Re-reading even now
By Shawn R Hare
Short and sweet.
This little book is the text used in my Professional Portfolio class, in my courses in Video & Audio Production, at New England Tech.

The book is an excellent resource for how to think about your new career in Media, and how to get yourself noticed, and hired -- whether full-time or as a freelancer.

As the title says, I'm re-reading the book now, as I'm in the midst of expanding my working horizons.

A quick overview
By Media Professor
I was considering this as a textbook for a class on media careers, but it was a little too short. I think it would be practical for quick reference. It's inexpensive.

a little disappointed
By Fly Guy
When I bought this book, I was under the impression that I was getting the CD that comes with it naturally. Therefore, I was verry disappointed when I didn't see it at the reception of the product, and I was never told during the transaction about that important information, which was crucial to me because I use this book for school purpose. The CD contains the resources for the homeworks.
Beside that, the transaction went smoothly; the order came on time

Okay product
By CY
I bought this along with the "Let's say your Colors". This is not as good as the "colors" book. Maybe there are too many buttons? Sometimes the buttons don't come up after I press it. Some of the letter doesn't say clearly. I would only purchase the "colors" one, not the alphabet.

Excellent Book for Curious Toddler
By Brooke
My daughter loves books. All books. However, the "Let's Say.." books are the best because she sits with them by herself. She learned her numbers 1-10 and all of ther colors this way. She would sit with them for hours for several days straight until she had memorized all of them. The ABC book is the same way, and I'm sure it won't be long before she knows all of the letters too! Like the other "Let's Say..." books, I'm not particularly impressed with the actual book part of it. The pictures, words, and pages are ok -- not terribly great, but not bad either. I mostly got it just for the buttons which is the part my daughter focuses on when she plays with it alone. When we are together, I point out the things on the pages and help her match them to the buttons, which she really enjoys.

Chapter One

The Early Days of the DJ

Today’s superstar DJs are household names who command a hundred thousand dollars or more per gig, crisscross the globe to play, and exert as much influence in fashion, film, and television as they do on the dancefloor. But the DJing profession has not always been as glamorous—just seventy-five years ago the term “disc jockey” didn’t even exist.

A thorough understanding of the history of the DJ will not only provide you with a better appreciation of music in general, it will also give you perspective on the role of the DJ as it moves into the future. From the inaugural radio broadcast to the first discothèque to the birth of hip hop and house, this chapter will give you a comprehensive understanding of where DJs came from and, just as importantly, where they’re going.

In the beginning...

If we’re going to define DJing at its most fundamental level as the art of controlling music, then the most important DJ-related technological advance occurred in 1877 when Thomas Edison invented the phonograph—the first device capable of recording sound and then playing it back by making indentations in a cylindrical sheet of tinfoil. Ten years later, German-American Emile Berliner patented the Gramophone, the great-grandfather of the modern turntable, along with the discs to play on it.

We’re tempted to delve into geeky technical details here, but rather than bore you and embarrass ourselves by revealing the extent of our nerdy knowledge, let’s fast forward to 1906, when the wonderfully bearded Canadian Reginald Fessenden broadcast the first ever spoken AM radio program from Brant Rock, Massachusetts, earning him the title “The Father of Radio Broadcasting.” This was the advent of radio, and soon enough people would be able to hear music—mostly swing, jazz, and classical—from the comfort of their homes instead of attending live performances.

While Fessenden’s brief debut was only picked up by a few U.S. Navy vessels puttering around the New England coast, it marked the dawn of a new age in entertainment, one in which radio DJs would eventually become kings.

In 1921, electronics company Westinghouse established the first commercially supported radio stations in Pittsburgh, Boston, Chicago, and New York, and many other media companies soon entered the market. In just a few short years, the radio business was to become as cutthroat as piracy in the waters around the West Indies, but with fewer rules of engagement. A year after Westinghouse’s first stations went on air, the British Broadcasting Corporation, or BBC, made its first broadcast from its London studios, marking the start of commercial radio in the U.K. Five years after that, in 1927, Christopher Stone, dressed in a dinner jacket and tie, became Britains’s first disc jockey when he started his BBC radio show, playing jazz records to a fairly small audience that quickly grew to encompass much of the radio-owning British public.

