Everything's an Argument (with Readings & IX visual exercises 4th Ed.), by Andrea A. Lunsford, John J. Ruszkiewicz, Keith Walters, Cheryl

Everything's an Argument's unique, student-centered approach to teaching argument has made it the best-selling brief argument text on the market. The book's engaging, informal style shows students first how to read and analyze a wide range of argumentative texts -- verbal and visual, scholarly and "real world" -- and then how to use what they learn to write their own arguments. Andrea Lunsford and John Ruszkiewicz's instruction is fresh, elegant, and jargon-free, emphasizing inclusivity (moving beyond simple pro/con positions), humor, and visual argument to make Everything's an Argument immediately accessible. Students like this book because it helps them see and understand that a world of argument already surrounds them; instructors like it because it helps students construct their own arguments about that world.

Arguing with Everything
By Kevin L. Nenstiel
This book starts with the standards of rhetoric laid down by Aristotle over two milennia ago. It explains the kinds, purposes, and conventions of classical argument in a vernacular English that contemporary teachers will be able to expound upon, and students will be able to comprehend. In essence, it brings Aristotle up to date without losing the unity that makes him worth studying to this day.

Unfortunately, only a small number of the chapters contain any examples of how this works in actual usage. To be really useful, this book needs readings. There is a larger edition with actual examples of rhetoric in use, but I naively thought my students would be happier with a slimmer, less expensive volume. Shame on me. I found myself running around all hell to breakfast, trying to find articles and essays that would exemplify the rules and notions of rhetoric for my students, hoping what I found (often on the fly) would actually be useful.

I like the layout and arrangement of this book. As far as it's useful, it's also informative and enlightening. But the more expanded version ought to be more useful to freshman composition students. Next semester, I will have my students buy the more expensive "with readings" edition, which will make my life easier, and theirs too, since they won't have to keep track of all my hasty photocopies.

A Solid Resource for Persuasive Writing
By Tobin Sparfeld
This book is designed to be an undergraduate-level textbook in persuasive writing. I read the book to see if I wanted to use it as a textbook for one of my classes. I think it's a very good textbook.

Part One introduces the types of arguments and various forums, as well as introducing the importance of context in persuasive writing -- it really matters who you are speaking to.

Part two covers the specific kinds of arguments in depth - arguments from the heart (humor and emotion), and those based on character, values, and facts.

Part Three is the meatiest portion of the book, addressing the structure of arguments, such as Toulmin analysis, arguments of definition, evaluation, cause, proposals, and humor.

Part Four deals with the style used in perfecting one's argument in written language, visual presentation, and spoken performances.

Part Five is shorter and discusses issues related to evidence, fallacious arguments (such as ad hominem attacks or slippery slope arguments), and intellectual property issues.

I like the clear writing style of the book and the informative explanation. The best part of the book, however, is the excerpts and examples. They are modern, relevant, engaging, and the students will enjoy reading and analyzing them. The chapter on Fallacies of Argument was also very strong, as well as the issues related to evidence.

Some things I did not like were the review questions at the end, some of which seemed ambiguous and overly time-consuming. Also, though the title is catchy, I do not accept that EVERYTHING is an argument -- the "Buckle-up" sign on the highway is just a sign.

That being said, I think EAA can be used as an effective textbook if certain sections are used instead of the entire book. Also, more in-depth analysis of Toulmin arguments might be examined in other sources, as it is treated somewhat lightly here. Overall, however, it can be a strong resource to help teach persuasive writing.

