your advice. I’m in a major bind here.
Let me try and explain it up front, just give you the background, before I get to the actual problem. I’m hoping you’ll be sympathetic. Can’t imagine that most folks who become Satanists didn’t mess around with other forms of antisocial behavior as kids.
There’s this crew. They call themselves the Pandora Crew and really it’s just two dudes. Both of them are total morons. Both of them are like me, gifted, and yet neither of them does anything more than “foment revolution.” That’s their deal: chaos for the sake of chaos. Anyhow, I somehow wound up in Gordon’s and Jeremiah’s orbits. Actually, that’s not true. It wasn’t somehow. These guys used to hang with the LoDo Diviners. They were part of the scene like two years ago. Clean-cut and productive, though I still don’t know what abilities they actually have. Both were kicked out by Gilberto and that’s when I met them at a show at the Blue Bird. We got to talking. One thing led to another. Now I’m a part of the crew. Now I’m doing the most unbelievable stuff and it’s only getting worse. It has only slightly been illegal so far. No one’s gotten hurt, I mean.
But soon it’s going to cross a line. That line.
I can just tell.
Here’s the thing: The stuff we’re doing, it makes no sense. It’s just destructive and wild and fearless and, honestly, I’m loving every minute of it. It’s liberating and I don’t know why. This isn’t me, Heinz. I’m not this guy. Sure, when I was knocking myself out every other day, crashing cars and diving off roofs, that wasn’t the sanest business either. But I don’t do that anymore. I’m not that person. I’m stable. I’m sophisticated. And when I did that concussion stuff it was for a reason. It was for the future. This? This is just nihilism.
And I kind of like it. My abilities, now they’re boring in a way. Just touch someone and see their future, it sounds totally exciting. It sounds incredible. But it isn’t. Think about the people you know. The guy who checks your bags at the grocery store or the chick who drives your bus. The mall security guard. The ticket guy at the movie theater. None of these people have surprising futures. Bumping into them, the future you see is like spending a weekend watching the Home Shopping Network. Predictable. Dull. I’m longing, really, for a concussion. To see myself back in action and not everyone else.
Thing is: I’ve promised myself I wouldn’t. I promised Vauxhall.
The Buzz is gone so what’s the point, right?
That’s why there’s something about being out with the Pandora Crew that kick-starts my demon. A new Buzz. Something I’m calling the Delirium ’cause that’s honestly the way it feels. You know me; I’m not religious. But the feeling I’m getting when I do something so out of control that it hurts to even think about it is like nothing I’ve felt before.
I think I’m possessed, Heinz.
Seriously.
I need you to help me exorcize myself.