But while radio technology was advancing apace, the audio equipment itself quickly was becoming outmoded. Gramophones and early turntables were unwieldy, using huge, noisy motors that delivered power inconsistently and, thanks to their thick steel needles, quickly wore out records. Most of the early discs played on the pioneering radio stations were equally hard for the radio DJ to handle—made of hard rubber, shellac, or other dense materials that were not easily manipulated and produced a lot of distortion.

These early records could hold only a few minutes of music at 78 rpm (revolutions per minute), and were worn out after a hundred or so plays, meaning that many radio shows were forced to rely on live performers. But things began to change in 1930 when RCA Victor introduced the first long-playing (LP) records.

The prototypes weren’t commercially viable at first, but record label executives quickly realized that the new discs were cheaper to produce, lighter, and more durable. And, as vinyl records rotated at 33rpm, there was less friction against the needle and therefore less hissing. Vinyl LPs were to the earlier records what CDs were to cassettes (and what MP3s are to CDs).

Record companies were quick to adopt the new format. Columbia Company took several years to build up a catalog of its most popular artists’ recordings and, in the process, further refined the vinyl that RCA Victor had introduced and the duplication process required to effectively distribute records nationwide. Columbia also partnered with stereo system manufacturer Philco to produce a turntable for playing 33 rpm records which was priced at just thirty dollars. For the first time, the turntable became a viable home entertainment option for American families.

When Columbia released the first selection of LPs—primarily recordings of classical music—in 1948, both the records and the Philco stereos sold fairly well. Not to be outdone, RCA came back with the introduction of 45 rpm records and a thirteen-dollar turntable. These also sold fairly well, but because consumers were confused by the different speeds (think Blu-ray versus HD-DVD), neither format became dominant until 1954, when record companies settled on the 45 rpm option for sending music to radio DJs and selling it to consumers.

Television was still several decades away at this point, so people in the U.S., the U.K., and elsewhere still relied on the radio for entertainment. At first, radio show hosts were referred to as announcers. Then, in 1935, American newspaper and radio commentator Walt Winchell coined the term “disc jockey” in reference to Martin Block, whose ABC radio show Make Believe Ballroom was receiving twelve thousand letters a month. The moniker seemed to suggest that the announcers passively “rode” the discs, implying that they were cursory figures. But the term stuck.

Frank Singiser was another popular radio DJ of the ’30s and ’40s, hosting Your Hit Parade on NBC’s Red Network. Singiser played the week’s most popular songs and promoted brands for commercial sponsors such as Lucky Strike, which paid big bucks to have its name associated with nationally syndicated broadcasts. To take advantage of the growing popularity of the radio DJ in the so-called Golden Age of American broadcasting, record producers began to send and even hand-deliver their latest hits to radio studios.

These early promotional copies ensured maximum exposure with minimal cost, and taking the DJs out for a few drinks certainly didn’t hurt the record promoters’ cause either (before the days when the big labels would allegedly bribe DJs to play their latest releases). With the release of an affordable transistor radio in 1948, radio audiences reached an all-time high, and DJs became more influential than ever before, evolving from mere announcers to cultural tastemakers. Without the support of the radio DJ, musicians such as Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, and Tony Bennett would arguably never have achieved commercial success.

OUT OF THE STUDIO, INTO THE CLUB

Most DJs in the ’40s were content to stay in the radio studios, but a few of the more enterprising ones opted for the less profitable, but often more emotionally rewarding, route of playing records for live audiences. This was a daunting task, as crowds in the U.S. and

U.K. were accustomed to live bands and orchestras, not some guy standing behind equipment, head bent over in concentration— which, come to think of it, is often the case today. Indeed, the crowd’s only familiarity with recorded music was what they played on their primitive home turntables, or heard on the radio or on the jukeboxes that had become popular at bars and restaurants. British DJ Jimmy Savile decided he was bored with radio and held his first dance party in 1943 using a makeshift stereo system built by a friend from spare parts. The few people who came to the function room of the Loyal Order of Ancient Shepherds (perhaps the best name for a club, ever) in Otley, England, probably didn’t know what to think. After a few more performances, however, Savile developed a loyal following, and soon worked out a deal with nationwide dance hall proprietor Mecca Ballrooms to hold similar gatherings elsewhere in England.