An encyclopedia hiding inside a textbook
By Winifred Flint
(this is a review for the fourth edition 2007)
This college textbook is in its fourth edition - doubling in size from 300 to 600 pages. The extensive index makes it useful as an auxiliary resource or even a stand alone.
The work is an encyclopedia on the subject of rhetoric. It is the first work on the subject that I have seen that includes `signifying' - a humorous style of African-American argument. In addition it includes the bones of a research handbook and the basics of Strunk & White. Unfortunately, it fails the Strunk & White goal of brevity. Making up for this in a great way is the section on citing almost every kind of resource in the MLA style. Even today there are MLA handbooks that omit instructions on how to cite articles that skip pages, how to quote from indirect pages or many other media other than print. The format is intensely visual which speaks well to the image rich environment in which we live. Visuals are key to instructing but shorten the life span of the work. In ten years, will a photo of Lil' Kim create the same learning opportunity as it does today? The book has a companion website which provides check lists for writing and research that are also covered in the book. The website checklists are much easier to use. Typically colleges do not include textbooks in their collections, but I would argue that this is one to break the rules for because of its high usefulness as a stand alone resource.

Bright Baby Books are Excellent!
By Lexi
My 6 month old LOVES and has loved the Bright Baby book series since she was only a couple months old. When she was that young, the brief, colorful book was just enough to hold her attention as she would stare at each picture. Now, she tries to hold the book herself and pats the parts that have different textures. What I like about the series is that the books are very simple, a picture with a word under it, so I can see this as a great tool for early vocabulary building, and later reading.

Delivers exactly what it promises.
By Eric the K
Those familiar with the New York Times know that its daily crossword puzzles increase in difficulty as the week progresses. Monday's puzzles are relatively easy while Saturday's are the most challenging. (The popular Sunday New York Times Magazine section puzzle, though much larger than the daily puzzles, is scaled to Thursday's level of difficulty.) Wednesday puzzles are smack in the middle --- at the intermediate level of difficulty --- and this collection is a perfect example of the genre. As with all the Will Shortz-edited crossword puzzles, discovering the connection between the theme and the major answers is part of the fun of solving each puzzle. This collection is recent enough (as of this review) that any popular cultural references are still relatively fresh and not yet outdated or obscure --- a problem with many older crossword puzzle collections. Your enjoyment may vary based on your desire for (or aversion to) challenge but, for a moderate exercise of your verbal skills, these puzzles can't be beat.

Perfect for vacations
By Absinthe
Will Shortz must be an alias for the collective group of master puzzlers at the NYT. Tuesday crosswords are perfect for people who want to solve puzzles with a cup of tea, before we get down to the serious problem of Wednesday puzzles, which call for coffee. Thursday calls for brandy, and then, after the third snifter, we go back to Monday and thence to bed. Tuesday puzzles are simply to entertain while the TV is broadcasting football games and grandkids are trying to catch lizards. Tuesday has its place in the puzzle world.

I must not say what I think of the people who solve NYT's Friday and Saturday puzzles, because envy is one of the seven deadly sins.

A Room for Learning: The Making of a School in Vermont, by Tal Birdsey

“Sometimes I have thought that this school is like the only place where the lilies are considered at all…” In this stirring account of a teacher and his fourteen students tucked away in the Green Mountains of Vermont, educator Tal Birdsey fervently documents the founding year of his small junior high school with wit and humility. Part memoir, part meditation on the power of art and poetry, and part criticism of standardized education, A Room for Learning evokes a spirit of change, in which students were allowed a hand in their own education. With no set curriculum, no prior history, and limited resources, the students delve deep into the poetry of Yeats and Bukowski, the music of Coltrane, the art of Caravaggio, and the emotional landscape of Elie Wiesel’s “Night”, with each student learning to offer his or her own personal insights. But they also take time out, to be outside amidst the pinecones and fresh air, to be the kids that they still sometimes are and to learn from one another. Isolated from mainstream culture and constantly on the brink of apathy, this diverse group of kids and a teacher created a literary community and celebrated learning and themselves. A Room for Learning is the poignant true story of how one small school demonstrated that a classroom can be a place of transformative power.

