About the Author
Roger Priddy left school at 16 with just one qualification―in art. He went to Berkshire College of Art and Design and trained as an illustrator. His first job in children's books was working with the publisher Peter Usborne, at Usborne Publishing, and then he worked with Peter Kindersley at Dorling Kindersley, where he spent 16 years. Priddy became Creative Director of DK's Children's Division and was Managing Director of the children's mass market publisher Funfax when it was acquired by DK.
In 2000, he created Priddy Books with John Sargent at St Martin's Press to create innovative and imaginative titles for children, from first books for babies through early reference titles for older children. Since then, over 30 million copies of Roger's 200 plus books have sold worldwide, with five of his books―My Big Animal, My Big Truck, Happy Baby Words, Happy Baby Colors and Puppy and Friends―each selling over one million copies. He is also the author of Big Board First 100 Words; Big Board Books Colors, ABC, Numbers; and Bright Baby Noisy Monsters. His creativity has been recognized with numerous industry awards. Priddy lives in London with his wife Zena and their four children.

Delightful board book that appeals to a youngster's fascination with movement, sense of touch and more

The fact that duct tape holds together the binding of our copy of this book is a testament to the mileage it's had with our three grandsons! We'd purchased this in 2008, the year our oldest grandson was born, as one of the first entries into a huge children's library built over the seven years I spent babysitting he and his two younger brothers, one of several by Roger Priddy. Not only is this a fun way for a youngster to learn about farm animals (cow, pig, duck, goat, rooster, goose, horse, sheep and sheepdog, donkey and chicken) and farm equipment (tractor, digger), but there are also various farm produce items (orange, peas, peach, tomato, cheese) with fun activities interspersed that appeal to a child's sense of touch and delight in movement!
Several of the pages have tabs your youngster can pull in and out to make certain objects move, while others have textured features... the cover has a tab that moves one duckling's head from right to left, while the other duckling has some soft "down". There's a tab on the duck page that moves the bottom of its bill up and down as if saying "quack", another on the goose page that moves its head back and forth, as well as on the digger page that moves the front portion of the machinery up and down. Textures include some glitter on an orange slice, the peas are raised to create a bumpy feel as your little one's hand runs over them, the words "A tasty peach" printed over the pictures are fuzzy feeling as the skin would be, and there's a chick with more soft "down" to rub. There are also barn doors to open, a tractor wheel with a partially cut-out hole where your youngster can insert a finger and move the wheel around, but ALL of our grandkids' favorite page has been the last one, which shows a chunk of Swiss cheese with ten holes of various sizes that go completely through the back cover, and they would get such a kick out of sticking their own fingers through the holes, as well as trying to catch my finger tips as I wiggled them around from hole to hole!
This delightful book is nice-sized (8-5/16"H, 9-1/8"W) and quite thick (a full 1-1/4"), and also helps in teaching terms for grown animals versus baby animals as well (i.e. pig/piglets, duck/ducklings, goose/goslings, horse/foal, sheep/lambs, chickens/chick). Kids are different in their level of "enthusiasm" in exploring, though, so with the 1-3 age recommendation, be aware ahead of time that you may need to occasionally provide some Scotch tape "C.P.R." on the moveable parts, which can be bent and eventually torn off by more aggressive youngster (like our middle grandson, affectionately referred to as our "Master of Disaster"!) Certainly worth the 2008 copyright date's imprinted US $12.95 price on the back cover!

My 1 1/2 year old grandson's favorite book!

This is the book my 1 1/2 year old grandson most often requests, exclaiming "'tory!" and climbing onto my lap to cuddle and "Ooooo" over the colorful pages which often include something for him to do as well as see. He is happily surprised each time he opens the barn doors and rediscovers the bright blue tractor parked inside, loves to pull the tab that makes the duck's bill open and close and giggles over the pigs' sticky noses. The tantalizing full-page, larger than life illustration of a sliced orange with sparkly droplets of "juice" nearly always prompts him to ask for a drink of "wa-wa!"
F is for Farm is a colorful conglomeration of all things farm-related - from heavy machinery, to sweet baby ducklings with "real" tufts of soft feathers to feel. With it's heavy, durable construction, this book should last through several more grandchildren, to the delight of each.

A favorite in my house!

So many baby books are filled with line drawings that don't look like the real thing, which can make it difficult for very young children to build vocabulary. Like all of Roger Priddy's books, F is for Farm contains full-color, clear photographs of real objects. My 15-month-old finds this book endlessly interesting. She is a little young to manipulate the moving parts herself, but she enjoys watching us move them. The animal pages are a particular favorite, and she seems to enjoy the simple rhymes ("Donkey will kick so move away quick!) although she doesn't yet understand all the words.