Four years later, Savile decided that the single turntable he was using was too restrictive, and hired a local metalworker to weld two decks together—making him, for all intents and purposes, the godfather of the modern DJ. The wonderfully eccentric Savile (who owns a mountain, was friends with Elvis Presley and John Lennon, and had over a hundred fights as a pro wrestler) went on to DJ for powerhouse Radio Luxembourg and to host Top of the Pops, the British TV institution that, until 2006, counted down the Top 40 singles chart and featured several live acts each week. Savile’s example was followed by Jamaican DJs such as Count Suckle in London, who used powerful sound systems to blast out the sounds of early ska to crowds at outdoor and indoor venues. Wild jazz parties held by DJs and attended by foppish teenagers known as “ravers” were also held throughout the city.

While Savile, Suckle, and the jazz ravers were laying the foundations for the modern club DJ in England, an equally significant development was unfolding across the English Channel in Paris. It was here that entrepreneur Paul Pracine opened Whisky a Go Go, the world’s first discothèque (the word is a portmanteau of disc and bibliothèque), in 1947. The Chez Castel and Chez Régine clubs soon opened nearby, giving Parisian music aficionados a triumvirate of quality venues from which to choose.

DJs in the U.S. quickly followed the Europeans’ lead, and started to host dance parties known as sock hops in school gymnasiums, so called because you weren’t allowed to wear dancing shoes in the gyms in case they damaged the floor. While dis...

Great Place To Start
By M. Black
This book is perfect for anyone who is just starting to DJ or anyone who is simply interested in the culture and the art-form. If you are a novice to the art-form this is the best place to start from historical context, tips from real live working DJs from all ends of the spectrum, all the way suggestions as to what makes a good DJ. Even if you are interested in learning to DJ with a controller or digital software, it is important to know where the art form came form and the basic analog principles that were the foundations of building the software.

I particularly enjoyed the appendix detailing out the "Top Tens" from DJs. Grand Wizzard Theodore (hello the inventor of the scratch & needle drop) had some great picks for his all time records. The battle records and routines list from A-Track and Craze really make you think about how much goes into that short 2 minute competition, and the samples and where to find music lists were extremely helpful. Cosmo Baker of the Rub (one of the best on-going parties in NYC) made some excellent points about building a set, combine that with the other DJs top club songs and you are on your way to party rocking.

The best part about this book is that you are reading about the art form and the DJs who have founded and innovated it, but its also told by them. It makes you feel like you are a part of the art form, a part of the DJ community. You aren't just by stander reading a timeline you are almost having a conversation with the legends. The DJs presented in this book are truly impressive, even if you haven't "heard their name" on a top chart these DJs are beasts. Google anyone of them and see for yourself.

More than scratches the surface
By K. Bell
'On the Record' takes you far beyond the basics of the DJ culture--from its pioneering birth along its evolutionary road to today's hip hop scene. It's obvious the authors did their homework, weaving together not only the history of the DJ phenomenon and its unquestionable impact on popular music but also the unexpected influence of these turn-table princes on fashion, entertainment and so many facets of popular culture.

If you're looking to hone your own DJ skills and expand your knowledge of musical style, start here. But even if you're simply a lover of popular music with a respect for the groundbreaking mixers that made house parties cool and club scenes a world of their own, 'On the Record' is an intriguing read.

Book is great, pen is awful!
By John McNeal
Don't use the pen! Within the first 5 minutes of using this book my daughter smeared the pen all over her and it wouldn't wash off. It also didn't wipe off the book very well either. I gave her a different dry erase marker and it worked great. I really like all the different activities in the the book and my kids (ages 3 & 5) were excited to do them. I give the book 5 stars and the pen 1 star.