Review
"I found this a deeply disturbing and moving account of powerful schooling, and of a teacher finding himself as fourteen youngsters do so too, alongside him."--Deborah Meier

"A few years ago, an idealistic teacher named Tal Birdsey started such a school for young adolescents in Ripton, Vermont, called North Branch School. He tells its story, with delightful wit and penetrating insight, in his inspiring new book A Room for Learning. We see how an authentic teacher builds a caring, loving community of learners. Every page, every incident and observation Birdsey relates, is a gentle but firm repudiation of technocratic schooling. “The first parents gravitated to the school,” he tells us, "because something entirely different could be made. . .  [C]urrent political debates about accountability or state funding fell far short of meaningful discourse about the education of children. These parents, no matter their income, education, or political views, were seeking education that involved something closer to the heart. In particular, they seemed to want something more creative and free. . . in contradistinction to schools tethered to right, standards-based approaches or school officials bombarded with federal mandates to test (pp. 31-2)."

A Room for Learning shows exactly what “something closer to the heart” looks like in education. Birdsey sees each of his students as whole persons, with their own challenges, inclinations, learning styles, quirks and insecurities. Most of them have been “wounded by school” (as Kirsten Olson systematically documents in her recent book by that title); they are afraid of ridicule and rejection, suspicious of adults who judge them and peers who band together in cliques to exercise power. They are reluctant to open themselves to others, to test their own limits or pursue their deepest dreams. Birdsey tells how he created a safe, nurturing space in which these young teens could find and test their best, authentic selves. “I asked them to embrace the personal pronoun Iso that we might come closer to what was sacred inside of them. Those truths—their truths—would bring us closer to what mattered” (p. 59). Ultimately, what really matters to Birdsey and his students is a community where everyone feels cared for, a community rooted in love. This, not triumph in the corporate race, is what people are for.

Educational policies based on standardization, authoritarian control, and competition for abstract goals only support the continuation of empire. People don’t much matter—systems do. Education dictated by corporate and political elites is oblivious to the lived reality of children and youths struggling to define themselves and find their place in the world. “Race to the Top,” like “No Child Left Behind,” and every other federal educational mandate, imposes a brutal efficiency on schooling that has no place for visionary educators, like Birdsey, who honor the essential personhood of their students. One vital goal of Vermont independence is an educational culture that respects and encourages learning on a human scale, that supports caring and loving communities of learning. National educational policy is one more reason why we need to challenge the burgeoning power of the American empire. Because Vermonters value genuine democracy, treasure individuality, and hold as precious the local land and community, we ought to decline the federal government’s inducements to participate in any “race to the top.”" --Ron Miller (author of What Are Schools For?), Vermont Commons

"A telling and  inspiring account of a dedicated and knowing teacher and a community that assembled on behalf of the future of its young citizens, all determined to further the cultural, intellectual, moral, psychological growth that takes place in a classroom….A witness to education as it hands one generation along to form, ably and knowingly, its place in a nation's destiny."-- Robert Coles, Pulitzer Prize award-winning author of Children in Crisis

"If education interests you--if kids interest you--this is a magical story. It's about what happens if you take them seriously, and if you have the grace and agility to hang with them in the tough spots and the glorious ones. Nothing you've read for a long time will make you much more optimistic about the possibilities for the future. And if you're an educator, or thinking of becoming one, nothing will remind you more powerfully of the nobility of your calling."—Bill McKibben, New York Times bestselling author of Deep Economy

“A glorious memoir of teaching and learning, of building a school from the bottom up, of keeping it small, intimate, personal and informal, Tal Birdsey's A SERIOUS HOUSE is an implicit rebuke of of the rancid illness that plagues American education: beaurocracy, formality, standardized testing, uniformity, conformity, and an unholy reliance on numbers and statistics.  In Birdsey's little piece of heaven, there is simply the student, the teacher, the materials, and the place. Nothing extraneous, only art, intelligence, creativity and a close stable healthy environment. A hymn to pedagogy, the sacredness of nature and the child, the music of language, the rigors of inquiry, and the natural high of creativity. As he opens his students eyes, he opened mine.”—Pat Conroy, New York Times bestselling author of The Prince of Tides, My Losing Season, The Water is Wide, and many others