TWO
I’m having a great evening.
And by great, I mean I’m with Vauxhall.
We have dinner at a steak place downtown.
Nice place. Nicer than kids our age, kids like us, should be allowed in.
That’s because it’s the first of the month.
Date Night.
Tonight, the steak house dinner scene, is Foolish Romance.
We’re both dressed up. Over-dressed up.
Vaux’s wearing this prom gown that she found at a yard sale. Orange and frilled and gaudy and all bejeweled. The story we made up is that this monstrosity was from the late ’70s and was worn by a faded starlet. Maybe her name was Marjorie. Or Babette. To fit the dress, Vaux has her hair curled. She’s also got makeup caked on.
Me, I’m wearing a sky-blue suit. Have my hair all slicked back. Also alligator-skin boots just to knock the look out of the ballpark.
Last Date Night we went to the art museum on a moped. Raced through traffic, screaming and hollering. We decided this particular Date Night should be called Head Over High Heels.
Me in a tux and her in a slinky red dress.
At the museum, on the third floor, we sipped from a flask I snuck in and sat and talked in front of a sculpture of an enormous duck that had a swastika on its side. Modern art, right? More people took cell pictures of the two of us than of the duck.
Month before it was the race to the airport.
We called it Heart of the Party.
Vaux was at the airport, sunglasses on and suitcases packed, and she was in line, ready to buy a ticket, when I came barreling down the concourse in one of those golf carts. I acted all panicked and the guy who was driving it, the employee, he jumped right out and just let me drive. He shouted after me, “Go get her!” And I did.
I drove that cart right up to the line she was standing in and jumped off it and ran over to her and we hugged and kissed like we thought we might both die and everyone around us just burst out into applause.
We ran off hand in hand, all the travelers hooting and hollering.
You see, this summer Vauxhall and I have decided that we’re going to live Hollywood. We’re going to live in a Romantic Comedy World.
She came up with the idea.
She said, “In all those terrible romantic comedies, there’s always this one scene, usually right before the big fight that happens at the eighty-minute mark, where the couple has some amazing, jet-setting date. Like they fly to Paris and sip wine beneath the Eiffel Tower or they go to San Francisco and hang glide to a picnic on a hill in the Mission district. They always look amazing, so happy and in love. That’s the Hollywood moment and you never, ever see it. Right? I mean, you’re never downtown and see one of those couples race past you, all decked out, on a Harley or in a biplane? Well, we’re going to be that couple this summer.”
So far, so good.
You should see the way people look at us on Date Night. It’s like we’ve flown in from another dimension. Like we’ve stepped off of the stage for a life among the audience. Demigods among the mortals. We are the story that people go home and tell. The story they try and finish.
For one night, we are the stars. We are the people no one really knows.
The people who, for the most part, don’t even exist.
Even better, we are the story they’ll tell tomorrow over breakfast.
The one they’ll post online.
The one they’ll sigh about when they’re lonely.
Tonight, Date Night number four, Foolish Romance, is going just swimmingly. Despite the getup, we’ve decided to keep the drama on the low end. Just us being dressed up and being out. Just us happy being in love. And eating.
We finish our crab wonton appetizers when Vauxhall leans forward and puts her hands on mine, smiles, and says, “You weren’t at Jimi’s birthday party this morning. I didn’t say anything to you but did you forget?”
“Shit!” I smack my forehead. Fake. Totally exaggerated but I do feel bad.
“Yeah, he was bummed.” Vauxhall pulls her hands back from mine.
“I forget a lot of things, Vaux. It’s kind of like my thing. You can’t just expect—”
“He’s your brother.”
“Yeah, exactly. My half-brother. The same half-brother who I didn’t know existed until four months ago. Same exact half-brother who not only stole my childhood but tried to make me kill him so I wouldn’t exist anymore.”
Vauxhall says nothing. She’s so disappointed.
“Look … I’ll give him a call later, okay? I’m sure he’s not sobbing over it or anything, right?”
Vauxhall shrugs. That means that I don’t get it.
I try to change the subject, move us on. “Have you seen Paige this week?”
Vaux nods. “Yeah, of course.”
“Well I haven’t. I don’t know what it is but ever since she started dating, like really dating, it’s like she doesn’t have time for me anymore. Remember how we used to watch our shows and just—”
“No. I wasn’t there, Ade. Remember?”
“Right. Okay.”
Then she gets this serious look. Like a cloud passing over the sun.
“What’s going on?”
“What do you mean?”
“You know. You, you’re different. Ever since you started hanging out with Gordon and Jeremiah. What’s funny is that I’m used to you being forgetful, but this is different. This isn’t you forgetting things, it’s you purposely not remembering.”
“How can you purposely not remember something?”
“Ask yourself.”
I groan. “Why isn’t it okay for me to hang out with other people? I mean—”
“Don’t even. Don’t even start that. I’m not keeping you in a cage, Ade.”
And like that Date Night turns into Fight Night.
This had been happening lately. Neither of us wants to admit it, recognize it, but we’re starting to get all crabby. Me, mostly. It’s like we’re becoming an old married couple. Only in high school. Only when we’re not even eighteen yet.

action-packed high school age science fiction thriller

In his senior year, Ade no longer uses concussions to achieve the Buzz and see the future as he has found love with Vauxhall (see Future Imperfect). Still he feels something is missing since he stopped knocking his head so he joins the Pandora Crew oracles who use Delirium to cause chaos.

Ade remains discontented and believes mostly this is because he absorbed the abusive memories of Jimi. He needs them deleted so he turns to the Glove who can alter the past. When Ade emerges from the Glove's successful treatment, he learns his beloved Vauxhall does not know him. Feeling he will win her affection, Ade is shocked to find rivals competing for the love of his life; all are him.