But it's Stern's infant granddaughter, Opal, who really wins Dixie's heart. Problem is that Opal's mother, Ruby, has some dangerous connections to certain local big-money honchos. Now it's up to Dixie to protect Opal from harm―at all costs. And she must do it without letting law-enforcement people know―not even Detective Guidry, with whom she happens to be romantically involved. Another good yarn!
By Bill Baity
OK, I'm a Siesta Key resident, so I am probably biased. I do enjoy this series of cozy mysteries. These are well-written, as opposed to, say, the Mango Bob series set in nearby Englewood. All the more surprising as this was a secondary career for Blaize, who was by all accounts a remarkable woman. Will Dixie win out over the evil real estate Ponzi schemesters? Read on!

Blaize Clement keeps reader spellbound once again.
By Paula McPoland
If you are an animal person and enjoy a great mystery read set in the Florida Keys, you will not want to miss reading this book! Blaize Clement never lets you get bored. You will not want to put it down once you pick this up!

Great growth
By Jane Myers Perrine
This is one of Ms. Clement's best. Dixie grows as a person, is able to accept loss. She has to attempt to save a child because she wasn't able to save her own and now can move on. The writing is very strong. There is one place that wasn't well handled: they are looking for the bad guy and just happen to end up in a dive where the bad guy is drinking and is so drunk he tells them everything they want to know within 5 minutes of their arrival. WEAK! But the rest of the tory makes up for that. And I'm still in love with her brother and Paco.

The Year's Best Science Fiction: Twenty-Eighth Annual CollectionFrom St. Martin's Griffin

In the heart of the new millennium, worlds beyond our imagination have opened up, blurring the line between life and art. Embracing the challenges and possibilities of cyberspace, genetics, the universe, and beyond, the world of science fiction has become a porthole into the realities of tomorrow. In The Year’s Best Science Fiction Twenty-eighth Annual Collection our very best SF authors explore ideas of a new world with such compelling stories as:

“Chicken Little”: The Locus Award-winning author Cory Doctorow shows us a future where the rich keep getting richer, and intend to stay that way--no matter what.

“The Starship Mechanic”: Jay Lake and Ken Scholes join forces for a wry story that shows us that a workman is only as good as his tools—and that some of those tools are specialized for some very weird tasks indeed.

“The Night Train”: The prolific writer Lavie Tidhar brings us on a vivid, violent, and bizarre journey on The Night Train, where few of the passengers are what they appear to be, and death can strike from nowhere at any second along the way…

The thirty-three short stories in this collection imaginatively take us far across the universe, into the very core of our beings, to the realm of the gods, and the moment just after now.  Included here are the works of masters of the form and of bright new talents, including:

uncharacteristically weak collection
By wheeeeee
I don't know if it's the editor's selections for this volume that were poor or if it was just a bad year out there. I trust Gardner and hope he's not lost his edge, so maybe it's just a weak year.

I've been reading these best-ofs since I remember being able to read. And this is the first time in 30 years that I've read some of the selected works and went, "Really? This made it in?" They're not just weak, some of the work is just downright terrible. One of the stories is a long incoherent ramble that goes nowhere. A few shine but it's about one in four.

I normally buy these volumes as a means to get exposed to new writers, and then seek out their books to purchase. I love short stories and do buy 3-4 of these types of volumes every year.

I can safely say this is the worst volume in the series and can safely be ignored.

Buy one of the award nomination volumes this year and hope that next year's crop is better than this.

One major beef with Gardner is that he is fond of giving away too much of the story in the opening comments. I'd really like to read the story as the author lays it out, and Gardner writing, "The following story about a businessman who time travels back to the Jurassic to find his long lost love but ends up instead quantum teleporting to Mars" gives out way too much detail and no doubt must be annoying to the writer who would like to introduce his story without giving out the essentials of the plot.

I prefer the method I've read in Gene Wolfe's collections, where the story opens without any of the prattle, then the author's comments are at the end. Where they should be, when you have absorbed the story and what he has to say is relevant.

Blowing the plot in advance, giving us all kinds of details about the author's life, means much less before we've read his story.

HAVE DESSERT AFTER THE MEAL NOT BEFORE

Please give it some thought.