Moving Children Ahead
By Edward Kloman
In a world where standardized curriculums, No Child Left Behind, MCAS, and other forms of bureaucratic machinations are the responses to the failures of education, Tal Birdsey's, A Room for Learning is a breath of common sense and a way forward in working with all kinds of students in the classroom. What I appreciate most about Birdsey's work is the validation of taking time to think, the ability to reflect, and breadth of imagination in the face of an American culture that commands immediate and often cursory responses. To read, write, and speak well are all predicated on the quality and patience of the human connection between student and teacher. Birdsey's book through a balance of storytelling and philosophy gives all of us--readers, students, and teachers--a pedagogy and process to learn and live well in the modern world.

must read for parents and teachers
By Willem Jewett
A Room for Learning is a must read for anyone with an interest in children and their education; and that should be all of us.

Tal Birdsey's book about the creation of a private middle school located in the smallest of small towns in Vermont is much more than a chronicle or journal. It will revitalize that creative part of your mind that thinks, not often enough, about the miracle of educating kids. Perhaps it will stir you to act on those thoughts. I hope it does.

Education is alive and well
By Thrower Starr
Having been lucky enough to know what a fine writer Tal Birdsey is, I knew that this book would have moment upon moment of gorgeous and powerful language, but what I did not expect was the narrative thrust of his story. The book begins with an idea: Birdsey wants to start a school; the only problem for this teacher who has not taught for several years, is that he has no school and no students. He collects a small group of young adolescents and finds a place to have school, and from there the story is set in motion. Birdsey unleashes his unconventional teaching on a motley group of awkward and brilliant and courageous teenagers, by turns challenging and loving them into creating that most mysterious and powerful thing-- a community. You come to know the kids as Birdsey deftly brings them to life, each with his or her own struggle, with his or her own triumph. The community, the school, they create is original, idiosyncratic, enlivening, and inspirational. It's a work of art, as is the book. I couldn't put it down...not something you usually hear about a book on education. I recommend it to anyone interested in education or the growth and development of young people.

A Murder on the Appian Way: A Novel of Ancient Rome (Novels of Ancient Rome), by Steven Saylor

Torchlight flickers on the elegant marble walls. The sound of a mob echoes in the street. The year is 52 B.C. and the naked body of Publius Clodius is about to be carried through the teaming streets of Rome. Clodius, a rich man turned rabble-rouser, was slain on the most splendid road in the world, the Appian Way. Now Clodius's rival, Milo, is being targeted for revenge and the city teeters on the verge of chaos.

An explosive trial will feature the best oration of Cicero and Marc Antony, while Gordianus the Finder has been charged by Pompey the Great himself to look further into the murder. With the Senate House already in ashes, and his own life very much in danger, Gordianus must return to a desrted stretch of the Appian Way - to find the truth that can save a city drunk on power, rent by fear, and filled with the madness and glory of Rome.

Amazon.com Review
This is the fifth in Steven Saylor's "Roma Sub Rosa" series: murder mysteries set in classical Rome just before the fall of the Empire. Once again, Saylor's sleuth is Gordoianus the Finder, a sort of Sam Spade in a toga, who is hired by the rich and infamous of Roman society to solve their personal and political troubles. This time the powerful politician Publius Clodius is murdered on an open road and as riots break out, the fate of the Republic is in doubt. The plotting is deft and the action -- both physical and intellectual -- is nonstop. Most of the characters here are heterosexual but Saylor (who also writes great erotica under the name Aaron Travis) brings a critical gay sensibility to his tales that forms the cultural and emotional crux of his work.