This is an action-packed high school age science fiction thriller that grips the audience from start to finish in which reality proves fleeting. Fast-paced, this is Ade's tale as he seeks the metaphysical future and changes his past. Vauxhall, the other Ade personas, the Pandora Crew, the Glove and others enhance his actions. Although the science behind the time travel and changing of the past is basically ignored, fans will appreciate Ade's awesome adventures in the past, two presents and the future.

This is the sequel to FUTURE IMPERFECT, though I think PAST CONTINUOUS is even better than the first book. If you are a comic book reader this is the perfect novel for you to read. The story moves really quickly-- and is completely unpredictable. And Ade is the perfect modern "super hero".

About the Author

Roger Priddy left school at 16 with just one qualification―in art. He went to Berkshire College of Art and Design and trained as an illustrator. His first job in children's books was working with the publisher Peter Usborne, at Usborne Publishing, and then he worked with Peter Kindersley at Dorling Kindersley, where he spent 16 years. Priddy became Creative Director of DK's Children's Division and was Managing Director of the children's mass market publisher Funfax when it was acquired by DK.

In 2000, he created Priddy Books with John Sargent at St Martin's Press to create innovative and imaginative titles for children, from first books for babies through early reference titles for older children. Since then, over 30 million copies of Roger's 200 plus books have sold worldwide, with five of his books―My Big Animal, My Big Truck, Happy Baby Words, Happy Baby Colors and Puppy and Friends―each selling over one million copies. He is also the author of Big Board First 100 Words; Big Board Books Colors, ABC, Numbers; and Bright Baby Noisy Monsters. His creativity has been recognized with numerous industry awards. This was everything we hoped, except the books last 2 pages were repeated. This is a goto item for one of our children, and it makes it disappointing to have repeat pages (when read on the 1,000th time!)

The concept of course is great - pictures for babies to learn from. However, the photos themselves were not creative or really very pleasing to the mind. You can take a picture of a jacket and it is just a jacket - but you could spend a little of thought and make that jacket so appealing you would want to wear it. Vegetables are great for kids to learn, but you need to picture them in an appetizing way, not just a photograph of a piece of broccoli against a white background. I think a right brain person created this book - you need to turn on your left brain and be creative in your pictures.

About the Author
Robert W. Strayer (Ph.D., University of Wisconsin) taught African, Soviet, and world history for many years at SUNY College at Brockport, where he received Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence in Teaching and for Excellence in Scholarship. In 1998 he was visiting professor of world and Soviet history at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand. Since 2002, he has taught world history at the University of California, Santa Cruz; California State University, Monterey Bay; and Cabrillo College. He is a long-time member of the World History Association and served on its Executive Committee.

Great book with detailed insight of world history

Being given this book for my AP World History class, I can say that this book is a great source for the course. The content is easily understood, goes into great detail, and extends to further detail in the documents section of each chapter.

The only drawback is a physical defect of the book itself, which seems to be universal of every copy in the class. The very first page of the book with content (the map page) has a noticeable tear in the seam. All students reported this, although no one's book is really falling to pieces.

From a very young age, Boteach explains, men are bombarded with messages defining success "exclusively by money, power, fame, and preferably a corrosive amalgamation of all three" (think Donald Trump); for the average American man, this definition results in a deep but hard-to-pin-down sense of failure that stains his perception-of himself and his environment-and inevitably corrodes his relationships, "bringing down the American female and family with him." Boteach, Rabbi of Oxford University, author of Kosher Sex and star of the Learning Channel's "Shalom in the Home," offers a detailed prognosis of the current state of the American family based on his work with families facing familiar crises (constant fighting, depression, anorexia, sexless marriage), "approximately 70 percent" of whom suffer from "Broken American Male syndrome." The book's first third takes a hard but sympathetic look at the syndrome's symptoms and effects (such as waning libido, empty ambition, escapism and substance abuse); the middle third examines underlying causes ("soulless capitalism") and collateral damage ("The Inadequate American Female," "The Uninspired Child") on the way to chapters providing sound advice and practical solutions-beginning with a "New Definition of Success," one measured "by the quality of our relationships." Though rooted in Judaism, Boteach's lessons are applicable to anyone hoping to understand and overcome feelings of failure in themselves or their loved ones.