Science Fiction from the Year of E-Books
By John M. Ford
Gardner Dozois presents his picks of the best science fiction from 2010. His review of the field notes the flood of e-books, reported by some publishers to exceed sales of paper books. Dozois remains a believer in the future of print science fiction. His review of book and printed magazine sales in 2010 offers supporting evidence. The main attraction, of course, is a set of thirty-three carefully-selected stories, each preceded by a concise, well-written introduction to the author and related work.

My five favorites are:

Robert Reed's "A History of Terraforming" follows a planetary engineer from his formative experiences in childhood through a career of increasing challenges. The journey is richer than its ending.

Ian Macleod's "Re-Crossing the Styx" introduces a future in which the wealthy can afford to prolong their lives indefinitely. With the daily help of someone they are sure they can trust.

Joe Haldeman's "Sleeping Dogs" follows a war veteran returning to a far-away battlefield to uncover a truth no longer available in his memory. Can this piece of the past be allowed into his present?

Yoon Ha Lee's "Flower, Mercy, Needle, Chain" gets my vote for the best story in the collection. A woman guards an ancient weapon that can remove pieces of the past. Large pieces. The dialogue between the two main characters is reminiscent of the book-long bar discussion in The January Dancer.

Pat Cadigan's "The Taste of Night" reminds us that the remaining senses sharpen to compensate when one sense is lost. How might this work when a new sense is emerging?

This collection is recommended. All of the stories are clearly science fiction, although they cover a lot of ground from traditional space opera to the future of an alternate history. Only a couple of them are overly preachy about current social issues. Fewer than usual--just three--also appear in David Hartwell and Kathryn Cramer's Year's Best SF 16. The investment of your money and time is well-returned. Enjoy!

Book size
By Linda E Gillett
Have all the "Years Best Sci-Fi" Annual Collections, and concur with the other reviews of his commentary at the beginning - always informative, pointing the way to good authors and stories. Most of the stories are very good. He is likely right that e-books will out-sell actual printed material before too long, and this book is a sample of one of the reasons why...the print is too small. I compared this book to the 19th Annual Collection, and though more words (300,00 versus 250,000), it is significantly smaller, ie. smaller print. I understand that less paper = lower costs, but that bargain is forcing 'older' readers such as myself to switch to electronic gadgets so the type size can be set to legible size. Tis a shame...

This book was a waste. I had to purchase it for a college class. It was bane and boring with biased information. Like most textbooks it quickly lost all of its value and is better used as fire wood than for actual reading.

Roller derby is back, in all of its rowdy and raucous glory

Meet Bliss Cavendar, an indie-rock-loving misfit stuck in the tiny town of Bodeen, Texas. Her pageant-addicted mother expects her to compete for the coveted Miss Bluebonnet crown, but Bliss would rather feast on roaches than be subjected to such rhinestone tyranny.

Bliss's escape? Roller Derby.

When she discovers a league in nearby Austin, Bliss embarks on an epic journey full of hilarious tattooed girls, delicious boys in bands, and a few not-so-awesome realities even the most hard-core derby chick has to learn.

Shauna Cross' Whip It is then basis of the 2009 Drew Barrymore film Whip It, starring Ellen Page, Alia Shawkat, Marcia Gay Harden and Daniel Stern.

Review

“The novel shines in describing the dashing world of roller derby, where the players are hot and have nasty names like Dinah Might, Eva Destruction and Princess Slaya. [Shauna Cross shows] naked enthusiasm for the edgy, underground sport.” ―Publishers Weekly

“This first-time author combines roller-skating and coming-of-age with a sardonic heroine to create an enjoyable, quick read. Whether Bliss is battling menacing derby mavens or discovering the perils of lying to parents, she is quirky and likeable despite her prickly exterior. . . . Fans of Louise Rennison's Georgia Nicolson books will be pleased with this American counterpart.” ―Voice of Youth Advocates

“Sharp humor dominates this entertaining debut from Cross, who weaves her own experience with roller derby into the fun and traumas of a small-town girl experiencing major rebellion. . . . plenty of laughs and adolescent insights . . . exuberant and insightful.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“Roller derby . . . is conveyed with sexy, enthusiastic energy that injects the whole novel with a warm and authentic vibe.” ―The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