From Publishers Weekly
Turmoil strikes Rome in A.D. 52 in this stand-out novel by the author of The Venus Throw. Once again, Gordianus the Finder is put in the delicate position of having to solve a crime and keep his own counsel amid the scheming and duplicitous rulers of Rome. Publius Clodius, a powerful populist politician with an unsavory personal life, is murdered while traveling on the Appian Way. The prime suspect is Clodius's arch rival, patrician Titus Milo, and the repercussions are many-for the state, the judicial system and the military. Gordianus is brought into the case by his neighbor, Cicero, who is defending Milo and needs a bit of discreet detective work. Gordianus doesn't have much use for "lawyers," especially not for the silver-tongued Cicero, whose motives he distrusts, but the case is too intriguing to turn down. An unusual and morally sturdy character, Gordianus is honest without being sanctimonious, a savvy observer of the political scene who never loses his integrity. He's also a clear and faithful narrator. Soon, he finds himself dealing with the likes of Pompey, Caesar and Mark Antony as he unravels the complicated threads of the crime. Meanwhile, Rome is burning as Clodius's followers riot to avenge their murdered leader. The suspense never lags as Saylor spins a sophisticated political thriller that also brings his readers up to speed on their Roman history.

From Booklist
Saylor meticulously resurrects ancient Rome, providing another irresistible installment in the continuing chronicles of Gordianus the Finder. Patrician is pitted against plebeian as two rival statesmen vie for power and prestige. The apparent murder of populist hero Publius Clodius by Titus Magnus, his sworn enemy and political foil, inflames the masses. When Rome is overrun by a frenzied mob and the Senate House is torched, Gordianus accepts a commission from Pompey to uncover the murky and confusing particulars of the fatal encounter that incited such unrest. As the incredible truth begins to unfold, it becomes increasingly evident that the bloody incident on the Appian Way presages the inevitable downfall of the Roman Republic. Gripping suspense and intrigue superbly supported by a wealth of accurate historical detail. Margaret Flanagan

A fun, enjoyable book
By Dan Nuttle
I generally read history, not fiction. In fact, until the past year, about 95% of my reading was history. I started reading Colleen McCullough's series of books on Rome, tired of it, and then tried Saylor. I think I've found my author. This book is splendid. Interesting, engaging, never insulting to my intelligence, but never overly dry or expository. The style is elegant and refined, as opposed to the clunky, cliche-ridden style of McCullough. The characters breathe. (For instance, characters can be erotic and alluring, but they're never lurid.) The storytelling is engrossing. I won't comment on the book's value as a murder mystery per se, because I'm not really a fan of the genre. Does it have a sufficient twist? I don't know; I don't care. I enjoyed the book, regardless of its genre.

All in all, a novel written for serious, mature readers, but readers who seek a fun, relaxing book. And after you finish the first, you can look forward to the others, because the central character, Gordianus, is warm, witty, vulnerable, imperfect, and thoroughly human. Someone I can identify with.

By the time I'd finished this book, I had ordered all of the other books in the series.

Mysteries aside for a moment
By TammyJo Eckhart
"A Murder on the Appian Way" is less of a mystery novel than Saylor's previous books in this series. There is still a mystery but the resolution is based on accidental encounters more than investigation. However, we get to see Rome as a confused, dangerous, and determined to remain civilized city as the clock counts down on the Republic. We briefly meet some of the big names you've heard of in Roman history courses but only briefly as would make sense for a mere "finder". No, this book is best read as an exploration of Roman society and of Gordianus' family as it grows up and increases in number, complications, and love. Gordianus would be considered a poor Roman father and husband in his day but for us, he is understandable and expressive. This novel made me more interested in him than any of the previous novels.

The book reminded me of an epic historical fiction.
By A Customer
A Murder on the Appian Way reminded me of an epic historical fiction novel. Gordianus takes on a role such as Pug in War and Remembrance. He is able to meet almost all of the famous figures in Ancient Rome while still remaining a commoner. Steven Saylor is able to add personalities to the people usually only read about in history texts. The book presents a good mystery which posts many questions for the reader. The plot is believable and in the end all the confusing parts are resolved. Deeper themes are also touched upon. The beginning of the book addresses the power of a mob. The distress of a rioting Rome is portrayed, and destruction, anarchy, and rhetoric reign. Towards the middle, the book brings truth into view. Who knows the truth, who wants to know the truth, who has to benefit from the truth, and why? By the end, Gordianus is met with a difficult decision regarding his personal and family life. He has to weigh compassion with discipline and make one of the hardest choices of his life. The book was captivating and intriguing. I would definitely recommend it to anyone, and especially those interested in Ancient Rome.