Fascinating, but incomplete

This fascinating book rang true most of time. There were lots of "aha- so that's why they act like that" moments. I do think that the book is incomplete. He spends most of his time discussing men who measure their success or self-worth based on money. Perhaps this is because he lives in New York and, by his own admission, knows many people who work in Wallstreet. Most of the performance-driven men I know are not measuring themselves by money, but by accomplishments, recognition, and the geek-cool-factor. He does not touch on how performance-driven self worth has been passed on to women. (If Daddy pays more attention to money or accomplishments than to "feminine" persuits, darling daughter is going to focus on money or accomplishments). While that is arguably outside the scope of this book, he does spend considerable time discussing the effects of a performance-driven man on his family.
He also doesn't touch on the arrested development that seems to afflict some men. This would be the 40-year-old that still lives at home and spends his time watching movies and playing video games. Or the man in his mid-30s that does just enough enough work to keep him supplied with ramen noodles and a season pass at the ski resort. I would dearly like to know what is going on in their brains. That said, I loved the book, and am passing it around to friends and family.

Great topic, decent execution

After catching a few episodes of his TV show, I felt like Boteach "got it" in the way that Dr. Drew and occasionally Dr. Phil got it. He has the ability to cut to the core of the issue, understand when people are acting unhealthily and are unafraid to point fingers. The book confirmed my initial impression. Boteach is definitely onto something about male culture. His analogy of women and eating disorders and then men and workaholicism is apt. They are both a result of a tendency to apply internal identity to external factors. A woman feels she is as worthy as her beauty and a man as special as his wealth. No question, modern culture perverts many natural urges to unhealthy access--and we often examine how that effects women but rarely do the same for men. His book finally does this.

If there is any criticism to be leveled at this it is the mass of generalizations, feel-good assertions, and unsupported idealism. Look, men's behavior is not totally a result of culture. The traits he derides in the book existed long before man had developed to ability to speak, let alone build office buildings. To think that it could all go away with a few parenting changes is ridiculous. And as always, religion (namely the bible) is a poor place to found any theory. Being that he is a Rabbi, he rests heavily on scripture and the notion of "G-d." In this instance, I think he could have made an equally persuasive case without it. He didn't and the book suffers. I would recommend a few ev psych books to balance Boteach's words with some science such as Sperm Wars, The Evolution of Desire or even The Moral Animal.

Regardless, if you're a young person, you should read this before you go the way of your parents generation. And if you're older, maybe it's not too late to turn it around.

Much needed advice for the modern American male

The only male role models many American men have these days are people on TV. Imagine if we all lived like most of the greedy philanderers we see on TV! What kind of a culture would this be? What would happen to the American family? If you have kids, I doubt that's the kind of society you would want them to grow up in or the people you want them to become!

A lot of men feel like failures because they don't have a new girlfriend, car, boat, house, etc. every so often. Men like me who are committed to their family aren't living the "cool" life as seen in the movies and on TV (though the celebrities aren't either, and that's why so many of them are addicted to drugs and/or alcohol). And so sometimes a man asks himself, why do I make this sacrifice? I'm getting old, my hair is falling out, my belly is getting bigger (not that we can't help that), and I'm barely caught up on my bills! It takes a book like this to make a man realize he's acting like a wimp.

I personally understand the pressure in our society. TVs are everywhere! They tell you that you don't have enough and are not good enough. Bimbo male celebrities have become the role models! Our nation's leaders aren't doing a very good job of being role models and neither are many religious leaders. Many of them are getting in trouble for having affairs and stealing money. We have TVs now in the break room at my work, in the gym, and I get to see tons of advertisements on billboards on my drive to and from work. It's hard to just shut the media off and start living once again. But if you want to be a good father, husband, and not spend the rest of your life in vain pursuits and depression, it's something you'll have to do. Read this book and pass on the advice to your children.

And yes, Rabbi Shmuley is religious and his ideas are old school in many ways. Yes, he does believe the feminine is greater than the masculine. If those things offend you, this book won't help you much.

Rabbi Shmuley's tone may seem a bit harsh in this book, but it's written for men. His assumption is that male readers probably won't break down and cry because he's being so mean.