All I have to do is get around the track five times. I can do this.
I line up, the whistle blows, and I immediately stumble as I take off. I keep skating, fighting my wobbles, and get around the track one time with relative ease (yes!). But then something clicks on the second lap. I lean low into the track, push as hard as I can and—bingo!—I go flying out of the turn at speeds the other girls haven’t even touched. For a second, it feels like I might not be able to control the speed, but I bend my knees lower, and manage to go even faster. From there on, the track is mine, I attack it with all I have...
At practice, the humiliation factor decreases as my skating improves. Even though I’m covered in bruises aka “derby kisses” I feel surprisingly proud of what I’m learning to do (it’s so weird; I’m kind of like a jock). I even sneak out late at night to covertly practice my T-stops and power slides in the driveway, determined to catch up to the other girls.
I love the way the wind whips through my hair as I fly through the turns, sitting low, leaning into the track for maximum speed. My life feels like it has been so slow for so long, it’s fun to finally be going fast.

While wandering through the young adult section of my local library, I came across DERBY GIRL. I had seen the book in the bookstore on other occasions but never bought it. I picked it up at the library and took it home with me. Not knowing what to expect, I started reading, and was instantly enthralled by the life of Bliss Cavender.

Fans of A&E's Rollergirls will especially enjoy this book.

Bliss is too big for Bodeen, Texas. Bliss is a sixteen-year-old high school student that can't wait to get out of her small town. Her mom is obsessed with beauty pageants, and expects Bliss to follow in her footsteps. However, Bliss is better known for receiving the "certificate of participation" rather than the tiara. She is more comfortable in her 80's thrift store T-shirts rather than teased hair and evening gowns.

On a shopping trip to the big city of Austin, Bliss snags a flyer advertising Roller Derby. In her younger days, Bliss was pretty good on four wheels, and she hatches a plot with her friend, Pash, to sneak back to Austin (an hour from Bodeen) for try-outs. After a shaky start on skates, Bliss soon remembers the feel of the wheels under her feet and is totally addicted.

Sneaking out twice a week under the guise of an SAT-prep course, Bliss soon becomes Babe Ruthless and a fan favorite for the Austin Roller Derby scene.

Covering the topics of fitting in, parental disagreements, first love, and finding out who you are meant to be, DERBY GIRL does not disappoint. The story moves quickly without any needless sidelines to interrupt the plot. Ms. Cross's style is hip and spunky. She uses many slang phrases as well as abbreviations to keep in touch with the teen audience.

Bliss is a lot of fun and independent. It's refreshing to read a story where the lead character is comfortable with who she is meant to be and stays true to herself the entire way through the story.

light on substance, heavy on fatphobia
By Amazon Customer
bliss cavendar wants all of this stuff to happen, and.. luckily, it all just kind of happens. without trying, without much strife, without much conflict, without much conversation, she magically finds herself the best roller derby girl in austin with the hottest boyfriend and the best grades. then her parents come around and let her do what she wants despite having the opposite feelings slightly earlier, and when her boyfriend betrays her, she.. kinda gets over it in a way that a sixteen year old girl never, ever has.

the book was fluffy and enjoyable, but for a book written to empower girls to follow their dreams and carve out places to fit in, and a book glorifying the inclusive pro-girl sport of roller derby, the book was rife with fatphobia- on almost every other page, bliss complains about fat tourists, fat customers at her restaurant, roller derby women who are fat, any woman who is fatter than she is, and how fat her mother is. what a bummer.

Skip this and watch the movie
By Joel Kramer
I picked up Shauna Cross' "Whip It" because I enjoyed the movie. If you like roller derby, you'll kind of like this book, which shows some of the fun of participating but glosses over training, injuries, and getting to know any of the characters besides the narrator. There's no discussion of the background of derby or why any of these women participate in it, leaving the book to focus solely on a narrator whose story, once the glossy trappings of derby are stripped from it, isn't all that original or engaging. It's a typical teenage coming of age novel, and once you strip it of the trend factor that roller derby brings there isn't really anything original left. We've seen this all before, but it's on skates now.