Valuable Text In New Edition
By Chimonsho
This is a very serviceable survey for the early eras of world history. Unlike multi-authored texts---e.g. with 4 authors, 6 editions and scant literary merit---Robert Strayer presents a unified perspective in engaging, readable style. The illustrations, maps and supporting material are excellent. While the philosophy is rather liberal, Strayer is well-balanced in presenting a range of views. He is more interested in discerning key developments and patterns of change rather than piling on details (thus "brief history"), but there's enough data to illustrate the major issues. Unlike many textbooks, women's history, especially the women's movement, receive proper attention. It's also among the most affordable world history surveys. One drawback is the lack of extensive primary source excerpts, but teachers can easily remedy this deficiency with other assignments. A good supplement is E Gilbert & J Reynolds, "Trading Tastes," also reasonably priced compared to most source collections. Strayer's works have quickly become my favorites for world history courses.

[Adapted from my review of the 2008 edition. The second edition also has versions subtitled "A Brief Global History with Sources," addressing one concern mentioned here.]

Write this way...
By FrKurt Messick
This book, `Patterns for College Writing: A Rhetorical Reader and Guide' edited by Laurie G. Kirszner and Stephen R. Mandell, is a book widely used in colleges and universities, as well as advanced high school classes across the nation. It is a very useful text, and I use it when tutoring students in preparation for community college level writing and reading work. It is used at our college in the basic skills reading courses, too.
The book looks at how writers develop their work. The first few chapters look at some of the basic mechanics of writing - planning, writing, editing and revising. It also looks briefly at certain skills needed for writing, such as brainstorming and idea generation, as well as journal writing. There are many exercises included here to give students first-hand experience.
The second section looks at the various types of writing students will be called upon to produce - narrative papers, process papers, cause-and-effect, descriptive works, comparison-and-contrast, classification, definition, and persuasive/argumentative papers. Each chapter keeps a solid focus on the type of work presented, so that students can develop the particular skills; the final chapter in this section looks at combining the patterns, to produce more complex and comprehensive research papers and essays.
There is a thematic listing of articles that shows the breadth of topics covered - family relationships, language, education, business and work, sports, race and culture, gender, nature and the environment, media and society, history and politics, and ethics. Among more than one hundred articles are sixteen pieces written by actual students, so that students can see the model produced by people at their same level of development. Writings from famous people such as Thomas Jefferson, Martin Luther King, Jr., Flannery O'Connor and Mark Twain also give breadth and interest to the selections included here.
The writing assignments include journal writing, essays of the types modeled in the chapters, collaborative activities, and even an internet assignment. There is a companion website for students to use, and instructors can take advantage of materials provided by the publisher, such transparencies and additional samples.
The appendix has a ten-step process for writing a research paper (one of the more common types of college writing expected of students). The steps include everything from choosing a topic to documenting sources. Avoiding common pitfalls such as plagiarism (intentional and inadvertent) is also covered.

This book was helpful in explaining basic college themes. I originally purchased the book for a first year college English course, and the material was very relevant and current. Briefly covers all basic aspects of writing and grammar for college writing as well as plenty of examples used in each chapter. Patterns for College Writing: A Rhetorical Reader and Guide

Even for the casual reader
By Kimberly M Wilson
I used this book in a highschool course called Advance Composition. It was excellent, not only as a tutor in how to write essays, but because of it's choice of examples. Essays on everything from workaholics to environmental issues, made for hours of reading pleasure. Also, it drew on works of relevant authors of the time, including Deborah Tannen and even Al Gore. I didn't realize essays could have such value, even for the casual reader.
