Discourse on the Origin and Foundations of Inequality among Men:

A provocative essay that challenged the superiority of civilized society and modern government, Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Discourse on the Origin and Foundations of Inequality made him an outcast among fellow Enlightenment thinkers but stands today as one of the most important political texts in Western history. Helena Rosenblatt's new translation, introduction, and selection of related documents help students comprehend why Rousseau's criticisms of human nature, political hierarchy, and private property were so controversial in his time yet later were hailed as a foundation of democracy. The introduction explores life experiences that shaped Rousseau's philosophy, explains contemporary ideas about political authority and social order, and guides students through Rousseau's thought, including explanations of how his work anticipated theories about evolution and inspired leaders of the French Revolution. Related primary documents -- including a selection from Rousseau's Social Contract -- situate Rousseau's ideas in contemporary political and social thought. Questions for consideration, a chronology of Rousseau's life and work, and a selected bibliography enrich students' understanding of the man and his times.

A book lacking a great deal.

Before reading this book you have to understand that Rousseau wrote the book leaving out the existence of God and His creation and His influence on His creation of man. So everything that he wrote after the beginning of his book is without the thought of God and His effect on the man He created. Man was never created a savage until he rejected God and even then Gods existence in itself kept man from becoming a complete and thoughtless savage. Man would come and go as far as evil heart would let him. Remember man was born into sin because of Adam and Eves original sin man can become rather savage in his actions unless that man begins to depend upon the God that created him. But man was never born a savage or else he would never have become any more civilized than the ape. So man being created above the ape was already more civilized than him. So man developed differently and faster. Man can sometimes act like a savage or worse but he was never created one. This review was created by Tarheel an Amazon customer in good standing,thanks.

Worthwhile read
By Pax Romana
"The civil law being thus become the common rule of citizens, the law of nature no longer obtained but among the different societies, in which, under the name of the law of nations, it was qualified by some tacit conventions to render commerce possible, and supply the place of natural compassion, which, losing by degrees all that influence over societies which it originally had over individuals, no longer exists but in some great souls, who consider themselves as citizens of the world, and forcing the imaginary barriers that separate people from people, make the whole human race the object of their benevolence."

PROs:

* Fascinating thoughts

* Interesting discussion on the origins of language and civilization

CONs:

* Very dry at times

* Can be hard to follow

"Which was the most necessary, society already formed to invent languages, or languages already invented to form society?"

I agree with Rousseau more in his second discourse than his first, and I think his points are better argued, but I still don't think it's anywhere near as well written. He still loves run on sentences, which make it very hard to read and comprehend. I think the highlight of the book was where he hypothesized about the origin of language and civilization. It really got me thinking about how much of a monumental achievement that was.

"The first man, who, after enclosing a piece of ground, took it into his head to say, "This is mine," and found people simple enough to believe him, was the true founder of civil society. How many crimes, how many wars, how many murders, how many misfortunes and horrors, would that man have saved the human species, who pulling up the stakes or filling up the ditches should have cried to his fellows: Be sure not to listen to this imposter; you are lost, if you forget that the fruits of the earth belong equally to us all, and the earth itself to nobody!"