This book is good for both Jew and non-Jew alike. Though I felt it should have been shorter, I liked it enough to give it 5 stars.

Too Much of a (Potentially) Good Thing?

ELEMENTS OF ARGUMENT was selected as a textbook for a second-semester English composition course that I instructed for our local state university in the waning days of 2006. More or less the first half of the 866-page book is an instructional textbook and the second half is a collection of essays from a wide variety of authors from classical to contemporary.

Generally speaking, I found the textbook portion to be clearly and logically written, presenting in ten chapters most of the considerations involved in writing persuasive essays. These chapters include annotated essays that illustrate the processes of presenting a claim, supporting it, and being aware of the assumptions--the warrants--that affect both writer and reader. Additional short essays at the conclusion of each chapter are accompanied with generally good writing prompts for practice in writing short papers in response to the readings. Following these chapters are sections dealing with the writing of research papers and with citation formatting in both MLA and APA styles.

The numerous essays that are anthologized in the second half of the book vary greatly in length, topic and style. Throughout the entire book, contemporary essays tend to address topics of importance and interest to today's audience: racial categorizations, cloning, church-state separation, terrorism, rising college costs, torture, divorce, and so forth. The editors do not shy away from contentious subjects, and for that they deserve applause.

Let us look at the value of the book from two perspectives, first as it may be used in a controlled classroom environment and then as it may benefit an independent, nontraditional learner who is engaged in self-improvement.

As a textbook for a course in general composition, the book's focus on argumentation, or persuasive, writing obviously limits the focus of the course itself. Perhaps what is needed is a whole series of composition courses, each focusing on a different aspect of writing, of which persuasion is one valid type. In such an environment, ELEMENTS OF ARGUMENT would be, I feel, a fine textbook for the persuasive writing course. Alas, today we are lucky to get university students through no more than two semesters of composition, and much of that time must be spent in remedial grammar study. In this situation, I think our students would be better served by textbooks that combine composition instruction with a variety of literature types so that students can practice emulating more than just persuasive writing. Furthermore, it has been my experience that many schools change textbooks between the first semester's instruction and the second, even though most of the textbooks are entirely adequate in their scope and length to be used for both semesters. This means that fully half of each textbook goes unread, a terrible waste considering the cost of these texts. Under these practices, cutting the book in half so that students purchase only the instructional part, i.e., the 465 pages of the first ten chapters, would be a vast improvement and a benefit to students faced with increasingly insurmountable textbook and tuition costs.

Now, addressing the independent, self-motivated learner, I suggest that if one wishes to improve one's skill in persuasive writing, this is not a bad book with which to do it, although a skill such as writing effectively requires practice in doing, not simply reading about how to do it. The book is not designed as a self-help text, but reading the first ten chapters closely would certainly do no harm. As for the additional essays in the second 400+ pages, if one enjoys reading essay-style writing, this collection is sufficiently varied so that one can surely find quite a few essays to one's liking. Personally, I find that essay-reading becomes tedious after a while, and I long for at least a good short story if not a book-length work, fiction or otherwise-and I do believe that continual reading of a variety of literary styles does indeed help one improve one's writing, merely by exposure to interesting, well-constructed sentences. I doubt that I would find the motivation to read ELEMENTS OF ARGUMENT from cover to cover just for pleasure.

On an ending note, I found the associated CD, "I-Claim: Visualizing Argument," as well as the instructor's notes in the back of the textbook to be of very limited usefulness. I cannot truthfully say that inclusion of the CD enhances the value of the book to any appreciable extent. In short, if one is particularly interested in studying persuasive-style writing, at least half of the book may be of value; otherwise, I would invest my reading dollars elsewhere.

Very dry

Had to use this for my english class and it's very boring to be perfectly honest but I think it also has soemthing to do with the material it's presenting. That said, when the examples come along, it starts to become a little bit better but it's still not great. I don't know how it could improve but it was very boring.

Okay, nut not what I was expecting

The one really good thing about this is that it shipped really quickly. Other than that, I was disappointed in the quality of the book. It was listed as being in great shape, but when I got it, the cover was torn, and the edges of the laminated cover were all peeling up.
